For a number of people, visiting the dentist for regular check-ups is totally common. However, for countless individuals across the globe — particularly those living in impoverished (贫困的) areas — getting dental care and having their teeth examined simply isn’t possible. Felipe Rossi, a dentist from Brazil, has devoted himself to helping turn this situation around.
Growing up in the USA Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home — Balsabo in Brazil — changed his initial plan. “All locals didn’t have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them had misshapen teeth or even lost some teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open.” Felipe Rossi recalled. “A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning, fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team consists of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity’ program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is “struggling to survive” because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. “Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face”. Felipe said with a strong will.
4. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?

A. His parents’ encouragement. B. His enthusiasm for dentistry.
C. His academic training in the USA. D. His experience in Brazil.
6. What do we know about Porsorriso?
A. It gives free oral treatments to anyone in need.
B. It is cooperated by Felipe Rossi and the local authority.
C. It is financially supported by corporations and individuals.
D. It holds regular fundraising to educate people about dental care.
7. Which of the following can best describe Felipe Rossi?
A. ambitious and faithful. B. creative and intelligent.
C. energetic and strong-willed. D. determined and kind-hearted.

A study published on Monday in The Annals of Internal Medicine led researchers to conclude that drinking a cup of coffee in the morning could be linked to a lower risk of death. Those who consumed 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee. Those who preferred unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 percent less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with non-coffee drinkers.
The U. K. Biobank, a large-scale medical database with health data from people all over Britain, provided the researchers with data on coffee consumption. The team then analyzed this data, as well as demographic data, lifestyle details, and dietary patterns collected from more than 170,000 participants aged 37 to 73 over a median follow-up period of seven years. The researchers found the risk of dying remained lower for people who drank both decaffeinated (不含咖啡因的) and caffeinated coffee.
“It’s huge. There are very few things that reduce your risk of dying by 30 percent,” said Dr. Cristina Wee, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
There are, however, major caveats to interpreting this research, she added. This is an observational study, which means the data cannot conclusively prove that coffee itself lowers the risk of dying; there may be other lifestyle factors contributing to that lower risk of dying among people who drink coffee, like a healthy diet or a consistent exercise routine.
Despite the encouraging evidence about coffee, there isn’t enough data to suggest that people who don’t currently drink coffee should add a stop to Starbucks during their morning routines, Dr. Wee said. And even keen coffee drinkers shouldn’t use the study to justify endless cups of coffee. The study showed that the benefits of coffee reduced for people who drank more than 4.5 cups of coffee each day. Past studies have shown that consuming “extreme amounts” — over seven cups per day — can lead to adverse effects, she said.
8. Which of the following is a finding of the study?
A. Decaffeinated coffee doesn’t help reduce death risk.
B. Having moderate coffee intake may cut the death risk.
C. Adding sugar to coffee may take away its good effects.
D. Non-coffee drinkers tend to live longer than coffee lovers.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. What amount of coffee brought the greatest benefit.
B. How the study on coffee and death risk was conducted.
C. How different coffee types influenced human health.
D. Which age groups gained the most from coffee drinking.
10. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “caveats” in paragraph 4?
A. Applications. B. Expansions. C. Foundations. D. Limitations.
11. What is Dr. Wee’s attitude towards coffee consumption?
A. Cautious. B. Negative. C. Critical. D. Approving.
B 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“Those who consumed 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee. Those who preferred unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 percent less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with non-coffee drinkers.(那些每天饮用1.5至3.5杯咖啡(即便加了一茶匙糖)的人,在研究期间的死亡率比不喝咖啡的人低30%。那些偏好不加糖咖啡的人,在研究期间的死亡率也低16%至21%。与不喝咖啡的人相比,每天饮用约三杯咖啡的人死亡风险最低)”可知,该研究得出的结论是适量饮用咖啡可能降低死亡风险。故选B。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“The U.K. The researchers found the risk of dying remained lower for people who drank both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee.(英国生物银行是一个存有全英国人口健康数据的大型医疗数据库,它为研究人员提供了咖啡摄入量相关数据。随后,研究团队分析了这些数据,以及在七年中位随访期内,从17万余名37至73岁的参与者中收集到的人口统计数据、生活方式详情和饮食模式。研究人员发现,饮用含咖啡因咖啡和不含咖啡因咖啡的人群,死亡风险均相对更低)”可知,第二段主要讲了关于咖啡与死亡风险的研究是如何开展的。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“This is an observational study, which means the data cannot conclusively prove that coffee itself lowers the risk of dying; there may be other lifestyle factors contributing to that lower risk of dying among people who drink coffee, like a healthy diet or a consistent exercise routine.(这是一项观察性研究,这意味着这些数据无法确切证明咖啡本身能够降低死亡风险;可能还有其他生活方式因素(比如健康的饮食或规律的锻炼习惯)与喝咖啡的人群较低的死亡风险之间存在关联)”可知,该研究存在一些限制,不能确凿地证明咖啡本身能降低死亡风险,故划线词意思是“限制”。
