It all started when then 16-year-old Boyan Slat was scuba diving (水肺潜水) in Greece and was surprised to see more plastic than fish. The question “Why don’t we just clean it up?” stayed in his mind, and led him to devote his high school science project to understanding the problem.
After a year of experimenting, Boyan came up with the idea to use the ocean currents to his advantage, and let them be the driving force behind catching and collecting the plastic. Instead of going after the plastic, you could let the plastic come to you.
Initially, his idea did not gain attention. He decided to quit his studies and founded The Ocean Cleanup, with just 300 euros of savings as a starting capital.
Then one night in March 2013, things changed. He spoke on TEDx about this project. The TEDx video spread to hundreds of thousands of people. In a matter of days, an initial team was built, and it raised the first USD 90,000. The project took off.
Their early models had their share of failures — plastic slipping through, parts breaking off in the ocean. But they kept at it. In 2019, System 001/B finally worked. Then came System 002, which in 2021 gathered 20,000 pounds of ocean waste. Now they launched the Interceptor: a solar-powered system designed to catch plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. So far, Interceptors have been used in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, and Los Angeles — with more on the way.
Boyan Slat’s journey is a powerful reminder that innovation, passion, and determination can lead to significant change. His work to clean up the oceans has made a lasting impact on the world and serves as an inspiration for others to take action on environmental issues.
4. What inspired Boyan Slat to deal with plastic problems?
A. A high school science project. B. An unpleasant diving experience.
C. A cleanup research program. D. An experiment of ocean currents.
5. What is Boyan’s idea of the ocean cleanup?
A. Catching plastics by scuba divers. B. Breaking down plastics in the sea.
C. Trapping trash using ocean currents. D. Going after plastics with machines.
6. What was the turning point of the The Ocean Cleanup?
A. The donated 300 euros to the project. B. Boyan’s presentation in a TEDx video.
C The successful launching of Interceptor. D. Boyan’s decision to drop out of school.
7. What can be learned from Boyan Slat’s story?
A. Better late than never. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
B 5. C 6. B 7. D

