25 SepNext week I’m travelling to Australia to visit a friend there over the school holidays. I plan to keep this blog to record my experiences and what I learn. I have already done some research on the country. Located to the south of the equator, below many other countries on the globe, it’s often informally referred to as “down under”.
I have also read about some iconic sites, such as the Sydney Opera House and the Great Ocean Road, and animals like the cute koalas and kangaroos. I can’t wait to see all of them! However, as I major in social studies, I’m more interested in meeting people in Australia and experiencing their culture, food, and way of life.
1 OctI’m here in Sydney! Since I arrived, my friend has brought me to my first open-air barbecue and has also shared many different but yummy meals with me, so my first impressions of Australia have been all about food! A lot of typical Australian food, such as the Sunday roast, is originally British. Bakeries, fast-food joints, butcher shops, cafes, and restaurants everywhere provide some of the premier food experiences in the world. The influence of Asian cultures, on the other hand, led to the introduction of bean curd and Asian herbs, along with Australian versions of foods like the Chinese-inspired dim sim.
3 OctMy friend and I have arrived in Katherine, a town in Australia’s Northern Territory. We’re here to learn about the life and customs of the Aborigines, who are native to Australia. The Aboriginal population might be small, but its influence is still visible. For example, “Bondi” in “Bondi Beach” is an Aboriginal word meaning “water breaking over rocks”. To survive in this vast land on the ocean, the Aborigines had to be in close contact with nature. This shows in their music, too, which celebrates the natural world and the spiritual world around them. Most of their musical instruments are really just sticks found on the ground, among which there is an amazing instrument called the didgeridoo.
The didgeridoo is made from a tree branch which is hollow. To play the didgeridoo, you put your mouth on one end and blow while vibrating your lips. Unlike a horn, there are no finger holes. The didgeridoo player has to change the shape of his mouth in order to change pitch. A skilled player can play for a long time without stopping to breathe. He does this by continually breathing in through his nose while breathing out through his mouth and into the didgeridoo. I tried to learn how to play it, but after trying for hours, I was convinced that I could never make a musical sound with this instrument!
6 OctIt’s almost time for me to say goodbye to Australia. I’ve enjoyed my time here very much. After being here for a while, my biggest impression is the complicated mix of peoples and cultures that make up the nation. Although the main cultural influence since 1788 has been Western culture, minority cultures have also played a part in shaping the unique Australian culture, with many of the new cultural influences contributed by immigrants. It is said that now nearly half of all Australian citizens were either born overseas or have parents who were born overseas.
Personally speaking, what I like most about Australia is the people themselves. They have a straightforward and free-and-easy attitude towards life, and their friendliness and warmth made me feel at home wherever I went. After experiencing Australia, I have to say that I agree with the tourism slogan: “There’s nothing like Australia.”

