Like most writers, when it comes to the written word, I feel like I can express myself exactly how I want and arrange words on paper with a great sense of control. However, my speaking voice is less confident than my written one, and I often feel shaky and tongue-tied when I’m in a new place and need to ask for directions.
I never recognized this as a problem until I traveled to Mexico City. For months, I’d been studying Spanish on Duolingo and was excited to practice what I’d learned. But when I started interacting with the locals, I struggled with my words and second-guessed everything I knew. At a café, I froze when I went to order: “Podría tener un café y un…” I began but forgot the word for a “glass” of water, then my embarrassment levels went through the roof.
Once home, I stepped up my Spanish learning, but my confidence continued to be easily knocked by minor mistakes. As the last effort, I signed up for private session with a tutor, Julieta. Her warm, down-to-earth manner put me at ease. “Excelente,” she praised throughout the lesson. She insisted that I speak exclusively in Spanish, so I had to make do with my very limited vocabulary and force myself to keep going, even when I made a mistake. Julieta would wait patiently while I struggled to find my words. In a strange way, the pressure was off: I reminded myself that Julieta was there to help and guide me, not judge me.
Then earlier this month, I traveled to Argentina for work. With employees who had a harder time with English, my ability to do my job depended on my ability to speak — in Spanish. Something switched on inside me. I made a point of speaking Spanish whenever I interacted with local staff. Chatting with coworkers, I was impressed by how fluently I was speaking, and my determination to carry on even when I felt like quitting.
“Tu español es bueno,” my coworker praised one day. And for the first time, I believed it. I was doing exactly what Julieta had taught me: finding a way to express myself even when the right or most polished words weren’t available to me.
4. When did the author realize that she should work more on her Spanish?
A. When she kept forgetting Spanish words.
B. When she failed a conversation in Mexico.
C. When her colleague spoke Spanish to her.
D. When she was learning Spanish with Julieta.
5. How did Julieta help the author with Spanish learning?
A. By picking out and correcting minor mistakes.
B. By advising her to talk to native speakers regularly.
C. By creating a relaxing but encouraging environment.
D. By checking her mastery of Spanish vocabulary constantly.
6. According to the passage, which of the following is the best way of learning to speak a new language?
A. Speaking out with courage.
B. Always pursuing perfection.
C. Making friends with natives.
D. Finding a good language tutor.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Well begun is half done.
B. Early bird catches the worm.
C Learning is a lifelong process.
D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
C
Using crushed rock dust to speed up the rate at which soils absorb carbon dioxide could also affect the climate by making Earth’s surface reflect more or less of the sun’s radiation.
Enhanced rock weathering (ERW), is rapidly growing around the world. It involves sprinkling (洒) crushed, volcanic rock, such as basalt (玄武岩), onto soils to accelerate the natural weathering process by which CO₂ in the atmosphere is converted to stable minerals.
But if the practice is scaled up to cover large areas of land around the world, it could alter the planet’s reflectivity, or albedo, according to Brad Marston at Brown University in Rhode Island.
Albedo is a measure of how much light something reflects, on a scale from 0 (none) to 1 (all). Whiter areas of the planet like the polar ice caps bounce more sunlight back into space, providing a cooling effect, while darker areas absorb more heat and speed up warming. If the rock dust spread on fields is paler than the existing soil, Earth’s albedo could increase, says Marston, boosting the cooling effect from ERW. However, if the dust is darker than the soil, it could have the opposite effect.
Based on modelling, Marston and his colleague estimate that if 5 million square kilometres of agricultural land were spread with crushed rock, it could remove about 1 gigatonne (十亿吨) of CO₂ per year from the atmosphere. “Increasing albedo by just 0.1 on all agricultural land would result in Earth cooling by roughly 1°C, they estimate.
If ERW had a positive impact on Earth’s albedo, it could provide a double climate benefit, says Marston, offering long-term cooling thanks to the soil’s increased CO₂ absorption and short-term cooling from the albedo change.
But other researchers aren’t convinced ERW could alter planetary albedo. Noah Planavsky at Yale University says most farmers try to minimize the amount of time that soil is exposed. “For most of the year, you have a crop that is totally covering the soil or you have the remains after harvest,” he says. That means Marston and Ibarra may have overestimated the albedo impact of ERW, he says.
8. What is the main purpose of ERW according to the passage?
A. To protect crops from climate change.
B. To change the color of agricultural soils.
C. To speed up soils’ absorption of carbon dioxide.
D. To bring down Earth’s reflectivity and cool the planet.
9. What do we know about albedo from paragraph 4?
A. Paler soils are more likely to help increase albedo.
B. All white surfaces have an albedo value exactly equal to 1.
C. Albedo works best at high altitude areas like mountain tops.
D. Darker soils have higher albedo practical value for rock dust.
10. What can we infer from Noah Planavsky’s words?
