John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David,
How time flies! It’s been 3 months since I came to China. I’m having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I’ve completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I’d like to share some with you.
In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan , Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5, 000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn’t appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 17th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world. Lastly, I’d like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals—the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历).
If you’d like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.
Best wishes!
Yours,
John

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, for some a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also, sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure (血压).
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert (专家) in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit card (信用卡), you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should sleep to ‘pay back’ the hours on your ‘sleep credit card.’”
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish (愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more.”

C. Having less sleep.
D. Interested in sleep.
6. According to Dr. James Maas, what is sleep like?
A. An hour.
B. A report.
C. A credit card.
D. A piece of paper.
7. What is the best title of the passage?

B. The Value of Study
C. The Ways of Eating Less

On the evening of September 1st in 2022 all the teachers and students gathered (聚集) in the cloud and had the first class of this term. This show is popular among all the primary and middle school students because it shows something educational and meaningful through some real stories.

Do you know what a team needs most? If people on your team are not good at communication, you may often feel terrible. To create a successful team, good communication is the most necessary for both the team members and the leader. Here are some helpful suggestions.
❶Don’t criticize (批评) other people.

❷ Listen to other people actively and think about their ideas carefully.
When someone tells you about their ideas, you should listen to them actively and think about their ideas carefully, no matter how silly they may seem. This shows you are interested in their ideas and makes them feel good. If you are unclear about something, you should ask them about it. By doing this you can clear up any confusion (困惑) before moving on.
❸Share your own ideas with other people.
When you have a new idea, talk about it with your team members. This helps to make the idea better. Besides, it also helps to make your relationships with your team members better.

八、Reading Expression (共1小题, 共10分)
As a child, Huang Rongbing would watch his mother, Weng Xiuzhen, comb her long and thick hair. After forming a bun at the back of her head, she would decorate it with colourful flowers, the 34-year-old man recalled.
All the women in the small fishing village of Xunpu in Quanzhou, Fujian province, decorated their hair this way. The colorful and unique (独一无二的) headdress is known as zanhuan or zanhuawei. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2008.
As an old saying in Xunpu goes, “Put flowers in your hair in this life and you will also be pretty in the afterlife.”
Zanhua finally woke up Huang’s career dream. In 2016, he and his older sister opened a salon where tourists could get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos taken. “We have been fully booked, and now there are over 200 businesses offering services to dress tourists with a zanhua,” said Huang.
After going through the full zanhua experience, Hu Titi, one of Huang’s customers, even brought zanhua culture to Paris in France last year. Under the Eiffel Tower, she shot photos and videos of herself dressed in traditional Chinese clothes with a zanhua in her hair.
The increase in tourist visits has pleased Huang not only because it is good for his business but also because it has led to greater awareness of the history and culture behind zanhua headwear.
“Earning a big name for their hard work, resilience (坚韧) and compassion (同情心), the women of Xunpu are well-known for harvesting the highest quality seafood,” said Huang. “When they put a zanhua on their heads, they express their wish to look for happiness. The flowers are seen as a symbol of hope,” he added.
Fill in the blanks according to the passage.
41. Zanhua is a ________ and ________ headdress, according to the passage.
42. In 2016, he and his older sister opened a salon where tourists could get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and they can ________ ________.
