Tens of thousands of Californians are turning to an app called Watch Duty as deadly fires sweep across the state. The app shows a map with flame icons (火焰图标)marking where fires are burning. In addition to official government accounts, the app also pulls in data from wildfire cameras, satellite images, and 911 calls. A team of about 200 public reporters — which include firefighters, journalists, and emergency responders — rapidly check that material and then send it to users through the app.
Watch Duty was founded in 2021 by a California software engineer named John Mills. “It is not over-engineered by design. With a clear presentation of information, the system is very smooth to operate,” Mills said. Due to that, the app gained 22,000 users within two days of its introduction, It ended with 7.2 million users in 2024. As fires occurred, the app reportedly had more than 600,000 new users. Social media users have encouraged residents in affected areas to download the app in order to track the fire’s rapid movements and stay aware of possible evacuation(撤离)orders.
Users receive near real-time information on a fire’s path. “Our team values quality over amount. We’re not in a big hurry to share information that we might have to correct later. We make sure the rapid information being pushed through the app is of high quality,” said Nick Russel, the app’s vice president of operations. “We just want to help people make informed decisions with our app in hand.”
Taylor, a local resident, downloaded the Watch Duty app. She said, “It’s like having ordinary people stay up late to ‘watch duty’ during a disaster. It allows us to know the fires nearby, and even shows us where an evacuation center is. Instead of relying on chaotic (混乱的)social media information, communities can stay informed and safe now.”
More parts of the world are feeling the impact of the increase in extreme weather events worsened by climate change. Watch Duty is currently focused on tracking wildfires, but it’s looking to broaden its services. It may become a more common companion for people as a range of dangerous weather events, from fires and floods to stronger hurricanes, go from unusual to common.
4. What does the Watch Duty app mainly offer?
A. Various fire data resources. B. Personalized safety warnings.
C. Tips on future fire movements. D. Detailed firefighting instructions.
5. Why does Watch Duty achieve rapid user growth?
A. It allows direct chat between users.
B. It has a simple user-friendly design.
C. It partners social media strategically.
D. It teaches practical engineering knowledge.
6 What does the team focus on according to Nick Russel?
A. Reviewing users’ comments.
B. Sending dependable updates.
C. Checking users’ general decisions.
D. Ensuring fast information delivery.
7. How does Taylor consider Watch Duty?
A. Confusing. B. Ordinary. C. Risky. D. Valuable.

In recent years, the concept of “slow travel” has appeared as a reaction to the fast-paced, mass tourism that dominates (主宰) the industry. Slow travel encourages travelers to engage deeply with local cultures, stay longer in destinations, and form meaningful connections with local communities.
One of the key principles of slow travel is to reduce environmental impact. By choosing to stay in locally-owned accommodations, eating at family-run restaurants, and using public transportation or bicycles, travelers can greatly decrease their carbon footprint. For instance, a study found that tourists who engage in slow travel produce up to 70% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to those on traditional package tours.
Slow travel also allows for a deeper cultural understanding. Instead of rushing through tourist attractions, slow travelers take the time to participate in local traditions, learn about historical importance, and interact with locals. This not only enriches the travel experience but also provides economic benefits to local communities. In some rural areas, “slow travel” has helped preserve (保存) endangered crafts and save dying traditions.
However, slow travel is not without challenges. It requires more planning and flexibility. As travelers need to research local customs, transportation options, and authentic (真实的) experiences. Additionally, slow travel may not be feasible for everyone due to time or budget (预算) limit. For busy professionals or families with limited vacation days, spending weeks in a single destination may seem unrealistic.
Despite these challenges, the slow travel movement continues to grow. Travelers are becoming more aware of their environmental and cultural impact, and many are seeking more authentic and sustainable ways to explore the world. As a result, travel companies are starting to offer more slow-travel options, such as longer home-stays and cultural experience programs.
8. Which is the benefit of slow travel?
A. It can save money on traveling.
B. It can be more environmentally friendly.
C. It can increase the income of travel companies.
D. It can allow travelers to visit more places hurriedly.
9. What can we learn about slow travel from the third paragraph?
A. It has little impact on local economies.
B. It focuses on interactions with travelers.
C. It discourages travelers from learning about history.
D. It may contribute to the preservation of traditional crafts.
10. What does the underlined word “feasible” mean in this context?
A. desirable B. affordable C. practical D. classical
11. What can be inferred about the future of slow travel?
A. It will cost less as time passes.
B. It will only be accessible to rich travelers.
C. It may become more popular in the future.
D. It will take the place of traditional tourism entirely.
B 9. D 10. C 11. C

根据第二段中的“One of the key principles of slow travel is to reduce environmental impact. By choosing to stay in locally-owned accommodations, eating at family-run restaurants, and using public transportation or bicycles, travelers can greatly decrease their carbon footprint. (慢旅行的核心原则之一是减少环境影响。通过选择入住当地经营的住宿、在家庭经营的餐厅用餐、使用公共交通或自行车,旅行者能大幅降低碳足迹。)”可知,慢旅行能减少环境影响、降低碳足迹,具备更环保的优势。故选B项。
【9题详解】

