An unforgettable campus activity is the recent English Speech Contest. I joined it and practiced hard with my classmates' encouragement. Though I didn't win the first prize, I gained great confidence and improved my spoken English a lot.
Winter vacation is coming soon. Would you like to come to China? I'll show you around my city and share Chinese culture with you. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,

Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mom’s suggestion. Every afternoon, she stood in the neighborhood park, singing softly at first, then gradually raising her voice as passersby paused to listen. Some children mimicked her at first, but she remembered her mother’s words and kept going. One day, an elderly woman clapped and said, “Your voice is like sunshine!” Encouraged, Emily began singing at local gatherings. With each performance, her hands trembled less, and her lyrics flowed more smoothly. Lucy cheered her on, and even the boys who once teased her nodded in quiet respect when she sang a folk song perfectly at the school picnic.
A few weeks later, there was another singing competition in her community. This time, Emily signed up without hesitation. Backstage, she clasped Lucy’s hand, not from fear but excitement. When her name was called, she walked onto the stage, took a deep breath, and began. Her voice, clear and steady, filled the hall. She noticed the same boys in the front row, but now they were tapping their feet to the rhythm. As she hit the final note, the audience erupted in applause. Emily bowed, cheeks flushed with pride. Afterward, her mother hugged her tightly, whispering, “See? Courage is just practice in disguise.”

I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an embarrassed expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of incomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon?
24.What did the author probably meet with?
A.Hearing loss. B.Culture shock. C.A language barrier. D.A teaching problem.
25.What makes the author fall behind in language?
A.Learning needs. B.Teaching tasks.
C.Age difference. D.Language abuse.
26.What does the author think of language change?
A.It is completely avoidable. B.It is really small.
C.It is very beneficial. D.It is much too dramatic.
27.What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Reduces. B.Grows. C.Happens. D.Focuses.

During the winter of 2014, I relocated back to Boston. Having experienced trouble in a neighboring state, I left there quickly and contacted some friends. They invited me to go and stay with them as long as I needed. The shelter (庇护所) they provided was the end of an 18-month suffering.
That winter, we had a bad snowstorm. There were two feet of snow and ice on top of my car. When I started to shovel (铲) it, my snow shovel broke. I would use my ice scraper (刮刀) to clear the snow off the car before returning to my friends’ apartment and borrowing a shovel.
Suddenly, a young man ran out of a neighboring house with a shovel. Smiling, I thanked him and reached for it. He smiled back and said, “I’ll do it for you, ma’ am.” Then he did the heavy shoveling while I cleaned the snow off my car. Together, we got my car out of the snow bank.
He was just happy to help me out, which made my day, especially after my bad experience. I think I had unknowingly given up on people after my heartache. After his random act of kindness, my world was brighter, and I could smile more.
I am doing much better now. I no longer live in Boston, but have a strong bond with it. In some respects, I was reborn there. Because of the difficulties I went through, I don’t think I can live a normal life again. But when I get down or things get hard, I think about what that young man and that group of friends did for me. It reminds me that there are many wonderful and selfless people on this planet. A few minutes of shoveling helped me connect again to the possibility of innocent acts of kindness.
28.How did the author feel before returning to Boston?
A.Surprised. B.Bored. C.Heartbroken. D.Satisfied.
29.What did the young man do to help the author?
A.He gave her a shelter. B.He lent a scraper to her.
C.He started the car for her. D.He shoveled the snow off.
30.What happened to the author after the young man’s help?
A.She suffered heartache. B.She got her hope back.
C.She remembered her past. D.She put kindness into practice.
31.What do the young man and the friends mean to the author?
A.The pain in Boston. B.The source of wealth.
C.Her spiritual support. D.Her former memories.

