He asked me to feed the birds for him and said that he would leave the key to his front door in my mailbox. Unfortunately, I forgot all about the birds until the night before David was going to return. What was worse, it was already dark when I arrived at his house. I soon found that the key David gave me couldn’t unlock the door. I was getting hopeless. When I was just going to give up, I noticed that one bedroom window was slightly open. I found a barrel, pushed it under the window, and managed to climb up and open the window. I had one leg inside the bedroom, but I suddenly found someone shining a torch up at me. I looked down and saw a policeman and an old lady, one of David’s neighbors. “What are you doing there?” asked the policeman. Feeling like a complete fool, I replied, “I’m just going to feed David’s birds.”

I didn’t go to Santiago, Chile to look for friendship. In fact, Chile was not even on my wish list.
A mid-life crisis woman, I got a chance to study abroad. I only wanted to learn about global business, taste South American cuisine, and check “study abroad” off my wish list.
On the fifth day, I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty (扶贫) organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center. Upon arrival, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like a scene out of a horrible film. That moment redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions. As advised, I showed no signs of the motional battle going on inside me.
Just as I was about to start work on painting, a request came through for a few volunteers to help Nadia, a local resident who volunteered to cook for us. I raised my hand to help because I wanted spend time with the people of the neighborhood despite my shortage of Spanish speaking skills.
Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly. Even without speaking each other’s language we started to learn about one another. We chatted about our children, our upbringing, shared picture of our family, struggled to instruct each other to communicate in the other’s language, and laugh many times.
After we fed everybody and the dishes were washed, my day was over. But I found myself hesitant to leave. It was as if I had known her my entire life. I had not predicted the unselfishness heart I would encounter, and it was moving.
As we were waiting for the car to pick us up, Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintains. I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life. She made me long to be stronger person. She showed me that poverty was external, but happiness was internal. I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause, but I left receiving 200 percent from her.
24. What was the author’s initial purpose of going to Chile?
A. To find new friends while traveling. B. To participate in an anti-poverty project.
C. To fulfill the desire to study abroad. D. To gain a graduate certificate in business.
25. What did the author do after seeing the living conditions in the neighborhood?
A. She decided to relieve the poverty. B. She kept her emotions well hidden.
C. She comforted the shocked volunteers. D. She refused to continue the present task.

A. She felt very sympathetic toward Nadia.
B. She longed to interact with the local residents.
C. She wanted to improve her Spanish speaking skills.

27. What did the author learn from Nadia?
A. True friends are never apart in heart.

C. Language is not a barrier to great connections.
D. Unselfishness is putting others before ourselves.

Urban agriculture, the practice of farming within the restrictions of a city, is becoming increasingly popular and is viewed as a sustainable alternative to big industrial farms. By some estimates, between 20% and 30% of the global urban population engages in some form of urban agriculture. But until recently, its carbon footprint remains understudied.
Using data from 73 low-tech city farms, community gardens and personal plots of land, Newell and his team compared the average carbon emissions of food produced at low-tech urban agriculture sites to those of conventionally grown crops. The team found that because of urban gardens’ relatively low yields, along with the energy used in constructing the planting beds, big-city spuds (马铃薯) were significantly more carbon-intensive than commercially grown ones. This held true even when the researchers factored in emissions from transporting commercially grown produce to often distant grocery stores. That doesn’t mean that growing vegetables in big cities is totally bad, however. “Urban farming is great, ” if imperfect, says Carola Grebitus, a food choice expert. It can be a powerful tool for job creation and education, she says, and a good way to introduce fresh produce to urban “food deserts” where healthy fruits and vegetables are hard to come by. Community gardens can also provide a place to connect with nature, and the added green space can reduce the risks of heat and flooding.
Conscious of these benefits, Newell’s team highlighted several ways to make urban agriculture more sustainable. One option is to be selective about what crops are grown. For instance, tomatoes grown in the soil of open-air urban plots had a lower carbon intensity than tomatoes grown in conventional greenhouses. Another strategy is to rely on existing constructions. Include old structures into a new garden’s design instead of taking down old buildings. Finally, take the local climate, water quality and soil into account. Growing plants that are ill-suited to an area requires more water, energy and pesticides (杀虫剂), all of which affect the environment.
28. What can we know about urban agriculture from paragraph 1?
A. It is thoroughly researched. B. It is welcomed by city people.
C. It is environmentally friendly. D. It is limited to industrial farms.
29. How does the author explain the reason for urban agriculture’s higher carbon intensity?
A. By making a comparison. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving a definition. D. By using a quote.
30. According to Carola, what is a benefit of urban agriculture?
A. It adds variety to urban people’s diet. B. It provides recreational opportunities.
C. It strengthens the bonds of community. D. It helps to contain drought and flooding.
31. What is recommended to make urban agriculture more sustainable?
A. Reconstructing gardens. B. Developing greenhouse crops.
C. Selecting pesticide-free vegetables. D. Growing plants suited to local conditions.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. A 31. D