Many parents dream of their children growing up and seeing the world. But Edith Lemay, a mother of four from Canada, worried her children were running out of time to do that.
When her first child, Mia, was little, she noticed she would bump into things. In 2018, Mia was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa
“What it does is that the cell in the retina dies over time and they lose their field of vision. There’s a chance they will go completely blind by midlife,” said Lemay.
The disease is genetic, meaning Lemay’s other kids were at risk. She soon noticed two of her sons, Collin and Laurent, had the same symptoms. They were soon diagnosed, too.
“Of course it was devastating (令人极为震惊的). And when you have a kid, you always have an image of what their future is going to be like and all of a sudden, you get that news and you need to erase that and think it over. And it really is a grieving process,” Lemay said.
Lemay wanted to prepare her kids for what was to come and thought about filling their visual memory. In March, Lemay, her husband, and her four kids left Canada and embarked on an epic journey, traveling the globe for a whole year — showing their kids the world, before it is too late.
During their trip, Lemay is homeschooling her kids. The family also made a bucket list of fun activities they want to accomplish, so each kid can see their dreams come true.
Lemay said her kids are not only making visual memories. They’re also learning important life lessons, like focusing on the positive. “Sometimes they’re tired and there’s frustration. It’s difficult. But with the travel, I want them to be resilient.”
“I want them to know that any situation that’s hard is temporary, because through their life, they’ll need lots of resilience,” she said. “They’re going to adapt to a situation with their eyesight and then in a few years later, they’ll lose a chunk of their eyesights and they will have to readapt and adapt again and fall and get back again,” Lemay continued.
Many parents want to give their kids the world and this mom did.
56. What motivated Edith Lemay to plan the global trip with her family?
A. Her dream of traveling around the world with her kids
B. The hope to cure her kids’ retinitis pigmentosa during the trip
C. The desire to create visual memories for her kids before they lose sight
D. Her kids’ strong request to see the world before they become blind
57.Which of the following is true about the disease retinitis pigmentosa?
A.It can be cured with proper treatment. B.It only affects children’s field of vision temporarily.
C.It is not a genetic disease. D.It may lead to complete blindness by midlife.
58.Which word can best describe Edith Lemay?
A.Helpless. B.Responsible. C.Impulsive. D.Selfish.
59.What can we infer from the passage about Lemay’s kids during the trip?
A.They only gained visual memories of the world.
B.They dropped out of school and stopped learning.
C.They learned to face difficulties with a positive attitude.
D.They complained a lot about the tiring and frustrating journey.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Family’s Trip to Cure Kids’ Disease
B. A Mother’s Effort to Create Visual Memories for Her Kids

WORKING OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
As an adult, one of the first questions you are asked when meeting someone new is, “What do you do?” This is because your career is a very important part of who you are. The career you have defines your life, and so taking time to think about it is an essential exercise for young people.
The best time to start thinking about possible careers is while you are still at school, before you make any choices about your further education. This, however, is not always easy. Some people know what they want to do from a young age, but many others just have a few ideas bouncing around in their heads.
One of the most effective ways to get some insight on a possible career path is to complete a “career aptitude test”. The results of the test will tell you about your strengths and interests, and some tests also suggest careers that you may be suited to. Having this information will provide you with a better chance of finding a job you like. There are many free tests online, so give one a try. Getting a head start in considering your future career may help you for the rest of your life. You don’t want to look back in years to come and say, “I wish I had thought more about what I really wanted to do.”

There are many different kinds of career aptitude tests. Some ask questions about your personal interests and attitudes. Others focus more on asking you to rate different kinds of work scenarios, like working as a librarian or a lawyer. Of course, while completing these sorts of tests, it is very important to be honest—and don’t worry—there are no right or wrong answers.
One popular test asks the participants to grade their preferences for a variety of work tasks. Their answers are then analysed and divided up between six different types of work personalities. The participant is then given a chart showing their score for each type of work personality. The top three scores are used to make a code that indicates the participant’s overall work personality. This code is then used to generate a list of career suggestions.
Your test results are below. Your work personality code is A-I-R.
Work personality types
R: Hands on, active, technical
I: Observant, intellectual
A: Creative, imaginative, original
S: Helpful, people-oriented, responsible
E: Persuasive, confident
C: Organised, detail-oriented
The career suggestions are also based on your education and experience level, but you can look at higher-level careers as well, which is very useful for high school students. For example, you could look at the basic careers to see what work you might like now, and then look at the more advanced careers so you know what you may like to aim for in the future. This is a great tool to help plan your career and let you know what targets you need to reach to get there.
In conclusion, career aptitude tests are clearly a very useful tool. However, it is important to remember that they are only meant for guidance. The secret to a good career is finding something that you are passionate about. So try a few tests online and start thinking about your future career right now!
61.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The answer to the question what you do.
B.Career aptitude tests, a useful tool for career suggestions.

62.Why are you asked a question about your work by a new person?
A.Because it is a very important question. B.Because he wants to do the same work as yours.
C.Because your job is part of your life. D.Because he is interested in your work.
63.What is the best time to think about your possible careers?
A.After you graduate from the college. B.When you are married.