Millions of Englishmen have stopped saying “thank you” and now say “cheers”. Although the average person will say “thank you” nearly 5.000 times a year, one in three tends to say “cheers” or “ta” instead. They assume “thank you” is not in fashion. One in 20 now says “nice one”, while the younger generation are more likely to use a “cool”. “Merci”, “fab” and even “gracias” were also listed as common expressions of appreciation.
Nick Thorogood, Professional Managing Director of Food Network UK, said: “When it comes to saying ‘thank you’, people will always find the best way to express thanks that fits them best. It’s actually quite interesting to see what ‘thank you’ means to different people. Also, a quarter of us show thanks through delicious food — which shows that taking time and making an effort to say ‘thank you’ still has a positive effect on us.”
However, it seems that sometimes displays of good manners are just surface-level. A huge 70 percent of those questioned admit they will say “thank you” to a person’s face without really meaning it. Half of the people questioned admit it is unnecessary to thank those closest to them, because they assume their family already recognize their thanks.
When spoken words won’t do, it falls to a nice text to do the job for most people, like SMS (short message service). A thank-you e-mail is also popular, while a quarter turn to social media to express thanks. A quarter of Englishmen say “thank you” with food, with 23 percent cooking a meal to show their appreciation to someone. Another 15 percent bake a cake. A third will still send a handwritten thank-you note — but 45 percent admit it’s been more than six months since they bothered to send one.
32.Why do many Englishmen stop using "thank you"?
A.They are afraid of causing panic. B.They think it out of date.
C.They think it unnecessary. D.They don’t think it can impress others.
33.What can we learn from Nick Thorogood’s words?
A.People in Britain don’t say “thank you” anymore now.
B.Most people in Britain say “thank you” only at meal time.
C.Half of Englishmen say “cheers” through food.
D.It’s positive to express thanks to others.
34.Which of the following is the main way people choose to express thanks?
A.Sending handwritten notes. B.Using social media.
C.Sending text messages. D.Cooking a special meal.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The younger generation in the UK prefers to use “cool” to express thanks.
B.It introduces the various ways English people express thanks.
C.The decline of traditional phrases of saying thanks.
D.People like to show thanks through delicious food with a positive effect.

Lifelong learning is the idea that learning keeps going through our daily experiences throughout our lives. It can be quite useful to us. However, to form a habit of life long learning is not easy. We need to train our brain to develop lifelong learning. 36 .
◆ Create an aim for your learning.
That may sound funny. 37 . For example, maybe your aim is to reduce your stress levels or find different ways to relax. Having an aim not only makes the learning beneficial but gives it a purpose.
◆ 38 .
If lifelong learning has not been your “thing”, trying to eat this learning elephant in one bite makes it more difficult to stick with it. 39 . For example, instead of struggling to read 100 pages in a book every day, why not start with 15 minutes, two or three times a week? After you have made that small habit into place, you can then add to it.
◆ Make it fun.
40 , the act of doing it obviously decreases. Have some fun with your learning. For example, for every new learning opportunity you take, give yourself some reward. Give yourself a gold star. Make learning a game. Whatever is going to make learning fun for you, make sure that you experience the fun!
A.Start small
B.Be creative
C.But having an aim in mind truly does help a lot
D.That must be meaningful
E.If learning is a chore or becomes a chore
F.Here are some simple ways to help you
G.Breaking down the learning into bite-sized pieces helps.

There was a girl named Emily. Although her singing was pleasant to hear, lacking (缺乏) of courage, she never sings in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to join in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mom’s advice and decided to have a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed (尴尬的) and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged (拥抱) her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily told her mother what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped (用手捧着) her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I mean, you only work 4 hours a day!” It's true that I do a morning program from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., but it isn't all my work time each day. I get up at 2:00 a.m. then I take a quick shower and sit down at my computer. I collect program information and update our program's website until 4:30 a.m. I arrive at the radio station at 5:00 a.m. and spend the next hour preparing, recording and so on. The program begins at 6:00 a.m. and goes until 10:00 a.m. After that often I can walk out soon, but sometimes there are meetings. Then I go home and answer program e-mails, have lunch and have a short rest. Then at about 4:00 p.m., I begin preparing for my next day. It really lasts two hours. So, the 4-hour-day work timetable is much longer than most people think. Luckily, I really enjoy what I do. It's not only my work, but also my hobby.

