Just a few years ago, Marilyn Schlossbach was sitting at the top of the Jersey Shore food chain. Her wildly popular restaurant Langosta Lounge had been a driving force in the town’s renewal. She owned the Salt Water Market, Asbury Park Yacht Club and Pop’s Garage. Labrador Lounge, which she’d opened in Normandy in 2005, was always packed, too. She seemed to have the Midas touch (点金术).
But things were not as they seemed. She was deep in debt. The borrowing had started with a million-dollar loan to reconstruct after Hurricane Sandy. With high rents, low profits and the seasonality of the restaurant business, she couldn’t get ahead. The profits were so slim that it seemed like a choice between lowering the food quality or making money. “To create the kind of food we wanted, with quality service and labor, we were borrowing money all the time,” she says.
In 2023, she sold Labrador Lounge and set her sights on Long Branch, which she calls the “last undeveloped coastal area around here.” She teamed up with Preston Casertano on the Whitechapel Projects, which she calls a “cultural, public center for food, drink, arts and entertainment” in the Lower Broadway area. Buzz (人气) is building, but it’s been harder than anticipated. “We have no foot traffic,” she says. “We are literally 200 feet from Pier Village, but no one leaves there to come over here.”
Though facing difficulty, she still sticks to her humanitarian work. She has partnered with the nonprofit Interfaith Neighbors, giving out food every Tuesday, and starting the Kula Café to train young people from the inner cities to work the front of the house in restaurants.
But her real passion project is Whitechapel, which she hopes will help turn the Lower Broadway area into an arts district. “Our building is probably one of the most art-driven spaces at the Jersey Shore,” she says.
“We can be a power for change in this neighborhood and community,” she says. “That’s the goal I’ve pursued my whole career. I’ve found that cooperation — rather than telling everyone how it will be — works best. This model allows me to achieve that.”
4. What was the initial cause of Schlossbach’s heavy debt?
A. Poor management.
B. Employees’ high salary.
C. Investment in rebuilding.
D. Rising price after hurricane.
5. What challenge did Schlossbach meet in the Whitechapel Projects?
A. Lack of fund. B. Fewer visitors.
C. No partners. D. Low food quality.
6 What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph most likely refer to?
A. The cooperative working style.
B. The act of giving orders.
C. The process of sharing ideas.
D. The goal of driving community change.
7. Which words best describe Marilyn Schlossbach?
A. Optimistic and humble.
B. Responsible and humorous.
C. Ambitious and inspiring.
D. Adaptable and straightforward.

A group of more than 70 authors released an open letter on Friday about the use of AI on the literary website Lit Hub. It asked publishing houses to promise “they will never release books that were created by machines.”
The letter contains a list of direct requests to publishers concerning many ways in which AI may already — or could soon be — used in publishing. It asks them to avoid publishing books written using AI tools built on copyrighted content without authors’ agreement, to avoid replacing publishing house employees wholly or partially with AI tools, and to only hire human audiobook narrators (有声书配音员) — among other requests.
“The writing that AI produces feels cheap because it is cheap. It feels simple because it is simple to produce. That is the whole point,” the letter states. “AI is a powerful tool, but the replacement of art and artists isn’t one of them.”
Until now, authors have mostly expressed their displeasure with AI’s negative impacts on their work by launching lawsuits (诉讼) against AI companies rather than addressing publishing houses directly. Earlier this week, federal judges in charge of two such cases ruled in favor of defendants Anthropic AI and Meta, potentially giving AI companies the legal right to train their large language models on copyrighted works—as long as they obtain copies of those works legally.
Young adult fiction author Rioghnach Robinson, who is one of the organizers of the letter, said these rulings make protection measures even more urgent. “As courts now allow AI to use copyrighted texts as ‘fair use’, publishers must become the main defense,” she said. “If publishers don’t promise to avoid using AI to create books that compete with their own authors, nothing will stop AI from replacing human writers completely.”
National Public Radio reached out to the publishing houses named in the letter, and received one response. “Simon & Schuster takes these requirements seriously, “spokesperson Susannah Lawrence said in a statement. “We are actively engaged in protecting the intellectual property rights of our authors.”
8. What do the authors advocate in the letter?
A. Audiobooks should be read by machines.
B. Lit Hub should avoid co-working with publishers.
C. Publishers must never publish Al-generated books.
D. AI should replace employees in publishing houses.
9. What can we infer about AI writing books from paragraph 4?
A. It is supported by original authors.
B. It is against intellectual property rights.
C. It should first obtain legal permission.
D. It should be strictly prohibited by law.
10. What is Robinson’s attitude toward the result of lawsuits?
A Favorable. B. Concerned.
C. Puzzled. D. Relieved.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI Encounters Doubts from Publishers
B. Works by AI Are Flooding the Internet
C. Worries about AI Works Are Dismissing
D. Authors Protest Publishers’ Use of AI

