It can take an entire village to grow a new-age garden. That’s what 42-year-old Shyju Machathi, a policeman living in Kannapuram in the Southern Indian state of Kerala, found out when his town was declared an “Indigenous Mango Heritage Area” by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board in 2020.
The honour came after the villagers had got together to grow over 200 native species of mangoes, sourced from surrounding towns and villages, preserving diverse varieties that were in danger of dying out.
The technique that made it possible, Machathi says, is the age-old art of grafting (嫁接). He started experimenting with the technique in July, 2016, despite no formal training in farming, after an unfortunate incident shook the town of Kannapuram.
A neighbour had cut down a 200-year-old mango tree known locally as Vellathan, which grew in his home. “The tree produced the sweetest mangoes I’ve ever tasted,” says Machathi. “It was beautiful, a native variety that was very rare.” But it was also undeniably old. Parts of the large tree would come crashing to the ground, making it so perilous that the neighbour decided that it needed to be cut down for his peace of mind.
Staring at the wasted branches the next morning, Machathi felt a deep sense of loss. “The tree was so much a part of our growing years and the landscape of our lives that we were all just shocked over losing it overnight,” says Machathi. Then he reached out to a friend who was working as an agricultural officer. There was a way to save the tree, his friend said. If they could graft parts of the tree onto a growing mango plant with a strong root, they could regenerate the old tree and one day, taste its exquisite fruit again.
“We then grafted 50 parts of that old tree onto strong rootstock (根茎) and managed to prevent it from dying out entirely,” says Machathi. “All of those trees are still alive — it felt like we’d saved rare treasure.”
4. What made the town of Kannapuram honoured in 2020?
A. Owning more gardens than other towns. B. Stopping a rare mango tree from dying.
C. Developing a new grafting technique. D. Preserving native mango species.
5. What does the underlined word “perilous” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Valueless. B. Risky. C. Thick. D. Disease.
6. What did the old mango tree mean to Machathi?
A. It brought him inner peace. B. It witnessed his childhood.
C. It made his home beautiful. D. It saved him from starving.
7. Which words can best describe Machathi?
A. Friendly and courageous. B. Helpful and experienced.
C. Resourceful and determined. D. Proud and independent.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7. C
根据第二段“The honour came after the villagers had got together to grow over 200 native species of mangoes, sourced from surrounding towns and villages, preserving diverse varieties that were in danger of dying out (这份荣誉源于村民们齐心协力,种植了从周边村镇收集的200多种本土芒果品种,保护了那些濒临灭绝的多样品种)”可知,小镇获得荣誉的原因是保护本土芒果品种。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Parts of the large tree would come crashing to the ground, making it so perilous that the neighbour decided that it needed to be cut down for his peace of mind (这棵大树的部分枝干会突然砸落到地上,情况变得如此“perilous”,以至于邻居为了安心,决定必须砍掉它)“可知,“枝干掉落”是危险情况,故“perilous”意为“有风险的”。故选B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“The tree was so much a part of our growing years and the landscape of our lives that we were all just shocked over losing it overnight (这棵树是我们成长岁月中如此重要的一部分,也是我们生活场景的一部分,以至于我们都对一夜之间失去它感到震惊)”可知,老芒果树见证了Machathi的童年(成长岁月)。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“despite no formal training in farming (尽管没有接受过正式的农业培训)“以及第五段“Then he reached out to a friend who was working as an agricultural officer.(随后,他联系了一位任职于农业部门的官员朋友)”可知,尽管没有接受过正式的农业培训,他主动联系农业官员朋友寻求方法,体现“足智多谋”;根据最后一段““We then grafted 50 parts of that old tree onto strong rootstock (根茎) and managed to prevent it from dying out entirely,” says Machathi.(Machathi表示:“随后,我们将那棵老树的50个枝条嫁接到强健的根茎上,成功阻止了这个品种彻底灭绝”)”可知,后续他成功嫁接50个树枝、带动村民保护 200 多种芒果,体现他“有决心”。故选C。

My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today’s grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel — grandparents taking fun-filled vacations with grand kids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grand kids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip-gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves. It’s not just kids gaining from traveling. Who gets the most out of this? You might think it’s them but it’s us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grand kids may actually live longer than their peers(同龄人).
It’s also important to recognize that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritizing experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves — some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip-gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it’s wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
8. Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad?
A. To lead in the trend of skip-gen travel. B. To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C. To stress the importance of family ties. D. To show the growing interest in adventure.
9. Which of the following may Annie Collins agree?
A. Many parents are too strict with children.
B. Grandparents benefit more from skip-gen travel.
C Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D. Children become mature when away from parents.
10. What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel?
A. They enjoy the moment to relax. B. They feel less anxious and stressed.
C. They miss their kids very much. D. They look forward to their own trip.
11. What does the author suggest grandparents do?
A. Get kids involved in travel planning. B. Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.
C. Reduce skip-gen travel appropriately. D. Make decisions in both sides’ interests.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. D

A wheeled robot rolls across the floor. A soft-bodied robotic star bends its five legs, moving awkwardly. Powered by conventional electricity, these simple robotic creations would be ordinary, but what sets these two robots apart is that they are controlled by a living organism: a king oyster mushroom.
By growing the mushroom’s mycelium (菌丝体) into the robot’s hardware, a team led by Cornell University researchers has engineered two types of robots that sense and respond to the environment by using electrical signals made by the fungus (真菌) and its sensitivity to light. The robots are the latest accomplishment of scientists in a field known as biohybrid (生物混合的) robotics which seek to combine biological, living materials such as plant and animal cells or insects with synthetic components to make partly living and partly engineered robots. Biohybrid robots have yet to go beyond the lab, but researchers hope one day they may explore oceans or search for survivors after an earthquake.
“Biohybridization is an attempt to find components in the biological world that we can use, understand, and control to help our artificial systems work better,” said Robert Shepherd, a professor at Cornell University who leads the Organic Robotics Lab.
Fungi can be cultivated in large quantities and thrive in many different environments. Fungi may have advantages over other biohybrid approaches in terms of the conditions required to keep them alive. This could make them an excellent candidate for biohybrid robots for applications in agriculture and marine exploration. The lab has produced more than 30 sensing and computing devices using live fungi.
However, some experts show their concerns that if biohybrid robots become more complex and are applied in the ocean or other ecosystems, it could disturb the habitats, challenging the traditional distinction between life and machine. Currently, this research hasn’t raised ethical questions, but if it continues to develop, it’s vital to consider the consequences of releasing them in the open.
12. What can we learn about biohybrid robots from the first two paragraphs?
A. They are controlled by human cells.
B. They are applied to rescue operations.
C. They may be sensitive to electrical signals.
D. They may have many practical applications.
13. Why are fungi used for biohybrid robots?
A. They are in large numbers. B. They respond to the environment quickly.
C. They are readily available. D. They can survive in different environments.
14. What is the potential problem with biohybrid robots?
A. Damaging ecosystems. B. Confusing humans with machines.
C. Losing control. D. Replacing humans on certain jobs.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To warn about the risks of biohybrid robots.
B. To present the concept of biohybrid robots.
C. To introduce the new development of robots.
D. To question the benefits of engineered robots
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. A 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

C. Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D. Children become mature when away from parents.
10. What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel?
A They enjoy the moment to relax.
