Several weeks later, David invited his classmates to his birthday party at grandpa’s farm. Justin didn’t want to go at first. But he didn’t let David down.
The day arrived. David’s grandpa, Mr. Hamilton and David’s mother were busy preparing the party. So David decided to secretly take his classmates to explore a cave (探索山洞) near the farm. There was some large wood in front of the cave. David showed them how to round the wood and enter the cave. Other boys entered the cave one by one, but when David entered, Steven pushed David. Unluckily, he knocked down the wood. The boys were stuck! The only way out of the cave became smaller—too small for anyone to go out!
Justin looked at the hole and said, “I might be small enough to get out.” He crawled (爬) slowly and managed to come out of the hole. Justin headed for the farmhouse at once after he got out of the hole. Worrying about others, he ran as fast as he could.
Justin finally saw the farmhouse. “Mr. Hamilton! Hurry! They are stuck in the cave!” On hearing that, Mr. Hamilton left for the cave at once with David’s mom. Learning social skills is a key part of child development. The good news is that social skills can be taught. It is never too soon to start showing kids how to get along with others. Start with these most basic social skills first.
Sharing
A willingness to share a snack or a toy can go a long way towards helping kids make and keep friends. According to a study, children between the ages of 3 and 6 are often selfish when it comes to sharing things that come at a cost. While it’s usually not a good idea to force your child to share, you can point out sharing when you see it. Praise a child for sharing and note how it makes others feel.
Making eye contact
Good eye contact (接触) is an important part of communication. If your child struggles (斗争) with eye contact, offer quick reminders after the fact. In a gentle voice, ask, “Where should your eyes go when someone is talking to you?” You don’t want to cause a shy child additional anxiety. And, provide praise when your child remembers to look at people when they are talking.
Listening
Listening isn’t just about staying quiet—it means really absorbing what someone else is saying. After all, much of the learning at school depends on a child’s ability to listen to what the teacher is saying. When reading a book to your children, periodically (定期地) stop and ask them to tell you about what you’re reading. Pause and say, “Tell me what you remember about the story so far.” Don’t allow your children to interrupt others when they’re talking.
32. If a mother wants to teach her kid to share, what should she say?
A. You are such a selfish child. B. You must learn to share your toys.
C. Your sister doesn’t love a bad kid. D. Your sharing makes your sister happy.

A. being angry with somebody B. being very worried about something
C. being excited about others’ praise D. being too shy to speak with someone
34. What does the writer agree with about listening?
A. It’s just about keeping quiet. B. It’s mostly taught at school.
C. It’s more important than sharing. D. It’s important to know what others say.
35. In which part of a newspaper can you find the passage?
A. Travel. B. Science. C. Family. D. Health.
D
Do you love keeping a diary? Do you sometimes feel angry, sad or lonely at the end of a difficult day? Many of us look for ways to make ourselves feel better, perhaps by exercising, cooking, reading or watching TV.
But experts say starting a diary can improve your mental health by letting you release (释放) your feelings.
“It’s simply writing down your thoughts and feelings. And you can understand it more clearly,” according to the University of Rochester Medical Center in the US.
Julia Samuel, who helps people with their mental health problems, said, “talking” to your diary by writing things down can be as good as talking to another person. Writing a diary helps you to control your feelings and reduce stress, which can make you feel relaxed, and sometimes can help you solve problems.
Doctors sometimes recommend (推荐) diary writing to help people with mental health problems.
It might also help your physical health. Research has found that people who keep diaries have fewer doctor visits, and may even show reduced symptoms of some long-term diseases.
Writer Anthony Quinn says there are other “great advantages” to keeping a diary. Writing a diary can let you understand yourself better and see how you have changed, Quinn wrote in The Guardian (《卫报》). He said diaries can even be used instead of social media.
Many experts say it’s best to write a diary every day, or at least every week. Most experts also say people should just write—or draw—anything they want, and not worry about what someone else might think about it.
“Look at your writing time as personal relaxation time,” says the University of Rochester. It recommends that people write in a place they find relaxing, maybe with a cup of tea.
36. What can a diary do while exercising or reading can make us feel better?
A. Help improve our mental health. B. Make us feel angry, sad or lonely.
C. Recommend a place with a cup of tea. D. Worry about what others think about it.
37. What is “writing down your thoughts and feeling” for?
A. To make you feel excited. B. To release your anger, sadness or loneliness.
C. To be used instead of social media. D. To understand it more clearly.
38. Which statement is NOT TRUE about “keeping a diary”?
A. It helps reduce symptoms of some diseases.
B. It helps control your feelings and reduce stress.
C. It surely helps your physical health.
D. It helps understand yourself better.
39. What does the underlined word “advantage”mean?
A. small difficulties. B. good points.
C. bad reasons. D. warm discussion.
40. What’s the best title for the passage?
A The importance of keeping a diary.

Du especially likes Zhao Mengfu, a famous calligrapher in the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasty. “Before I copy his words, I often watch every stroke (笔画) first. It helps me write well,” Du said.
