Scientists have created a clever way to protect farms from elephants in south africa. Of course, elephants don't attack humans or try to eat pets, but when these creatures wander near farms or houses, they can easily crush plants, structures or cars with their feet. Recently, farmers have started using bees to keep elephants away. Why would this work? Elephants aren't big fans of bees. When they hear recordings of bees through speakers around the farm, they run away. Bees can sting, and elephants can breathe these insects through their sensitive noses. The best part is that IT doesn't harm the elephants. IT just reminds them to stay away. This creative solution was proposed this spring with tests of its results beginning this summer and finishing this autumn. If this works, IT will protect farms all over africa. It's amazing how creative ideas like this can help protect both animals and farms. Now let's hear from the owner of this agricultural centre today. I have some interesting news for animal lovers. The Great Sock Mystery
I had a serious problem. My sock drawer was mysteriously emptying. It wasn’t a ghost or a burglar with a strange habit; it was my dog, Buster. A fluffy, clever, and utterly mischievous Golden Retriever. For weeks, I’d find single socks under the couch or behind the TV, but never the pairs. Buster would just look at me with his big, innocent eyes, tail thumping against the floor as if to say, “Socks? Missing? How peculiar!”
I decided to investigate. One Tuesday afternoon, I pretended to leave for work but quietly circled back and peered through the living room window. What I saw was a scene of strange dog business. Buster was not alone. He had company: a serious-looking Poodle from next door and a skeptical Beagle from down the street.
In the center of the room was Buster’s prized possession: his fluffy bed. But it wasn’t for sleeping. It was a treasure collection. My socks were piled high upon it — the athletic ones, the warm woolly ones, even my favorite pair with pizza slices on them.
The negotiation began. The Poodle, whom I recognized as Princess, stepped forward and dropped a high-quality, expensive dog biscuit at the edge of the bed. Buster sniffed it carefully, nudged a single, plain white sock toward her, and then pulled back his paw, guarding the rest. Princess seemed to consider this, then added another biscuit to the pile. Satisfied, Buster used his nose to expertly push two striped socks toward her. The deal was done. Princess picked up her new socks and trotted out proudly.
Next was the Beagle, Barney. He offered a well-licked, slightly flat tennis ball. Buster immediately looked utterly unfazed. He turned his head away with a snort. Barney cried, then reluctantly added a half-eaten pig’s ear to the offer. This got Buster’s attention. A quick exchange was made for one striped sock.
I burst through the door. “Buster! You furry little businessman!” All three dogs froze in guilty silence. Buster had the good manners to look embarrassed. He slowly crept over, not to apologize, but to gently nudge my least favorite pair of socks — the itchy Christmas ones from my aunt — toward my feet. It was a peace offering, a bribe to buy my silence. I couldn’t help but laugh. He wasn’t just a good thief; he was an excellent businessman. I took the socks. After all, every good economy needs a tax collector.