A Stanford University-led study shows that in Costa Rica, even limited tree cover can reduce the presence of invasive (入侵性的) mosquito species known to spread diseases.
Using field observations and satellite data on land cover for a patchwork of forests, farms, and residential areas in southern Costa Rica, the researchers found the presence of the Aedes albopictus mosquito, an invasive mosquito species, decreased in areas with more tree cover while the total number of mosquito species increased. That’s because more species leads to more competition, making it harder for an invasive species to find unoccupied space or resources. Also, more diverse environments are often more stable and resilient (可迅速恢复的) to disturbance, making them more resistant to fast-spreading, opportunistic invaders like Aedes albopictus.
Costa Rica has many mosquito-borne diseases and two invasive mosquito species serving as carriers. The forests surveyed in the study hosted a high diversity of mosquito species, none of which were the disease carrier Aedes albopictus. Residential areas, by contrast, had lower overall diversity and were far more likely to attract the invasive, disease-spreading species. Agricultural areas fell somewhere in between, with outcomes seemingly tied to the intensity and type of land use.
Natural habitats exist alongside agriculture and development in rural areas throughout the world. In Costa Rica and beyond, these areas can provide pathways to conserving biodiversity. The study’s findings offer a potential strategy: protecting trees can help conserve biodiversity while also reducing the likelihood of disease transmission (传播). That is good news in the face of warmer temperatures, changes in rainfall, and human activity that are enabling the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses to new places often unprepared to deal with them.
The researchers emphasize the need to do more research to understand how other disease carriers respond to increased tree cover and what factors beyond tree cover contribute to the spread of diseases. The study stresses the continued importance of forest reserves. Still, researchers point out that planting trees outside of forests should be viewed as a complement — not a replacement — to conserving larger natural areas.
12. What happens to the invasive mosquitoes in areas with more trees?
A. Their population is decreased.
B. They spread diseases faster.
C. They get more food sources.
D. They are adaptable.
13 What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The types of mosquitoes.
B. The findings of the study.
C. The carriers of diseases.
D. The ways to avoid mosquitoes.
14. What can we say about the strategy in paragraph 4?
A. It is a win-win solution.
B. It is an economic strategy.
C. It is still facing many barriers.
D. It is still questioned by experts.
15. What does the underlined word “complement” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Advantage. B. Distribution.
C. Addition. D. Consequence.
Draw what you see, not what you think you see, is probably what you’ve heard a lot if you’re a beginner artist. ____16____ Below are some techniques.
Invert (颠倒) your subject. The idea is that turning the photo upside down lets you observe more closely. We’re so used to seeing the world the right way up that we have preconstructed ideas of what most things look like. Since our brains automatically reuse familiar drawing habits, we often fail to understand the real shapes we’re trying to observe. ____17____
Draw negative space. Another great way to focus on seeing things as they really are and not as we imagine them is to try to draw the negative space. ____18____ The line is the same because the virtual border of an object is the same as the border of its environment.
Draw a plant. Let’s go to the opposite extreme. I mentioned that a challenge with drawing what you see is disturbance from our existing concepts. ____19____ Our basic idea of what a plant looks like is often something at the symbol level. The reality is that plants are much more complex, and certainly aren’t flat. This contrast makes them a good subject to help us break free from our reliance on symbolic expression.
____20____ Writing and drawing are often seen as two distinct ways to represent a scene. However, visual artists can also benefit from writing. That’s because it can encourage slow observation and help us notice the full complexity of a subject. Find an object and describe it in words first. Then draw it slowly from different angles.
A. Describe the scene in words.
B. Use drawing to add power to your words.
C. However, these concepts are not accepted universally.
D. However, it can be harder than it might sound when you do.
E. When an image is upside down, we have to concentrate a lot more.
F. That is the space between the objects, rather than the objects themselves.
G. This is particularly apparent when you consider complex subjects like plants.

