John Hopfield from Princeton University in the US and Geoffrey Hinton from the University of Toronto, two early AI developers, won this year’s Nobel Prizes in Physics. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave them the award because they helped create methods that are the base for today’s powerful machine learning.
Hinton, who is 76, is called the Goldfather of AI for his work in machine learning. Asked about the potential significance of the technology his research has helped to develop, he said AI will have a “huge influence” on our society. But we also have to worry about a number of possible bad consequences, particularly the threat to humans. He warned. The Nobel committee also mentioned the fears and said humans should use AI safely and make it morally acceptable.
Hopfield, now 91, developed the “Hopfield network”, an artificial neural network that can find and store patterns in information in a way that mimics (模仿) the brain in the 1980s. After Hopfield published his book, Hinton expanded it using ideas from statistical physics and developed the earliest form of machine learning, called the “Boltzmann machine”. Thanks to their work from the 1980s, AI has become part of our daily lives, from facial recognition to language translation” said Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for physics.
Hinton had an unconventional background as a psychologist (心理学家) and was really curious about how the mind works, said Nick Frosst, who was Hinton’s first hire at Google’s AI division in Toronto. “His interest in answering basic questions I think is crucial to his success as a scientist,” Frosst said. “He’s been always trying out crazy things and some of them work very well and some of them don’t,” Frosst said.
“For a long time, people thought what my team and I were doing was meaningless,” Hinton said in an interview. “My message to young researchers is, don’t be put off if everyone tells you what you are doing is silly.”
4. Why did John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton win the Nobel Prize in Physics?
A. They designed the great advanced AI robot.
B. They made a breakthrough in basic physics.
C. They laid a foundation for machine learning.
D. They were the pioneers to develop computers.
5. What should be a major concern for AI according to the Nobel committee?
A. To make strict rules to fight AI.
B. To work out technical difficulties.
C. To popularize the knowledge of AI.
D. To develop safe and responsible AI.
6. What led to Hinton’s success according to Nick Frosst?
A. His performance in other research fields.
B. His strong interest in how the mind works.
C. His constant pursuit of unconventional views.
D. His desire to explore the nature of problems.
7. What is Hinton’s suggestion for young researchers?
A. Hold firm to your principles.
B. Face pressure with courage.
C. Innovate to ensure success.
D. Adjust to the environment.

