【答案】12.B 13.B 14.C 15.C
Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on a two-penny stamp has made it worth a million and a half times its face value.
The mistake was made more than 100 years ago in the former British colony Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847, an order for stamps was sent to London. Mauritius was about to become the fourth country in the world to put out stamps. Before the order was filled and the stamps arrived from England, a big dance was planned by the commander-in-chief of all the armed forces on the island. The dance would be held in his house, and letters of invitation would be sent to all the important people in Mauritius. Stamps were badly needed to post the letters. Therefore, an islander who was a good printer was told to copy the pattern of the stamps. He carelessly put the words "Post Office" instead of "Post Paid" — two words seen on the stamps at the time — on the several hundred stamps that he printed.
Today, there are only 26 of these misprinted stamps left: 14 One Penny Reds, and 12 Two Penny Blues. Because there are so few Two Penny Blues, and because of their age, collectors have paid as much as $16,800 for one of them.

Unless除非。“employment and income are tied to eliminating unhappiness”表示“就业和收入与消除不快乐联系在一起”,侧重就业和收入的重要作用,“the element that makes work satisfactory and meaningful is the service to others”表示“让工作令人满意和有意义的因素是对他人的服务”,侧重对他人服务的重要作用,前后是让步的关系,因此应用While“虽然”引导让步状语从句。故选A。

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be 31 when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago I 32 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 33 by things. People were always doing things that annoyed her, and 34 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 35 person.
Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 36 . Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 37 to deal with was that the day before the 38 , Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her 39 of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she needed to 40 . It wasn’t until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 41 her habit of finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 42 everything so harshly(刻薄). She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 43 as well.
Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme at fault-finding, 44 when we’re honest, we can be sharply 45 of the world. I’m not suggesting you 46 problems, or that you pretend things are 47 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are — 48 most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big 49 .
Train yourself to "bite your tongue", and with a little 50 , you’ll get really good at letting things go. And when you do, you’ll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.

Internet is a great invention for us, and there are many wonders of the web.
Google Works Miracles
COOGIE (www.google.com) is a daily miracle to millions of people. If the Internet had only this very fast search engine, it would have justified its existence many times over. It is the most popular search on the web with a 54% market share, ahead of Yahoo! You type almost anything, however unclear, into the space provided and in a second it has come up with hundreds of references. If knowledge is power, then Google commands the gateway.
Yahoo Becomes Giant
YAHOO (www.yahoo.com) was the first wonder of the web, and in many respects, it still is. It started in January 1994 when we California graduate students, Jerry Yang and David Filo, started compiling (编译) a database of links, mainly for their personal use. But well before the end of the year, it had become recognizable as Yahoo we know today. In the past seven years, Yahoo has grown rapidly, partly through a long string of buys. Yahoo offers almost everything you could want: emails, instant messages, chats, clubs, photo albums, and a lot more.
eBay Enables Everyone to Buy and Sell

The company’s online service permits sellers to list items for sale, buyers to bid on items of interest, and eBay users to browse through listed items that is available online seven days a week.
Amazon Makes Buying a New Experience
Amazon (www.amazon.com) started out as an online bookstore, constantly putting up new book titles it offered for sale. In the late 1990s. Amazon had more than four million titles after adding CDs, videos, DVDs and games. It continued to add new lines of business including toys, computer software, electronics, like power tools, home improvement products and online sales. For regular users, Amazon has made itself the shortest possible path between wanting and buying.

