The most valuable find was a small bronze container decorated with cloud patterns. IT was probably used to hold water. We also discovered a shell netlist, which we believe belonged to children, as well as some stone tools like a knife for cutting plants. Those sound fascinating, but I imagine the work was an easy. What chAllenges did your team face? The wind was our biggest chAllenge for two weeks. Strong winds, blue heavily. Also, the bronze container was buried very deep, and IT took us three days to remove IT safely. Paint sticking process, but satisfying result, right? Will these items beyond display in a museum? Maybe, but not right away, because we'll give the items a good clean first, then will recheck their age and take detailed records in the lab. So far, we haven't found a safe way to display them yet. More visitors could also mean a higher risk of damage, but we will consider IT once everything is ready. Welcome to daily talk today were joined by kate Smith and archaeologists from germany. Every morning at 5:30 am, a quiet movement unfolds on a Kerala riverbank. Led by one man, Saji Valuvassery, this floating classroom is teaching people to swim — for free. More than a skill, it’s a lifeline, a community spirit, and a powerful reminder that courage can be contagious
On a quiet February morning in 2009, a school picnic to the scenic spot near the Periyar River turned into a disaster. A boat carrying 15 kids and their teacher overturned in the river, leaving no survivors. The disaster shook Saji Valuvassery, a shop owner. Haunted (困扰) by the thought of the young lives lost, he began offering swimming classes in the very river that had taken them, for free. Little did he know that this simple gesture would turn the banks of the Periyar River into a place filled with laughter and community warmth.
Saji began by teaching his own kids to swim, then their friends, and then a few kids from around the neighbourhood. Word spread. More kids came. Then adults. Today, that small effort has become the “Valasseril River Swimming Club”. Over 10,000 people have learned to swim here, and 2,000 children have been trained to swim across 780 metres of the river — all in one go.
The swimming classes have also grown into a space for sharing knowledge and stories, where everyone who learns is encouraged to give back, keeping the spirit of community flowing as constantly as the river itself. “Once anyone passes their advanced swimming level, they are required to do 6 days of free service, to ensure others’ safety,” explains Saji.
The Valasseril River Swimming Club teaches people from November to May. It pauses (暂停) during the monsoon season (季风季节) and reopens in November, when the river is calm and safe again. Every November, when it restarts, volunteers return voluntarily, led by their shared sense of purpose. When asked what keeps people coming back, Saji simply says, “People go to places where they find happiness.”

First-year college students often face serious stress and depression. However, a new study published in the journal Pets offers a possible solution: regular interactions with therapy dogs. Researchers at Washington State University (WSU) investigated how long-term access to therapy dogs over an entire semester affects students' mental health, specifically focusing on unstructured interactions.
While previous studies showed that structured programs help, the researchers wanted to test if giving students complete autonomy was just as beneficial. This unstructured approach mirrors real-life pet ownership more closely. For the study, the team recruited 145 first-year students who had left pets behind at home. Participants were randomly assigned to a seven-session therapy dog program or a waitlisted control group.
The program allowed students to drop into a relaxed, large room at any time. They could pet, sit with, or talk to the dogs as they pleased for up to two hours. The environment was comfortable with secluded seating areas. The study found that students attending these sessions reported significantly lower levels of stress, worry, and depression compared to the control group. They also showed increased self-compassion, which is linked to better emotional regulation.
Importantly, researchers discovered that students who attended multiple sessions benefited the most. This suggests that regular, sustained contact with therapy dogs has a cumulative effect. Students experienced less decline in well-being, a common issue for freshmen. Researchers believe the benefits likely come from a combination of quietly sitting, petting the dog, and engaging with others.
With college student mental health concerns on the rise, universities are looking for ways to support students. The researchers suggest that offering ongoing, unstructured therapy dog access is a promising step. It is a relatively easy and low-cost way to support student well-being. Universities simply need to provide a welcoming space where students can interact with dogs on their own terms without a strict curriculum.
28.What is a major feature of the unstructured program?
A. It mimics real-life pet ownership. B. It has strict time limits.
C. It focuses on stress management skills. D. It targets graduating students only.
29.What did students who attended multiple sessions show?
A. Cumulative benefits. B. A loss of interest.
C. Physical tiredness. D. Higher stress levels.
30.Why might universities consider implementing this program?
A. To replace all mental health services. B. To improve students' academic skills.
C. To support well-being in a simple way. D. To study dog behavior scientifically.
31.What can be inferred from the text about the success factors?
A. A strict curriculum is necessary. B. Social interaction contributes to well-being.
C. Living at home is required. D. Physical exercise is the main goal.

