Lexie Alford, 21, said she recently became the youngest person to visit every country. Though her success hasn’t been shown to be true by the Guinness Book of World Records, Alford said she had been to 196 countries. While her trips may have looked attractive and exciting on her social media, Alford faced various difficulties such as getting lost in new places, running short of money, and falling sick with malaria (疟疾) or food poisoning.
For most people, the biggest problem for seeing the world is not having enough money, but Alford managed to pay for her travels mostly by herself. She started doing many jobs and savings all the money she earned since she was 12 years old. Also, her mother owns a travel agency and it helps her find the best prices and book in advance, which helps her save a lot of money on flights and hotels.
As a solo female traveler, Alford thought being safe was the most important thing when deciding how long to stay in a country, besides money and her own interest. She spent over a month in countries like Egypt and Switzerland, where there were many things she could do and ways to keep those trips from being too expensive. Then there are some countries like Mali, South Sudan, and Somalia which she would have loved to spend more than a few days visiting, but unfortunately she couldn’t afford the proper steps to travel safely there. Despite feeling lonely at times, Alford thinks that solo travel is a great experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives.
After her travels, Alford now believes that every problem has a solution if you work hard enough. You also have to give up a lot of things if you want to travel the world, but if it’s something you really love, you just need courage to go for it.
41. What do we know about Alford’s travel to 196 countries?
A. It was easy and fun all the time.
B. She faced some hard situations.
C. She visited all countries with her mother.
D. She had no health problems at all.
42. How did Alford get money for her travels?
A. She mainly used her own money from work and saving.
B. Her mother gave her all the money.
C. She got free flights and hotels.
D. She borrowed money from friends.
43. Why did Alford stay in Mali for only a few days?
A. She didn’t like the things to do in those countries.
B. She didn’t have enough money for safe travel there.
C. She felt so lonely that she didn’t want to stay any longer.
D. She couldn’t talk with people there.
44. What does the word “solo” in Para. 3 mean?
A. With family. B. With friends. C. By oneself. D. In a group.
45. What does Alford want to tell us after traveling?
A. Traveling needs love and courage.
B. Traveling is impossible for most people.
C. We should never give up things for travel.
D. Problems in travel can’t be solved.

Have you ever noticed this? When you line up at the supermarket checkout counter, the other lines always seem to move faster than yours. You might check your phone again and again, and even wish you’d picked a different line. Now, a report from The New York Times looks into the math and psychology (心理学) behind it. It also gives simple tips on how to pick the fastest line — whether you’re in a supermarket, a bank waiting to take out money, or a coffee shop waiting for your drink.
Dan Meyer, a US mathematician, says a cart full of things doesn’t tell you everything. “Every person needs some time to say hello and goodbye to the cashier.” he explains. That fixed time is about 41 seconds per person. Each small thing in the basket, like a cola can or breakfast box. Let’s see an example. If there are five people in front of you, each with 10 things, you’ll wait 355 seconds (that’s almost 6 minutes!). But if there’s just one person ahead with 50 things, you’ll only wait 191 seconds (about 3 minutes). It’s surprising, but the numbers don’t lie!
It’s also important to watch the people in line. For example, elderly people usually move more slowly — they might take time to put their wallet back or carry their bags. The things in their carts matter too: four bottles of the same milk check out faster than four different items (like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of eggs, and a jar of jam), because the cashier can scan the same item quickly. What’s more, US science writer Robert Samuel says about 90 percent of people are right-handed, so they naturally turn to the right when choosing a line. Going left instead gives you a better shot at a faster line. Try these tips next time you’re waiting in line, and you might save time to do something more fun!
46. What does the report look into according to Paragraph 1?
A. Why phones are useful in lines.
B. The math and psychology behind slow lines.
C. How cashiers can work faster.
D. Differences between store and bank lines.
47. How long will you wait if there is one person ahead with 10 things?
A. 71 seconds. B. 101 seconds. C. 131 seconds. D. 161 seconds.
48. Which of the following lines may move fastest?
A. One elderly person buying 10 different things.
B. One young person buying 10 different things.
C. One elderly person buying 10 same things.
D. One young person buying 10 same things.
49. What advice does Robert Samuel give for choosing a faster line?
A. Studying the customers.
B Choosing the left line.
C. Picking someone with a full cart.
D. Studying the goods customers bought.
50. What does the story mainly talk about?
A. How to communicate with cashiers effectively.
B. The psychology of customers in the supermarket.
C. The best time to go shopping at the supermarket.
D. Tips on choosing the fastest line when waiting in line.
D
There is a sport that isn’t played on a field or in a park. Instead, its matches are played between players in front of computers. Professional video game playing, or “pro gaming”, is the hottest new sport. Its best players are big stars that can win huge prizes and lots of money for playing their favourite games.
Sounds like a dream? The truth isn’t so wonderful. For professional gamers, playing is a full-time job. They usually practise 50 hours a week with their team. Besides, they’ll spend lots of time practising alone. They may practise up to 15hours a day during the gaming season. That only leaves time for meals, short breaks and a little sleep.
Even though pro gamers spend most of their time sitting, they still need exercise to avoid physical injuries (身体的损伤) . They have to exercise between matches to avoid injuries to their wrists (手腕) , arms or shoulders. They also need to take breaks from looking at screens to avoid eye problems. Also, it’s important for them to get enough sleep, which helps them do well in the game.
Most pro gamers are young. However, they often retire from the sport in their 20s — around the same time other people finish college.
Professional video game playing might sound like a dream job at first. But it isn’t as fun as many people imagine. Becoming a pro gamer takes hard work and perseverance (毅力) . In fact, they will help you find success no matter what career path you choose.
51. How is pro gaming first introduced in the first paragraph?
A. As a difficult and short-lived career. B. As a popular and exciting sport.
C. As an unhealthy activity. D. As an outdated hobby.
52. What is a pro gamer’s main daily focus?
A. Studying game rules. B. Physical exercise.
C. Long hours of training. D. Meeting fans.
53. What do we know about pro gamers from Paragraph 3?
A. They hardly get enough sleep. B. They face risks of physical injuries.
C. They are good at physical sports. D. They will go to college after retirement.
54. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to _________.
A. dream jobs B. video games
C. enough exercise and sleep D. hard work and perseverance
55 What does the author think about pro gaming?
A. It’s a perfect dream job. B. It’s better than college.
C. It takes a lot of efforts. D. It has little value.