A. Farmers often cover the soil for a long time.
B. Farmers make efforts to reduce the ERW influence.
C. ERW may not work as effective as Marston expected.
D. Cover crops might do harm to agricultural production.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. ERW: A Double Benefit for Climate? B. ERW: An Inspiring Application in Agriculture.
C. Rock Dust: A Perfect Material to Capture Carbon? D. Albedo: Best Solution to Reducing Atmospheric CO₂.
D
Just imagine: apples fought with oranges on horseback. Our imaginations are capable of this — and much more. They are responsible for films and novels, as well as buildings and computers. They are incredibly powerful. And yet the imaginings themselves are hard to define.
Enter Adam Zeman, a neurologist whose book, The Shape of Things Unseen: A New Science of the Imagination, is a fine guide to the tricky science of the imagination. Zeman begins by saying that he wants to make this “accessible”; and he certainly pulls that off, but he has to do a lot of complicating in the process.
After all, while we might think of imagination as mostly a visual skill — a sort of “seeing” by “the mind’s eye” — there are instances where we smell something through “the mind’s nose”.
So Zeman takes us on a necessarily twisting path, explaining, complicating and tripping over various fences along the way. For a subject like the imagination, a certain width is to be expected, but his book is admirably wide-ranging. Zeman interviews novelists and astrophysicists He describes paintings and the functioning of synapses This is a book that concerns art almost as much as it concerns science. As Zeman says: “Science uses imagination to show us as far as possible, how things really are; art, just as importantly, to show us how they feel.”
If there is one thread running through the book, it is the notion that “the ‘real’ world is almost as much a product of our creative minds as its countless virtual cousins”. It’s a “predictive brain” that generates and updates mental models to anticipate the world around it.
There is, though, much else to mention, which is the major flaw here. For every explanation of how neural networks (神经网络) operate, there is a brief history of the greenhouse effect. For every detailed case study, there are short Wikipedia-ish passages. I would have preferred Zeman to expand on his thinking across two or three chapters, which is both a criticism and a compliment — if you can imagine such a thing.
12. What does Adam Zeman aim to achieve with his book?
A. To reveal the “predictive brain” is the key to imagination.
B. To explain how complicated the imagination is in science.
C. To help people easily grasp the science behind imagination.
D. To prove imagination is more important for art than science.
13. How does Zeman develop the subject of his book?
A. By listing the flaws of previous studies on imagination.
B. By comparing different types of imagination in daily life.
C. By sharing personal stories about his research on the brain.
D. By including conversations and discussions of art and science.
14. What does the underlined word “thread” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. A main theme.
B. A type of cloth.
C. A difficult problem.
D. A personal experience.
15. What do we know about the author’s comment on Zeman’s book?
A. The book’s wide range deserves praise.
B. The book could explore certain topics more deeply.
C. The admirable width of the book is a highlight of the book.
D. The Wikipedia-ish explanations should include more details.
Whether you are a couch potato or fitness enthusiast, the start of a new year is a great time to set an exercise goal. ____16____ A study of more than 1000 people found that only about half of them sustained resolutions for a year. I, for one, have tried and failed for years to tick running a half-marathon off my bucket list. If we want this year to be different, how to set yourself up for success?
Well, to start, you may need to re-evaluate your resolution. Most guidance suggests establishing physical activity goals. The ones focused on achieving a certain outcome. These can include aims like walking 10,000 steps a day, or, in my case, running a half-marathon. ____17____
That’s why Christian Swann at Southern Cross University in Australia suggests that those new to working out should choose learning goals rather than performance ones. _____18_____ So, instead of aiming to walk 10,000 steps a day, you would find three new walking routes to enjoy.
____19____ A 2021 study monitored 250 people new to exercise. After one year, only about 17 per cent worked out at least twice a week. Three factors significantly increased their likelihood of doing so. The first was enjoyment. People who found exercise fulfilling or pleasurable were 84 per cent more likely to work out regularly than those who didn’t. Try different types of workouts until you find one that you look forward to. ____20____Participants who firmly believed they would still exercise even when tired, working late or going through a stressful life event were 73 per cent more likely to regularly attend the gym. Making exercise a priority is crucial.
In summary, setting yourself up for successful fitness resolutions means choosing the right goal for you, making exercise fun and devising a plan to stick with it.
A. Commitment was also key.
B. Sports safety came the second.
C. The challenge, of course, is getting it through.
D. There are other things to consider when creating a fitness goal.
E. What should be emphasized more is to accomplish a specific result.
F. However outcome-based goals may actually hold back fitness ambitions.
G. The focus is on developing strategies involved in performing a certain task.