根据最后一段“Despite the encouraging evidence about coffee, there isn’t enough data to suggest that people who don’t currently drink coffee should add a stop to Starbucks during their morning routines, Dr. Wee said. And even keen coffee drinkers shouldn’t use the study to justify endless cups of coffee. The study showed that the benefits of coffee reduced for people who drank more than 4.5 cups of coffee each day. Past studies have shown that consuming “extreme amounts” — over seven cups per day — can lead to adverse effects, she said.(Wee博士表示,尽管有关咖啡的证据令人鼓舞,但目前尚无足够的数据表明那些目前不喝咖啡的人应该在日常早晨活动中取消去星巴克的行程。而且即便是热衷于喝咖啡的人也不应该将这项研究结果用作无限制饮用咖啡的正当理由。该研究显示,每天饮用超过4.5杯咖啡的人,咖啡带来的益处会减少。她还表示,以往的研究表明,摄入“过量”——每天超过7杯——可能会导致不良影响)”可知,Wee博士对饮用咖啡持谨慎态度。故选A。
D
In 2024, Nobel committees acknowledged the revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence (AI) through two of their awards — honoring pioneers of neural (神经系统的) networks with the physics prize, and recognizing the developers of computational tools to study and design proteins in the chemistry prize. But not all researchers are happy.
Several physicists argued that the science underlying machine learning was not actually physics. “I like machine learning and artificial neural networks as much as other people, yet it’s hard to consider this a physics-related discovery.” Jonathan Pritchard, an astrophysicist at Imperial College London.
Not everyone was troubled, however. “Hopfield and Hinton’s research brought together physics, math, computer science and neuroscience,” said Matt Strassler, a theoretical physicist at Harvard University, “In that sense, it belongs to all of these fields.” Anil Ananthaswamy, a science writer based in Berkeley, pointed out that although the research cited by the Nobel committee might not be theoretical physics in the purest sense, it is rooted in techniques and concepts from physics, such as energy. But Anil also added, the connection with physics became more delicate in upcoming developments in machine learning, particularly in techniques that made neural networks easier to train.
Computer science seemed to be completing its Nobel takeover the day after the physics prize announcement, when Demis Hassabis and John Jumper won half of the chemistry Nobel. The prize was a recognition of the innovative force of AI as well as the steady gathering of knowledge in structural and computational biology. “It wasn’t just that we went to work, pressed the AI button, and then all went home,” Jumper said. “It was really an iterative (迭代的) process where we developed, we did research, we tried to find the right kind of combinations between what the community understood about proteins and how we build those insights into our architecture.”
Since they were first awarded in 1901, the Nobels have often highlighted the impact of research on society, and have rewarded practical inventions, not only pure science. In this respect, this year’s prizes are no exception.
12. How did Jonathan Pritchard react to this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics?
A. He praised the organizers. B. He doubted the discovery.
C. He congratulated the winners. D. He questioned the classification.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The role of physics in machine learning is becoming stronger.
B. The Nobel committee focused only on theoretical physics this year.
C. Hopfield and Hinton’s work bridges several scientific disciplines.
D. The future developments in machine learning will completely remove physics.
14. What did Jumper owe their achievement to?
A. The AI-powered iterative research. B. The innovative research in architecture.
C. The community-driven research process. D. The use of AI research for quick answers.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Who won this year’s Nobels using AI?
B. How do this year’s Nobels reflect AI’s role?
C. Why are scientists against this year’s Nobels?
D. What’s the outcome of this year’s Nobels debate?
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to climb the career ladder (梯子) effortlessly, while others struggle to get their foot on the first step? ____16____ Often, it’s about the Matthew Effect: the idea that initial success can create a snowball effect, making future success easier to achieve. Understanding how it works can help you make use of it to your advantage.
____17____ Think of yourself as a young designer who lands an important customer early on. That one project, if handled well, opens the door to bigger opportunities and a growing collection of impressive work. ____18____ When your manager sees you do well in the first place, they’re more likely to trust you with bigger responsibilities.
Being noticed is crucial to the Matthew Effect. ____19____ If you are an employee who consistently delivers outstanding work but doesn’t share that, you may be overshadowed by a coworker who’s just as competent but better at self-promotion. Consider the example of a mid-level marketing manager. By regularly presenting their team’s results at company meetings, they ensure leadership connects their name with success. This visibility can lead to opportunities like promotions, speaking chances, or even being invited to work by other companies.
Another key driver of the Matthew Effect is the power of networks. People with strong professional networks are often exposed to more opportunities than those with limited connections. Psychologically, people tend to associate success with competence. ____20____ This is why networking isn’t just about meeting people — it’s about creating meaningful relationships that lead to trust and mutual (相互的) benefit.
A. Being noticed contributes to the interaction with famous people.
B. It’s not always about talent or hard work — though both are vital.
C. More clients want to work with you when you’re already successful.
D. If people don’t know about your achievements, it’s hard to get more success.
E. The first big break in your career often sets the stage for everything that follows.
F. Early recognition builds confidence — not just in the people around you, but in yourself.
G. If you’re recommended by someone respected in your field, the recommendation carries weight.
B 17. E 18. C 19. D 20. G