The 20th century was a famously fruitful time for visions of the future, but the 21st century has failed to inspire them in the same way. Science fiction writer William Gibson has called this “future fatigue”, pointing out that we barely ever make reference to the 22nd century.
One reason is that most of the ideas of the future that captured people’s imaginations in the 20th century have mutated since then. Plastic, for example, once billed as the material of the future, has become an environmental and health crisis — its durability and abundance turned downsides.
The dominant images of the future that we are presented with at the moment all have long histories to them. They include space colonization, dystopian artificial intelligence and a longing to bring back the past — but a past that never was. This makes sense given the climate anxiety and dread about the future felt by many people. The future has started to feel like it is closing off rather than opening out.
Jean- Louis Missika, a former deputy mayor of Paris, has written that “when the future is dark, people turn to an idealised past, a lost golden age. Nostalgia (怀旧) becomes a refuge against dangers, a cocoon against the announced declines.”
It’s not that absolutely no new future visions have emerged this century. But it is notable that no major, forward-looking future visions have taken root in our collective imagination since smartphones came to dominate our way of communicating.
I think about the future for a living and it is my experience that unified visions of desirable futures can inspire people to bring about change. They act as motivators and imagination engines. We can use them to visualise the society we want and then commit to work towards that future. Unifying visions of the future are also effectively used in architectural pictures, ads and TV shows; Star Trek has inspired technologists for decades.
We’re in a crucial transition — from fossil fuels to renewables. This can feel terrifying, but also motivating. There are plenty of hotspots of innovation today: look at the rise of rooftop solar energy in Pakistan, where households and small businesses are energetically embarking on the shift to renewables.
But we lack integration: future thinking that assembles these innovations together into unified visions, puts them in a social context and then constructs from the present into the future.
In my new book, I look at four future visions being developed today: more-than-human futures reimagines our relationship with nature; degrowth redesigns the role of the economy; solarpunk recharges cultural innovation; and the metaverse immerses us in vivid digital worlds.
But the future doesn’t stop with these — there should be many more visions emerging. We need to seed them, grow them and see what shape they take when we tell stories of the future once again.
66.Why does future fail to attract people in the 21st century?
A.Because nostalgia replaces hope for tomorrow.
B.Because it repeats old dreams in the 20th century.
C.Because 20th-century visions have turned problematic.
D.Because climate fear has destroyed people’s confidence.
67.What can be learned from the passage?
A.The energy shift plays a key role in future thinking.
B.Looking backward helps build stronger communities.
C.The absence of shared visions holds back future progress.
D.Rapid technological growth has restored people’s optimism.
68. What does the author think of unified future visions?
A. They are mainly reflected in science fiction works.
B. They can encourage people to work for social change.
C. They have been replaced by digital world experiences.
D. They are less effective than individual innovative ideas.
69.Regarding the “future fatigue”, the author is ________.
A.concerned B.critical C.doubtful D.approving
70.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?
A.To explain why “future fatigue” exists.
B.To promote her new book about future visions.
C.To warn against widespread fatigue towards future.
D.To inspire collective imagination of future narratives.

Laurie Johnston took a gift of 200 more than a half-century ago and turned it into 1 million.
The urge for his philanthropy (慈善事业) dates back to 1949 when Johnston was a cash-strapped student in his fourth year of pharmacy (药学) school. He was considering taking a year off to work when a friend of the family called him over one day and handed him an envelope containing $200. “That was a huge amount of money back then. She told me to use it for my schooling and pay it back for somebody else in the future.” Johnston said.
His experience as a child of the Great Depression also played a key role in his philanthropic tendencies. Johnston’s mother would cook for young men who would ride the railway in search of odd jobs to make a few dollars here and there. So, he decided to build a special legacy (遗产) fund. Shortly after he graduated from university, Johnston started saving money and 22 years later, he had accumulated $80,000.
Johnston never took a cent out of the fund for himself and credited a simple saying for being able to build up his million-dollar career. “Never buy what you want, just buy what you need,” he said.
Sheldon Mindell, manager of Riverview Health Centre Foundation, said Johnston’s gift will be put towards rebuilding its 30 care beds, including installing flat-screen televisions and a Wi-Fi system. Mindell also wants to upgrade a meeting area into a place where a family could eat a meal in relative privacy, rather than in the cafeteria.
“I believe generosity isn’t a characteristic you’re born with. You learn it by examples that are set in your childhood or adulthood. This isn’t a rich man who gave away $1 million, but a man who decided 35 years ago that he wanted to do something significant.” Mindell said.
71.What does the underlined word “cash-strapped” in paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 3 words)

