In the vast and diverse world of animals, there exists odd gestures that often leave us humans puzzled and amazed. These gestures, which may seem strange or unusual to us, are actually fascinating glimpses into the unique behaviors and communication styles of our pets.
Animals want our attention, and sometimes they’re quite obvious about asking for it. Odd gesture are often our pets’ way of telling us to stop what we’re doing and play with them. It’s why Fido constantly follows his tail and why Kitty keeps rolling around. An extremely bored pet may choose “bad” behaviors to cause a reaction!
Sure, your dog loves you, but that’s not why he’s licking (舔) your face. A little dog learns to lick his mother’s mouth to obtain a little food, so Spot isn’t kissing you in our sense of the word; he just wants a snack.
Cat owners also misinterpret their pets’ kisses. While a cat might lick you to show love, sometimes she’ll do it to comfort herself. One way to tell if her licking is stress-related is whether it goes on for a long period of time.
At some point you’ve probably told these words to someone who made you angry. Dogs think similarly, avoiding eye contact with anyone who injures their feelings. Another sign of anger: yawning (打哈欠). A yawning dog may not be tired but anxious, not bored but stressed. Similarly, lip-licking — when there isn’t food around to bring about it — is another sign of threat.
You might think your dog is running around the backyard, having the time of his life while you’re away. But the reality is that he’s most likely just sitting in one spot for hours, waiting for you to return with anxiety. Dogs actually prefer to be inside, ideally with their owners.
4. If a dog intends to eat food, which action will it take?
A. It stretches its legs, yawning.
B. It makes an eye contact with its owner.
C. It licks its owner’s face with a soft tongue.
D. It runs around the backyard, following its tail.
5. What do we learn about the gesture if a cat constantly kisses itself?
A. It feels amused. B. It feels stressed.
C. It feels angry. D. It feels tired.
6. When the dog sits for a long time without moving,it reveals ________.
A. the dog is eagerly awaiting your return B. the dog displays a sign of tiredness
C. the dog is extremely bored to play with you D. the dog displays a sign of embarrassment
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Pets: Lovely Animals B. Dogs: Odd gestures
C What Your Pet Is Trying to Tell You D. What Should We Do With Our Pets
C
Farmers often lose crops because they cannot spot diseases fast enough. When a virus (病毒) spreads, it can destroy many plants and hurt nearby farms too. In Tanzania, several viruses attack crops every year. Farmers used to wait six months or more for lab results, but now a small, hand-held tool is changing everything.
The tool is made by a British company. It looks like a little box and is easy to carry to any field. First, a farmer cuts a tiny piece from a sick leaf. The tool then pulls out the plant’s DNA and reads it. Within two hours, it tells the farmer which virus is hurting the crop. This speed is very important, because the quicker the answer, the sooner the farmer can act.
After testing, farmer Asha Mohamed learned exactly which viruses were on her land. She was given two kinds of new seeds that can control those viruses. She planted them right away. Nine months later, scientists came back and saw tall, healthy plants and a big harvest. The same tool was also used in Kenya on Naomi Mumo’s pawpaw trees. The quick test showed the exact disease, and Naomi could choose the right treatment.
Because the tool is small and runs on batteries, farmers can use it anywhere. They do not need a big lab or a long waiting time. By finding viruses early and choosing resistant seeds, farmers protect their crops, their neighbors’ crops, and their income.
8. What was the main problem farmers faced in the past?
A. A lack of modern farming techniques. B. A shortage of high-quality farming land.
C. A slow process to find diseases in crops. D. An inability to afford necessary supplies.
9. How does the hand-held tool help farmers?
A. By watering the crops when needed. B. By increasing the growth speed of the crops.
C. By reading the plant’s DNA to find the virus. D. By predicting which diseases will spread next.
10. What happened to farmer Asha Mohamed after she used the tool?
A. She got more land to plant her crops on. B. She received money to help pay for her farm.
C. She was given special seeds that stop viruses. D. All her crops became completely disease-proof.
11. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A fairy novel. D. A science magazine.

Imagine that the battery on your mobile phone has run out. You can’t make any calls for help and no one can contact you. You are all alone, and well, not quite. Just reach into your pocket and take out a piece of sugar. Put it into the battery, wait a minute and you are back on the phone.
Thanks to a couple of American scientists, this situation could become real. Swadesh Chaudhuri and Derek Lovely have invented the “bacteria (细菌) battery”. This kind of battery gets its power from bacteria that eat sugar and turn it into electricity.
“This is a special organism (有机体) ,” Lovely said. “You can get enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four days from a spoonful of sugar.”
In the past bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting. But this battery uses a more efficient bacterium that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electrical energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.
The bacteria battery could become as small as a household battery. It is also cheap and stable (稳定的) , because sugar can be taken from waste and crops.
But the sugar-to-electricity process is not satisfactory as it could take weeks for the bacteria to change a cup of sugar into electricity. And it produces “greenhouse” gases which pollute the environment.
The scientists understand there is a lot more work to be done. “It is still young,” said Lovely.
“Where we are now is where solar power was 20 or 30 years ago.”
He also believes the battery will be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean. Other’s ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in the countryside.
12. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. An effective way to repair the mobile phone.
B. A scientific invention of a new type of battery.
C. A clean energy to reduce the carbon dioxide.
D. A new kind of mobile phone and its future.
13. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of the newly-developed battery?
A. Convenient. B. Stable. C. Inexpensive. D. Quick.
14. Which of the following are the scientists working on to improve the new battery?
A. Increase the bacteria. B. Solve the pollution problem.
C. Bring down the price. D. Change the size of the battery.
15. What does the underlined sentence actually mean?
A. The bacteria battery shares some similarities with solar energy.
B. Scientists will continue their work until they find solar power.
C. There is still much room for the improvement of the bacteria battery.
D. The bacteria battery will be as popular as solar power in twenty or thirty years.

“I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel,” said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram’s mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He helped her when he could re out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps. With the money he earned by selling them he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a “bank” almost full of what he called his “shrimp money.”
The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.
But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated, and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one a tag marked $4.75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.
He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his “bank” and counted its contents. “Three dollars and twenty-two cents!” he cried. “I’ll have that ring before another week.” Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.

A It feels amused. B. It feels stressed.
C. It feels angry. D. It feels tired.
6. When the dog sits for a long time without moving,it reveals ________.
A. the dog is eagerly awaiting your return B. the dog displays a sign of tiredness
C. the dog is extremely bored to play with you D. the dog displays a sign of embarrassment
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Pets: Lovely Animals B. Dogs: Odd gestures
C. What Your Pet Is Trying to Tell You D. What Should We Do With Our Pets

In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Years after, Hiram learned what he had bought was in fact only glass, and he decided to tell his mother.

【答案】 At the end of the week he had the sum he desired. Hurrying to the shop where he had seen the ring, before going inside he gave one swift, almost frightened look into the window. Could it be gone? No, there it was flashing and shining as before. That evening, he placed it on his mother’s finger. She looked at it in surprise. “It is yours, Mother,” he cried, proudly. “I bought it with my shrimp money.” “My dear boy,” said his mother, while something as bright as the shining stone flashed in her eyes, “not one of those ladies can value their rings as I shall value mine.”
Years afterwards Hiram learned that what he had thought was a diamond was only a bit of glass. “Did you know it then, Mother?” he asked. His mother nodded. “And you never told me.” “It was brighter to me than any real diamond,” she said. “The brightness I saw flashing in it was the unselfish love of my boy.” Indeed, nothing in the world is more precious than a sincere heart.