21. What drove the author to start the investigation?
A. The sock drawer was often left open.
B. Buster started barking at the sock drawer.
C. Buster’s bed was suddenly filled with socks.
D. Single socks were found in unusual places around the house.
22. What was the final outcome of the trade between Princess and Buster?
A. Princess traded a costly biscuit for a plain white sock.
B. Princess acquired three socks for two expensive biscuits.
C. Buster exchanged his striped sock in the deal for a pig’s ear.
D. Buster acquired a tennis ball and gave up two striped socks.
23. Which is close to the underlined word “unfazed” in meaning in paragraph 5?
A. uninterested. B. uncertain. C. excited. D. confused.
24. What might the author do at last?
A. Make the neighbor pay for the traded socks.
B. Report Buster’s business to the animal shelter.
C. Accept the sock as his share for forgiving Buster.
D. Take all of Buster’s collections away as a punishment.
【答案】21. D 22. B 23. A 24. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者发现家里的袜子神秘失踪,调查后发现是狗Buster用袜子和其他狗做交易的故事。
【21题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“For weeks, I’d find single socks under the couch or behind the TV, but never the pairs.(好几个星期以来,我总能在沙发下或电视机后面发现一只袜子,但从来找不到成对的袜子。)”和第二段中“I decided to investigate.(我决定展开调查。)”可知,作者因在家中不寻常的地方频繁发现单只袜子,才决定展开调查。故选D。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The Poodle, whom I recognized as Princess, stepped forward and dropped a high-quality, expensive dog biscuit at the edge of the bed. Buster sniffed it carefully, nudged a single, plain white sock toward her, and then pulled back his paw, guarding the rest. Princess seemed to consider this, then added another biscuit to the pile. Satisfied, Buster used his nose to expertly push two striped socks toward her.(我认出是贵宾犬Princess,它走上前来,在床边放了一块质量上乘、价格昂贵的狗饼干。Buster仔细地嗅了嗅,用鼻子把一只普通的白袜子推到她面前,然后缩回爪子,护着剩下的袜子。Princess似乎在考虑,然后又往堆里加了一块饼干。Buster很满意,用鼻子熟练地把两条条纹袜子推到她面前。)”可知,Princess和Buster交易的最终结果是Princess用两块昂贵的饼干换了三只袜子。故选B。
【23题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中“He offered a well-licked, slightly flat tennis ball. Buster immediately looked utterly unfazed. He turned his head away with a snort.(他提供了一个舔得很好、有点扁的网球。Buster立刻看起来完全unfazed。他哼了一声,把头转了过去。)”可知,Buster对网球不感兴趣,所以把头转了过去,因此unfazed意思是“不感兴趣的”,与uninterested意思相近。故选A。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Buster had the good manners to look embarrassed. After all, every good economy needs a tax collector.(Buster还算有礼貌,露出尴尬的神情。它慢慢爬过来,不是来道歉,而是轻轻把我最不喜欢的一双袜子——姨妈送的那双让人发痒的圣诞袜——推到我脚边。这是它求和的表示,想贿赂我让我闭嘴。我忍不住笑了。它不只是个偷袜子高手,还是个出色的生意人呢。我收下了袜子。毕竟,每个良好的经济体系都需要个收税人呢。)”可推知,作者将袜子当作原谅Buster的“税款”收下,接受了它的和解。故选C。
B
It was my first visit to California. It was also my first time on a plane and my first vacation without my family. Far from being intimidated by these firsts, I was resolved to enjoy myself from the very first day. We put on beautiful dresses and headed to Disneyland, swam in the Pacific Ocean, visited a ghost town, and took walks through downtown Sacramento.
The only problem was that I was getting homesick, and the more time went by, the worse it got. I missed my family. I desired my house, my own bed, and the food that didn’t include things like avocado and hot sauce, which are unavoidable in California. Most of all, I longed for the weather back home.
In my hometown, it often rains. I sit on the porch (门廊) during thunderstorms, watch the lightning slice through the air and listen to the fall of rain which is so heavy and constant that it sounds like a great bucket of water being poured out of the sky. I slide on a rain e on a raincoat to venture into a spring rain. I go outside after a downpour and breathe in the heavy, earthy smell of a world washed clean.
However, it was summer in California, and they were having a drought to boot. Every day was bright and sunny.
“I miss being home. And I am so tired of the heat,” I complained. Finally, in desperation, I prayed, “I know it’s summer in California, but some rain would be really nice.”
Unexpectedly, a wet drop hit my arm. Then another drop hit me, and another. But sure enough, it was raining. At that moment, I had much to say, but I chose to enjoy that in silence.
My vacation ended joyfully, homesickness forgotten, and when I returned to New York, I had wonderful memories of a fun trip. I treasured the time I was able to spend with my friends and the adventure of exploring California, but most of all, I treasured that rain.
25. What does the underlined word “intimidated” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Excited. B. Comforted. C. Disappointed D. Frightened.
