The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house — my morning alarm.
As I walk toward the kitchen, I’m greeted by my mother standing over the cooker. She effortlessly cooks a dish that mixes Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe.
Since my grandmother’s passing, I’ve become more aware of my mother’s aging and her devotion to cooking for us. She has cooked for her family for more than 30 years, dividing her time between three countries — Korea, Canada and Germany. When my parents visit us from Korea, they stay with us for several months. My mother helps around the house, showing her cooking skills to provide delicious meals for me, my husband and our kids. Every other year, she and my dad will travel to Berlin to spend a couple of weeks with my sister and her husband.
According to Statista, most Canadians report spending between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their houses. Ten percent stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.
Her cooking goes beyond the kitchen, starting with careful grocery shopping trips where she examines produce and finds the best deals. She takes everyone’s preferences and needs into account. The meal she creates becomes a ritual (仪式), bringing the family together to connect and share. Helping her out in the kitchen requires a great deal of patience. Yet, I know it’s her way of expressing love. As I prepare the vegetables, she notices that my carrots are not evenly sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task. “Just do the dishes.”
4. What do we know about the author’s mother from paragraph 2?
A. She has great cooking skills.

6. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. Her mother dislikes being bothered.
B. Her mother expects perfection in cooking.
C. Her mother gets angry easily.
D. Her mother wants to teach her everything.
7. What is the key message conveyed in the text?
A. Mother’s recipe is the best in the world.
B. Mother’s love needs to be responded to.
C. Mother’s selflessness inspires my family.
D. Mother’s kitchen draws us closer together.

A good many facts show that it is more difficult to learn a new language as an adult than as a child, which has led scientists to think that there is a “critical (关键的) period” for language learning. However, the length of this period and its main causes remain unknown.
A new study performed at MIT suggests that children remain very skilled at learning the grammar of a new language much longer than expected — up to the age of 17 or 18. However, the study also found that it is nearly impossible for people to achieve fluency similar to that of a native speaker unless they start learning a language by the age of 10.
“If you want to have native-like knowledge of English grammar, you should start by about 10 years old. We don’t see very much difference between people who start at birth and people who start at 10, but we start seeing a going down after that,” says Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor of psychology at Boston College, who made this study as a postdoc at MIT.
People who start learning a language between 10 and 18 will still learn quickly, but since they have a shorter window before their learning ability goes down, they do not achieve the fluency of native speakers, the researchers found. The findings are based on an analysis of a grammar quiz taken by nearly 670,000 people, which is by far the largest data set that anyone has collected for a study of language-learning ability.
“It’s been very difficult until now to get all the data you would need to answer this question of how long the critical period lasts,” says Josh Tenenbaum, an MIT professor of brain science and an author of the paper. “But this is one of those hard-to-get opportunities in science where we could work on a question that is very old, that many smart people have thought about and written about, and take a new angle to see something that maybe other people haven’t.”
8. What is the best way for a child to sound like a native English speaker?
A Starting learning before 10 years old.
B. Learning English for at least 10 years.
C. Paying more attention to the grammar.
D. Studying with the help of a native speaker.
9. Why does the author mention the grammar quiz in Paragraph 4?
A. To introduce the largest data set.
B. To stress the importance of grammar.
C. To show the truth of the findings.
D. To explain the popularity of English.
10. How does Josh Tenenbaum feel about taking part in the study?
A. Worried. B. Lucky. C. Bored. D. Confused.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why children are better at learning languages than adults.
B. To introduce a new study on the important period for language learning.
C. To discuss the importance of words and grammar in language learning.
D. To compare the language learning abilities of people of different ages.

Has the smartphone lost its power to surprise us? For those of us who cover the tech industry, the answer seems increasingly to be “yes”. The newest iPhones are a clear example — offering modest improvements in speed and photography, yet failing to feel meaningfully different from the phones already in our pockets.
This is why some people in the tech industry are eager for something new and are asking, “What will be the next revolutionary (突破性的) invention to change our lives just as deeply as the smart phone or the personal computer?” At the moment, a lot of people believe that it will be smart glasses. Imagine if instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen like a caveman, all of the digital information you need simply appears floating right in front of you, in your glasses.
If the technology can be realized, the possibilities are endless. Imagine having satellite navigation (导航) directions appear right there on the road in front of you. Or imagine being able to secretly watch YouTube during a particularly boring meeting. Smart glasses could be big in industry too. They could display detailed instructions to engineers, so they can fix things more quickly. This sounds like science fiction.
What’s fun is that while our phones are not greatly changing, if you watch hard enough you can still see small steps being taken by the big tech firms towards technologies that will be directly applicable to smart glasses. So if the technology is here, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? The reason is that there is just one stumbling block (绊脚石) left: the screen. So far no one has invented a good way of projecting (投影) digital images on glass lenses. Though there have been a few attempts, such as Google Glass, they were disadvantaged by a very limited “field of view”. This is a problem that, behind the scenes, the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook are pouring huge resources into solving. So while I can’t say exactly when smart glasses will arrive, they could come into focus much sooner than we think.
12. Why are some people in the tech industry eager for something new?
A. Because smart phones were much different from the old ones.
B. Because the newest technology didn’t make real breakthroughs.
C. Because personal computers were not a revolutionary invention.
D. Because no technology ever transformed our lives basically.
13. How does the third paragraph mainly develop?
A. By giving examples. B. By explaining causes.
C. By introducing a topic. D. By describing a process.
14. What does the author think of the phones at present?
A. They are changing greatly.
B. They are helpful in developing smart glasses.
C. They are more convenient than smart glasses.
D. They are limiting the development of new technologies.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Smart glasses are preventing new technology from advancing.
B. Smart glasses are the next invention to change the world.
C. Digital technology will contribute to endless applications.
D. Digital technology is the basis of revolutionary inventions.