Do you remember the last time you took a language course? When you finished the course, your language abilities were different from your classmates’.
These differences exist in every field. But in my field, the psychology (心理学) of second-language learning, one question remains unclear: why is it easier for some people to learn a new language than for others? Recently, I was excited to learn that scientist Xiaoqian Chai and her team at McGill University have been studying this question. They looked at students in a 12-week French course and found big differences in how much each student improved.
For their study, the researchers scanned (扫描) the brains of native English speakers before the course started. They collected samples (样本) of the participants’ French speaking and reading before and after the course. The results showed that the strength of connections between different resting parts of a person’s brain could predict (预测) how much their specific (特定的) language skills would improve. Specifically, improvement in reading depended on the connection between the brain’s visual word-form area and another. Improvement in speaking, however, depended on the connection between the speech-related area and two other regions. For both skills, stronger brain connections before the course were linked to greater improvement after the training.
These findings lead to more questions: If brain connectivity predicts learning, how can we predict the connectivity itself? I can’t help but connect this to research on bilingual (双语的) education, which shows that a strong first language is the key to learning a strong second language. So, the participants’ pre-existing English skills might have influenced their brain connections.
As we understand more about how the brain learns language, we can turn this knowledge into teaching techniques that play to each student’s strengths. The next generation of middle-schoolers is entering a more globalized world than ever, and they are going to need our help.
8. Why does the writer ask a question at the beginning of the text?
A. To share a personal doubt. B. To challenge the reader.
C. To summarize a study. D. To introduce the topic.
9. How did Xiaoqian Chai and her team perform their study?
A. By teaching students different memory skills.
B. By asking participants about their learning habits.
C. By scanning brains and collecting speech samples.
D. By comparing course grades from different schools.
10. What predicted language skill improvement in the study?
A. The participants’ age and background. B. The intelligence level of the participants.
C. The amount of time spent in the classroom. D. The connections’ strength of the brain parts.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The application of the study. B. The ways of English learning.
C. The importance of globalization. D. The number of middle schoolers.
D 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据第一段“Do you remember the last time you took a language course? When you finished the course, your language abilities were different from your classmates’.(你还记得上次参加语言课程的情景吗?当课程结束时,你的语言能力与同学们相比有了很大的不同)”以及第二段“But in my field, the psychology (心理学) of second-language learning, one question remains unclear: why is it easier for some people to learn a new language than for others?(但在我的研究领域——第二语言学习的心理学方面,仍有一个问题尚未得到解答:为何有些人比其他人更容易学会一门新语言呢?)”
根据第三段“For their study, the researchers scanned (扫描) the brains of native English speakers before the course started. They collected samples (样本) of the participants’ French speaking and reading before and after the course.(在此次研究中,研究人员在课程开始前对以英语为母语的参与者的大脑进行了扫描。他们还收集了参与者在课程开始前后的法语口语及阅读能力的相关样本)”可知,研究通过扫描大脑并收集语音样本展开。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The results showed that the strength of connections between different resting parts of a person’s brain could predict (预测) how much their specific (特定的) language skills would improve. Specifically, improvement in reading depended on the connection between the brain’s visual word-form area and another. Improvement in speaking, however, depended on the connection between the speech-related area and two other regions. For both skills, stronger brain connections before the course were linked to greater improvement after the training.(研究结果表明,一个人大脑不同静息区域之间的连接强度能够预测其特定语言技能的提升程度。具体而言,阅读能力的提升取决于大脑视觉单词形式区域与另一个区域之间的连接;而口语能力的提升则取决于与之相关的区域与另外两个区域之间的连接。对于这两种技能而言,在课程开始前大脑连接越强,训练结束后其提升效果就越显著)”可知,该研究中预测的语言能力提升因素是大脑各部分之间连接的强度。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“As we understand more about how the brain learns language, we can turn this knowledge into teaching techniques that play to each students’ strengths. The next generation of middle-schoolers is entering a more globalized world than ever, and they are going to need our help.(随着我们对大脑如何学习语言有了更深入的了解,我们能够将这些知识转化为适合每个学生特点的教学方法。下一代中学生正步入一个比以往任何时候都更加全球化的世界,他们将需要我们的帮助)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是研究的应用情况。故选A。
D
When considering the members of my social network, I often find myself enveloped in pure feelings of love and warmth, affection and support. A handful, however, arouse quite different emotions — a mixture of eagerness and fear. In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can consume all my goodwill. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies. Psychologists call them “ambivalent relationships”. According to a wealth of research these relationships are often more stressful. They can damage your mental and physical health.
Knowing this, the simple solution would seem to be to cut ties with these people. But our relationships with frenemies aren’t simple and escaping from them isn’t always possible or even desirable.
Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her Utah-based Brigham Young University colleagues designed a scale identifying four relationship categories. Try it: pick people in your network and answer two questions on a 1-6 scale. When you are feeling in need of advice, understanding or a favour, how helpful is your connection? Likewise, how upsetting is your connection?
People scoring 1 on both are weak relationships. Those who score high on helpfulness and low on upset are supportive ties; low on helpfulness and high on upset are aversive (令人厌恶的) relationships; both high indicate ambivalent connections — frenemies. They may be incredibly generous when you have a problem yet can also lash out (怒斥) with a bitter put-down when they feel envious or threatened. We might hope the good outweighs the bad in such relationships, but the research illustrates the problems of ambivalent connections are hard to solve, especially in work or family.
Furthermore, ambivalent connections contribute to telomere decline. Telomeres, protective caps at chromosome (染色体) ends, prevent DNA damage during cell division. As we age, telomeres wear down, and, when they become too short, cells may start to break down or die. Shorter telomeres increase the risk of age-related diseases.
Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection, so that we could manage expectations, focus more on the good in these people and feel sympathy for their unpleasant characters, while also attempting to reduce contact when they cause stresses. Just as significantly, this has reminded me to consider my own behavior — are there relationships in which I am the frenemy?
12. What does the underlined word “ambivalent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Giving support or encouragement B. Continuing or developing gradually.
C. Having a mixture of opposing feelings. D. Happening sometimes and not at other times.
13. What can be learned about Julianne Holt-Lunstad’s scale?
A. It measures the level of closeness of friendships.
B. It predicts the outcome of conflicts with frenemies.
C. It shows it’s difficult to find a solution to frenemies.
D. It compares the benefits of different connections.
14. What do we know about frenemies according to the passage?
A. Ambivalent connections can shorten telomere to prevent DNA damage.
B. Proper expectations and less contact can help reduce their negative impact.
C. Frenemies pose a greater risk to our physical health than mental health.
D. High expectations on frenemies improve the relationship.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Understanding and Managing Frenemies B. The Complexities of Human Relationships
C. The Impact of Frenemies on Our Happiness D. The Double-Edged Sword of Social Network
C 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据第一段中的“A handful, however, arouse quite different emotions — a mixture of eagerness and fear. In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can consume all my goodwill. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies. Psychologists call them “ambivalent relationships”.
根据第三段中的“Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her Utah-based Brigham Young University colleagues designed a scale identifying four relationship categories. Try it: pick people in your network and answer two questions on a 1-6 scale. When you are feeling in need of advice, understanding or a favour, how helpful is your connection? Likewise, how upsetting is your connection? (朱莉安娜·霍尔特-伦斯塔德和她位于犹他州的杨百翰大学的同事设计了一个量表,将人际关系分为四类。你可以试试:从你的社交圈中挑选一些人,用1-6分制回答两个问题。当你需要建议、理解或帮助时,这个人对你的帮助有多大?同样,这个人会让你有多心烦?)”以及第四段中的“We might hope the good outweighs the bad in such relationships, but the research illustrates the problems of ambivalent connections are hard to solve, especially in work or family. (我们可能希望这类关系中利大于弊,但这项研究表明,矛盾关系(友敌)的问题很难解决,尤其是在职场或家庭中。)”可知,该量表划分出的四类关系中包含矛盾关系,且研究借助这个分类,进一步表明友敌关系的难题难以解决。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection, so that we could manage expectations, focus more on the good in these people and feel sympathy for their unpleasant characters, while also attempting to reduce contact when they cause stresses. (仅仅意识到一段关系的矛盾本质可能就会提供一些保护,这样我们就能管理期望,更多地关注这些人身上的优点,体谅他们令人不快的性格,同时在他们带来压力时尽量减少接触。)”可知,合理管控期望并减少负面接触,有助于降低友敌关系带来的消极影响。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies. (如果这听起来很熟悉,那么你也有友敌)”和最后一段中“Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection, so that we could manage expectations, focus more on the good in these people and feel sympathy for their unpleasant characters, while also attempting to reduce contact when they cause stresses. Just as significantly, this has reminded me to consider my own behavior — are there relationships in which I am the frenemy? 故选A项。

