However, Mayes was naturally drawn to the sport, and his talent was obvious from an early age. His passion (激情) for football only grew stronger as he played for the High School under the guidance of coach Don Hodgins, who recognized Mayes’ potential and took a personal interest in his development. Hodgins’ support for Mayes went far beyond the typical role of a high school coach. He saw something special in Mayes and wanted to ensure that he had every opportunity to succeed in the sport. Hodgins helped Mayes get a place in a football camp in the U.S., which proved to be a turning point for the young sportsman. Mayes’ time in the camp gave him the confidence and skills he needed to become a successful football player. Mayes went on to attend Washington State University, where he played football and quickly caught the attention of National Football League (NFL) interviewers. In 1986, he was selected by the New Orleans Saints. Although he faced several challenges early in his work, Mayes quickly became a force to be treated seriously on the field. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons, becoming one of the most promising young players in the league. In 1991, Mayes went to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played for two more seasons before stopping work in 1993. Although he only played for a few years, Mayes left a lasting legacy (遗产) in the NFL. He was a strong-willed sportsman, and his success on the field serves as an encouragement for young sportsmen everywhere, showing that hard work and a strong belief in oneself can get over even the biggest difficulty. 24. C Churchlands SeniorHigh School (CSHS) has become part of the Blue Tree Project, a national movement that encourages people to be open about their struggles and aims to end the shame of mental (心理的) illness. Last week, excitement filled the air as students at CSHS picked up paintbrushes and turned one of the trees bright blue. Laughter mixed with serious conversations as they worked side by side. When a few drops of paint accidentally landed on shoes or clothes, no one minded — it only made the memory more special. Jess Hazeldine, 17, explained that painting the tree blue was more than just an activity. To her, it was a promise from students to face the issue (问题) of mental health. “It shows we, as students, are doing something about it,” she said. “It means a lot because we are taking an active role in fighting mental health problems among young people.” She added that painting the tree blue was also a way of showing that the students understood how serious the issue was, and that they were ready to work together as a school to address it. Acting junior school principal Lisa Campbell also shared her thoughts. She said the school would now be listed on the Blue Tree Project’s website, alongside many other schools and organizations across the country. “It shows that we are part of a larger community in this cause,” she added. Parent board member Genevieve McSporran agreed. She believed the blue tree would remain a lasting reminder. “It’s more than just one day of awareness — it will always be there,” she explained. She pointed out that the tree, visible to anyone passing by, helped build a stronger connection with the wider community. 28. What is the aim of the Blue Tree Project? A. To raise awareness of mental health. B. To encourage students to form a habit. C. To prepare for a community festival. D. To recognize the weakness of students. 29. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Attending school. B. Painting the tree blue. C. Drawing a picture. D. Following a schedule. 30. What is Genevieve’s attitude toward the activity? A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain. 31. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A student’s book. B. A school website. C. A research paper. D. A travel magazine. D For many teens (青少年), Saturday mornings are a time to sleep in. After a busy week of waking up early, weekends offer a chance to catch up on rest. A new study finds that sleeping in on weekends — as long as it’s not for more than two additional hours — may help teens feel less anxious (焦虑的). Sleep is very important for everyone, especially teens, because it helps the brain and body work properly. However, 75% of American teens do not get the recommended (推荐) 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. School, homework, and other activities require early wake-ups, and teens usually find it difficult to fall asleep before 11 pm. In the past, research has suggested that sleeping too much on weekends could cause health problems. But no one had looked closely at how weekend sleep affects anxiety. Sojeong Kim, a researcher from the University of Oregon, decided to study this. She focused on teens aged 12 to 15, as this is when sleep problems often start. The study used data from around 1,900 teens who had filled out questionnaires about their feelings of anxiety. The results showed that teens who slept in on weekends had lower anxiety, but only if they slept for less than two additional hours. Teens who didn’t sleep in-or lost sleep on the weekend-reported higher anxiety levels. Those who slept in more than two additional hours had the most anxiety of all. Kim believes that sleeping too much on weekends can cause “social jet lag”, just like the tiredness people feel when they travel across time zones. For now, she wants teens to know there can be benefits to sleeping in on the weekend. “Getting a little more sleep on weekends might help you feel less anxious,” she says. “But sleeping too much may make things worse.” 