B
In a town near the Potomac River, George and Anne Allen, both 82, struggle to remain in their beloved three-story house and neighborhood. Mr. Allen has had trouble walking since he broke his backbone in a fall down the stairs, and he expects to lose his driver’s license when it comes up for renewal given his physical state. Mrs. Allen recently got her foot hurt getting out of bed. Neither can climb up to change the light or bend under the sink to fix a leak. Without outside help, stores and public locations mean unimaginable hikes to them.
So the Allens have banded together with their neighbors, who are equally determined to avoid being forced from their homes by dependence. Along with more than 100 communities nationwide, their group is part of a movement to make neighborhoods comfortable places to grow old in.
“We are totally dependent on ourselves,” Mr. Allen said. “But I want to live in a mixed community, not just with the elderly. And as long as we can do it here, that’s what we want.”
Their group has been registered as a nonprofit corporation, is setting membership dues, and is lining up providers of transportation, home repair, companionship, security and other services to meet their needs at home for as long as possible.
Urban planners say this movement, organized by residents instead of government agencies, could make “aging in place” safe and affordable for a majority of elderly people. Although not the cure- all for those with complicated medical needs, the approach addresses what experts say can be a premature decision by older people to give up their homes in response to relatively small problems. As these small problems mount, sometimes accompanied by pressure from adult children, the elderly homeowner is caught off guard. Remaining at home without sufficient help is frightening. “If people don’t feel so overpowered, they don’t have to jump at precipitous decisions. Actually practices like moving into nursing homes are hard to be reversed,” said an expert.
For inspiration, “aging in place” groups now pay yearly dues — $580 for an individual in exchange for the security of knowing that carpenters, chefs, computer experts or home health helpers are one phone call away.
56.What is NOT mentioned as a problem the Allens meet with?
A.Physical weakness due to the broken bone.
B.Possible loss of driver’s license due to breaking traffic rules.
C.Failure to handle certain fixing tasks due to limited mobility.
D.Difficulty in traveling to public places alone due to physical condition.
57.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.People like Allens gather to live in a special place for shared elderly caring.
B.The government arranges necessary services for people like Allens.
C.Senior people give up “aging in place” life mainly out of pressure from children.
D.“Aging in place” people pay to have necessary service staff on call.
58.The underlined word precipitous in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.
A.alternative B.fake C.rushed D.Joint
59. What can we learn about Mr. Allen from the passage?
A. He lost his driver’s license because supported backbone.
B. He is eager to live in a community composed of elders only.
C. He broke his backbone due to a fall down the stairs.
D. He can climb up to change the light but can't bend under the sink.
60.Which of the following is probably the title of the passage?
A.US grey band fights to stay at home
B.Attention, US seniors are suffering
C.At home vs Nursing home-a hard choice for US seniors
D.US adult children, it’s time to care for your parents
【答案】56.B 57.D 58.C 59.C 60.A
根据文章第一段“In a town near the Potomac River, George and Anne Allen, both 82, struggle to remain in their beloved three-story house and neighborhood. Without outside help, stores and public locations mean unimaginable hikes to them.(在波托马克河附近的一个小镇上,82岁的George和Anne Allen夫妇正努力留在他们心爱的三层楼房和社区里。 B“Possible loss of driver’s license due to breaking traffic rules.(因违反交通规则而可能失去驾照)”并未提及。故选B。
根据文章最后一段“For inspiration, “aging in place” groups now pay yearly dues — $580 for an individual in exchange for the security of knowing that carpenters, chefs, computer experts or home health helpers are one phone call away.(为了获得启发,“就地养老”团体现在每年支付会费——个人580美元,以此换取安全保障,知道木匠、厨师、计算机专家或家庭健康助手只需一个电话就能随叫随到)”可知,“就地养老”团体现在每年支付会费,以确保知道木匠、厨师、计算机专家或家庭健康助手只需一个电话就能随叫随到。故选D。
根据划线单词上文“Although not the cure — all for those with complicated medical needs, the approach addresses what experts say can be a premature decision by older people to give up their homes in response to relatively small problems. As these small problems mount, sometimes accompanied by pressure from adult children, the elderly homeowner is caught off guard. Remaining at home without sufficient help is frightening. (虽然这种方法并不能解决所有复杂医疗需求的问题,但它解决了专家所说的老年人因相对较小的问题而草率放弃家园的过早决定。随着这些小问题的不断累积,有时再加上成年子女的压力,老年房主会感到措手不及。没有足够的帮助而留在家里是令人害怕的)”可推测,如果遇到很多问题,老人会仓促作出决定。再根据所在句““If people don’t feel so overpowered, they don’t have to jump at precipitous decisions. Actually practices like moving into nursing homes are hard to be reversed,” said an expert.(“如果人们不感到那么无助,他们就不必______ 做出决定。实际上,像搬进养老院这样的做法是很难逆转的,”一位专家说)”可推测,划线单词和“仓促间”意思相符。选项C“rushed(匆忙)”与此意义相近。故选C。
Mr. Allen has had trouble walking since he broke his backbone in a fall down the stairs。
根据第二段“So the Allens have banded together with their neighbors, who are equally determined to avoid being forced from their homes by dependence. Along with more than 100 communities nationwide, their group is part of a movement to make neighborhoods comfortable places to grow old in.(因此,Allen夫妇与他们的邻居们团结起来,邻居们也同样决心避免因为依赖他人而被迫离开自己的家。与全国100多个社区一样,他们的团体也是致力于让社区成为老年人舒适生活的地方的运动的一部分)”以及第四段“Their group has been registered as a nonprofit corporation, is setting membership dues, and is lining up providers of transportation, home repair, companionship, security and other services to meet their needs at home for as long as possible. (他们的团体已经注册为非营利性公司,正在设定会员费,并正在组织交通、房屋维修、陪伴、安全和其他服务的提供者,以满足他们在家里尽可能长时间生活的需求。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要描述了美国老年人为了能在自己家中养老,即“就地养老”(aging in place),所做的努力和斗争。他们通过自发组织,确保自己能在熟悉的社区环境中养老,而无需被迫搬离到养老院或其他护理机构。选项A“US grey band fights to stay at home”直接反映了文章的主旨,即美国老年人为了能在自己家中养老所做的斗争。 故选A。
C
As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being.
The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to waves.”
Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
“We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study.
61.What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text?
A.Pocket parks are now popular. B.Wild nature is hard to find in cities.
C.Many cities are overpopulated. D.People enjoy living close to nature.
62.Why did the researchers code participant submissions into categories?
A.To compare different types of park-goers. B.To explain why the park attracts tourists.
C.To analyze the main features of the park. D.To find patterns in the visitors’ summaries.
63.What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 5?
A.Walking is the best way to gain access to nature.