16.—Tony must have let out the secret on purpose.
—________. Could you tell me why he did that?
A. Forget it. B.I don’t get it. C.No comment. D.Let it be.
Forget it. B. I don’t get it.我不明白; C. No comment.无可奉告; D. Let it be. 由空后的“ Could you tell me why he did that?(你能告诉我他为什么那样做吗?)” 所以,B项“I don’t get it.我不明白。”承上启下,符合语境。故选B项。
17.More than one student as well as three teachers ________ at the meeting the other day.
A.were awarded B.was awarded C.will be awarded D.have been awarded
分析句子可知,动词award(奖励)是句中谓语动词,与主语More than one student之间是被动关系,结合时间状语the other day可知,讲述过去的事情,应用一般过去时态;当主语后有由 as well as, along with, together with, but, like, rather than, except等词连接的附加成分时,附加成分不影响谓语动词的人称和数的变化,所以“More than one student as well as three teachers”中More than one student决定谓语动词用单数还是复数,又因“more than one+可数名词单数”作主语时,谓语动词用单数,所以本句中谓语动词应用单数形式。
18.The traffic rule says young children under the age of four and ____less than 40 pounds must be in a child safety seat.
A.being weighed B.to weigh C.weighed D.weighing
空处和上文under the age of four并列作名词children的后置定语,weigh“称起来为,有……重,重达……”和逻辑主语children之间为主动关系,应用现在分词。故选D。
19.As the first player to win this award three times, he gives the ________ to his family and teammates.
A.aspect B.credit C.permission D.discount
20.Many of his ideas may seem like building castles in the air, but given the rate ______ artificial intelligence is being developed, these ideas may actually come true in the future.
A.of which B.at which C.in which D.to which
所以这里用at which引导定语从句,修饰先行词the rate。故选B。
21.As a hitch-hiker, I had to ______ to the driver the idea that I was a real traveler, and needed to get somewhere cheaply.
A.get through B.get across C.get over D.get down
A. get through (设法)处理;B. get across解释清楚;C. get over克服;D. get down下来。根据“the idea that I was a real traveler, and needed to get somewhere cheaply.” get sth across (to sb)被传达;被理解;把…… 故选B项。
22.Children, if well ________, are not likely to make any trouble in public places.
A.having educated B.educating
C.to be educated D.Educated
23.Students who are found with pets, whether visiting or owned by the student, are _______ to an initial fine of $100 and a continuing fine of $50 a day per pet.
A.bound B.subject C.subsequent D.Committed
A. bound有义务的;B. subject受…… 根据后文“an initial fine of $100 and a continuing fine of $50 a day per pet.”
24.Each new crew member _______ be provided with adequate health and safety protection, according to the Civil Aviation Regulations
A.may B.will C.shall D.can
A. may可能;B. will将要;C. shall将要;D. can能够,可以。
25.Spotting the car with its window ________ open, a thoughtful passerby quickly alerted the owner, ________ community awareness and care.
A.leaving; showing B.staying; presenting
C.left; displaying D.kept; exhibiting
26.Our hotel can arrange for a certified nurse to look after your children, ________ the youngest apparently is having a fever at the moment.