“Windy, windy weather, we all blow together!” Hannah ran along the road, laughing with her five-year-old girl, Daisy. However, today she was filled with money worries. Hannah couldn’t bear to think of her little girl being mocked (嘲笑) for a cheap birthday party. She and Dean, her husband, had outdoor games planned for the party, but only if the weather was fine. If the storm was still there, the party would be a disaster.
Suddenly, Daisy exclaimed excitedly, “Look, Mum! The Parsons’ trampoline (蹦床) is still there!”A “For Sale” sign stood outside the neighbor’s house. Daisy had been fascinated by the trampoline. “Don’t worry. It will probably be there before the Parsons move away,” said Hannah. The wind lifted the safety nettings out of the trampoline and sent them dancing through the air.
“Mrs. Parsons, your trampoline is flying away!” Daisy called out. “Thank you for telling us, Daisy!” Julie Parsons called back. The couple tried to put down a piece of tarpaulin(防水帆布) onto the trampoline. Hannah was already reaching for the tarpaulin. “Daisy, come to help!” she called as she helped the couple.
Mr. Parsons tied down the tarpaulin while Julie told Hannah that no buyers had come for the trampoline. But that’s nothing compared to your problems.“ Julie dropped her voice. ”Has her father found a job?“ Hannah shook her head. ”We’ve been very grateful for his help with our move.“ Julie said.”The situation must be very difficult for you.“
”I’m going to be six tomorrow!“ Daisy piped up.
Hannah’s heart sank. Oh, please don’t ask what present she’s getting, she wished desperately.
”And I’m getting a trampoline, Mrs. Parsons! I asked Santa to bring me one for Christmas, but he told Daddy it was too big to fit on the sleigh (雪橇)!“ the little girl said excitedly, but Hannah’s bad dreams seemed to be brought to life.
That night, it rained heavily. ”Can I still have the outdoor party tomorrow?“ Daisy asked. ”The sun will have dried out the grass, and you’ll have a great party,“ Dean assured the girl.

