Protecting Taiping Lane: Our Heritage, Our Responsibility
Dear fellow students,
Taiping Lane, a historic street near our school, now faces the threat of destruction during urban redevelopment. As the Student Union president, I’m deeply concerned about it. This ancient alley isn’t merely a cluster of old buildings — it’s a living museum preserving centuries of local traditions, architectural wisdom, and cultural heritage. Each faded brick narrates stories of our ancestors, and every carved window embodies the essence of our unique identity.
We must act now! Firstly, organize guided tours for students to document the lane’s architecture and interview elderly residents, recording their precious memories. Secondly, submit well-researched proposals to the local government, highlighting the lane’s cultural significance and suggesting sustainable rebuilding plans. Lastly, launch social media campaigns using hashtags like “Save Taiping Lane” to raise public awareness.
Let’s unite and safeguard this invaluable cultural gem before it’s too late!

He had taken his final bite of the dessert. This was it, the perfect moment to ask the most important question of our relationship “Will you open a joint bank account with me?”
He laughed, a surprised bark. This wasn’t how I had imagined this conversation going. In my head, he would have been charmed by my directness. Instead, he looked like I had just asked him for his kidney.
When the waiter approached with the check, I felt my chest tighten. Here it was again, the moment that had been haunting me for years. This anxiety about paying started when I insisted on paying for everything.
In my Chinese American family, paying for dinner is considered an honor, and my parents, aunts and uncles would threaten bodily harm to win that privilege.
“Let go of the bill.”
“I’ll kill you if you pay again!”
I used to love this spectacle, betting with my cousins on who would win. My uncle had fast hands and the advantage of sitting closest to the aisle, but my aunt was cunning (狡猾的); she would hold up the waiter before he even reached our table, slipping him her credit card while pretending to ask about the dessert menu.
But on the drive home, I overheard my parents brainstorming other ways to pay my aunt back through groceries and clothes for her children. They explained that my aunt had just lost her job and couldn’t really afford that dinner. Everyone had let her win the bill to allow her to save face. I had it completely backward.
Suddenly, I saw the elaborate system behind the chaos. Behind the bill wrestling was a tradition of care, ensuring everyone was looked after according to their circumstances.
Years of watching my family fight to pay seeded in me a compulsion to always pick up the bill. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help feeling annoyed when my dates never fought back. Especially when I was laid off, I felt like no one was looking out for me the way my family had looked out for my aunt.
I tried American dating customs: letting him pay, taking turns, going Dutch. But it all felt like trying to love an itchy sweater.
Then I met Aodhán. Over dessert, I proposed a joint account. It would let either of us make the honorable gesture of fighting for the bill, while ensuring we were both cared for, no matter who “won”. But Aodhán sat there stunned. “I haven’t had a joint bank account since I was 10,”he said in his Irish accent, “with my mam”.
We spent the next 20 minutes talking about the weather.
I expected him to ghost me. To my surprise, he arranged our next date at Citibank. When the confused banker handed us our temporary debit cards with both our names, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years of dating: relief of knowing someone understood what mattered to me, even if he didn’t intuitively understand why.

They explained that my aunt had just lost her job and couldn’t really afford that dinner. Everyone had let her win the bill to allow her to save face. 以及第九段“Suddenly, I saw the elaborate system behind the chaos. Behind the bill wrestling was a tradition of care, ensuring everyone was looked after according to their circumstances.(突然间,我看到了混乱背后的精心安排。

wearing colorful costumes和carrying masks, snakes, spears and drums为并列关系,用连词and连接。故填and。
decade“十年”为可数名词,由over the past few可知,此处应用其复数形式,作over的宾语。故填decades。

本空作devoted的宾语,与主语they指代同一群人,应用反身代词themselves,devote oneself to doing sth.
故填who。
故填has crossed。

Dear fellow students,
As guardians of cultural legacy, we are obliged to protect the endangered Ming-Qing architectural complex in our city. These centuries-old structures, with their intricate wood carvings and symmetrical courtyards, stand as a living testament to ancient Chinese wisdom.
They have coexisted with our community, silently narrating stories of our ancestors’ craftsmanship and spiritual pursuits. However, these treasures now face triple threats. Commercial expansion projects threaten to dismantle their original layouts, while weathering and fungal decay silently erode their beams. Moreover, insufficient maintenance funds have left many buildings in precarious conditions.
To preserve this heritage, we should act immediately. Firstly, let’s petition cultural authorities by signing an online appeal on the official heritage website before June 15th. Secondly, join our “Guardian Alliance” to participate in weekend clean-ups and documentation work. We’ll also host photography exhibitions on campus to showcase their beauty, bridging historical values with modern appreciation.
Our generation must become the voice for these silent historians. Together, we can turn nostalgia into actionable preservation!

I grew up in a small American town where I was the only girl who looked like me. My classmates called me “Anna” because my Chinese name, Li Wen, was too difficult for them to pronounce. I tried to blend in, distancing myself from anything that made me different, including my heritage.
Everything changed the summer I turned sixteen, when my grandmother from Shanghai visited. She brought with her a large, antique wooden trunk. “This is for you, Li Wen,” she said, her eyes twinkling. Inside, carefully folded in tissue paper, was the most exquisite garment I had ever seen: a cheongsam (旗袍) of deep emerald silk, embroidered with a magnificent, coiling golden dragon.
“It belonged to your great-grandmother,” Grandma explained. “She was a renowned opera singer in Shanghai. She wore this the last time she performed before the war.” I reached out and touched the silk. It felt cool and smooth, like water. As my fingers traced the intricate, raised embroidery of the dragon, a strange sense of pride, fierce and unfamiliar, welled up inside me. This was not just a dress, it was a story, a piece of my history.
Grandma helped me put it on. It fit as if it had been made for me. Standing in front of the mirror, I didn’t see the awkward girl who tried to be “Anna.” I saw Li Wen. I saw strength and a legacy I had never understood. The golden dragon seemed to shimmer with a life of its own, its eyes seeming to hold ancient secrets.
“That dragon,” Grandma said softly, placing a hand on my shoulder, “is not just a decoration. In our culture, it represents power, wisdom, and good fortune. But for our family, it represents something more—the unbroken spirit that has carried us through generations.”
On the inside of the collar, my fingers found a small, elegantly stitched name: “Mei Lin.” My great-grandmother. Wearing her dress, I no longer felt like an outsider in my own skin.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

That night, our town was holding its annual summer festival. I had always avoided it, but this time, I made a decision. I put on the emerald cheongsam again, smoothing the silk gently as I walked out. The festival was ablaze with lights and laughter. When I appeared, some eyes turned to me, but instead of shrinking, I held my head high. Kids asked about the dragon, and I told them it was from my great-grandmother, a Shanghai opera singer. For the first time, I spoke proudly of my heritage, no longer hiding “Li Wen” behind “Anna”.
As I walked home, a man with silver hair and a kind face approached me, his eyes fixed on the dragon embroidered on my dress. “That embroidery... I know it,” he said, voice trembling. He pulled out an old photo: a woman in the same cheongsam, singing on stage. It was Mei Lin. “I was her accompanist,” he said. He told me stories of her passion for opera, how she kept singing even in hard times. Tears filled my eyes. The dragon on my dress wasn’t just a design — it was a bridge connecting me to my past, and now, to a piece of her story.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