For busy professionals or families with limited vacation days, spending weeks in a single destination may seem unrealistic. 故划线词与C选项“practical(切实可行的)”为同义词。
根据第五段中的“Despite these challenges, the slow travel movement continues to grow. Travelers are becoming more aware of their environmental and cultural impact, and many are seeking more authentic and sustainable ways to explore the world. As a result, travel companies are starting to offer more slow-travel options, such as longer home-stays and cultural experience programs. (尽管面临诸多挑战,慢旅行运动仍在持续发展。旅行者们越来越意识到自身对环境和文化的潜在影响,许多人正在寻求更真实且可持续的方式来探索世界。因此,旅游公司也开始提供更多慢旅行的选项,比如更长的民宿住宿和文化体验项目。)”可知,慢旅行趋势在发展,旅行者需求增加且旅游公司积极配合,由此可推断其未来可能会更受欢迎。故选C项。

When people think about surfing (冲浪), they imagine a young person riding the waves standing on a surfboard. Another special form of surfing, which is easier on your knees, is bodyboarding (趴板冲浪) where the surfer rides a specially designed bodyboard lying on the stomach. This sport is getting popularity because it is attractive to people of all ages.
As people age, it’s common to lose confidence and develop a strong sense of fear when beginning physical activities, especially those like surfing. Some surfing programs aim to fight these worries by providing expert direction and developing a sense of social connection while offering health benefits to seniors. But they’re about more than just exercise. There’s a social advantage that is especially key to seniors. It’s really important to get older people in the water and get them active.
A group of women in Western Australia take to the surf every week. These women who are called Granny Grommets have been riding waves in Albany for 25 years. The group began when founder (创办人) Kim Buttfield was teaching a mom and daughter to surf, and some older women walked to her and curiously asked, “What about us?” Buttfield decided to teach these women bodyboarding because it is easier on aging knees than standing on a surfboard. She said that there are only two requirements for joining: a positive attitude and members that have to be at least 50 years old.
There are now more than 100 women in the group including Glenn Scott who became a member when she was 80. “All you need for a Granny Grommet is a bodyboard and a laugh across your face,” Scott said. Granny Grommets have encouraged other senior surfing groups around Australia and even have gone around the world. There are groups in South Africa and even as far north as France. This shows that all you need is surf, a board, and determination to ride the waves at any age.
12. What makes bodyboarding special?
A. Its speed of surfing. B. Its competition rules.
C. The ages of the players. D. The position on the bodyboard.
13. What do the surfing programs mentioned in paragraph 2 aim to do?
A. Offer expert direction to advanced surfers.
B. Tell the youth about health benefits of surfing.
C. Help older people get over fears and keep active.
D. Encourage social connections among young surfers.
14. What can be inferred about the older women from the question “What about us?”?
A. They wanted to learn surfing. B. They disliked surfing.
C. They were afraid of surfing. D. They were experienced in surfing.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Being a Popular Surfer B. Getting Old People into Surfing
C. Joining in Women’s Surfing Programs D. Pushing Seniors to Attend a Global Surfing Event
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第一段中“When people think about surfing (冲浪), they imagine a young person riding the waves standing on a surfboard. Another special form of surfing, which is easier on your knees, is bodyboarding (趴板冲浪) where the surfer rides a specially designed bodyboard lying on the stomach. (当人们想到冲浪时,他们会想象一个年轻人站在冲浪板上乘风破浪。另一种特殊形式的冲浪,对膝盖更友好,是趴板冲浪,冲浪者可以俯卧在特制的趴板上)”可知,趴板冲浪的特殊之处在于冲浪者趴在冲浪板上的姿势。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As people age, it’s common to lose confidence and develop a strong sense of fear when beginning physical activities, especially those like surfing. Some surfing programs aim to fight these worries by providing expert direction and developing a sense of social connection while offering health benefits to seniors. (随着人们年龄的增长,在开始体育活动时,尤其是像冲浪这样的活动,人们通常会失去信心,产生强烈的恐惧感。一些冲浪项目旨在通过提供专家指导和发展社会联系感来消除这些担忧,同时为老年人提供健康益处)”和“It’s really important to get older people in the water and get them active. (让老年人下水并让他们活跃起来非常重要)”可知,这些冲浪项目旨在帮助老年人克服恐惧并保持活力。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The group began when founder (创办人) Kim Buttfield was teaching a mom and daughter to surf, and some older women walked to her and curiously asked, “What about us?” Buttfield decided to teach these women bodyboarding (该组织成立之初,创始人Kim Buttfield正在教一对母女冲浪,一些年长的女性走到她身边,好奇地问:“教我们如何?”Buttfield决定教这些女性趴板冲浪)”可知,年长女性因为看到一对母女学习冲浪而提出该问题,之后Kim决定教她们,由此可知,这一问题暗示她们渴望学习冲浪。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Another special form of surfing, which is easier on your knees, is bodyboarding (趴板冲浪) where the surfer rides a specially designed bodyboard lying on the stomach. This sport is getting popularity because it is attractive to people of all ages.

Instead of relying on chaotic (混乱)social media information, communities can stay informed and safe now.”
6. What does the team focus on according to Nick Russel?

As people age it’s common to lose confidence and develop a strong sense of fear when beginning physical activities, especially those like surfing.