B
I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn't an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language.
If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I'd have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn't understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they're talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.
A.Reduces. B.Grows. C.Happens. D.Focuses.
【答案】24.C 25.C 26.D 27.A
根据第一段“But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board. (但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘“语言之船”似乎已经启航,而我却没有上船)”及第二段“I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked.(我不知道Venmo是什么意思,于是就问了)”可知,作者因不懂学生使用的词汇,面临语言沟通上的障碍。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。根据第一段“One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn't an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.(其中一个“问题”是,随着时间的推移,我变老了,但我的学生仍然是18到22岁。早期,当我二三十岁的时候,这不是一个问题,因为我们的年龄足够接近,可以说同样的语言。但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘语言之船似乎已经启航,而我不在船上)”可知,作者年轻时与学生年龄相近无语言问题,如今因年龄差距变大,逐渐跟不上学生的语言。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段“I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I'd have no idea what people were talking about. (我并不反对变化,但当变化的速度快到让我勉力支撑时,我会感到不适。如果我昏睡五年后醒来,我会完全不知道人们在说什么)”可知,作者认为语言变化的速度过快、过于剧烈,让自己难以跟上。故选D项。
27.词句猜测题。根据第四段“Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they're talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.(他们愿意向我解释他们的话是一种极大的安慰,我庆幸自己至少对他们所说的内容感兴趣,以及我在很大程度上理解他们解释的能力)”及最后一段“But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon? (但如果我的兴趣wanes,而那艘“语言之船”最终消失在视野中,会发生什么呢?)”可知,句中的But表转折,此处与前文“有兴趣”形成对比,推测此处表示兴趣减少,划线单词表示“减少”,与Reduces意义相近。故选A项。
C
During the winter of 2014, I relocated back to Boston. Having experienced trouble in a neighboring state, I left there quickly and contacted some friends. They invited me to go and stay with them as long as I needed. The shelter (庇护所) they provided was the end of an 18-month suffering.
That winter, we had a bad snowstorm. There were two feet of snow and ice on top of my car. When I started to shovel (铲) it, my snow shovel broke. I would use my ice scraper (刮刀) to clear the snow off the car before returning to my friends' apartment and borrowing a shovel.
Suddenly, a young man ran out of a neighboring house with a shovel. Smiling, I thanked him and reached for it. He smiled back and said, “I'll do it for you, ma' am.” Then he did the heavy shoveling while I cleaned the snow off my car.
Because of the difficulties I went through, I don't think I can live a normal life again.
30.What happened to the author after the young man's help?
A.She suffered heartache. B.She got her hope back.
C.She remembered her past. D.She put kindness into practice.
31.What do the young man and the friends mean to the author?
A.The pain in Boston. B.The source of wealth.
C.Her spiritual support. D.Her former memories.
根据第一段中的“Having experienced trouble in a neighboring state, I left there quickly (在邻近的州遭遇困境后,我迅速离开了那里)以及第四段中的“I think I had unknowingly given up on people after my heartache. (我想在心痛之后,我不知不觉地对人性失去了信心。)”可知,作者回到波士顿之前内心是心碎的。故选C项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Suddenly, a young man ran out of a neighboring house with a shovel. Smiling, I thanked him and reached for it. He smiled back and said, “I'll do it for you, ma' am.” Then he did the heavy shoveling while I cleaned the snow off my car. (突然,一个年轻人拿着铲子从隔壁房子里跑了出来。我笑着向他道谢,伸手去拿铲子。他也笑了笑说:“女士,我来帮你吧。”然后他用力铲雪,我则清理车上的积雪。)可知,年轻人主动帮作者铲掉了车上的雪。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“After his random act of kindness, my world was brighter, and I could smile more.( 在他不经意的善举之后,我的世界变得更加明亮,我也能笑得更多了。)”以及最后一段中的“It reminds me that there are many wonderful and selfless people on this planet. A few minutes of shoveling helped me connect again to the possibility of innocent acts of kindness. (这提醒我,这个星球上有许多美好而无私的人。几分钟的铲雪让我重新感受到了纯真善举的可能性。)”可知,年轻人的帮助让作者重拾了希望。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“But when I get down or things get hard, I think about what that young man and that group of friends did for me. It reminds me that there are many wonderful and selfless people on this planet. (但当我情绪低落或遇到困难时,我就会想起那个年轻人和那群朋友为我所做的一切。这提醒我,这个星球上有许多美好而无私的人。)”可知,年轻人和朋友们的帮助成为了作者的精神支柱。故选C项。
D
Millions of Englishmen have stopped saying “thank you” and now say “cheers”. Although the average person will say “thank you” nearly 5.000 times a year, one in three tends to say “cheers” or “ta” instead. They assume “thank you” is not in fashion. One in 20 now says “nice one”, while the younger generation are more likely to use a “cool”. “Merci”, “fab” and even “gracias” were also listed as common expressions of appreciation.
Nick Thorogood, Professional Managing Director of Food Network UK, said: “When it comes to saying ‘thank you', people will always find the best way to express thanks that fits them best. It's actually quite interesting to see what ‘thank you' means to different people. Also, a quarter of us show thanks through delicious food — which shows that taking time and making an effort to say ‘thank you' still has a positive effect on us.”
However, it seems that sometimes displays of good manners are just surface-level. A huge 70 percent of those questioned admit they will say “thank you” to a person's face without really meaning it. Half of the people questioned admit it is unnecessary to thank those closest to them, because they assume their family already recognize their thanks.
When spoken words won't do, it falls to a nice text to do the job for most people, like SMS (short message service). A thank-you e-mail is also popular, while a quarter turn to social media to express thanks. A quarter of Englishmen say “thank you” with food, with 23 percent cooking a meal to show their appreciation to someone. Another 15 percent bake a cake. A third will still send a handwritten thank-you note — but 45 percent admit it's been more than six months since they bothered to send one.
32.Why do many Englishmen stop using "thank you"?
A.They are afraid of causing panic. B.They think it out of date.
C.They think it unnecessary. D.They don't think it can impress others.
33.What can we learn from Nick Thorogood's words?
A.People in Britain don't say “thank you” anymore now.
B.Most people in Britain say “thank you” only at meal time.
C.Half of Englishmen say “cheers” through food.
D.It's positive to express thanks to others.
根据第一段中的“They assume “thank you” is not in fashion.(他们认为“thank you”已经不流行了。)”
根据第二段中的“Also, a quarter of us show thanks through delicious food—which shows that taking time and making an effort to say ‘thank you' still has a positive effect on us.”(此外,四分之一的人通过美味的食物来表达感谢——这表明花时间、用心说“谢谢”仍然会对我们产生积极的影响。)”
根据第四段中的“When spoken words won't do, it falls to a nice text to do the job for most people, like SMS (short message service).(当言语无法表达时,大多数人会选择一条温馨的短信来完成这项任务,比如短信服务。)”