B.Young people are too busy to interact with nature.
C.The same nature experience takes different forms.
D.The nature language enhances work performance.
64.What should be done before we can interact with nature according to Kahn?
A.Language study. B.Environmental conservation.
C.Public education. D.Intercultural communication.
65.What is the main purpose of the study mentioned in the text?
A. To introduce a new way of managing urban parks
B. To create a “nature language” to promote human-nature interactions
C. To prove that pocket parks are better than wild natural areas
D. To encourage young professionals to hike in urban parks on weekends
根据第一段内容“As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.(随着城市的飞速发展,生活在城市地区的人们越来越难以接近大自然。如果你幸运的话,你住的地方附近可能会有一个袖珍公园,但在城市里找到相对天然的地方是罕见的)”可知,文章开头作者讲述了一种现象,在城市里,人们很难找到野生的自然。故选B。
62.推理判断题。根据第三段的“They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. (他们调查了数百名公园游客,要求他们在网上提交一份书面总结,描述他们在公园里与大自然有意义的互动。然后,研究人员检查了这些提交的信息,将体验分为不同的类别)”可知,研究人员按照公园游客提交的在公园里与大自然互动的活动把游客分类,再根据第四段“Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. (在这320份提交的作品中,一种被研究人员称为“自然语言”的分类模式开始出现。在对所有提交的内容进行编码后,有六个类别被认为对游客最重要)”可知,研究人员对参与者提交的内容进行了分类,以便在游客的总结中找到模式,并确定对游客最重要的自然体验。通过这样做,他们能够创造一种“自然语言”,帮助人们认识并参与对他们来说最满意和最有意义的活动。选项D准确地反映了这一目的。故选D。
63.推理判断题。根据第五段内容“Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
根据最后一段““We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study. (“我们正试图创造一种语言,帮助将人类与自然的互动带回我们的日常生活中。要做到这一点,我们还需要保护自然,这样我们才能与它互动,”该研究的资深作者彼得·卡恩说。)”可推断,彼得·卡恩认为在我们与大自然互动之前我们应该先要保护自然。故选B。
65. 主旨大意题。结合全文,研究人员通过编码游客的自然体验总结出“nature language”,且最后一段Kahn表明研究目的是“generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives”,A“管理城市公园”、C“对比口袋公园与野生区域”、D“鼓励年轻人徒步”均非研究的核心目的。故选B。
D
Paris is full of cultural significance. Yet, despite its wealth of cultural hotspots and architectural delights, some tourists who explore the City of Light experience “Paris syndrome (巴黎综合征), a psychological condition that often results in nausea (恶心) and increased heart rates. An interesting phenomenon is that Paris syndrome is “most common among Japanese tourists”. Why?
Many Japanese visitors go with a deeply romantic picture of Paris----the beauty of French women, the high culture and art. But when the reality of the modern city of Paris sets in, with its seemingly unfriendly service and confusing public transport, some tourists simply find their hope falling through.
“An encounter with a Parisian waiter who shouts at customers might be laughed off by those from other Western cultures. But for the Japanese —used to a society where politeness is valued and voices are rarely raised in anger-----the experience of their dream city turning into a nightmare (噩梦) can simply be too much,” said Rodanthi Tzanelli, a professor of cultural sociology.
So Paris syndrome should be regarded as an extreme form of culture shock, which is an illness resulting from the loss of meaning when people find themselves in a different symbolic reality, according to Rachel Irwin, a senior researcher. The symptoms (症状) associated with culture shock are similar to those experienced by someone who is feeling anxious. According to the analysis (分析) of Calm Clinic, a mental health resource platform, when someone is experiencing anxiety, signals that are related to the fight or flight response will be sent to the stomach. The signals change the way the body processes food, causing nausea.
Besides, Tzanelli points out that the syndrome is not specific to Paris and nobody can be free of culture shock as long as they go to new places. The syndrome is likely a “general phenomenon”, as younger generations tend to travel to different countries, and are likely to be more aware of what they’ll encounter at a destination. Therefore, they’re unlikely to be bitterly disappointed when they’re there.
66.Why do Japanese tourists experience great discomfort in Paris?
A.Paris lacks real historical and cultural hotspots.
B.Paris fails to meet their romantic expectations.
C.They find Paris’ public transport less modern.
D.They cannot adapt to the local climate.
67.What does Rodanthi Tzanelli aim to explain in paragraph 3?
A.How culture influences the behavior of tourists.
B.How Japanese tourists react to Paris syndrome.
C.Why Paris syndrome particularly strikes the Japanese.
D.Why the Japanese value politeness and avoid conflicts.
68. What conclusion about culture shock can be drawn from Rachel Irwin’s words?
A. It can be seen everywhere.
B. It leads to people’s mental illness.
C. It damages people’s sense of self-identity.
D. It’s due to conflicts between different cultural contexts.
69.What does Calm Clinic’s analysis stress?
A.People’s inability to adapt to new cultures.
B.The methods of overcoming culture shock.
C.People’s varied attitudes to different cultures.
D.The physical discomfort caused by culture shock.
70.What will be the author’s advice on overcoming Paris syndrome?
A.To be prepared for new encounters in advance.
B.To focus on the positive aspects of a destination.
C.To visit new places together with young people.
D.To avoid going to unfamiliar destinations.
66.B 67.C 68. A 69.D 70.A
根据第二段“Many Japanese visitors go with a deeply romantic picture of Paris----the beauty of French women, the high culture and art. But when the reality of the modern city of Paris sets in, with its seemingly unfriendly service and confusing public transport, some tourists simply find their hope falling through.(许多日本游客带着深深的浪漫画面去巴黎----法国女人的美丽、高雅的文化和艺术。但是,当巴黎这座现代城市的现实出现时,它看似不友好的服务和令人困惑的公共交通,一些游客只是发现他们的希望破灭了。)”可知,日本游客在巴黎会感到非常不舒服是因为巴黎没能满足他们的浪漫期望。故选B。
67.推理判断题。根据第三段“But for the Japanese —used to a society where politeness is valued and voices are rarely raised in anger-----the experience of their dream city turning into a nightmare (噩梦) can simply be too much(但对于日本人来说——他们已经习惯了一个重视礼貌、很少发出愤怒声音的社会——他们梦想中的城市变成了噩梦的经历实在是太过分了)”可知,Rodanthi Tzanelli在第三段中想要解释巴黎综合症为什么会引起日本人的强烈反应。故选C。
Rachel Irwin 提出文化冲击是“the loss of meaning brought about when people find themselves immersed in a different symbolic reality”,即人们身处异质的符号环境时,因原有认知意义的缺失而产生的不适。 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“The symptoms (症状) associated with culture shock are similar to those experienced by someone who is feeling anxious. According to the analysis (分析) of Calm Clinic, a mental health resource platform, when someone is experiencing anxiety, signals that are related to the fight or flight response will be sent to the stomach. The signals change the way the body processes food, causing nausea.(与文化冲击相关的症状与感到焦虑的人所经历的症状相似。根据心理健康资源平台Calm Clinic的分析,当一个人感到焦虑时,与战斗或逃跑反应相关的信号会被发送到胃里。这些信号改变了身体处理食物的方式,导致恶心。)”可知,Calm Clinic的分析强调了文化冲击引起的身体不适。故选D。
70.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The syndrome is likely a “general phenomenon”, as younger generations tend to travel to different countries, and are likely to be more aware of what they’ll encounter at a destination. Therefore, they’re unlikely to be bitterly disappointed when they’re there.(这种综合症可能是一种“普遍现象”,因为年轻一代倾向于去不同的国家旅行,并且可能更清楚他们在目的地会遇到什么。因此,当他们在那里时,他们不太可能感到非常失望。)”可知,作者的建议是提前为新的遭遇做好准备。故选A。