One day in September 2016, 7-year-old Vedant Singh, an autistic (孤独症的) boy, found that his school could no longer accommodate his needs. A few days earlier, his speech teacher had also decided that she wasn’t the right person to support him.
Vedant is nonverbal (不能说话的), so he has trouble expressing exactly what’s on his mind, but it was clear to his mother, Tulika Prasad, that Vedant was feeling defeated.
“I could tell that my son was struggling through all of this,” Prasad recalled. “It was one of those difficult times when nothing seemed to work.”
Life had to go on, though. So that afternoon, Prasad and her son went to the grocery store. That’s when Vedant’s bottled-up frustration came to the surface. As they were standing in the checkout line, Vedant began to cry. Then, he grabbed his mother’s hair and wouldn’t let go.
“He was pulling my hair in all directions and I was wincing (畏缩) in pain,” Prasad said. “And I could literally feel all eyes on us, as you would expect in a situation like this.”
Then Prasad’s unsung hero stepped in — the woman ahead of them in line.
“She turned around, looked at me with the gentlest of eyes and asked if I wanted help unloading my cart,” Prasad said.
Prasad nodded, and the woman took everything out of Prasad’s shopping cart and loaded it onto the conveyor belt (传送带).
Eventually, Vedant calmed down and let go of Prasad’s hair. When Prasad pulled out her wallet to pay, the cashier told her that the woman had already covered the bill.
Prasad looked around for the stranger. She saw her standing near the exit, holding the cart. When Prasad tried to pay her back, the woman refused.

6. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph most likely refer to?
A. The cooperative working style.
B. The act of giving orders.
C. The process of sharing ideas.
D. The goal of driving community change.
7. Which words best describe Marilyn Schlossbach?
A. Optimistic and humble.
B. Responsible and humorous.
C. Ambitious and inspiring.
D. Adaptable and straightforward.
C 5. B 6. D 7. C

根据最后一段“‘We can be a power for change in this neighborhood and community,’ she says. ‘That’s the goal I’ve pursued my whole career. I’ve found that cooperation — rather than telling everyone how it will be — works best. This model allows me to achieve that.’

D It should be strictly prohibited by law.
10. What is Robinson’s attitude toward the result of lawsuits?
A. Favorable. B. Concerned.
C. Puzzled. D. Relieved.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI Encounters Doubts from Publishers
B. Works by AI Are Flooding the Internet
C. Worries about AI Works Are Dismissing
D. Authors Protest Publishers’ Use of AI
C 9. C 10. B 11. D

根据第5段中“Young adult fiction author Rioghnach Robinson, who is one of the organizers of the letter, said these rulings make protection measures even more urgent.(青年小说作家、这封信的组织者之一Rioghnach Robinson表示,这些裁决使得保护措施变得更加紧迫)”可知,Robinson对诉讼结果感到担忧,认为保护措施亟待加强。
根据全文内容,特别是第1段中“A group of more than 70 authors released an open letter on Friday about the use of AI on the literary website Lit Hub. It asked publishing houses to promise ‘they will never release books that were created by machines.’(周五,70多名作家在文学网站Lit Hub上发表了一封关于人工智能使用的公开信。公开信要求出版社承诺‘他们永远不会发布由机器创作的书。’)”,以及第2段中“The letter contains a list of direct requests to publishers concerning many ways in which AI may already — or could soon be — used in publishing.(这封信包含了一系列向出版商提出的直接请求,涉及AI可能已经——或即将——在出版中使用的多种方式。)”

13. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The types of mosquitoes.
B. The findings of the study.
C The carriers of diseases.
A 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第二段“Using field observations and satellite data on land cover for a patchwork of forests, farms, and residential areas in southern Costa Rica, the researchers found the presence of the Aedes albopictus mosquito, an invasive mosquito species, decreased in areas with more tree cover while the total number of mosquito species increased. (研究人员借助哥斯达黎加南部森林、农田与居民区交错分布区域的地表覆盖实地观测数据和卫星数据发现,在树木覆盖率更高的区域,白纹伊蚊这一入侵蚊种的种群数量有所减少,而蚊子的物种总数则出现了增长。)”可知,在树木更多的区域,入侵性蚊子的数量会减少。故选A。
根据第三段“Costa Rica has many mosquito-borne diseases and two invasive mosquito species serving as carriers. The forests surveyed in the study hosted a high diversity of mosquito species, none of which were the disease carrier Aedes albopictus. Residential areas, by contrast, had lower overall diversity and were far more likely to attract the invasive, disease-spreading species. Agricultural areas fell somewhere in between, with outcomes seemingly tied to the intensity and type of land use.(哥斯达黎加有许多蚊子传播的疾病和两种入侵蚊子作为载体。该研究调查的森林中有多种蚊子,其中没有一种是白纹伊蚊。相比之下,住宅区的整体多样性较低,更有可能吸引入侵的、传播疾病的物种。农业地区介于两者之间,其结果似乎与土地利用的强度和类型有关。)”可知,该段核心是呈现研究在不同区域的具体发现。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The study’s findings offer a potential strategy: protecting trees can help conserve biodiversity while also reducing the likelihood of disease transmission. (该研究结果提供了一种潜在策略:保护树木既有助于保护生物多样性,又能降低疾病传播的可能性。)”可知,这种策略同时实现了“生物多样性保护”和“疾病防控”两个目标,是双赢的解决方案。故选A。
根据最后一段“Still, researchers point out that planting trees outside of forests should be viewed as a complement — not a replacement — to conserving larger natural areas. (不过,研究人员指出,在森林之外植树应被视为保护大型自然区域的complement,而非替代。)”中“not a replacement(而非替代)”的转折提示,“complement”应与“替代”语义相反,指“补充”。故选C。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
D 17. E 18. F 19. G 20. A

