The librarian felt very proud, because she was always trying to get young people to take out books on Greek history, and she rarely found one who was willing to accept her suggestions. “Yes,” she answered. “Do you want to take it out again? Do you think it was very interesting?” “No, of course not!” said the young man. “But when I was taking it home, I met a girl on the bus, and I wrote her telephone number in the book. I want to telephone her; so please, may I look at the book again?” A Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) The Exhibition This exhibition of some sixty masterpieces celebrating the life and work of Scotland’s best loved painter, Sir Henry Raeburn, comes to London. Children under 12 years accompanied by an adult are admitted free.(4英镑。 根据最后一段“A special low entrance charge of £2 per person is available to all in full-time education, up to and including those at first degree level, in organised groups with teachers.(所有全日制教育的学生,高至并包括那些学士学位水平的学生,在有教师的组织团体中,均可享受每人2英镑的特别低入场费)”可知,全日制学生在有教师的组织团体中,可以获得折扣,即他们必须由教师带领。故选C项。 B Geda Qawla, who is 75, is having trouble remembering words from his native Ongota language. He’s one of only five people who can still speak it. As he gets older, he finds it harder to think of the names of things like trees and birds. “I can feel it leaving me. The others try to help me remember but they are the same, they are also forgetting and there’s no one left to teach us,” he said. Geda was afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with them. This is just one example of a bigger problem happening all over the world. Languages are disappearing fast, with one dying every two weeks. If things don’t change, by the end of this century, half of the 7,000 languages we have now might be gone. The ones in the most danger are those that aren’t written down and those spoken by very few people. The main reasons for this are technology and the way the world is becoming more connected. People who speak smaller languages are being pushed to stop using them and start speaking bigger languages. More people moving to new places also contributes to this, as they leave their native languages behind and learn new ones. However, some languages that were almost gone have been saved. This happened through long-term efforts to bring them back to life. These efforts included teaching them in schools, using them in the media (媒体), and even putting them on road signs. But for most languages, like Ongota, there isn’t enough money or support to do this. At Arba Minch University, some researchers are trying to save the Ongota language by making a dictionary. Some young Ongota people who have had an education also want to keep their language alive. For Savà, an Italian expert who studies people and their cultures, losing Ongota would be very sad. “When a language disappears,” he says, “you lose a special way of seeing the world that can’t be replaced (取代).” 24. What can we learn about Geda Qawla? A. He is skilled in his native language. B. He likes to teach others Ongota language. C. He is worried about the Ongota language. D. He has difficulties in remembering new words. 25. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3? A. Which languages need to be saved. B. How technology is changing languages. C. When we can keep languages from disappearing. D. Why smaller languages are becoming less common. 26. Why does the author mention Savà in the last paragraph? A. To stress the importance of language. B. To show the hard work in saving language. C. To recommend ways to view the world. D. To praise Ongota young people’s efforts. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. Technology and Language Loss. B. The Fight to Keep Languages Alive. C. The Challenge of Geda Qawla’s Language. D. Reasons for Saving the World’s Languages. C 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第一段“Geda was afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with them.(Geda担心,随着剩下的使用者年龄的增长和死亡,这种语言可能会随着他们的消失而消失。)” 根据第三段“The main reasons for this are technology and the way the world is becoming more connected. People who speak smaller languages are being pushed to stop using them and start speaking bigger languages. More people moving to new places also contributes to this, as they leave their native languages behind and learn new ones.(造成这种情况的主要原因是技术和世界联系越来越紧密的方式。 根据最后一段“For Savà, an Italian expert who studies people and their cultures, losing Ongota would be very sad. “When a language disappears,” he says, “you lose a special way of seeing the world that can’t be replaced (取代).”(对于研究人类及其文化的意大利专家Savà来说,失去Ongota将是非常悲伤的。“当一种语言消失,”他说,“你就失去了一种看世界的特殊方式,这种方式无法被取代。”)”可知,作者在最后一段提到Savà是为了强调语言的重要性。故选A。 通读全文,尤其是第二段“Languages are disappearing fast, with one dying every two weeks. If things don’t change, by the end of this century, half of the 7,000 languages we have now might be gone. The ones in the most danger are those that aren’t written down and those spoken by very few people.(语言正在迅速消失,每两周就有一种语言消亡。 和倒数第二段“However, some languages that were almost gone have been saved. This happened through long-term efforts to bring them back to life. These efforts included teaching them in schools, using them in the media (媒体), and even putting them on road signs.(然而,一些几乎消失的语言被保存了下来。 B。 C A new study carried out among teenagers in a high school theater program showed how teens learned about how to use positive emotions (情绪) to drive their work. Students also used strategies to manage their own and others’ bad emotions. The research was carried out through interviews with the students during a three-month theater program. This study showed how schools and programs can support the development of “emotional intelligence” in teenagers. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get an in-depth understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical. Two adults who guided the production were also interviewed every two weeks. What’s more, the researchers observed the rehearsals (观察排练) weekly. During the rehearsals, teenagers reported emotional experiences, including sadness, anger, anxiety, and excitement. The program provided culture that helped them learn to deal well with the events and feelings connected to these different emotions, the researchers found. The adults led by example, helping the teens develop strategies to manage strong emotions. “The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with incomplete emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, teenagers learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional learning.” 28. What did the new study find? A. Theater programs are popular among high schoolers. B. Doing theater helps teenagers with emotional growth. C Emotional skills are important to student success. D. High school teaching is a performing art 29. How did the researchers get information for the study? A. By holding interviews. B. By preparing a musical. C. By teaching at the local school. D. By reviewing students’ performances. 30. What can we say about the adults in the theater program? A. They experienced the same emotions as the teens. B. They were close observers of the program. C. They provided models for the students. D. They were in control of the new study. 31. What is Reed W. Larson’s attitude towards the theater program? A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Worried. D. Supportive. B 29. A 30. C 31. 根据第一段“A new study carried out among teenagers in a high school theater program showed how teens learned about how to use positive emotions (情绪) to drive their work. Students also used strategies to manage their own and others bad emotions. The research was carried out through interviews with the students during a three-month theater program. This study showed how schools and programs can support the development of “emotional intelligence” in teenagers. 根据第二段“Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get an in-depth understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical. Two adults who guided the production were also interviewed every two weeks. (伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校研究人员开始了开放式访谈,以深入了解一个场景——一个高中戏剧项目。10名青少年在三个月的时间里每两周接受一次采访,同时剧团准备了一部音乐剧。指导制作的两名成年人也每两周接受一次采访。)”可知,研究人员通过进行访谈来获取研究信息。故选A。 根据第三段“The adults led by example, helping the teens develop strategies to manage strong emotions. (成年人以身作则,帮助青少年制定管理强烈情绪的策略。)”可知,戏剧项目中的成年人为学生提供了榜样。故选C。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with incomplete emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, teenagers learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional learning.” (该研究的主要作者Reed W. Larson表示:“‘情商’的发展对成年人的工作和家庭生活很重要,但许多年轻人成年时情感技能不完整。我们的研究结果表明,在适当的条件下,青少年如何学习这些技能。尽管还需要进一步研究,但像戏剧项目这样的青年项目,以及提供这些条件的学校,可能会带来更好的情感学习。”)”可推知,Reed W. Larson对戏剧项目持支持态度。故选D。 D Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know. People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it. Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them. A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones” feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play. 32. Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset? A. I’m at the starting point of my ability. B. My mother is not good at chemistry either. C. I should start studying a little earlier next time. D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something. 33. What might the author encourage parents to do? A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids. B. To praise their kids when they do well in school. C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often. D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest. 34. What is the third weapon mainly about? A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no. C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills. 35. Which one is the best title of the passage? A. Making friends in High School B. Academic Challenges in High School C. Differences between Middle School and High School D. Preparations for High School: What you need to know 【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. 根据第二段“People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak.(拥有固定思维倾向的人认为他们生来就是厉害或弱小的)”可知,固定思维倾向是把人的能力归为与生俱来的。 根据第三段“The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades.(第二个武器是健康均衡的饮食。研究表明,每天吃营养食物和锻炼60分钟的学生在上学期间注意力更集中,学习成绩和成绩也有所提高)”可知,作者认为健康均衡的饮食很重要,可以帮助孩子们改善学习表现。因此,作者会鼓励家长为他们的孩子准备健康的食物。故选A项。 根据第三段中“This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.(最后这一“秘密”策略就是不要过度安排时间。要确保学生们懂得如何制定切实可行的计划,以及如何拒绝那些对他们而言不重要的任务和活动)”可知,第三个武器主要是培养时间管理技能,合理安排时间。故选D项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段“Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.(从初中升入高中可能会很困难,因为学生们会面临新的学业和社交方面的挑战。在高中开学的第一天之前,每一位即将升入高中的新生及其家人都应该了解一些事情)”可知,文章主要为每个即将进入高中的新生和他们的家人介绍了一些应该知道的事情。D选项“高中入学准备:你需要了解的内容”最符合文章标题。故选D项。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Advice for Cooking on a Tight Schedule From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money, and time. ____36____Money is a topic that I’ll talk about another day. So today I want to give you some advice about how to make the most of the time in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule: Think ahead. I usually think cooking is a pain when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials already?____37____ Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread?____38____It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. C A new study carried out among teenagers in a high school theater program showed how teens learned about how to use positive emotions (情绪) to drive their work. C. Emotional skills are important to student success. A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Worried. D. Supportive. D Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships.