以及下文“When your manager sees you do well in the first place, they’re more likely to trust you with bigger responsibilities. C选项“More clients want to work with you when you’re already successful. 与上文“opens the door to bigger opportunities”相呼应,且与下文“manager trusts you with bigger responsibilities”共同构成初始成功后的多重利好,符合“滚雪球效应”的核心逻辑,故选C项。
本段小标题为“Being noticed is crucial to the Matthew Effect. (被关注对马太效应至关重要。)”,核心关键词是“Being noticed”。根据下文“If you are an employee who consistently delivers outstanding work but doesn’t share that, you may be overshadowed by a coworker who’s just as competent but better at self-promotion. (如果你是一名持续交出出色工作但不善于分享的员工,你可能会被一位能力相当但更善于自我推销的同事所掩盖。)”可知,空处应强调“让他人知晓自己的成就”的重要性,反之则难以获得更多成功。D选项“If people don’t know about your achievements, it’s hard to get more success. (如果人们不知道你的成就,就很难获得更多的成功。)”直接呼应小标题的“Being noticed”,且与下文的反面例子形成逻辑衔接,突出了“主动分享成就、获得关注”的必要性,符合语境。故选D项。
【20题详解】
本段围绕“Another key driver of the Matthew Effect is the power of networks. (马太效应的另一个关键驱动因素是人脉的力量。)”展开,上文提到“Psychologically, people tend to associate success with competence. (从心理学上讲,人们倾向于将成功与能力联系起来。)”,因此空处应进一步解释人脉如何发挥作用。G选项“If you’re recommended by someone respected in your field, the recommendation carries weight. (如果你得到了你所在领域受人尊敬的人的推荐,这份推荐会很有分量。)”中的“recommended by someone respected”体现了“人脉的力量”,且与上文“associate success with competence”相呼应,说明这种推荐之所以有分量,是因为人们会将推荐人的成功与被推荐人的能力关联起来,符合语境。故选G项。

【答案】Dear Chris,
I hope you are doing well. Our school sports meet was held last week, and I challenged myself by running the 1500 meters.
The race was a test of both speed and endurance. After the first lap, I felt very tired and wanted to give up. But hearing my classmates cheering for me, I gathered my strength and kept going. I finally crossed the finish line, not in first place, but I completed the race. This experience made me understand the power of perseverance and encouragement. Sometimes, success is not just about winning, but about having the courage to finish what you started. The support from my friends was the most valuable thing I gained.
Have you ever participated in any sport? Looking forward to your reply.