C. Learning is a lifelong process.
D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
B 5. C 6. A 7. D

根据第二段“I never recognized this as a probleOnce home until I traveled to Mexico City.(直到去墨西哥城旅行,我才意识到这是个问题)”根据第三段“Once home, I stepped up my Spanish learning, but my confidence continued to be easily knocked by minor mistakes.(一回到家,我就加紧了西班牙语的学习,但我的自信心还是会因为一些小失误而轻易受挫)”根据第四段“Then earlier this month, I traveled to Argentina for work.(就在本月初,我因工作前往阿根廷出差)”以及最后一段““Tu español es bueno,” my coworker praised one day.(“你的西班牙语说得真好。” 有一天,我的同事这样称赞道)”可知,作者从墨西哥之行的口语窘迫,到通过针对性学习和阿根廷工作中的刻意练习,最终获得同事认可,体现了“有志者事竟成”的道理。故选D项。
C 9. A 10. C 11. A

根据第二段“Enhanced rock weathering (ERW), is rapidly growing around the world. It involves sprinkling crushed, volcanic rock, such as basalt, onto soils to accelerate the natural weathering process by which CO₂ in the atmosphere is converted to stable minerals.(增强型岩石风化(ERW)在全球范围内正迅速兴起。这种技术包括将破碎的火山岩(如玄武岩)撒在土壤上,以加速大气中二氧化碳转化为稳定矿物质的自然风化过程)”可知,ERW的核心目的是加速土壤对二氧化碳的吸收与转化,故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“If the rock dust spread on fields is paler than the existing soil, Earth’s albedo could increase, says Marston, boosting the cooling effect from ERW.(马斯顿表示,如果在田地表面撒上的岩尘颜色比现有土壤颜色浅,那么地球的反照率就会提高,从而增强地表反射辐射冷却效应的效果)”可知,颜色更浅的土壤或岩尘更易提升反照率,故选A。
根据最后一段““For most of the year, you have a crop that is totally covering the soil or you have the remains after harvest,” he says. That means Marston and Ibarra may have overestimated the albedo impact of ERW, he says.(他说:“在一年中的大部分时间里,要么是农作物完全覆盖着土壤,要么就是收割后的残余物。”这意味着马斯顿和伊巴拉可能高估了ERW对反射率的影响了。)”可知,他认为Marston团队高估了ERW对反照率的影响,即ERW效果可能不如预期,故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Using crushed rock dust to speed up the rate at which soils absorb carbon dioxide could also affect the climate by making Earth’s surface reflect more or less of the sun’s radiation.(利用碎石粉尘来加快土壤吸收二氧化碳的速度,还可能通过改变地球表面对太阳辐射的反射程度来影响气候)”结合文章主要说明了ERW技术可加速土壤固碳,还可能通过改变地表反照率带来双重降温效益,但有研究者质疑其对反照率的实际影响。 故选A。
D A personal experience.
15. What do we know about the author’s comment on Zeman’s book?
A. The book’s wide range deserves praise.
B. The book could explore certain topics more deeply.
C. The admirable width of the book is a highlight of the book.
D. The Wikipedia-ish explanations should include more details.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第二段中“Enter Adam Zeman, a neurologist whose book, The Shape of Things Unseen: A New Science of the Imagination, is a fine guide to the tricky science of the imagination. Zeman begins by saying that he wants to make this “accessible”; and he certainly pulls that off, but he has to do a lot of complicating in the process. (神经学家Adam Zeman的著作《看不见的事物的形状:一门关于想象的新科学》对想象这门棘手的科学提供了很好的指导。Zeman一开始就说,他想让这个“容易理解”;他确实做到了,但在这个过程中他必须做很多复杂的事情)”可知,Zeman在这本书中的目标是帮助人们轻松掌握想象背后的科学。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Zeman interviews novelists and astrophysicists (天体物理学家). He describes paintings and the functioning of synapses (神经元的突触). This is a book that concerns art almost as much as it concerns science. (Zeman采访小说家和天体物理学家。他描述了绘画和神经突触的功能。这是一本涉及科学和艺术的书。)”可知,Zeman通过囊括对艺术和科学的对话和讨论来展开主题。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的下文“it is the notion that “the ‘real’ world is almost as much a product of our creative minds as its countless virtual cousins” (它是这样一种观念:“‘真实’世界几乎和无数虚拟世界一样,都是我们创造性思维的产物”)”可知,一个核心观念贯穿全书,划线词的意思应该是“思路,贯穿的主线”,即书中的核心主题。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“For every explanation of how neural networks (神经网络) operate, there is a brief history of the greenhouse effect. For every detailed case study, there are short Wikipedia-ish passages. I would have preferred Zeman to expand on his thinking across two or three chapters (对于神经网络如何运作的每一种解释,都有一个关于温室效应的简史。对于每一个详细的案例研究,都有类似维基百科的简短段落。我更希望Zeman用两到三章来详述他的想法)”可知,作者肯定Zeman的书的广度,但也指出深度不足,表明这本书可以更深入地探讨某些主题。故选B项。

F. However, outcome-based goals may actually hold back fitness ambitions.
G. The focus is on developing strategies involved in performing a certain task.
C 17. F 18. G 19. D 20. A

根据上文“Whether you are a couch potato or fitness enthusiast, the start of a new year is a great time to set an exercise goal.(无论你是喜欢窝在沙发上看电视的人,还是热衷于健身的人,新年伊始都是设定健身目标的绝佳时机)”以及后文“A study of more than 1000 people found that only about half of them sustained resolutions for a year. I, for one, have tried and failed for years to tick running a half-marathon off my bucket list. If we want this year to be different, how to set yourself up for success?(一项针对 1000 多人的研究发现,只有约半数人能将新年决心坚持一整年。
根据上文“Well, to start, you may need to re-evaluate your resolution. Most guidance suggests establishing physical activity goals. The ones focused on achieving a certain outcome. These can include aims like walking 10,000 steps a day, or, in my case, running a half-marathon.(首先,你可能需要重新审视自己的目标设定。
根据上文“That’s why Christian Swann at Southern Cross University in Australia suggests that those new to working out should choose learning goals rather than performance ones.(这就是为什么澳大利亚南十字星大学的克里斯蒂安·斯旺建议,对于刚开始锻炼的人而言,应当设定学习目标而非成绩目标)”可知,前文提出新手应选学习型目标,空格处需对学习型目标进行具体解释。

The next morning, Daisy roared into the bedroom, ”The trampoline! It’s in the garden!“

“And there’s an envelope tied to the safety netting! With my name!” she shouted. Daisy dashed across the lawn. She stood on tiptoes, grabbed the envelope, and tore it open in a hurry. Dean’s disguised handwriting danced across the page, and she read it aloud, her voice brimming with delight: Dear Daisy, I’m sorry I couldn’t fit your trampoline on my sleigh at Christmas. I got the storm to deliver it for me, in time for your birthday party. Have fun! Lots of love, Father Christmas.“ Hannah turned to Dean in surprise. ”How…“Mr. Parsons insisted on giving it to us, as thanks for all the help,” Dean smiled. “We set it up last night after the rain stopped.”
When the little guests of the party came in, they were all thrilled by the trampoline. Cheers erupted as they spotted it, and soon they were taking turns jumping high, their laughter echoing under the clear blue sky. Daisy, wearing a pink birthday crown, bounced the highest, waving the Santa note to her friends every now and then. Hannah watched the children’s joyful faces, her worries turning into the sweetest birthday surprise. Suddenly, she saw the Parsons walking over with a birthday cake. “We couldn’t miss Daisy’s special day,” Julie said. At that moment, Hannah felt the warmest gift wasn’t the trampoline, but the kindness surrounding their little family.