Scientists have long wondered why humans scalps (头皮) are covered in hair even though we are far less hairy elsewhere. A new study suggests hair coming out of our heads may have developed to stop early humans’ brains from overheating.
“The brain is a large and very heat-sensitive organ that also generates a lot of heat,” says lead author Tina Lasisi. “So we figured that could be extremely important for early humans living in Africa under the hot sun.”
To better understand how hair can affect the temperature of the head, Lasisi and her colleagues placed three different wigs (假发) or no wig on a research manikin (人体模型). The manikin was heated to a body temperature of 35℃ and placed under hot lights. The scientists measured the temperature on the manikin’s head when covered with no wig and wigs that have straight hairs, loose curls or tight coils (卷) which are similar in thickness and color.
Under the lights heating at 30℃, the biggest difference in heat was between no hair and hair. The manikin head always became hotter, but adding the straight-haired wig reduced that heat gain by more than half compared to a head with no wig. The curled wig made the scalp area less hot than the straight-haired wig, and the tightly-coiled wig led to the coolest head.
Another experiment also done by Lasisi’s team aimed to simulate (模拟) sweat on the head by wetting the manikin. In this case, bald head cooled the most through evaporation of water. But cooling with sweat might not be that helpful overall, said Lasisi. Having hair lowered the amount of sweat required to balance the sun’s heat.
The study is a great leap forward about thinking why we have so much hair on our heads. But Lasisi acknowledges that the manikin doesn’t match human physiology perfectly and hopes that more research will be done to understand when and why different hair types evolved.
32. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The power of evolution. B. Generating a large amount of heat.
C. The size of the human brain. D. Protecting the head from overheating.
33. Why were hot lights used in the study?
A. To act as the hot sun. B. To test the wigs’ quality.
C. To protect the manikins. D. To create a cozy environment.
34. What can we learn from the study?
A. Man-made hair is mainly used for its decorative value.
B. Different hairstyles affect head temperature differently.
C. It is certain that hair is essential for protecting the head.
D. Hair can increase the need for sweating to cool the head.
35. What could be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Human Brain Is Sensitive to Heat B. Different Wigs Have Different Charms
C. Hair Helps Cool Down Our Heads D. Human Hair Will Be Replaced by Wigs
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. B 35. C

26. Why did the author volunteer to work with Nadia?
A. She felt very sympathetic toward Nadia.
B. She longed to interact with the local residents.
C. She wanted to improve her Spanish speaking skills.
D. She preferred cooking to painting the community center.
27. What did the author learn from Nadia?

D Hair can increase the need for sweating to cool the head.
35. What could be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Human Brain Is Sensitive to Heat B. Different Wigs Have Different Charms
C. Hair Helps Cool Down Our Heads D. Human Hair Will Be Replaced by Wigs