My name’s Martin Cabello and I'm a young photographer. Taking photos was always my favourite activity as a child. And when I was 15, I felt that if I wanted to take my hobby to the next level, I had to do something special. So I decided to start a personal project: I would take one photo every day for a whole year of my life. I knew that many other young photographers before me had done the same thing, but it seemed like a really great idea, and so I started.
After several weeks, I decided to put these photos onto a website for young photographers. I was amazed to discover that there were others who liked the way I saw and photographed things. Then someone suggested that if my photos all had a subject or idea to connect them, my project would be even better—and I agreed. So I began to take photos of nature, especially of birds and the sky. A lot of them were black and white photos, which was very different from what many other young photographers were doing they were all taking colour photos. As a result, I sometimes had doubts about my project, and I almost gave up several times. In the end, however, I trusted my own feelings, and became more confident about my photographic style and choices.
One day I showed my project to my art teacher at school. She told me about a national photography competition for people my age. So I entered some of my photos, just for fun. I’ll never forget the minute when the judges told me that I had won first prize. I was over the moon. It was the first time I realised that maybe my photography skills were really good, and that I might actually be able to make a living doing photography in the future. I now work for a big nature magazine and take photos around the world. I’ve never regretted my career choice.

B. Choosing the left line.
【答案】46. B 47. A 48. D 49. B 50. D

【47题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第二段中“That fixed time is about 41 seconds per person. Each small thing in the basket, like a cola can or breakfast box. Let’s see an example. If there are five people in front of you, each with 10 things, you’ll wait 355 seconds (that’s almost 6 minutes!). But if there’s just one person ahead with 50 things, you’ll only wait 191 seconds (about 3 minutes).(每个人所需的这段固定时间大约为41秒。 故选A。

The things in their carts matter too: four bottles of the same milk check out faster than four different items (like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of eggs, and a jar of jam), because the cashier can scan the same item quickly.(例如,老年人通常行动更为迟缓——他们可能需要花些时间把钱包放回包里,或是提着购物袋。

C. They are good at physical sports. D. They will go to college after retirement.
54. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to _________.
A. dream jobs B. video games
C. enough exercise and sleep D. hard work and perseverance
55. What does the author think about pro gaming?

第Ⅱ卷
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读表达

Thank you!
【答案】Good morning, everyone!
I’m Li Jin from Class 1, Grade 10. Once, I used a social media app to keep in touch with a childhood friend who had moved abroad. Through regular chats and video calls, we maintained our close bond despite the distance, which showed me the power of digital tools in preserving friendships.
However, online friendships also have their downsides. While we can easily connect with people worldwide, some may misrepresent themselves, leading to potential risks. Therefore, it’s crucial to be cautious and verify information before forming deep connections.
In my view, true friendship is built on trust, mutual support, and shared experiences, whether online or offline. Let’s cherish genuine connections and use technology wisely to enrich our lives.
Thank you!
