Carrots are very easy to grow. Here are some tips for planting carrots.
Knowledge before planting
As a general rule, carrots are planted in early spring as soon as the soil is workable or 3-5 weeks before the last frost (霜) date. Carrots will do well in full sun. The growing days to harvest (收获) are about 55 to 65 days from seeds.
Process of planting
Step 1: Use a hoe, a gardening tool with a long handle, to loosen (松) the soil. Make sure the water can go well.
Step 2: Dig shallow furrows (浅沟) in the soil, 1/4 inch (英寸) deep and one foot apart if you are planting more than one row of carrots.
Step 3: Put the tiny carrot seeds two or three inches apart, about 1/4 inch deep, and cover lightly with soil.
Step 4: Press down lightly on the soil to make sure that the seeds and the soil touch well.
※ 1 foot=30 cm 1 inch=2.5 cm
Notes after planting
**Give the plants about one inch of water per week.

①When we are babies, we laugh when our parents make funny faces. As we get older, we learn to joke with others to make them laugh. But is playing a trick on others only human behavior? Is laughter only for humans? Scientists have carried out the research on animal behavior.
②Charles Darwin and Marc Bekoff study dogs. Charles thought dogs have their ways to joke, like letting people get close to their toys and then run away with the toys. Marc also noticed that dogs often tease each other. One moves closer to another slowly and then quickly backs away. He thinks dogs do this to have fun.
③In a 2024 study, Isabelle and her team watched apes (猿) playing. They found 18 different teasing actions. For example, young apes would walk behind an adult quietly, quickly touch them, and then watch their reaction (反应). This is like how human children play. So, humor might have started long ago in our species (物种).
④Other scientists also found that some animals can make a sound like laughter. Dogs sometimes do it by breathing out quickly through their noses. Dolphins make happy sounds when they play. Scientists even found that mice make a sound like laughter when they are tickled (挠痒).
⑤According to the research, does the animal’s laughter really mean it has a sense of humor? Are the apes really joking or just trying to get attention? So far, the scientists have not given a clear answer. “In humans, humor helps make friends, solve problems, and bring people closer.” Isabelle said, “We’re not sure if this is true for animals, but it’s possible.”
26. What does the underlined word “tease” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. To greet someone. B. To play a joke on someone.
C. To help someone. D. To look up to someone.
27. What did Isabelle and her team find in their 2024 study?
A. Dogs make sounds like laughter. B. Apes have 18 different teasing actions.
C. Mice laugh when tickled. D. Dolphins make happy sounds.
28. How does the author organize Paragraph 4?
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling stories.
C By asking questions. D. By showing examples.
29 Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
30. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Similarities between Humans and Animals B. How to Have a Sense of Humor?
C. Humor and Laughter: Only for Humans? D. Animals’ Playful Behaviors

My primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. Mother would be waiting for me at the table.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to act the princess (公主) in the school play. But no matter how easily and well I performed at home, the moment I stepped onstage (上台), no words appeared in my mind. That morning my teacher talked with me. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I said nothing at lunch. But my mother sensed my upset. After lunch, she asked me to walk in the yard with her.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose leaves were turning green. We could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass as well. “I’m going to dig up all these dandelions,” she said. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
“Yes, every flower has value in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. “And that is true of people, too.”
Realizing that she had understood, I told her what had happened while crying. She spread her arms and hugged me kindly, “Not being a princess isn’t bad.” Soon she proudly said, “Just as all parts in a play are important, so are all people in life. You will be a beautiful narrator in my eyes.”

A. Dogs make sounds like laughter. B. Apes have 18 different teasing actions.
C. Mice laugh when tickled. D. Dolphins make happy sounds.

A. By listing numbers. B. By telling stories.
C. By asking questions. D. By showing examples.
