四.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2. 5分,满分50分)
A
Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.
AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £ 169. 15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost £ 118.15.
If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid--- or you're looking for a big event to pass your time--- check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.
STAYAWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.
Don't be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge's Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £ 95.95 . A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £ 75.75 . And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £ 62.95 .
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London. Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As a choice consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen, where you can cook. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O'Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for £ 420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.
GET ON A BIKE London’s "Boris bikes' have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programs that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.
Among the smaller cities with their own programs are Newcastle (casual members pay around £ 1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day).

Jim Johnson, a mail carrier, was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland, Westover and Westmore Hills neighborhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail. He knew all the kids and their pets by name. He carried in the groceries, he took out and unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn’t doing all that, Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns (草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now, the trust in local postal service lives on. In many communities, that trust is won every day when life — saving medicine, greeting cards, social security checks, college acceptance letters — even the bills — appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades, Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day. Butch, a dog who belonged to one of the neighbors, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day before, he got into the jump seat and they were off. On the route, Jim and Butch had become inseparable. Now, the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop, Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.
It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier. That’s what the postal service means to us.

A. He’s open-minded. B. He’s sharp-eyed.
C. He’s warm-hearted. D. He’s strong-willed.
42. What does the underlined word “disparaged” in paragraph 2 mean?

43. What did Jim do besides daily delivery on his final days of work?
A. He drove Butch to its owner.
B. He sent presents to his friends.
C. He prepared a retirement party.
D. He said goodbye to the neighbors.
44 What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To remember a respected mail carrier.
B. To record an unforgettable experience.
C. To raise funds for the postal service.
D. To call for harmony in the community.
45. Which of the following best shows the relationship between Jim and the community?
A. Jim only delivered mails and had little connection with neighbors.
B. Jim was just a stranger to most people in the community.
C. Jim was like a family member to the community residents.
D. Jim mainly communicated with the community through Butch.