The teenage years are marked by intense changes — physical, social, emotional, and developmental — that can be difficult to deal with at times.____16____ As you grow older, conflicts with family often increase, mainly due to the desire for more independence. Peer (同龄人) pressure also plays a major role, as teenagers are more likely to be influenced by friends while testing boundaries and seeking autonomy.
Conflicts during this time can also arise from the intensity of your emotions and your evolving ability to think abstractly. As you work on forming your individual identity, you may become more focused on the world around you, trying to make sense of your own feelings and form opinions on various issues. ____17____ As your outlook changes, these struggles may make it more difficult to navigate relationships with family and cope with peer pressure.
While conflicts are a natural part of this stage of life, there are ways to manage and resolve them productively. ____18____By expressing your thoughts and feelings clearly, you can prevent misunderstandings and build mutual respect. Equally important is active listening — understanding others’ outlook can help you find common ground and reach a resolution.
____19____Staying calm allows you to think more clearly and avoid worsening emotions. Techniques such as deep breathing or temporarily stepping away from the situation can help manage intense feelings. Additionally, turning to trusted adults or peers who have faced similar challenges can help you gain practical strategies for managing emotions.
While conflicts are a normal part of growing up, they can also be opportunities for personal development and self-discovery.____20____
A. Emotional regulation is also essential.
B. The most effective strategy is communication.
C. These conflicts are caused by misunderstandings.
D. With so much going on it’s no surprise conflicts often arise.

Be a Voice for the Voiceless: Protecting Our Wildlife
Good morning, dear teachers and fellow students,
It’s my great honor to stand here as a student representative from the local wildlife protection charity to talk about protecting our wildlife.
Wild animals are facing severe threats. Many species are endangered and their living spaces are shrinking, and some are even on the verge of extinction.
The reasons behind this are complex. Human activities destroy their homes. Also, the illegal wildlife trade brings huge profits, tempting some people to hunt them. Moreover, lack of public awareness leads to insufficient protection efforts.
To address this, we should take effective measures. Firstly, stricter laws must be enforced to punish those who harm wildlife. Secondly, more nature reserves should be established. Thirdly, we can raise public awareness through education. Let’s work together to protect wildlife and make the world a better place for all.
Thank you!

C. The successful launching of Interceptor. D. Boyan’s decision to drop out of school.
7. What can be learned from Boyan Slat’s story?
A. Better late than never. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

C It shows it’s difficult to find a solution to frenemies.
D It compares the benefits of different connections.
