Did you feel like winter arrived overnight?
According to CCTV, many areas in northern China have experienced a lot of rain, along with a big temperature drop in October. Some places have turned on the heating earlier than usual. Also, Nov 7 marked this year’s li dong of the solar term (节气). So, has winter really come?
Liu Yueli from the Shanxi provincial climate center told Xinhua that li dong is one of the “24 solar terms”. In these terms, li dong marks the beginning of winter. Winter reaches its midpoint at Dong Zhi and ends just before li chun.
However, meteorologically (从气象学角度看), there is a clear standard for when winter begins. When the average temperature is below 10℃ for five days in a row, the first day marks the start of winter. This way, different areas enter winter at different times.
However, many people feel very cold even before winter arrives. This is because the temperature we feel can be different from the actual temperature due to factors like wind and humidity (湿度). When it’s above 0℃, a two-level (两级的) increase in wind makes it feel 3-5℃ colder. Below 0℃, the same wind increase makes it feel 6-8℃ colder, as reported by Guanhai News.
Also, this year, autumn was very short in many places. Warm temperatures went straight down to around 10℃. This big change from “warm” to “cold” makes it feel like winter is coming earlier, noted Xinhua.
25. What marks the start of winter in meteorology?
A. The date of the first snowfall. B. The start of the li dong solar term.
C. Three days in a row below 10℃. D. First of five straight days averaging below 10℃.
26. Why might people feel colder than the actual temperature?
A. Because of the clothes they wear. B. Because of the amount of sunlight.
C. Because of the wind and humidity. D. Because of higher body temperature.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. Autumn lasted longer this year than before.
B. Dong zhi is the first solar term of winter.
C. Different places come into winter at different times.
D. Big snow made the temperature drop quickly in North China.
28. What does the text mainly explain?
A. Why do people feel cold earlier this year. B. Why does winter come earlier this year.
C. How solar terms divide the four seasons. D. Why was autumn very short this year.
【答案】25. D 26. C 27. C 28. A

I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts (拼布被子). Surprisingly, however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.
This quilt originally (最初) belonged to my mother. She once joined a weekly book club with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee. One of the ladies, Emily, made my mother a small quilt.
For years, this quilt sat folded (折叠的) in my mom’s living room. It went with her when she moved to a small room at an assisted living facility (辅助生活机构). I never saw my mother use it throughout all those years. During one of my visits, I asked her why she kept it. She said it was a gift from Emily. I questioned further, as she was not so close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: “Because it was from Emily.”
After thinking this over for several days, I realized that the quilt’s value didn’t lie in its appearance or in its maker. It was special because it reminded my mom of being a good neighbor and caring for each other.
I inherited (继承) the quilt more than ten years ago, and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since. My plan is to one day gift it to my daughter, and I hope she will keep it. Patchwork quilts carry stories. The tales we share about our experiences turn everyday things into something special.
29. Why did the writer’s mother join the book club?
A. To write her own book. B. To learn how to make coffee.
C. To discuss her favorite books. D. To get together with her neighbors.

31. Which word best describes the stories behind things like patchwork quilts?
A. Boring. B. Meaningful. C. Common. D. Surprising.

C Three days in a row below 10℃.

30. What does the underlined sentence “Her response remained the same: ‘Because it was from Emily’” show?
A. The quilt was very expensive. B. Mom loved the quilt’s design a lot.
C. Mom valued the gift from Emily. D. Emily was Mom’s best friend since childhood.
31. Which word best describes the stories behind things like patchwork quilts?
A. Boring. B. Meaningful. C. Common. D. Surprising.
32. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Special Gift Made with Care B. A Useless Quilt from My Mom
C. The Unforgettable Story of Emily D. My Mom’s Book Club Memories
D

The stories in Qiong Opera often come from Hainan’s history and local stories. They cover Hainan’s past and present. They also show the local culture and lifestyle. These stories help keep Hainan’s traditions and beliefs alive.