To write his book, The 5-Factor World Diet, nutritionist Harley Pasternak traveled to the healthiest countries around the world to learn more about what made their meals extra nourishing.
He noted that Japanese people ate a wonderful variety of seaweeds and that Chinese people tried to include at least five different colors in every meal. Pasternak also came away with some valuable observations about how different the North American way of life was, compared with many other countries.
For starters, Americans eat much bigger portions than people in other countries. “We don’t prioritize eating seasonally or locally, and we also add lots of salt, sugar and thickening agents to our foods, explained Pasternak. Contrast that to the healthy Mediterranean, Nordic and Okinawan diets listed in Pasternak’s book. They all seem to stick to the distinction of regional, seasonal produce.”
For example, a traditional Mediterranean diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil as the main components of nutritional intake. Fish, chicken and red wine make moderate appearances, while red meat, salt and sugar are used much less often. The benefits of a traditional Mediterranean diet have been studied since the 1970s, and researchers have found that living that olive oil life can help people lose weight, lower their heart disease risk and reverse diabetes (糖尿病).
Most other healthy eating cultures also make meals an event — say, multiple courses around the family table, or a glass or two of red wine at a long lunch — as opposed to hurriedly wolfing down handfuls of cereal above the kitchen sink and calling it dinner.
Each of the healthy eating cultures has its own unique feature. But Pasternak did take note of one unifying factor in all of the healthy societies he observed. “The only overlapping feature in most of these healthy countries is that they all walk way more than the average American,” said Pasternak. “So really, regardless of what you’re eating, if someone’s walking four miles more than you each day, they’ re going to be a lot thinner and live a lot longer than you.”
46. What characterizes Japanese and Chinese foods?
A. Variety. B. Flavor. C. Color. D. Naturalness.
47. What is typical of Americans in the way of eating?
A. They emphasize nutrition. B. They tend to eat quite a lot.
C. They prioritize convenience. D. They care about flavors.
48. What features in Mediterranean, Nordic and Okinawan diets?
A. Fruits and vegetables. B. Olive oil and red wine.
C. Seasonal local produce. D. Unprocessed ingredients.
49. What do people in most healthy eating cultures have in common?
A. They get the whole family to eat at a table.
B. They eat their meals regularly and punctually.
C. They consume plenty of cereal for breakfast.
D. They attach great importance to their meals.
50. Compared with the average American, people in healthy societies ______ .
A walk at least 4 miles a day
B. do considerably more walking
C. pay more attention to body shape
D. consume a lot more organic food
D
Ralph Emerson once said that the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, to be loving, to make some difference in the world. While we appreciate such words of wisdom, we rarely try to follow them in our lives.
Most people prefer to live a good life themselves, ignoring their responsibilities for the world. This narrow perception of a good life may provide short-term benefits, but is sure to lead to long-term harm and suffering. A good life based on comfort and luxury may eventually lead to more pain because we spoil our health and even our character, principles, ideals, and relationships.
What then, is the secret of a good life? A good life is a process, not a state of being: a direction, not a destination. We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any anticipation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness. More importantly, we must know ourselves inside out. Only when we examine ourselves deeply can we discover our abilities and recognize our limitations, and then work accordingly to create a better world.
The first requirement for a good life is having a loving heart. When we do certain right things merely as a duty, we find our job so tiresome that we'll soon burn out. However, when we do that same job out of love, we not only enjoy what we do, but also do it with an effortless feeling.
However, love alone is insufficient to lead a good life. Love sometimes blinds us to the reality. Consequently, our good intentions may not lead to good results. To achieve desired outcome, those who want to do good to others also need to equip themselves with accurate world knowledge. False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. If love is the engine of a car, knowledge is the steering wheel (方向盘). If the engine lacks power, the car can’t move; if the driver loses control of the steering, a road accident probably occurs. Only with love in heart and the right knowledge in mind can we lead a good life.
With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others. When we see the impact of our good work on the world, we give meaning to our life and earn lasting joy and happiness.
51. What effect does the narrow perception of a good life have on us?
A. Making us simple-minded. B. Making us short-sighted.
C. Leading us onto a busy road. D. Keeping us from comfort and luxury.
52. According to the author, how can one gain true happiness?
A. Through maintaining good health. B. By going through pain and suffering.
C. By recognizing one’s abilities and limitations. D. Through offering help much needed by others.
53. According to Paragraph 4, doing certain right things with a loving heart makes one ________.
A. less selfish B. less pessimistic C. more motivated D. more responsible
54. In what case may good intentions fail to lead to desired results?
A. When we have wrong knowledge of the world. B. When our love for the world is insufficient.
C. When we are insensitive to dangers in life. D. When we stay blind to the reality.
55. According to Paragraph 5, life can be made truly good when ________.
A. inspired by love and guided by knowledge B. directed by love and pushed by knowledge
C. purified by love and enriched by knowledge D. promoted by love and defined by knowledge
五.阅读表达(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按照要求完成阅读任务。
At the age of forty-five, my usually well-ordered life became full of changes. After twenty-two years of working in a bank, a plan to use less staff led to the unemployment of over one hundred people. Unluckily,I was one of them.
My once good future became uncertain. However, I was not a single parent, so the family did not depend only on my income and my husband can support the family. My motto(格言) has always been,“Change is good; change is progress, but when it affected my life, I had to change it. Accept change and make the most of it.” From the beginning, I chose to look at this matter not as bad luck, but as a welcome chance. I refused to become sorry; instead, I actively planned to do something new and different.
Having a positive attitude made all the difference in the way I pursued(追求) the future. First, I decided to return to college and graduate many years later than I should have. Doing this at my age took more than a little courage. Not being a graduate had never held me back in my career in the bank, but now it’s a personal goal I was looking forward to achieving. With a lot of determination, I went to evening classes and became an adult student. In the class, I became more and more confident. During this time,I realized that no matter what life throws in our way, nothing can hinder our personal growth.
The second thing I did to improve my inner self was to reevaluate(评价) my past life. It used to be filled with endless, and sometimes meaningless events. But now, my heart and life are completely around people I care for.
The loss of my job led to some positive changes in my life. Revisiting the past made room for the future. I realize that I have accepted the change, and am making the most of it.
56. What made the author lose her job? (no more than 10 words)
57. What did the author do after the unemployment? (no more than 15 words)