Gloria Scott decided it was time to call an electrician in early August after she turned on a light switch in her kitchen and suddenly a flash of light flew overhead. Obviously, the lights need repairing.
Electrician John Kinney fixed the problem and got her lights working again. But when he returned to his own home that weekend, he couldn’t stop thinking about Scott, 72, living with her dog in her shabby house in Woburn, Mass.
“She reminded me of my grandma, who passed away 10 years ago,” said Kinney, 37, who runs Kinney Electric. “Her wiring was in bad shape and I really worried about her safety.”
The following Monday, Kinney returned to Scott’s home with an extra offer. While organizing things inside her house, he noticed that she had no hot water coming out of her faucets(水龙头). He also discovered that her kitchen sink was broken and the ceilings were full of holes...
It was then that Kinney decided to start a Facebook page called “A Nice Old Lady Needs Help” and raise funds to do all of the repairs. To his surprise, it went viral. In less than a month, nearly $115, 000 was raised and the campaign now has a new name: “Gloria’s Gladiators.”
“We were hoping to inspire others and that’s exactly what is happening,” said Kinney, noting that the Gloria’s Gladiators group now has more than 15, 000 members—many of whom were inspired by Scott’s story to begin doing free home repairs in their own neighborhoods.
Scott felt so thankful for Kinney and other volunteers’ help that she was speechless.
Kinney said he’s thankful for the opportunity to repair Scott’s home, and there is something else that has also brought him joy.
“We’ve opened up Gloria’s world,” he said. “Now, I hope we can do the same for all of the other Glorias out there. Nobody should have to go through life alone. ”

