David was a little boy with messy brown hair and old clothes. I had often wondered what kind of home life David had and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so improperly for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David special. He was always happy to help and not a day passed that David didn’t stay after school to straighten chairs and clean the desks. We never talked much, he would just simply smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for letting him stay and slowly head for home.
Weeks passed and the excitement over the coming Christmas grew stronger and stronger until the last day of school before the holiday break. When the final bell rang, the anxious (急切) children rushed out of the door. I smiled in relief as the last of them hurried out the door. Turning around, I saw David quietly standing by my desk.
“I have something for you, Ms Miller.” he said and pulled from behind his back a small box wrapped (包装) in old paper. Handing it to me, he said anxiously, “Please open it.” I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it. To my surprise, I saw nothing. I looked at David’s smiling face and back into the empty box and said, “The box is nice, David, but it’s empty.”
“Oh, no, it isn’t,” said David. “It’s full of love. My mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn’t see or touch unless you know it’s there… can you see it?”
Tears filled my eyes as I looked at the proud dirty face that I had given little attention to. “Yes, David, I can see it.” I replied. “Thank you.” I can say that with the passing years, I never forgot the meaning behind the little empty box that sat on my desk.
19. How was David different from the other children?
A. He was short and had brown hair. B. He was lazy and wore old clothes.
C. He was poorly dressed but always helpful. D. He was hard-working but often played alone.
20. How did the children feel as Christmas was getting closer?
A. Quiet and relaxed. B. Creative and peaceful. C. Excited and anxious. D. Impolite and careless.

A. She was angry because David’s face was dirty.
B. She was annoyed because David’s mother died years ago.
C. She was disappointed because David played a joke on her.
D. She was moved because she got the meaning behind the box.
22. What is the best title of the text?

Brooke wanted a dollhouse and some sugar cookies. So the 6-year-old girl asked Alexa to get them. Alexa wasn’t her mom or sister. It was a voice-activated home assistant (语音助手) powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Alexa quickly made Brooke’s wishes come true. A few days later, much to her parents’ surprise, a $170 dollhouse and four pounds of cookies arrived at their house. (They ate the cookies and donated the dollhouse to a local hospital.) And that’s not the end of the story. When a news reporter told the story of what happened on TV, Alexa devices in many listeners’ homes woke up and tried to order dollhouses!
Alexa isn’t the only AI ready to order up gifts for you. Apple Home Pod has Siri, and Google Home has its Assistant. People who own these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting times. According to a report from The Information, voice shopping is not very common yet. People who do it mainly order simple things like paper towels. But many experts predict a boom (暴涨) in voice shopping in the near future. Is that a good thing?
Convenience is the main advantage of voice shopping. You can shout out an order as soon as you think of it, even if you’re cooking, cleaning, or driving. In addition, people with disabilities who are unable to use a keyboard or mouse can shop without others’ help.
But voice shopping has its downsides. Unwanted dollhouses aren’t the biggest problem. It’s usually very easy to cancel an order or return items. The thing is that they are always there to listen for “Alexa” or “OK Google”. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens to these recordings. Should companies be allowed to use them to learn about people’s shopping habits? And what if someone hacks (侵入) the device?
23. What did Brooke ask Alexa to get for her?
A. A pet dog and paper towels. B. A new bicycle and toy bears.
C. A video game and a keyboard. D. A dollhouse and sugar cookies.
24. What is the correct order of the following activities?
①Her parents got a surprise package.
②A news reporter told the story of Brooke on TV.
③ Brooke asked Alexa for a dollhouse and cookies.
④Alexa devices in other homes tried to order dollhouses.
A. ③-①-④-② B. ③-①-②-④ C. ④-①-③-② D. ④-②-③-①
25. What does the underlined word “downsides” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Weaknesses. B. Processes. C. Chances. D. Secrets.
26. What do some people worry about the most regarding voice-activated assistants?
A. They will buy many unwanted things. B. The recordings would be used improperly.
C. They cannot be used to make phone calls. D. They are not good at understanding orders.

Every year, climate change is making the planet hotter. When humans cut down trees or burn coal, oil, and gas to produce electricity, CO2 and other harmful greenhouse gases (温室气体) go into the atmosphere (大气层). These gases take in the sun’s heat, causing Earth to warm up. The heat causes terrible weather around the world, including heat waves, floods and huge storms.
One way of keeping the planet cool is to stop the greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. Some animals are natural-born climate change fighters. All animals are important, but a few hero animals protect their homes and keep them healthy, while going about their daily lives. Just by being themselves, these clever animals can prevent the planet from getting too hot. Let’s meet them.
Tapirs (貘), rainforest regenerators
Imagine if you pulled a pig’s nose to make it longer but stopped before it got as long as an elephant’s trunk. That’s what a tapir looks like. These strange animals can grow as big as, or even bigger than, an adult lion. Tapirs have a secret superpower, too—their poo (大便). Tapir’s poo spreads seeds (种子) across the forest, helping lots of new plants grow so that the forests can spring back to life more quickly.
Sea otters (海獭), protectors of the kelp (海带) forest
Kelp grows in huge underwater forests. Like forests on land, kelp provides a wonderful, safe home for lots of animals, including sea otters. It also takes in and stores lots of carbon (碳). The sea urchins (海胆) love to eat kelp, and sea otters love to eat the urchins. When an otter uses its stomach like a dinner table to snack on urchins, it’s not only super-cute, it’s actually helping to protect the kelp and create healthy, lively underwater forests.
27. What happens when greenhouse gases go into the atmosphere?
A. They make the sky look darker. B. They send the sun’s heat back into space.
C. They prevent sunlight from reaching Earth. D. They take in the sun’s heat, making Earth warmer.
28. What is the tapir’s secret superpower?
A. Running faster than a lion.
B. Climbing trees very high to pick fruits.
C. Spreading seeds with their poo to help plants grow.
D. Eating a lot of different plants to grow as big as a lion.
29. How does kelp help in the underwater ecosystem?
A. It eats up sea urchins as snacks. B. It keeps the sea water warm and clean.
C. It is a primary food source for sea otters. D. It provides a home for sea otters and stores carbon.
30. What’s the role of tapirs and sea otters in the environment?
A. They are a danger to the environment. B. They have no influence on the environment.
C. They play a big role in protecting the environment. D. They strongly wish to stop the Earth getting warmer.