For a moment, I hesitated (犹豫), not only because there was no room left. But his following words convinced (说服了) me: “I could sleep on the floor. I’ll leave early in the morning.”
By chatting with him, I knew he fished for a living to support a big family. But what touched me most was that instead of complaining, he was grateful that his disease didn’t bring him terrible pain.

B. She has more than two children.
C. She lives with the author in Korea.
D. She invented the family beloved breakfast classic.
5. What’s the purpose of listing data about meal preparation time?
A. To show her mother’s love.
B. To present a common problem.
C. To stress the importance of home-cooked meals.
D. To explain the reasons behind infrequent cooking.
A 5. A 6. B 7. D

根据文章第二段“She effortlessly cooks a dish that mixes Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe.( 她毫不费力地烹制出一道融合了西方与东方风格的菜肴,这道美食在我们家成了备受喜爱的早餐佳品。这是我祖母的食谱)”可知,作者的母亲能够轻松地烹饪出融合了东西方风格的菜肴,备受家人喜爱,这展示了她的烹饪技能。故选A项。
根据文章第四段“According to Statista, most Canadians report spending between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their houses. Ten percent stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.(根据Statista的数据,大多数加拿大人表示,他们平日里为自己和家中其他人准备晚餐需要花费31到60分钟。有10%的人表示,他们准备晚餐要花一个多小时。我母亲就属于这10%的人群)”结合后文对母亲烹饪的描述,可以推断出列出这些数据的目的是为了展示母亲对家人的爱和投入。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“As I prepare the vegetables, she notices that my carrots are not evenly sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task. “Just do the dishes.”(当我准备蔬菜时,她注意到我的胡萝卜大小不一。她把我推开,自己接手了这项工作。“就去洗碗吧。”)”可知,当作者准备蔬菜时,母亲注意到作者的胡萝卜大小不一,于是她把作者推到一边,自己接手了这项任务,并让作者去洗碗。这个行为表明母亲对烹饪的细节有很高的要求,期望达到完美的效果。故划线句“Helping her out in the kitchen requires a great deal of patience.(在厨房里帮助她做事需要极大的耐心。)”
C
A. Starting learning before 10 years old.
A 9. C 10. B 11. B

D
B 13. A 14. B 15. B

根据下文“Then, tell somebody to call the fire department once that person is safely outside. Even if you’re able to extinguish the fire on your own, it’s best to have the fire department on the way in case something happens. (然后,一旦那个人安全到达室外,就让他/她打电话给消防部门。即使你自己能够扑灭火灾,最好也让消防部门赶来,以防发生意外。)”可知,本段强调在灭火前要确保人员安全,A选项“Get everybody out of the area first (首先让所有人都离开该区域)”中“Get everybody out”对应下文“safely outside”,强调首先要确保人员安全,是下文“告诉某人在安全出去后拨打消防部门电话”的前提。故选A项。
根据上文“Before using a fire extinguisher, it’s important to take some safety precautions. Locate the closest exit and position yourself so your back is toward it. (使用灭火器前,采取一些安全预防措施很重要。找到最近的出口,并将自己置于背靠出口的位置。)”可知,本段强调在使用灭火器前要找到最近的出口并背对出口,G选项“This will make it easier to escape if you have to leave quickly in an emergency (这样在紧急情况下需要快速离开时会更容易逃生)”承接上文,解释了为什么要背对出口,即为了在紧急情况下快速逃生。故选G项。
根据上文“Pull the pin out from the side of the handle. Hold the lower handle with one hand and grab the hose with the other. (从手柄侧面拔出插销。一只手握住下方手柄,另一只手抓住软管。)”以及下文“Squeeze the handles together, applying slow and even pressure. (一起挤压把手,施加缓慢而均匀的压力。)”可知,本段在介绍使用灭火器的步骤,C选项“Aim the hose directly at the base of the fire (将软管直接对准火源底部)”承上启下,是拔出插销、握住把手和软管后的下一步操作,即对准火源底部,且与下文“挤压把手”的动作相衔接。故选C项。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Sweep the hose from side to side over the base of the fire while squeezing the handles. Move closer to the fire as the flames die down. (在挤压把手的同时,将软管在火源底部左右扫动。随着火焰减弱,靠近火源。)”以及下文“This includes any sign that can restart the fire. (这包括任何可能导致复燃的迹象。)”可知,本段在介绍灭火时的具体操作,B选项“Continue discharging until the fire goes out (继续喷射直到火完全熄灭)”承接上文“扫射灭火”的动作,强调“灭火彻底”的要求,“until the fire goes out”与下文“防止复燃”相呼应,说明持续喷射是为了避免火灾重启。故选B项。
【20题详解】
根据下文“The average extinguisher will have enough agent inside for about 10 seconds of use. Back away and leave immediately if the fire isn’t out when the extinguisher is fully discharged. (普通灭火器内部的灭火剂足够使用约10秒。若灭火剂用完后火仍未扑灭,需立即后退并撤离。)”可知,本段强调如果灭火器喷完后火还没有熄灭,要立即离开,E选项“Leave immediately if you’re unable to extinguish the fire (如果你无法灭火,立即离开)”概括了本段主旨,明确灭火失败后的应急措施,即无法灭火时要立即离开,适合作为段落小标题。故选E项。