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be 31 when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago, I 32 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 33 by things.

COOGLE(www.google.com) is a daily miracle to millions of people. If the Internet had only this very fast search engine, it would have justified its existence many times over. It is the most popular search engine on the web with a 54% market share, ahead of Yahoo! You type almost anything, however unclear, into the space provided and in a second it has come up with hundreds of references. If knowledge is power, then Google commands the gateway.
Yahoo Becomes a Giant
YAHOO(www.yahoo.com) was the first wonder of the web, and in many respects, it still is. It started in January 1994 when we California graduate students, Jerry Yang and David Filo, started compiling(编译) a database of links, mainly for their personal use. But well before the end of the year, it had become recognisable as Yahoo we know today. In the past seven years, Yahoo has grown rapidly, partly through a long string of buys. Yahoo offers almost everything you could want: emails, instant messages, chats, clubs, photo albums, and a lot more.
eBay Enables Everyone to Buy and Sell
eBay(www.ebay.com), which deals with online trading and shopping services, is the most impressive large Internet company where people buy and sell goods and services worldwide. It has, for instance, opened a global marketplace in which people from Beijing, San Francisco, or Moscow can bid against each other for products put up for sale by someone in London. The company's online service permits sellers to list items for sale, buyers to bid on items of interest, and eBay users to browse through listed items that is available online seven days a week.
Amazon Makes Buying a New Experience
Amazon(www.amazon.com) started out as an online bookstore, constantly putting up new book titles it offered for sale. In the late 1990s, Amazon had more than four million titles after adding CDs, videos, DVDs and games. It continued to add new lines of business including toys, computer software, electronics, like power tools, home improvement products and online sales. For regular users, Amazon has made itself the shortest possible path between wanting and buying.

In a town near the Potomac River,George and Anne Allen, both 82,struggle to remain in their
beloved three-story house and neighborhood.Mr.Allen has had trouble walking since he broke his
backbone in a fall down the stairs, and he expects to lose his driver's license when it comes up for
renewal given his physical state.Mrs.Allen recently got her foot hurt getting out of bed.Neither can
climb up to change the light or bend under the sink to fix a leak.Without outside help, stores and
public locations mean unimaginable hikes to them
So the Allens have banded together with their neighbors, who are equally determined to avoid
being forced from their homes by dependence.Along with more than 100 communities nationwide,
their group is part of a movement to make neighborhoods comfortable places to grow old in
"We are totally dependent on ourselves,"Mr.Allen said."But I want to live in a mixed
community, not just with the elderly. And as long as we can do it here, that's what we want."
Their group has been registered as a nonprofit corporation,is setting membership dues, and is
lining up providers of transportation, home repair, companionship, security and other services to
meet their needs at home for as long as possible.
Urban planners say this movement, organized by residents instead of government agencies,
could make "aging in place"safe and affordable for a majority of elderly people.Although not the
cure-all for those with complicated medical needs, the approach addresses what experts say can be
a premature decision by older people to give up their homes in response to relatively small problems.
As these small problems mount, sometimes accompanied by pressure from adult children, the
elderly homeowner is caught off guard.Remaining at home without sufficient help is frightening.
"If people don't feel so overpowered, they don't have to jump at precipitous decisions.Actually
practices like moving into nursing homes are hard to be reversed,"said an expert.
For inspiration,"aging in place"groups now pay yearly dues-$580 for an individual in