根据第一段“The career you have defines your life, and so taking time to think about it is an essential exercise for young people.(你的职业生涯决定了你的整个人生,因此年轻人有必要花时间好好思考一下自己的职业规划。)”可知,文章开篇指出职业是个人身份的重要组成部分,思考职业选择很重要,同时根据第三段中“One of the most effective ways to get some insight on a possible career path is to complete a “career aptitude test”.(了解某种职业发展方向的最佳方法之一就是参加“职业能力测试”。)” B选项“Career aptitude tests, a useful tool for career suggestions.( 职业能力测试,是提供职业建议的有用工具。)”
根据文章第一段“As an adult, one of the first questions you are asked when meeting someone new is, ‘What do you do?’ This is because your career is a very important part of who you are. The career you have defines your life, and so taking time to think about it is an essential exercise for young people.(作为成年人,在与新朋友见面时,最先会被问到的问题之一就是:“你是做什么工作的?”这是因为你的职业是你自身的重要组成部分。你的职业决定了你的生活,所以年轻人有必要花时间好好思考一下这个问题。)”可知,当遇到新认识的人时,会被问到工作相关问题,是因为职业是个人身份很重要的一部分,即工作是你生活的一部分。故选C。

D
68.What does the author think of unified future visions?
【答案】66.C 67.C 68.B 69.A 70.D
根据第二段“One reason is that most of the ideas of the future that captured people’s imaginations in the 20th century have mutated since then. Plastic, for example, once billed as the material of the future, has become an environmental and health crisis — its durability and abundance turned downsides.(其中一个原因是,20世纪那些曾激发人们无限遐想的未来构想,自那时起大多已然变味。以塑料为例,这种曾被标榜为“未来材料”的物质,如今已演变为一场环境与健康危机——它原本的耐用性与普及性,反倒成了弊端。)”可知,20世纪的愿景已经出现了问题,所以未来在21世纪无法吸引人们。故选C。
67.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“But we lack integration: future thinking that assembles these innovations together into unified visions, puts them in a social context and then constructs from the present into the future.(但我们缺乏整合:将所有这些创新整合成统一的愿景,将它们置于社会背景中,然后从现在构建到未来的未来思维。)”
根据原文第六段 “unified visions of desirable futures can inspire people to bring about change. They act as motivators and imagination engines. We can use them to visualise the society we want and then commit to work towards that future” 可知,作者认为统一的未来愿景能够激励人们推动变革,促使人们为理想社会而努力。
根据最后一段“But the future doesn’t stop with these — there should be many more visions emerging. We need to seed them, grow them and see what shape they take when we tell stories of the future once again.(但未来不会止步于此——应该会出现更多的愿景。我们需要播种它们,培育它们,看看当我们再次讲述未来的故事时,它们会呈现出什么样的形态。)”可推测出,作者对“未来疲劳”是担忧的。故选A。
文章主要讨论了21世纪人们对未来的憧憬减少的现象,并分析了原因,文章最后提到“But the future doesn’t stop with these — there should be many more visions emerging. We need to seed them, grow them and see what shape they take when we tell stories of the future once again.(但未来不会止步于此——应该会出现更多的愿景。我们需要播种它们,培育它们,看看当我们再次讲述未来的故事时,它们会呈现出什么样的形态。)”由此可知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是激发对未来叙事的集体想象。故选D。
第Ⅱ卷(共35分)
第四部分:写作 (共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
________________________________________________________________________________
72.What contributed to Johnston’s philanthropy? (no more than 10 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________
73.According to Johnston, what was his key principle for saving money? (10 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________
74.What is paragraph 5 mainly about? (no more than 10 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________
75.How do you find Laurie Johnston? Why? (no more than 25 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
71.Short of money. 72.The gift and his childhood experience. 73.Never buy what you want, just buy what you need. 574.The use of Johnston’s gift. 75.He is generous. Because he donated $1 million though he wasn’t born rich.
根据第二段中“He was considering taking a year off to work when a friend of the family called him over one day and handed him an envelope containing $200. “That was a huge amount of money back then. She told me to use it for my schooling and pay it back for somebody else in the future.” Johnston said. (他正考虑休学一年去工作,这时一位家庭友人有一天叫他过去,递给他一个装有200美元的信封。Johnston说:“这在当时是一大笔钱。她告诉我用它来完成学业,并在未来回报给其他人。”)”可知,Johnston是因为缺钱才考虑休学打工,因此“cash-strapped”意为“缺钱、手头紧”。故答案为:Short of money.