This is the way how he spoke.
正:This is how he spoke. / This is the way (that, in which) he spoke.
Don’t forget the time (that) I’ve told you. 不要忘记我告诉你的时间。
This is the house (that) he bought recently. 这就是他最近买的那座房子。
Please tell me the reason (that) you know. 请告诉我你所知道的原因吧。
本题为when在从句中作时间状语,修饰先行词break。
9. He regretted the day _________ he wasted in the woods and _________ he should have studied.
A. when; when B. that; when C. when; that D. that; that
【答案】B
【解析】
【详解】考查定语从句。句意:他后悔在树林里浪费了一天,后悔本该学习的那一天。分析句子可知,分析第一个空:“he wasted in the woods”是一个定语从句,修饰先行词“the day”。在这个定语从句中,“wasted”是及物动词,缺少宾语,而关系代词“that”可以在定语从句中作宾语,指代先行词“the day”,即“he wasted the day in the woods”。关系副词“when”在定语从句中作时间状语,这里从句不缺少时间状语,所以不能用“when”,因此第一个空应填“that”。分析第二个空:“he should have studied”也是一个定语从句,修饰先行词“the day”。在这个从句中,“studied”是不及物动词,从句不缺少宾语,但缺少时间状语,表示“在那天他本应该学习”,关系副词“when”可以在定语从句中作时间状语,所以第二个空应填“when”。故选B项。
10. (2015•湖北) This meeting room is a non-smoking area. I would like to warn you ___________ that if you smoked here you would be fined.

14. ________ the application form before the deadline, Wang Tao missed the chance to be admitted to his ideal university.

15. Finally, remember to warm up before exercising and __________________ at the end of your workout.
A. delay B. stretch C. follow D. change

41. What do we know about Jim Johnson from the first paragraph?
A. He’s open-minded. B. He’s sharp-eyed.
C. He’s warm-hearted. D. He’s strong-willed.
42. What does the underlined word “disparaged” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Refused. B. Criticized. C. Investigated. D. Suspended.
43. What did Jim do besides daily delivery on his final days of work?
A. He drove Butch to its owner.
B. He sent presents to his friends.
C. He prepared a retirement party.
D. He said goodbye to the neighbors.
44. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

词句猜测题。根据第二段“Though the postal service is often disparaged now, the trust in local postal service lives on.(尽管现在邮政服务经常被disparaged,但人们对当地邮政服务的信任依然存在。)”且由“though”表转折可知,前后句语义相反,后半句强调“信任依然存在”,则前半句应指邮政服务常受负面评价,所以猜测disparaged意为“批评”,与 “Criticized”含义一致。故选B项。
【43题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“At every stop, Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.(每到一站,吉姆都会接受那些早已如同家人的家庭的离别祝福。现场有泪水也有欢笑,拥抱中满是温馨的回忆。)”可知,吉姆在工作的最后日子里,除了日常送信,还与邻居们道别。故选D项。

To write his book, The 5-Factor World Diet, nutritionist Harley Pasternak traveled to the healthiest countries around the world to learn more about what made their meals extra nourishing.
He noted that Japanese people ate a wonderful variety of seaweeds, and that Chinese people tried to include at least five different colors in every meal.

【答案】 Coping Strategies for My Senior Three
As a soon-to-be senior three student at Yaohua High School, I’m well aware that this year will be challenging yet full of opportunities. Here are my strategies to cope with senior three life.
For improving academic performance, I’ll make a detailed study plan. I’ll allocate specific time slots for each subject every day. For instance, I’ll spend more time on weak subjects like math. I plan to do extra exercise and summarize problem-solving methods regularly. Also, I’ll actively participate in class discussions to gain different perspectives and clarify doubts promptly.
To stay fit physically and mentally, I’ll employ the following approaches to keeping my spirits up. No matter how busy I am, I’ll go to bed before 11 o’clock and get up at 6 o’clock to keep a regular routine. Moreover, I’ll set aside 30 minutes each day for physical activities, such as jogging or playing badminton. When feeling stressed, I’ll talk to my friends or parents, or write down my feelings in a journal. Reading some inspiring books during breaks is also a good way to relax my mind.
With these strategies, I believe I can make the most of senior three and achieve my dream of entering a good university.