In the warm sunshine of summer, Russell and his friends were roller skating, bringing laughter and cheer to clover Avenue. All of a sudden, an elderly woman appeared out of nowhere.
“Hello, Russell. Could you come to my house after school tomorrow?”
“Of course, no problem,” Russell replied, turning his head as he spoke.
The moment he realized it was Mrs White, he wished he hadn’t said yes. But it was too late—she had already left.
The Whites had just moved into the apartment on the ground floor, and the neighbors felt a bit uneasy around them. In fact, from the very first day, Mrs White had complained about Russell and his friends playing too close to her window.
The next afternoon Russell gathered his courage, knocked on her door, and waited nervously. When Mrs White finally appeared, Russell was surprised by her tanned skin and neatly tied white hair. “Don’t be afraid. I’m old, but not a witch(巫婆),” she said with a light laugh. Russell smiled awkwardly and stepped inside.
The walls of the apartment were covered with photographs. In one picture, a lovely girl stood in front of the Pantheon in Rome. “That’s my granddaughter, Cathy,” Mrs White said softly. In the small living room, Mr White sat in a rocking chair, reading his newspaper. “Please take off your shoes, young man,” he said kindly. Russell quickly took off his sneakers.
As Russell sat down, Mrs White came out of the kitchen carrying a big cake topped with bright strawberries. “I made this for you,” she said, setting it on the table. Russell’s eyes opened wide in surprise. “I didn’t know she could bake,” he thought. Mrs White cut him a piece. “Thank you,” Russell said shyly as he took a bite. It tasted wonderful.
After a short silence, Mrs White spoke again. “You know, Cathy spends a lot of time here because her parents work in Italy. She’s very sick, and the doctors say she should rest as much as possible.” She paused for a moment, then added, “Russell, since you’re the leader of your group, could you and your friends play somewhere else?”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Before Russell could say a word, a pale and weak girl appeared at the doorway.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The following day, Russell told his friends what had happened.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Before Russell could say a word, a pale and weak girl appeared at the doorway. Her face was thin, but her eyes shone with warmth. “Hi, I’m Cathy,” she said softly. “I often hear you laughing outside. It sounds so lively.” Russell blushed, realizing their noise might have disturbed her. “I’m sorry if we were too loud,” he said quickly. Cathy smiled faintly. “Don’t be. Your laughter reminds me that life is still beautiful.” Her gentle words touched Russell deeply. Before leaving, he promised Mrs White, “We’ll play somewhere else, and maybe visit Cathy when she feels better.”
The following day, Russell told his friends what had happened. At first, they were disappointed, but soon they understood. “If we can’t skate there, maybe we can still bring her joy,” one suggested. That afternoon, they decorated the small garden below Cathy’s window with flowers and colorful ribbons. When Cathy looked out, the garden was glowing in the sunset, full of kindness and care. From then on, Russell and his friends often waved to her before skating away, learning that real happiness comes not from noise, but from a warm and thoughtful heart.

However, for countless individuals across the globe — particularly those living in impoverished (贫困的) areas — getting dental care and having their teeth examined simply isn’t possible. Felipe Rossi, a dentist from Brazil, has devoted himself to helping turn this situation around.
Growing up in the USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home — Balsabo in Brazil — changed his initial plan.

There are however, major caveats to interpreting this research, she added.
A. Cautious. B. Negative. C. Critical. D. Approving.

12 How did Jonathan Pritchard react to this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics?

The next afternoon, Russell gathered his courage, knocked on her door, and waited nervously.