Researchers have discovered a hidden law that governs all life on Earth. It is called the "universal thermal performance curve" (UTPC). This significant pattern describes how various living things respond to temperature changes. The law seems to apply across the entire spectrum of life, from bacteria to plants and animals. Scientists claim that this curve effectively restricts evolution because no species appears able to escape the profound influence of how temperature affects biological performance.
The law connects huge amounts of data that once looked unrelated. It combines thousands of curves showing how efficiently different species function at different temperatures. The study reveals a consistent trend: as temperature rises, biological performance increases gradually until it reaches a peak. This peak is the optimum point where the organism functions best. However, once past this optimum temperature, performance drops sharply. If the weather gets too hot, it can cause serious physical harm or even death. These findings suggest that species may face greater limits than previously thought when adapting to global warming.
Professor Andrew Jackson notes that across thousands of species, the shape of the curve describing performance change is very similar. While different species have very different optimum temperatures, all the curves are actually the same, just stretched or shifted over different thermal ranges. Importantly, the study shows that the optimum temperature and the critical maximum temperature are closely connected. Once temperatures shift above the optimum, the range where life is viable necessarily becomes smaller.
Senior author Dr. Nicholas Payne adds that the pattern holds for all major groups of life, which have diverged greatly over billions of years. Despite the rich diversity of life forms on Earth, the study shows that all organisms remain constrained by this rule. All evolution has managed to do is move this curve around. Life has not found a way to deviate from this specific thermal performance shape, regardless of how long they have evolved.
The next step is to use this model as a strict benchmark. Scientists plan to look for exceptions that might subtly break the pattern. If they can find any such species or systems, they will be excited to ask why and how. This knowledge is of special importance given forecasts that our climate is likely to keep warming in the coming decades.
32.What happens to biological performance after the optimum point?
A. It remains stable for a long time.
B. It drops sharply in a short time.
C. It continues to rise slowly.
D. It causes no harm to the species.
33.What does the author imply about evolution according to the text?
A. It allows species to change the curve's shape.
B. It helps species avoid the impact of heat.
C. It only changes the position of the curve.
D. It breaks the rule of temperature performance.
34.What is a key finding regarding the optimum temperature?
A. It varies greatly among different species.
B. It is not connected to the maximum temperature.
C. It stays the same for all living things.
D. It determines the shape of the performance curve.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A New Discovery about Climate Change
B. The Diversity of Life on Earth
C. Evolution's Ability to Beat the Heat
D. A Universal Law Governing Life's Heat
B 33. C 34. A 35. D
However, once past this optimum temperature, performance drops sharply."(然而,一旦超过这个最佳温度,性能会急剧下降。)
All evolution has managed to do is move this curve around. Life has not found a way to deviate from this specific thermal performance shape..."(进化所做的一切就是移动这条曲线。
While different species have very different optimum temperatures..."(虽然不同物种拥有非常不同的最佳温度……) 故选A。选项B与文中"are closely connected"(紧密相连)相反;选项D与文中"shape... is very similar"(形状非常相似)不符。
D“A Universal Law Governing Life's Heat”(支配生命热量的一条通用规律)最能概括全文主旨。

A little more than three months ago, I began on a journey — one that required neither a backpack nor a plane ticket. Instead, all I needed was a notebook and a pen. 36 Come rain or shine. No excuses. Just words on paper, day after day.
Now, as I’ve crossed the finish line of this self-challenge, I’m here to share the invaluable insights I’ve gained, hopefully inspiring you to give this powerful tool a shot.
I’m a great listener to everyone except myself. Most of us spend our days listening to others, through meetings, phone calls, podcasts, or social media. But in that process, we often drown out (淹没) the most important voice — our own. 37
My mind is an ocean, sometimes calm, often stormy. Through journaling, I was able to see my thought patterns like never before. Some days, my journal entries were as calm as a peaceful ocean. 38 It was a daily exercise in understanding that our minds, much like the ocean, have ups and downs.
The past is not a prison. 39 Regrets weren’t barriers, but guides showing me a better way forward. Journaling became a form of self-forgiveness and a process of releasing the past events.
The future is a canvas (画布). Journaling didn’t just make me a historian of my past; it also made me an architect of my future. I was able to plan, dream, and visualize like never before. My entries were filled with ideas, goals, and hopes. 40 My journal turned out to be a priceless tool for personal growth and development.
A.On others, they resembled waves during a storm.
B.However, they helped to get to know myself.
C.For these, I could revisit, refine, and reimagine as many times as I wanted.
D.I decided to commit to journaling every single day for 90 days.
E.Mistakes were not terrible failures, but stepping stones.
F.My journal served as a platform for my inner self to be heard.
G.Some mistakes were like the stormy waves on the sea.

