(2) Conduct a True or False quiz: ① Malaria is a common cold. (FALSE) ② Tu Youyou discovered a drug to cure malaria. (TRUE) Invite pairs to share their answers and briefly explain.1. What do you know about malaria?
2. Vocabulary Preview (7 minutes)
(1) Word Matching: Present 5 English words ("medical pioneer", "artemisinin", "infectious", "cure", "limited resources") and their corresponding Chinese meanings (A-E). Ask students to match them individually first, then check answers in pairs.
(2) Phrase Drill: Introduce two key phrases "be awarded the Nobel Prize" and "integrate traditional and modern medicine" with meanings and examples. Encourage students to make their own sentences about scientific achievements and share with the class.
3. Pre-reading (15 minutes)
(1) Ask students to predict the content of the passage based on the title "A Medical Pioneer — Tu Youyou". Guide them to think about three questions: "What kind of person is a medical pioneer?" "What contributions might Tu Youyou have made?" "Why is she considered a pioneer?"
(2) Organize students to share their predictions with partners, then invite several volunteers to present their ideas to the class.
4. While-reading (15 minutes)
(1) Skimming: Set a 2-minute time limit. Ask students to skim the passage quickly to find the key event (The Discovery of Artemisinin) and the main idea (The passage tells the story of how Tu Youyou discovered artemisinin and became a medical pioneer). Provide skimming tips: read the title and first paragraph carefully, look for key names/dates/events, ignore difficult words.
(2) Scanning: Assign a 3-minute task. Ask students to scan the passage to find the exact year when artemisinin was discovered (1972). Provide scanning tips: focus on numbers and dates, search for keywords like "discovered", move eyes quickly. Then check the answer as a class.
(3) Timeline Arrangement: Help students sort out Tu Youyou's life timeline based on the text: 1930 (Born in Zhejiang Province), 1969 (Chosen to lead a team to find a cure for malaria), 1972 (Discovered artemisinin), 2015 (Won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine).
5. Post-reading (15 minutes)