32. What does the author want to point out in paragraph 2? A. It’s hard for teens to get enough sleep. B. Too much homework is harmful to kids. C. Most teens sleep for over eight hours. D. Adults enjoy sleeping late on workdays. 33. What were the teens in the study asked to do? A. Finish a test paper. B. Answer some questions. C. Write a diary entry. D. Go to bed early every day. 34. What did the study show about teens sleeping in over two additional hours on weekends? A. They avoided “social jet lag”. B. They felt calm in the classroom. C. They experienced higher anxiety. D. They reported a look of satisfaction. 35. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. How Early Wake-ups Affect Teens B. The Best Time for Teens to Sleep C. How Teens End Struggles at School D. Mary was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several classmates watching her. It was her best sport. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped. When time was up, the counter showed 201 skips. Smiling, Mary flashed a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the school bell rang-class was over. Mary packed up her skipping rope. It was time to give her answer to Ms. White. That morning, Ms. White had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the class bulletin board (板报) for the upcoming competition. The student who usually handled it, Lily, was out sick, and someone needed to step in. Mary was shocked that Ms. White had chosen her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was terrible. But Ms. White reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and let her know her decision after school. Now, walking toward the teachers’ office, Mary felt nervous. The thought of her messy handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already made up her mind to say no. With that decision in mind, she quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground. Mary was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone nearby caught her attention. It was Tom from a different class. In her mind, Tom had never been good at long jump, but he was practicing it. Curious, she went over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without a participant, their class wouldn't get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Mary reminded him that he wasn't good at it, but Tom simply said that he knew that-and that it wasn't about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went back to practicing. What a similar issue they both faced! 注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 Mary stood there, watching Tom practicing patiently and hard. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With determination, Mary stepped into the teachers’ office. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高一期中英语试题 满分150分,考试用时120分钟 第Ⅰ卷(选择题,共95分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 What time is it now? However, Mayes was naturally drawn to the sport, and his talent was obvious from an early age. Teens’ Catch-up Sleep on Weekends 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Mary stood there watching Tom practicing patiently and hard. Every time he jumped, he would stumble a little, but he never stopped. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and adjusted his posture, then tried again. Mary thought about how Tom was willing to take on something he wasn’t good at just to help his class. She felt a little ashamed of herself—she was scared of showing her bad handwriting, but what if she could try her best like Tom? Maybe the bulletin board wouldn’t be perfect, but she could put her heart into it. The nervous feeling in her stomach slowly faded, and a new sense of determination took its place. She turned around and headed straight for the teachers’ office, her steps no longer hesitant. With determination, Mary stepped into the teachers’ office. Ms. White was sitting at her desk, grading papers. When she saw Mary, she looked up and smiled, “Have you made your decision?” Mary took a deep breath and nodded firmly, “Yes, Ms. White. I’d like to take charge of the class bulletin board.” She then added, “My handwriting isn’t good, but I’ll practice and do my best to make it nice. I want to help our class, just like Tom is helping his.” Ms. White’s eyes lit up with pride. She stood up and patted Mary’s shoulder, “That’s what I wanted to hear, Mary. Bravery to try is more important than being perfect. I’ll be right here to help you.” Mary left the office with a big smile on her face, already looking forward to starting her new task. 尝试:try/attempt ②.帮助:help/assist/aid ③.擅长:be good at/do well in 情绪类 ①.害怕的:scared/afraid/frightened ②.焦虑的: nervous/anxious/uneasy 【点睛】[高分句型1].