harder to find.If you're lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it's unusual to
find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study
shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being.
The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers,

categories. For example, one participant's experience of "We sat and listened to the waves at the
beach for a while"was assigned the categories"sitting at beach"and "listening to waves."
Across the 320 submissions,a pattern of categories the researchers call a "nature language"
began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often
as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and
following an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and
take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the
experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a
weekend hike in the park.Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form
of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
:
"We're tying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into
our daily lives. And for that to happen,we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it"
said Peter Kahn,a senior author of the study.

Paris is full of cultural significance.Yet,despite its wealth of cultural hotspots and architectural
delights, some tourists who explore the City of Light experience "Paris syndrome(巴黎综合征),a
psychological condition that often results in nausea ()and increased heart rates. An interesting
phenomenon is that Paris syndrome is"most common among Japanese tourists".Why?
Many Japanese visitors go with a deeply romantic picture of Paris----the beauty of French
women, the high culture and art.But when the reality of the modern city of Paris sets in,with its
seemingly unfriendly service and confusing public transport, some tourists simply find their hope
falling through.
"An encounter with a Parisian waiter who shouts at customers might be laughed off by those
from other Western cultures. But for the Japanese-used to a society where politeness is valued and
voices are rarely raised in anger-----the experience of their dream city turning into a nightmare
)can simply be too much,"said Rodanthi Tzanelli,a professor of cultural sociology.
So Paris syndrome should be regarded as an extreme form of culture shock, which is an illness
resulting from the loss of meaning when people find themselves in a different symbolic reality,
according to Rachel Irwin,a senior researcher. The symptoms (associated with culture shock
are similar to those experienced by someone who is feeling anxious.According to the analysis
of Calm Clinic,a mental health resource platform, when someone is experiencing anxiety,
signals that are related to the fight or flight response will be sent to the stomach. The signals change
the way the body processes food, causing nausea.
Besides,Tzanelli points out that the syndrome is not specific to Paris and nobody can be free of
culture shock as long as they go to new places. The syndrome is likely a"general phenomenon",as
younger generations tend to travel to different countries, and are likely to be more aware of what
they'll encounter at a destination. Therefore, they're unlikely to be bitterly disappointed when
they're there.
66.Why do Japanese tourists experience great discomfort in Paris?
A.Paris lacks real historical and cultural hotspots.

B.How Japanese tourists react to Paris syndrome.
C.Why Paris syndrome particularly strikes the Japanese.

68.What conclusion about culture shock can be drawn from Rachel Irwin's words?
A.It can be seen everywhere.
B.It leads to people's mental illness
C.It damages people's sense of self-identity.
D.It's due to conflicts between different cultural contexts.
69.What does Calm Clinic's analysis stress?
A.People's inability to adapt to new cultures.
B.The methods of overcoming culture shock

D.The physical discomfort caused by culture shock.

Gloria Scott decided it was time to call an electrician in early August after she turned on a
light switch in her kitchen and suddenly a flash of light flew overhead.Obviously, the lights need
repairing.

$115,000 was raised and the campaign now has a new name:"Gloria's Gladiators."
"We were hoping to inspire others and that's exactly what is happening,"said Kinney, noting
that the Gloria's Gladiators group now has more than 15,000 members-many of whom were
inspired by Scott's story to begin doing free home repairs in their own neighborhoods.
Scott felt so thankful for Kinney and other volunteers'help that she was speechless.
游
Kinney said he's thankful for the opportunity to repair Scott's home, and there is something
else that has also brought him joy.
"We've opened up Gloria's world,"he said."Now,I hope we can do the same for all of the
other Glorias out there.Nobody should have to go through life alone.

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be 31 when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago, I 32 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 33 by things.