根据第二段“The urge for his philanthropy (慈善事业) dates back to 1949 when Johnston was a cash-strapped student in his fourth year of pharmacy (药学) school. He was considering taking a year off to work when a friend of the family called him over one day and handed him an envelope containing $200. “That was a huge amount of money back then. She told me to use it for my schooling and pay it back for somebody else in the future.” Johnston said. (他的慈善冲动可以追溯到1949年,当时Johnston是药学院四年级学生,手头拮据。他正考虑休学一年去工作,这时一位家庭友人有一天叫他过去,递给他一个装有200美元的信封。Johnston说:“这在当时是一大笔钱。她告诉我用它来完成学业,并在未来回报给其他人。”)”和第三段中“His experience as a child of the Great Depression also played a key role in his philanthropic tendencies. (他作为大萧条时期孩童的经历也对他的慈善倾向起到了关键作用)”可知,推动他慈善行为的主要是当初收到的赠款和他的童年经历。故答案为:The gift and his childhood experience.
根据第四段中“Johnston never took a cent out of the fund for himself and credited a simple saying for being able to build up his million-dollar career. “Never buy what you want, just buy what you need,” he said. (Johnston从未从基金中为自己拿出一分钱,并将他能建立起百万美元事业归功于一句简单的格言。他说:“永远不要买你想要的,只买你需要的。”)”可知,他的储蓄原则就是:永远不要买你想要的,只买你需要的。故答案为:Never buy what you want, just buy what you need.
根据第五段“Sheldon Mindell, manager of Riverview Health Centre Foundation, said Johnston’s gift will be put towards rebuilding its 30 care beds, including installing flat-screen televisions and a Wi-Fi system. Mindell also wants to upgrade a meeting area into a place where a family could eat a meal in relative privacy, rather than in the cafeteria. (Riverview健康中心基金会经理Sheldon Mindell表示,Johnston的捐款将用于重建其30张护理床,包括安装平板电视和Wi-Fi系统。Mindell还想将一个会议区升级成一个家庭可以相对私密地用餐的地方,而不是在食堂)”可知,本段主要介绍了这笔捐款的具体用途。故答案为:The use of Johnston’s gift.
根据第六段中“This isn’t a rich man who gave away $1 million, but a man who decided 35 years ago that he wanted to do something significant. (这不是一个捐出100万美元的富人,而是一个在35年前就决定要做些有意义事情的人)”可知,Johnston的慷慨并非源于天生富有,而是源于他长期的决心和节俭。结合他捐赠巨款的行为,可以评价他是一个慷慨的人。故答案为:He is generous. Because he decided long ago to do something significant and donated $1 million through saving.
1.科技为传统文化提供传播平台(如短视频、VR展示);
2.科技促进传统与现代的创新融合(如数字故宫、AI修复文物);
提示词:“Is technological development conducive to the inheritance of traditional culture?”“科技发展是否有利于传统文化传承”
注意:(1) 词数不少于100;
Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s my honor to argue that technological development helps pass on traditional culture. Instead of harming our cultural roots, technology has become a useful tool to keep our old traditions alive.
First, technology gives traditional culture more ways to spread. Short-video apps and VR shows have broken down distance and time limits. For example, ancient poems, traditional skills and folk dances can now reach people all over the world easily. A craftsman in a small village can show his work to millions through live streams. Students from other countries can "visit" the Forbidden City with VR, feeling its beauty without traveling to Beijing. This makes our cultural heritage not just in museums or books, but something everyone can experience.
Second, technology helps mix tradition with modern life, so our culture won’t be forgotten. Projects like the Digital Palace Museum, which puts thousands of old things online, and AI fixing broken ancient writings, not only save these relics but also present them in new ways. AI can even study old music and create new songs with traditional styles, making young people more interested in our heritage.
We should remember that technology is just a tool. How we use it matters. But we can’t deny that it helps protect our culture. Let’s use technology well to keep our traditions, so the wisdom of our ancestors can still enrich the world for a long time.
Thank you.