26. What was a problem for the author in California?
A. She didn’t like the food. B. She had no place to stay.
C. She was tired of the rain. D. She was too busy to rest.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 3?
A. To introduce her hometown. B. To express her desire for rain.
C. To share fun activities on holiday. D. To show her expectations of trips.
28. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Sound of Rain in My Hometown B. My Adventure of Exploring a Rainy City
C. My Bittersweet Memories of a Dry Day D. Timely Rain During My Trip in California
【答案】25. D 26. A 27. B 28. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。作者首次独自去加州旅行,因炎热干旱想家,后意外迎来降雨,让她难忘这次旅程,尤其珍惜那场雨。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“Far from being intimidated by these firsts, I was resolved to enjoy myself from the very first day.(我非但没有被这些第一次所____,反而下定决心从第一天起就好好享受。)”中“Far from(非但不)”表转折,并结合后文“resolved to enjoy myself(决心好好享受)”可推知,划线词应与“享受”情感相反。所以猜测intimidated表“害怕的”意思。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The only problem was that I was getting homesick, and the more time went by, the worse it got. I missed my family. I desired my house, my own bed, and the food that didn’t include things like avocado and hot sauce, which are unavoidable in California. (唯一的问题是我开始想家了,而且时间越久,这种感觉就越强烈。我想念我的家人,渴望回到自己的家、自己的床上,想吃不含牛油果和辣酱之类的食物——而这些在加利福尼亚却无处不在)”可知,作者在加州遇到的问题包括不喜欢当地食物。故选A。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“In my hometown, it often rains. I sit on the porch (门廊) during thunderstorms, watch the lightning slice through the air and listen to the fall of rain which is so heavy and constant that it sounds like a great bucket of water being poured out of the sky. I slide on a rain e on a raincoat to venture into a spring rain. Watching sports, particularly at large gatherings, goes beyond entertainment. It fosters a sense of community and belonging among audiences. Although it is popularly recognized for its positive effects, existing studies on the relationship between watching sports and well-being offer only limited evidence.
Recognizing this gap, a team of researchers led by Associate Professor Shintaro Sato from the Faculty of Sport Sciences, Waseda University, Japan, embarked on a groundbreaking study. A significant challenge in well-being research is the subjective nature of measurement procedures, potentially leading to biased findings. “Therefore, our studies focused on both subjective and objective measures of well-being.” explains Prof. Sato.
In the first study, an online survey was aimed at investigating whether the connection between sports viewing and well-being varied depending on the type of sport observed. The experiment exposed participants to various sports videos, assessing their well-being both before and after viewing. The findings underscored that widely embraced sports, like baseball, exerted a more significant impact on enhancing well-being compared to less popular sports, such as golf.
However, the most groundbreaking aspect of this research emerged in the second study. Here, the team employed neuroimaging techniques to examine alterations in brain activity following sports viewing. Using multimodal MRI neuroimaging measurement procedures, the brain activity of fourteen able-bodied Japanese participants was analyzed while they watched sports clips. The results showed that, sports viewing triggered activation in the brain’s reward circuits, indicative of feelings of happiness or pleasure. Additionally, a noteworthy finding surfaced in the structural image analysis. It revealed that individuals watching sports more frequently exhibited greater gray matter volume in regions associated with reward circuits, suggesting that regular sports viewing may gradually cause changes in brain structures. Both subjective and objective measures of well-being were found to be positively influenced by engaging in sports viewing.
The study has profound implications and theoretical contributions to sports management literature. Existing literature has primarily focused on sports fans; however, this study has taken into consideration a larger general population irrespective of their relationship to sports consumption. This research can contribute significantly to sports management practices and policymaking for public health.
29. Why did Shintaro Sato conduct the research?
A. To arouse public interest. B. To provide more evidence.
C. To entertain larger audience. D. To contradict existing studies.
30. What may be a suggested way to boost well-being according to the study?
A. Playing golf frequently. B. Watching baseball regularly.
C. Identifying types of sports accurately. D. Organizing sports events occasionally.
31. What can be learned about changes in brain?
A. Golf playing boosts brain’s activity.
B. Different sports cause better brain image.
C. Soccer playing triggers brain’s reward circuits.
D. Regular sports viewing affects gray matter volume.
32. What is the potential contribution of this research?
A. Better policy for public health.
B. Stricter requirements on sports fans.
C. Bitter comments on existing literature.
D. Deep understanding of relationship management.

With each iteration of its products, Apple orchestrates a symphony of anticipation, intrigue, and speculation. Yet, beneath the surface of its sleek designs and groundbreaking features lies a labyrinthine narrative that defies conventional comprehension (策划).

