When Maggie Aderin-Pocock was a very young girl she loved looking up at the stars in the sky, and she loved a British television stop-animation series about mousylooking beings from another planet called The Clangers. It’s debatable as to which inspired her dream of becoming a space scientist more, but one thing is for sure: the passion Maggie had for space sparked a career and helped her overcome her dyslexia (读写困难).
The now celebrated space scientist, mechanical engineer, and science communicator grew up bouncing from one area of the country to another, the child of two Nigerian immigrants who divorced when she was young. Diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of eight, Maggie faced significant challenges in traditional learning environments. Dyslexia often made reading and writing difficult, and she was sometimes looked down upon by classmates. Despite these obstacles, her passion for science and space exploration shone through. Rather than focusing on the limitations dyslexia imposed, Maggie discovered its advantages: her brain was good at visualization and problem-solving, enabling her to think creatively and approach challenges from unique perspectives.
Her journey to success wasn’t easy. After overcoming early academic struggles, she went on to earn degrees in physics and mechanical engineering. Today, she is well-known for her work in space science, including the development of satellites and instruments used to explore the universe. Her contributions to science are widely recognized, and she has become an inspiring role model for young people, particularly those facing learning difficulties.
Her story is a powerful reminder that dyslexia is not a limitation but a different way of processing the world, one that can lead to extraordinary achievements. Maggie Aderin-Pocock’s life and career prove that facing what makes you different can turn challenges into strengths, inspiring others to see the potential in their own unique abilities.
4. What was the main factor that drove Maggie Aderin-Pocock’s career?
A. The stars in the sky. B. The passion for space.
C. The British television series. D. The early academic struggles.
5. What challenge did Maggie face due to her dyslexia?
A. Lack of interest in study. B. Difficulties in visualization.
C. Disrespect from her classmates. D. Limitations in problem-solving.
6. After Maggie overcame her early academic struggles, she _______.
A became a fashion model B. acquired degrees in different fields
C. quit her pursuit of universe exploration D. fought against the development of satellites
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce a scientist’s research. B. To discuss the disadvantages of dyslexia.
C. To stress the importance of space exploration. D. To encourage people to face difficulties bravely.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. D

I’ve always liked designing things. I remember drawing clothes and shoes when I was eight, and I made my first skirt aged nine. Then three years ago, I began making shoes, and I now spend my free time doing that.
I became interested in making shoes when my cousin told me about an online shoe-making course. I immediately asked my mum to book me on a four-day course in London to see if I liked it, and then I did a ten-day course there in the summer holidays.
I love the courses. On the longer one, I made four pairs of shoes! I couldn’t believe it. The teachers were excellent. That’s what was best about the classes. They made us work really hard but they wanted all their students to have fun, too.
I’ve made about 15 pairs of shoes now. At the moment I’m making a pair of trainers (运动鞋) using an old pair of jeans, but I’ve used all kinds of different things before, from old leather handbags to old cotton dresses!
Making shoes has changed my plans for the future. I know now that I want to be a designer, but not a shoe designer. I’ve decided I’ll do home design. I’ve designed lots of shoes and also some clothes, so I’d like to try something new.

Should students make friends on line? Some people say yes. The internet helps make many friends. Chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions, and even get help with their foreign language studies.
Others, however, think students should not. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. Besides, some students get cheated on line.
It is my opinion that students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us.

第二节 读后续写(20分)
51. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An Honest Mistake
Alice double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’s First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool stuff. Plus, Lisa had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. n-i-c-e-l-y. q-u-i-c-k-l-y. h-o-n-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled “honesty” not “honestly”! She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
“I’ll correct and grade these test papers at the break”, said Lisa. Alice hurried into the classroom. She sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then Lisa walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat.
“Congratulations, Alice! You did it!” she announced. The whole class burst into applause! Lisa presented Alice with her prize. Alice grinned(咧嘴笑) as she read the label on the box: To Alice Carter, for her perfect first -quarter score in spelling.
“Is everything OK?” Mom asked as Alice burst through the front door after school. “Everything is perfect!” Alice shouted, showing Mom her spelling test paper and prize. Mom hugged her. “Put the test on the fridge so Dad can see it when he get home. And Casper, too. ” Alice scooped (抱起) up her cat. “Casper, can you spell nicely, quickly and honestly?” Alice’s heart missed a beat suddenly. “Honestly?” H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“Alice, what’s the matter?” said Mom. “I don’t feel so good,” Alice said, putting Casper down and stuffing the test paper into her backpack. “Probably too much excitement.” Mom rubbed her back. “How about some tea?” Alice swallowed, “How did you know? A “t” is exactly what I needed.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Shortly afterwards, Alice dashed into her room and pulled out the test paper. Recalling the joyful moment, a mixture of guilt and unwillingness overwhelmed her, Alice slowly picked up her pen, hesitant. “If I put the missing t back in, no one would ever know.” she thought. The moment the nib touched the paper, her heart began to beat fast, her hand trembling. Straightening her back, Alice took a few deep breaths, tossed the pen on the table and stormed out of the house with her backpack. She raced back to school as fast as her legs could carry her. (87 words)
Paragraph 2:
Alice pushed open the door of Lisa’s office. At the sight of Alice, Lisa asked her what was happening. Alice unzipped her bag, pulled out the prize and handed it to her teacher. Head down, she explained her mistake in spelling competition. For a moment, Lisa stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then she picked up a pen, crossed out the word perfect on the label and wrote honest before handing the prize back to Alice. “I get to keep this? Honestly?” she asked suspiciously, “Not for the spelling mistake you made,”Lisa smiled “But for your honesty.”(92 words)

When Maggie Aderin-Pocock was a very young girl, she loved looking up at the stars in the sky, and she loved a British television stop-animation series about mousylooking beings from another planet called The Clangers.
A. became a fashion model B. acquired degrees in different fields
C. quit her pursuit of universe exploration D. fought against the development of satellites
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce a scientist’s research. B. To discuss the disadvantages of dyslexia.
C. To stress the importance of space exploration. D. To encourage people to face difficulties bravely.

Wait! She’d spelled “honesty”, not “honestly”!
“Congratulations Alice!