A
25 SepNext week I’m travelling to Australia to visit a friend there over the school holidays.

1 OctI'm here in Sydney!Since I arrived,my friend has brought me to my first open-air
barbecue and has also shared many different but yummy meals with me,so my first
impressions of Australia have been all about food!A lot of typical australian food, such as the
Sunday roast,is originally British.Bakeries,fast-food joints,butcher shops,cafes,and
restaurants everywhere provide some of the premier food experiences in the world. The
influence of Asian cultures,on the other hand, led to the introduction of bean curd and Asian
herbs, along with Australian versions of foods like the Chinese-inspired dim sim.
3 OctMy friend and I have arrived in Katherine,a town in Australia's Northern
Territory. We're here to learn about the life and customs of the Aborigines, who are native to
Australia. The Aboriginal population might be small, but its influence is still visible. For
example,"Bondi"in "Bondi Beach"is an Aboriginal word meaning "water breaking over
rocks".To survive in this vast land on the ocean, the Aborigines had to be in close contact
with nature. This shows in their music, too, which celebrates the natural world and the
spiritual world around them. Most of their musical instruments are really just sticks found on
the ground, among which there is an amazing instrument called the didgeridoo.
The didgeridoo is made from a tree branch which is hollow. To play the didgeridoo, you
put your mouth on one end and blow while vibrating your lips.Unlike a horn, there are no
finger holes. The didgeridoo player has to change the shape of his mouth in order to change
pitch.A skilled player can play for a long time without stopping to breathe. He does this by
continually breathing in through his nose while breathing out through his mouth and into the
didgeridoo.I tried to learn how to play it,but after trying for hours,I was convinced that I
could never make a musical sound with this instrument!

6 OctIt's almost time for me to say goodbye to Australia.I've enjoyed my time here
very much. After being here for a while,my biggest impression is the complicated mix of
peoples and cultures that make up the nation.Although the main cultural influence since 1788
has been Western culture, minority cultures have also played a part in shaping the unique
Australian culture, with many of the new cultural influences contributed by immigrants. It is
said that now nearly half of all Australian citizens were either born overseas or have parents
who were born overseas.
Personally speaking, what I like most about Australia is the people themselves. They
have a straightforward and free-and-easy attitude towards life, and their friendliness and
warmth made me feel at home wherever I went. After experiencing Australia,I have to say
that I agree with the tourism slogan:"There's nothing like Australia."

WORKING OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
O
As an adult, one of the first questions you are asked when meeting someone new is,"What do
you do?"This is because your career is a very important part of who you are.The career you have
defines your life, and so taking time to think about it is an essential exercise for young people
然
The best time to start thinking about possible careers is while you are still at school, before
you make any choices about your further education. This, however,is not always easy. Some people
:
know what they want to do from a young age,but many others just have a few ideas bouncing
:
around in their heads
O
One of the most effective ways to get some insight on a possible career path is to complete a
"career aptitude test".The results of the test will tell you about your strengths and interests, and
:
some tests also suggest careers that you may be suited to.Having this information will provide you
with a better chance of finding a job you like. There are many free tests online,so give one a try.
Getting a head start in considering your future career may help you for the rest of your life. You
don't want to look back in years to come and say,"I wish I had thought more about what I really
wanted to do."

