B Twenty-two years ago,I went to London on a special mission -talking about establishing a museum to celebrate the founder of genetics,Gregor Mendel.Suddenly, someone came in and told me I had won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with Tim and Leland Hartwell, for our work on how cells control their division. Suddenly you become a public character being asked to do all sorts of things:to give lectures,to sit on committees and reviews you are not always well qualified to be on.A big problem is that people think you have something sensible to say about nearly everything.Over time,a potential red flag is that you start to believe that perhaps you do know about nearly everything. This is a disease I've called "Nobelitis",which I sincerely hope I have managed to avoid. Within a year of getting the prize,I was offered and accepted the Presidency of Rockefeller University in New York. The Royal Society, the UK's national academy of sciences, elected me president. The society traditionally elects accomplished researchers, which greatly helps it to be taken seriously when it gives scientific advice.Meanwhile,I became director of the Francis Crick Institute. What about my research after the prize?Doing high-quality science depends on high-quality researchers. When you are young and are starting a new field,it's not difficult to attract very good research colleagues because people like working with new researchers in exciting areas, but as you get older that can become more difficult.Having a Nobel Prize does help.I've just started three excellent new PhD students. It's a privilege for me to be able to 高二年级英语科试卷第4页共12页 pursue curiosity-driven research at this late stage of my career. Anyway, one thing I am glad to say what the Nobel Prize did not influence was peer review from my fellow scientists, responsible for assessing the suitability of my own research for publication, and my funding applications. My rejection rates have remained essentially the same before and after the prize. And that,of course,is exactly how it should be. 24.What was the author's original aim of visiting London 22 years ago? A.To honor a pioneer in science. B.To attend Nobel Prize ceremony. B.Being addicted to being a public character. C.ANobel Prize winner acting as a"Mr.Know-all" D.Being overconfident in a particular research field. 26.What do paragraph 3 and 4 mainly talk about? A.How the author contributed to various institutes. B.How the author balanced leadership and research C.How the Nobel Prize enhanced the author's reputation. D.How the Nobel Prize impacted the author's career. 27.What does the author take comfort in after winning the Nobel Prize? A.The ever-increasing public recognition. B.The objective and fair evaluation from peers. C.The closer cooperation with fellow scientists. D.The easier accessibility of funding opportunities. C A small device no bigger than a toaster has generated oxygen on the surface of Mars, bringing the chances of surviving on the red planet a step closer. The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, better known as Moxie, has been generating oxygen from the atmosphere on Mars,as part of NASA's Perseverance rover (漫游者)mission. Moxie produced breathable oxygen in seven hour-long tests conducted in various weather and atmosphere conditions since landing.During each test, the device produced six grams of oxygen, about the same as a small tree and enough to sustain an astronaut for 15 minutes. It's also found that even in extreme temperatures and after a Martian dust storm,Moxie continued 高二年级英语科试卷第5页共12页 to produce high-purity oxygen. "This is the first demonstration of actually using resources on the surface of another planet and transforming them chemically into something that would be useful for a human mission," said Jeff Hoffinan,a retired astronaut and professor at MIT. NASA and the MIT team are planning to build a bigger version of Moxie,as they hope advanced models will produce enough oxygen to support a crewed mission to Mars."We have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth to support a human mission, but oxygen is a big problem. If you can make it there,go for it and you're way ahead of the game,"Hoffinan said. The device uses pumps that absorb in carbon dioxide which is heated to 800C and processed to separate the carbon and oxygen.Carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)is emitted as waste while the pure oxygen is left behind. Expanding the device to support a human mission to Mars presents challenges. It is needed to run continuously for 400 days,a leap from the one-hour tests and its inner temperature should be controlled stably.Moxie has proved to endure the extreme conditions on Mars, however, and the team plans to assess the machine's limits in the coming months when atmosphere is thick and carbon dioxide levels are high. They say they just want to set everything as high as they dare and make as much oxygen as they can. 28.What can we learn about Moxie? A.It works well in a series of tests. B.It is stopped by extreme conditions. C.It aims to purify breathable oxygen.D.It produces oxygen enough for a team. 29.What is the author's purpose by quoting Hoffinan's words in Paragraph 5? A.To present a plan to further explore Mars. B.To demonstrate Nasa's ambition to win the game. C.To show the plentiful and useful resources on Mars. D.To highlight the significance of making oxygen on Mars. 30.Which of the following best describes the team according to the last paragraph? A.Cautious and ambitious. B.Practical and independent. C.Intelligent and modest. D.Courageous and imaginative. 