Stressed at work and feeling your blood pressure rise? People all over the world are told by their doctors to try for a low-sodium (钠) diet to treat high blood pressure or other diseases, but there’s no denying that salt makes food taste good. Fortunately, Japanese researchers at Tokyo’s Meiji University and the manufacturer Kirin have developed high-tech chopsticks that enhance salty tastes, potentially helping those who need to reduce sodium in their diets.
These wired-up chopsticks are actually part of a device that the researchers say can enhance the salty flavor of low-sodium foods. And when they were tested on participants for the first time, results showed that the high-tech chopsticks increase perceived (察觉到) saltiness in foods by about 1.5 times.
According to the research team, the basic principle is that the extra salty flavor is perceived due to extremely weak electric currents conveyed directly into the mouth through the tip of one of the chopsticks. Scientists have apparently been using this kind of weak electricity to play with flavors in the lab for years, but these chopsticks in particular are set to adjust the activity of ions (离子) in sodium chloride (table salt), which enhances salty flavor.
And do these chopsticks work as expected? To verify the effect of the new chopsticks, the researchers conducted an experiment on a total of 36 participants aged 40 to 65, all of whom were eating a low-sodium diet. If nothing else, one thing was clear: participants using the chopsticks tasted more salt than they did without. Results show that they even thought that low-sodium food eaten with the high-tech chopsticks tasted saltier than regular food made with an average amount of sodium, and eaten with normal chopsticks.
The chopsticks aren’t on store shelves quite yet, but with promising results, people around the world who are unhappily devoted to a low-sodium diet might just be excited for any updates to come!
8. What is the main function of the future high-tech chopsticks?
A. To treat blood pressure. B. To test how salty a dish is.
C. To increase the saltiness of food. D. To help reduce salt intake.
9. How do the high-tech chopsticks work?
A. By sending warning information to the brain.
B. By changing the saltiness of food with electric shocks.
C. By using electricity to transport ions between chopsticks.
D. By tricking our brains into tasting extra salt.
10. What does the underlined word “verify” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Confirm. B. Improve.
C. Change. D. Strengthen.
11. What is the writer’s attitude toward the future of the chopsticks?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Uncertain. D. Pessimistic.
D
When tragedy strikes, some people fall into deep depression, sometimes losing hope and even the will to carry on. They may worry continuously about the event and suffer nightmares. Other people, however, react differently. Instead of becoming depressed and unable to cope, they are able to deal with painful experiences and move on.
Boris Cyrulnik is interested in this difference of reaction. To find out why some people are so deeply affected, while others are seemingly able to recover, he has devoted his career to the study of psychological resilience (复原力).
Cyrulnik found resilience is a quality that builds through a natural process. He says that alone, a child has no resilience. We build resilience from developing relationships.
Positive emotions and humour are key factors in resilience. Cyrulnik’s research has shown that people who are better able to deal with life’s difficulties or traumas (创伤) are able to find meaning in hardship, seeing it as a useful and inspiring experience, and even to find ways to laugh. Resilient people always remain able to see how things may turn out for the better in the future, even if the present is painful.
It had previously been thought that people who show more resilience are less emotional in general, but Cyrulnik believed that the pain is no less for resilient people than it is for others; it is a matter of how they choose to use it. The pain may continue, even over a whole lifetime, but for these people it raises a challenge that they decide to meet. The challenge is to overcome what has happened, to find strength in the experience instead of letting it defeat them, and to use the strength to move forward. Given the right support, children are especially able to completely recover from trauma. Cyrulnik has shown that the human brain is easily influenced and will recover if allowed. If a child is well supported and loved after the trauma, his brain is able to return to normal within a year.
Cyrulnik thinks it important not to label children who have suffered a trauma, as such labelling may lead them to a hopeless future. Trauma consists of two things: the injury and the repeated description of that injury. Often the most damaging post-traumatic experience for children is hearing embarrassing adult descriptions of events. Labels, he says, can be more damaging than the experience.
12. Why does the author mention the two different reactions in the first paragraph?
A. To show the value of psychological resilience.
B. To highlight the unpredictable nature of human emotions.
C. To point out the main challenge in trauma treatment.
D. To present a phenomenon that leads to Cyrulnik’s investigation.
13. Which of the following statements about resilience might Cyrulnik agree with?
A. It helps to reduce the present suffering.
B. It is built through social connections.
C. It requires people to forget past hardships.
D. It means having fewer emotional responses.
14. Why does Cyrulnik warn against labeling children who have suffered trauma?
A. It can lead to greater harm than the original trauma.
B. It may slow down their brain’s physical development.
C. It ignores children’s natural ability to recover quickly.
D. It makes them resistant to future psychological treatments.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Boris Cyrulnik: A Life Devoted to Psychology.
B Childhood Trauma: Understanding the Lasting Injury.
C. The Power of Resilience: Overcoming Life’s Challenges.
D. The Human Brain: Its Capacity for Recovery from Trauma.

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!” (嘟囔),“I can not walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK. I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path.
“I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

D 9. D 10. A 11. B

D It means having fewer emotional responses.
B. Childhood Trauma: Understanding the Lasting Injury.
C. The Power of Resilience: Overcoming Life’s Challenges.
D. The Human Brain: Its Capacity for Recovery from Trauma.

故填has been studying/has studied。
故填was exposed。
故填To gain。
故填in。
故填where。
故填a。

I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes.

Paragraph 2:
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone,” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with indescribably wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight.“Anyone still wants her phone?” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let's hike around the lake today.” “Sure, get our backpack then,” I beamed, relieved and joyful.