There are many different kinds of career aptitude tests. Some ask questions about your
personal interests and attitudes.Others focus more on asking you to rate different kinds of work
scenarios,like working as a librarian or a lawyer.Of course,while completing these sorts of tests,it
is very important to be honest-and don't worry-there are no right or wrong answers.
One popular test asks the participants to grade their preferences for a variety of work tasks.
Their answers are then analysed and divided up between six different types of work personalities.
The participant is then given a chart showing their score for each type of work personality. The top
three scores are used to make a code that indicates the participant's overall work personality. This
code is then used to generate a list of career suggestions.
Your test results are below.Your work personality code is A-I-R.

The career suggestions are also based on your education and experience level, but you can
look at higher-level careers as well, which is very useful for high school students. For example, you
could look at the basic careers to see what work you might like now,and then look at the more
advanced careers so you know what you may like to aim for in the future. This is a great tool to help
plan your career and let you know what targets you need to reach to get there.

The 20th century was a famously fruitful time for visions of the future, but the 21st century
has failed to inspire them in the same way.Science fiction writer William Gibson has called this
"future fatigue",pointing out that we barely ever make reference to the 22nd century
One reason is that most of the ideas of the future that captured people's imaginations in the
游
20th century have mutated since then.Plastic, for example, once billed as the material of the future,
游
has become an environmental and health crisis-its durability and abundance turned downsides
The dominant images of the future that we are presented with at the moment all have long
O
histories to them. They include space colonization, dystopian artificial intelligence and a longing to
bring back the past-but a past that never was. This makes sense given the climate anxiety and
dread about the future felt by many people. The future has started to feel like it is closing off rather
than opening out.
E
Jean-Louis Missika,a former deputy mayor of Paris, has written that"when the future is dark,
people turn to an idealised past,a lost golden age.Nostalgia (becomes a refuge against
世
dangers,a cocoon against the announced declines."
It's not that absolutely no new future visions have emerged this century. But it is notable that
no major,forward-looking future visions have taken root in our collective imagination since
smartphones came to dominate our way of communicating.
I think about the future for a living and it is my experience that unified visions of desirable
焙
futures can inspire people to bring about change. They act as motivators and imagination engines.
:
We can use them to visualise the society we want and then commit to work towards that future.
Unifying visions of the future are also effectively used in architectural pictures, ads and TV shows,
Star Trek has inspired technologists for decades.

But we lack integration:future thinking that assembles these innovations together into unified
visions, puts them in a social context and then constructs from the present into the future

66.Why does future fail to attract people in the 21st century?

Laurie Johnston took a gift of 200 more than a half-century ago and turned it into 1 million
The urge for his philanthropy(慈善事业)dates back to 1949 when Johnston was a cash-st恤apped
student in his fourth year of pharmacy (school. He was considering taking a year off to work
when a friend of the family called him over one day and handed him an envelope containing $200.
"That was a huge amount of money back then. She told me to use it for my schooling and pay it
back for somebody else in the future."Johnston said.
His experience as a child of the Great Depression also played a key role in his philanthropic
tendencies.Johnston's mother would cook for young men who would ride the railway in search of
odd jobs to make a few dollars here and there. So,he decided to build a special legacy (fund.
Shortly after he graduated from university,Johnston started saving money and 22 years later,he had
accumulated $80,000.
Johnston never took a cent out of the fund for himself and credited a simple saying for being able
to build up his million-dollar career.Never buy what you want, just buy what you need,"he said.
Sheldon Mindell, manager of Riverview Health Centre Foundation, said Johnston's gift will be
put towards rebuilding its 30 care beds, including installing flat-screen televisions and a Wi-Fi
system.Mindell also wants to upgrade a meeting area into a place where a family could eat a meal
in relative privacy, rather than in the cafeteria.
"I believe generosity isn't a characteristic you're born with. You learn it by examples that are set
in your childhood or adulthood. This isn't a rich man who gave away $1 million, but a man who
decided 35 years ago that he wanted to do something significant."Mindell said

Thank you.