Once believed to be merely 56 favorite for children, animated films have "grown up" rapidly. They have become the most commercially 57 (success) film genre in China, making 2025 the highest-grossing(票房最高的) year on record for the category. According to industry reports, as of Tuesday, propelled recently by Disney's blockbuster Zootopia 2, the total box office revenue of animated movies in China 58 (reach) 25.06 billion yuan. This impressive figure is nearly 270 percent higher than that 59 2024.
Winning over Chinese moviegoers for various reasons, the sequel Zootopia 2 60 (earn) over 3.8 billion yuan since its premiere. The new character Gary De'Snake, 61 (deliberate) release during the Year of the Snake, helped the film become a huge hit. This number has surpassed its North American earnings significantly, making China the film's most lucrative market worldwide. Currently, however, the biggest contributor to this year's animation box office bonanza is still Ne Zha 2. Ne Zha 2, 62 has earned over 15.4 billion yuan on the Chinese mainland, has accounted for 30 percent of this year's total box office.
Following these two hits is the film Nobody, a spinoff of a popular animated series 63 (produce) by a famous studio. By reflecting the career stress and dreams of ordinary people, the movie has struck a chord with young audiences, earning 1.719 billion yuan. The fourth highest-grossing movie is Boonie Bears: Future Reborn. Centering on a new adventure in a futuristic world, it earned 821 million yuan.
Shen Wei, a concept artist for the Ne Zha franchise(品牌系列), said the rise of Chinese animation is built on the great progress that domestic animators have made in recent years. He pointed out that with advances in both storytelling and animation techniques, Chinese animation has truly diversified and succeeded in drawing a much 64 (wide) audience.
Yuan Yun'er, a film critic, said the infusion of modern values into traditional culture is a key factor behind the success. Both Ne Zha 2 and Nobody draw inspiration from ancient Chinese classics. She explained that it is easy to stir audiences' interest with familiar settings. They feel a fresh connection when these reimagined stories reflect their own modern-day 65 (struggle).

此处考查固定比较结构,“that of 2024”表示“2024年的(票房)”,that指代代前面的the box office revenue,与of连用表示所属关系,故填of。

This time, Mira wasn’t asking the AI to polish her essays. Instead, she typed a question that had been pressing on her heart for weeks: “Why won’t Grandma eat properly?”
It was early January. After finishing her exams, Mira had returned to her hometown to spend some quiet days with her grandmother. The old woman had once been a legend — she’d worked as a tailor (裁缝), made dresses for half the village and saved enough to open her own shop.
Time had taken its toll. Now her eyesight had dimmed, her fingers trembled, but she was still that legendary woman who lived on her own terms. Whenever someone ladled (用勺子舀) soup into her bowl, she would push it away, murmuring, “I don’t need it. Save it for yourselves.” Every meal played out the same way. It broke Mira’s heart.
Actually, the family was doing well. There was plenty of food, plenty of love. So why did eating — a simple, everyday act — seem like a burden to her?
She tried reasoning with her, but the more she talked, the more Grandma resisted. Until one day, in a moment of frustration, she blurted out, “Grandma, you make me so sad when you act like this.” The old woman froze, then sighed. “I’m over seventy. I won’t be around much longer. It doesn’t matter how I eat.”
The words cut deep. Mira thought about taking her to a psychologist (心理医生) but knew she’d refuse. So she turned to an old companion, the AI.
The response came quickly. Grandma was refusing food because she felt like she no longer had a place in the family. The AI offered suggestions: Help her feel secure and needed.

With AI’s assistance, Mira began her plan. First, she worked with AI to create customized recipes for Grandma, accounting for her age-related digestive issues and past preferences to make nutritious, easy-to-swallow dishes. Meanwhile, following AI’s suggestion to make Grandma feel valued, the family started to shower her with more attention — sitting with her at meals, chatting warmly, expressing appreciation and encouraging her to eat. As days passed, Grandma began to sense the genuine care and importance the family placed on her. Gradually, the once-stubborn resistance to food faded away.
As meals became less of a battle, Mira decided to relight the sparkle in grandmother’s eyes. “It’s time to make her feel needed,” Mira thought, appealing to Grandma’s pride as the village’s best tailor and asking her to make a special outfit for a school event. Grandma’s eyes lit up immediately, a spark of the old force she once had returning. Mira and Grandma spent hours crafting together — Grandma patiently guiding her through measuring, cutting, and sewing, sharing stories of her tailor days. This interaction restored Grandma’s self-worth, strengthened their bond, and gave her a new lease on life. Her appetite improved with renewed energy from skill recognition, leaving Mira amazed at AI’s role as an outstanding virtual psychologist.

24.Why did Saji start the swimming classes?
A.To connect with volunteers.
B.To enrich community activities.
C.To profit from teaching swimming.
D.To stop people from dying in water.
25.What does the author want to show with the figures in paragraph 3?
A.The challenge facing Saji’s swimming club.
B.Saji’s wide influence on kids in the community.
C.The popularity of swimming near the Periyar River.
D.Saji’s remarkable achievement in swimming education.
26.What will advanced swimmers need to do after completing their training?
A.Teach swimming skills for free.
B.Serve as a short-term safety guardian.
C.Share their stories with other learners.
D.Volunteer during the monsoon season.
27.Which of the following best describes Saji?
A.Selfless and caring.
B.Courageous but impractical.
C.Curious but impatient.
D.Brave and generous.