31.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.A Nasa Mars rover landed successfully. B.Challenges for a human mission to Mars. C.A little oxygen on Mars,a great leap forward. D.Human beings survive with oxygen made on Mars. 高二年级英语科试卷第6页共12页 D Jade Benjamin-Chung,an assistant professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, worked with her coworkers to analyze the impact of hygiene()interventions on health outcomes in middle-and low-income Bangladeshi households. They found many common strategies used to protect children from disease weren't as effective as expected.Feeling curious, Benjamin-Chung and her coworkers identified a potential reason. Around 70%of rural homes in Bangladesh have soil-packed floors. As young kids eat and play on the floor, they often absorb tiny soil-based parasites()that spread disease. So they thought about the concrete floors, which could create a space easier to clean and reduce pathogen(病原体)spread. Benjamin-Chung mentioned their idea to Sarah Billington,an expert on concrete and building materials from the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. When Billington heard the team's idea of broadly replacing soil-packed floors with concrete, she worried the approach could have unintended consequences for the climate due to heavy carbon emissions()from concrete production. So Billington invited other Stanford experts into the fold to understand why concrete was effective in reducing pathogen spread and design low-emission concrete alternatives that kept those helpful properties. They wanted to develop a mix using materials that are easily found in countries like Bangladesh. Finally, one possible material was recycled fly ash,a byproduct of burning coal. The concrete mix was affordable, durable and produced fewer emissions. Then they did an experiment where they hardened concrete test tiles()made with alternative "green"concrete and then some pathogens were put into the tiles to measure how well they survived on the surface. The team's findings suggest the pathogens have similar rates of survival on traditional concrete mix tiles and"green"alternative fly ash tiles."This project could be a model for how to improve public health with sustainability baked in at the beginning,"said Benjamin-Chung. 32.What did Benjamin-Chung and her coworkers focus on initially? A.The bad influences of concrete. B.Disease spread in the neighborhood. C.Recycling methods of fly ash. D.Hygiene practices in specific families. 33.What made Billington invite other experts in? A.Her lack of knowledge of pollution. B.Her worries about health outcomes. C.Her concern about climate impacts. D.Her struggle with pathogen resistance. 高二年级英语科试卷第7页共12页 34.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.The alternative is effective at reducing disease spread. B.Traditional concrete does more harm to people's health C.The study helps reduce the cost of healthcare in Bangladesh D.The study offers good educational resources to medical schools. 35.What could be a suitable title for the text? A.Strategies for Bangladeshi Public Health B.Sustainable Concrete for Healthier Homes C.Hygiene Interventions in Low-income Homes D.Pathogens Spread through Building Materials 第二节共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Calligraphy,as an important part of Chinese culture, was an ancient art of writing words aesthetically ()36 Regular practice of calligraphy can have many benefits for the individuals and culture. If you can make it there, go for it and you’re way ahead of the game,” Hoffinan said. The device uses pumps that absorb in carbon dioxide which is heated to 800℃ and processed to separate the carbon and oxygen. Carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) is emitted as waste while the pure oxygen is left behind. Expanding the device to support a human mission to Mars presents challenges. It is needed to run continuously for 400 days, a leap from the one-hour tests and its inner temperature should be controlled stably. Moxie has proved to endure the extreme conditions on Mars, however, and the team plans to assess the machine’s limits in the coming months when atmosphere is thick and carbon dioxide levels are high. They say they just want to set everything as high as they dare and make as much oxygen as they can. 28. What can we learn about Moxie? A. It works well in a series of tests. B. It is stopped by extreme conditions. C. It aims to purify breathable oxygen. D. It produces oxygen enough for a team. 29. What is the author’s purpose by quoting Hoffinan’s words in Paragraph 5? A. To present a plan to further explore Mars. B. To demonstrate Nasa’s ambition to win the game. C. To show the plentiful and useful resources on Mars. D. To highlight the significance of making oxygen on Mars. 30. Which of the following best describes the team according to the last paragraph? A. Cautious and ambitious. B. Practical and independent. C. Intelligent and modest. D. Courageous and imaginative. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Nasa Mars rover landed successfully. B. Challenges for a human mission to Mars. C. A little oxygen on Mars, a great leap forward. D. Human beings survive with oxygen made on Mars. D Jade Benjamin-Chung, an assistant professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, worked with her coworkers to analyze the impact of hygiene(卫生) interventions on health outcomes in middle- and low-income Bangladeshi households. They found many common strategies used to protect children from disease weren’t as effective as expected. Feeling curious, Benjamin-Chung and her coworkers identified a potential reason. Around 70% of rural homes in Bangladesh have soil-packed floors. As young kids eat and play on the floor, they often absorb tiny soil-based parasites(寄生虫) that spread disease. So they thought about the concrete floors, which could create a space easier to clean and reduce pathogen(病原体) spread. Benjamin-Chung mentioned their idea to Sarah Billington, an expert on concrete and building materials from the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. When Billington heard the team’s idea of broadly replacing soil-packed floors with concrete, she worried the approach could have unintended consequences for the climate due to heavy carbon emissions(排放) from concrete production. So Billington invited other Stanford experts into the fold to understand why concrete was effective in reducing pathogen spread and design low-emission concrete alternatives that kept those helpful properties. They wanted to develop a mix using materials that are easily found in countries like Bangladesh. Finally, one possible material was recycled fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal. The concrete mix was affordable, durable and produced fewer emissions. Then they did an experiment where they hardened concrete test tiles(砖) made with alternative “green” concrete and then some pathogens were put into the tiles to measure how well they survived on the surface. The team’s findings suggest the pathogens have similar rates of survival on traditional concrete mix tiles and “green” alternative fly ash tiles. “This project could be a model for how to improve public health with sustainability baked in at the beginning,” said Benjamin-Chung. 32.What did Benjamin-Chung and her coworkers focus on initially? A. The bad influences of concrete. B. Disease spread in the neighborhood. C. Recycling methods of fly ash. D. Hygiene practices in specific families. 33.What made Billington invite other experts in? A. Her lack of knowledge of pollution. B. Her worries about health outcomes. C. Her concern about climate impacts. D. Her struggle with pathogen resistance. 34.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The alternative is effective at reducing disease spread. B. Traditional concrete does more harm to people’s health. C. The study helps reduce the cost of healthcare in Bangladesh. D. The study offers good educational resources to medical schools. 35.What could be a suitable title for the text? A. Strategies for Bangladeshi Public Health B. Sustainable Concrete for Healthier Homes C. Hygiene Interventions in Low-income Homes D. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom haircut immediately drew everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others. During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new desk-mate. Sara’s distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora? You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom. Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr.Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.” Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy. Laughing at Sara's hair has deeply hurt her.” This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed. He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Para 1:On Monday morning, Mike unwillingly approached the classroom.______________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ Para 2: At that moment, Mr.Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. ________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ 高二年级英语科试卷第 页 共 12 页1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $第一节听下面5段对话。 Which bus goes downtown? His hair had been cut so short that the skin under the hair was nearly visible. As he stepped through the door, the room erupted in giggles, nicknaming him “Baldy”. A few curious boys came up and attempted to touch his newly shaved head. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, Mike shouted out, “You are mean!” Tears welled up in his eyes as Mike stood up and ran towards the door. Para 2:At that moment,Mr.Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. With a gentle pat on Mike’s shoulder,he guided him back to his seat. As Mr.Stone made his way to the platform, the room fell silent. Holding up the crumpled ball of paper,he began to smooth out its wrinkles. “Each fold represented a scar of hurtful words. Even when we try to apologize,”Mr.Stone explained softly, “the wounds remain. Let us always speak with kindness and warmth.” From that day on,Mike learned a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and empathy. 听力原文: (Text 1) W: Which bus goes downtown?