We need to train our brain to develop lifelong learning.(终身学习是指学习贯穿于我们的日常生活中。
37.根据上文“That may sound funny.(这听起来有点滑稽)”以及下文“For example, maybe your aim is to reduce your stress levels or find different ways to relax. Having an aim not only makes the learning beneficial but gives it a purpose.(例如,也许你的目标是减少你的压力水平或找到不同的放松方式。有一个目标不仅使学习有益,而且给它一个目的)”可知,本段的建议是为学习创设一个目标,本句与上文构成转折,指出有目标的作用。故C项“但是心中有一个目标确实很有帮助”符合语境。故选C。
38.空处为段落小标题。根据下文“After you have made that small habit into place, you can then add to it.(当你养成了这个小习惯之后,你就可以添加它了)”可知,本段主要讲述要从小事开始坚持终身学习。 故选A。
39.根据下文“For example, instead of struggling to read 100 pages in a book very day, why not start with 15 minutes, two or three time a week? After you have made that small habit into place, you can then add to it.(例如,与其每天努力读100页书,为什么不从每周读两三次,每次15分钟开始呢?当你养成了这个小习惯之后,你就可以添加它了)”可知,空处表达的观点是要把学习分解成小块。故G项“把学习分解成小块会有帮助”符合语境。故选G。
40.根据段落小标题“Make it fun.(使它有趣)”以及后文“ the act of doing it obviously decreases. Have some fun with your learning. For example, for every new learning opportunity you take, give yourself some reward. Give yourself a gold star. Make learning a game. Whatever is going to make learning fun for you, make sure that you experience the fun!(这样做的行为明显减少。

I believe there will be a harvest (收获) for you.”
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mom’s suggestion.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few weeks later, there was another singing competition in her community.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:

After you have made that small habit into place, you can then add to it.
◆ Make it fun.
40 , the act of doing it obviously decreases. Have some fun with your learning. For example, for every new learning opportunity you take, give yourself some reward. Give yourself a gold star.
I believe there will be a harvest (收获) for you.”