The Secret to Taking Great Notes
Taking good notes is a key part of the learning process. However, merely writing down what you hear word-for-word is ineffective. Here are some proven strategies to transform your note-taking.
One of the most popular and structured systems is the Cornell Method, developed for and widely taught at Cornell University. ____37____ This physical layout guides your thinking process. During class, take notes in the main section. After class, use the cue column to write keywords or questions. Finally, write a brief summary of the entire lesson at the bottom of the page. This multi-step process is scientifically proven to significantly improve long-term memory retention.
For those who think in images and connections, Mind Mapping is a visual way to organize information. Start with the main topic in the center and draw branches out for key subtopics. ____38____ You can use colors, symbols, and arrows to make connections. This method is especially beneficial for visual learners as it shows the relationships between concepts, making complex topics easier to grasp.
Regardless of the method you choose, the core principle is active engagement. Don’t just passively record information. ____39____ Engage with the material by paraphrasing the speaker’s points. This forces you to process and understand the information on the spot.
Of course, the best method is the one that works for you. ____40____ You might use the Cornell Method for history lectures, which are dense with facts, but a Mind Map for brainstorming an essay topic. You might even combine different elements from various methods to create your own personalized system.
____41____ Review your notes periodically within 24 hours of taking them. This short, spaced repetition is one of the most powerful ways to move information from your short-term to your long-term memory, solidifying your learning and making exam preparation much less stressful.

It was a cold winter evening, and Sarah was walking home from school. As she turned the corner onto her street, she noticed an old man sitting on a bench, shivering in the cold. Without hesitation, Sarah approached him and offered her coat.
The old man looked up, surprised by her kindness. “Thank you, young lady,” he said with a grateful smile.
Sarah smiled back and said, “You’re welcome. It’s freezing out here. Are you okay? Do you need help?”
The old man nodded. “I’m just waiting for my son to pick me up, but he’s running late. I’ll be fine.”
Sarah felt a pang of sympathy for the old man. She sat down beside him and struck up a conversation to keep him company. They talked about everything from the weather to their favorite books.
Just as they were engrossed in conversation, Sarah’s phone rang. It was her mother, wondering where she was.
“I have to go,” Sarah said reluctantly, “but I hope your son arrives soon. Take care, sir.”
As Sarah walked away, she couldn’t shake the feeling of warmth that had enveloped her during their conversation. Little did she know, this chance encounter would change both their lives in ways they never expected.

【答案】 Sarah felt a mix of emotions as she arrived home. She couldn’t stop thinking about the old man and whether his son had arrived yet. The kindness she had shown him made her feel a sense of fulfillment, but she was also worried about his well-being. Later that evening, she decided to check on him. She grabbed a warm blanket and headed back to the bench. To her relief, she saw the old man still there, but this time, he wasn’t alone. A man, presumably his son, was sitting beside him, holding his hand and speaking softly. Sarah hesitated for a moment, then approached them.
Witnessing the reunion between the old man and his son brought tears to Sarah’s eyes. The son looked up and thanked her for her kindness. “I’m so grateful you kept my father company,” he said. Sarah smiled, feeling a deep sense of joy. The old man reached out and gently squeezed her hand, his eyes filled with gratitude. From that day on, Sarah and the old man’s family became close friends, and she often visited them, sharing stories and laughter. This simple act of kindness had not only warmed the old man’s heart but also created a bond that would last a lifetime.

A. Then, add smaller branches for specific details.
B. Therefore, it is popular among university students.
C. Ultimately, it’s crucial to review your notes afterward.
D. Experiment with different techniques to find your favorite.
E. This means you can paraphrase the content in your own words.
F. Instead, focus on summarizing the main idea in simple elegant words.
G. It divides your paper into a cue column, a notes section, and a summary area.