上文“Draw what you see, not what you think you see, is probably what you’ve heard a lot if you’re a beginner artist. (如果你是一名绘画初学者,你可能经常听到这样的建议:描绘你所看到的,而非你认为你所看到的。)”提出了绘画的核心建议,下文“Below are some techniques. (以下是一些技巧。)”引出具体的方法指导。D项“然而,当你实际去做的时候,它可能比听起来要难得多。”承上启下,“it”指代上文“描绘所见而非所想”的建议,通过“however”转折,指出该建议的实践难点,从而自然过渡到下文技巧的介绍,逻辑连贯。故选D。
【17题详解】
上文“Invert (颠倒) your subject. The idea is that turning the photo upside down lets you observe more closely. We’re so used to seeing the world the right way up that we have preconstructed ideas of what most things look like. Since our brains automatically reuse familiar drawing habits, we often fail to understand the real shapes we’re trying to observe.
Another great way to focus on seeing things as they really are and not as we imagine them is to try to draw the negative space. (绘制负空间。另一个帮助你专注于事物本身而非想象中的样子的好方法,是尝试绘制负空间。)”提出了“绘制负空间”的技巧,下文“The line is the same because the virtual border of an object is the same as the border of its environment. (线条是相同的,因为物体的虚拟边界与其所处环境的边界是一致的。)”进一步解释了该技巧的原理。F项“负空间指的是物体之间的空隙,而非物体本身。”承接上文,直接定义了“负空间”的概念,让读者清晰理解该技巧的描绘对象,为下文原理的阐述奠定基础。故选F。
【19题详解】
上文“Draw a plant. Let’s go to the opposite extreme. I mentioned that a challenge with drawing what you see is disturbance from our existing concepts. (画植物。我们来尝试一个相反的极端例子。我之前提到过,描绘所见的一大挑战是受到固有认知的干扰。)”提出画植物的技巧,并呼应前文“固有认知干扰观察”的核心问题,下文“Our basic idea of what a plant looks like is often something at the symbol level. The reality is that plants are much more complex, and certainly aren’t flat. This contrast makes them a good subject to help us break free from our reliance on symbolic expression.
下文“Writing and drawing are often seen as two distinct ways to represent a scene. However, visual artists can also benefit from writing. That’s because it can encourage slow observation and help us notice the full complexity of a subject. Find an object and describe it in words first. Then draw it slowly from different angles. (写作和绘画通常被视为两种不同的场景表现方式。然而,视觉艺术家也能从写作中获益。这是因为写作能促使人们进行细致观察,帮助我们注意到描绘对象的全部复杂性。找一个物体,先用文字描述它,然后从不同角度慢慢绘制。)”详细介绍了“先写后画”的技巧,强调文字描述对细致观察的帮助。A项“用文字描述场景。”作为该段主旨句,精准概括下文核心内容,“describe the scene in words”与下文“describe it in words first”直接呼应,符合段落主旨。故选A。

Eventually Vedant calmed down and let go of Prasad’s hair. When Prasad pulled out her wallet to pay, the cashier told her that the woman had already covered the bill.
Prasad looked around for the stranger. She saw her standing near the exit, holding the cart. When Prasad tried to pay her back, the woman refused.

“Thank you,” Prasad whispered and unexpectedly, a precious friendship began.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then the woman explained that she had similar experience. Her voice softened as she shared how her son, also nonverbal autistic, had faced similar rejections. “Public moments like these...they’re the hardest,” she murmured, her hand briefly touching Prasad’s trembling arm. The woman then offered to walk Prasad back to her car. As they walked through the parking lot, side by side, her quiet presence was more comforting than any words could be. When they got to Prasad’s car, the woman helped unload the bags and put them in the car.
“Thank you,” Prasad whispered and unexpectedly, a precious friendship began. The stranger — who shared her name was “Anya” — smiled, pressing her number into Prasad’s palm. “Call me when days feel heavy. And remember you’re not alone.” Standing there and watching Anya walk away, Prasad was so moved that she didn’t know how to express her gratitude. From this experience, Prasad learned that kindness isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just someone who sees you, understands you, and stands beside you without judgment. And she decided to value the understanding and friendship and pay the kindness forward.
