Growing up in Denmark,a country that does not have university athletics,I was afraid of high school
graduation because it would mean I had to choose between two childhood passions:basketball and chemistry.
However, after leaming about U.S.colleges,I realized there was a way to pursue higher education and
competitively play the sport I loved.
When I arrived in the United States ready to participate in Division I basketball,I voiced my interest in
chemistry. However, conversations with student-athletes further along in their programs left me with the impression
that the intense demands for a STEM degree were conflicting with an athlete's schedule.Nobody told me it was
impossible, but nobody reassured me it was doable either.
I set out intending to major in chemistry anyway and signed up for as many science classes as I could. But as
the terms wore on,I had to'delay taking certain courses as it became increasingly difficult to fit multiple 3-hour
labs into my schedule. When I could not complete enough chemistry coursework by the end of my second year to
maintain athletic eligibility,I declared German as a major instead.
Still,I kept up with my chemistry classes, focusing on courses I'd need for admission into a chemistry
graduate program. It wasn't easy, however. At a time when winning games was crucial,I had to do something
equally important:pass my exams.Sitting on the team bus,I studied class notes and tackled problem sets, feeling
conflicted about whether to prioritize my performance on the court or my academic work. The experience was
stressful, but it allowed me to practice time management and learn how to balance competing demands.
I realized then that rather than feeling embarrassed about not following a traditional path,I should instead
celebrate that I had gained other skills, including proactive planning, resolution, and time management. These tools
have helped me navigate (a research environment, and also life in general.

The Body Mass Index (BMI),calculated by dividing weight by height squared, can be used to classify
individuals as underweight, normal, overweight,or obese. While large-scale studies sometimes associate high BMI
with increased risks of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease and typeⅡdiabetes, its reliability as an individual health
indicator is increasingly questioned.
A primary criticism is that BMI fails to differentiate between fat, muscle, and bone.Consequently, muscular
athletes may be categorized as overweight despite low body fat, while individuals with a"normal"BMI might
exhibit warning signs like high blood pressure. Moreover, the indicator originated primarily from data on white
males, leading to potential misclassification among diverse ethnic groups, particularly women of color.Research
indicates that nearly half of those labeled overweight and a quarter of those considered obese based on BMI
actually demonstrate normal cardiovascular health condition.
Beyond its technical shortcomings, the social and psychological impacts of BMI categorization are concerning.
Shame attached to a high BMI can elevate stress hormones, which may worsen appetite and create a harmful cycle
of stress and eating.Additionally, some patients report that their medical complaints are overlooked once they are
labeled overweight.
Despite these flaws,BMI persists due to its simplicity and ease of use in clinical and public health settings.
However, alternative measures are gaining attention.Indicators such as waist circumference (or the Body
Roundness Index (BRD can better predict risks of chronic diseases.Advanced tools dike MRI scans offer precise fat
distribution analysis but remain less accessible.
Ultimately, health.cannot be reduced to a single number.Experts emphasize that well-being is complex,
influenced by nutrition,physical activity,mental health,and genetic factors.As one researcher notes,there is no
single "healthy"body type-a truth reflected in the varied figures of Olympic athletes. Thus, while BMI may
offer a broad population-level glimpse,it should not be viewed as a definitive indicator of personal health.
28.According to the passage, what is amajor shortcoming of BMI in assessing an individual's health?
A.It ignores the influence of diet.
B.It can't distinguish muscle from fat.
C.It overlooks gender difference.
D.It overestimates the risks for the elderly.
2%Why is BMI still widely used despite its shortcomings?
A.It's supported by long-term diverse studies.
B.It's regularly updated for accuracy.
C.It accurately predicts chronic disease risks.
D.It's simple and convenient for basic use.
30.What can be inferred from the mention of Olympic athletes in the last paragraph?
A.Fitness matters more than weight.
B.Athletes shouldn't use BMI for training.
C.Different body types can be healthy.
D.BMI is inaccurate for active individuals.
英语试卷第4页共8页
31.Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage?
A.Waist circumference is completely reliable
B.BMI can be used, but health is multidimensional.
C BMI should be replaced by advanced tools like MRI scans.
D.Overweight patients feel ashamed to report their medical complaints.

In a groundbreaking development for long-duration spaceflight,China's Tiangong space station has introduced
a specialized oven, enabling astronauts to enjoy hot, freshly prepared meals like never before. This innovation
marks a significant step beyond the traditional pre-packaged space food, focusing on both the nutritional and
psychological well-being of crew members.
The newly delivered oven, which functions similarly to an air fryer,is designed specifically for the
microgravity environment. In a released video, astronauts are seen securing chicken wings in a special grill cage
and placing it into a small compartment. The device provides consistent and smokeless baking without overloading
the station's power grid ()-a critical consideration for orbital outposts like Tiangong and the Intemational
Space Station (ISS)that rely on strict fire safety agreements. The "sweet spot"for cooking chicken wings was
found to be 28 minutes under these unique conditions.
This achievement has been compared to a 2019 experiment on the International Space Station (ISS),where
astronauts used a Zero G oven to bake cookies. While that test demonstrated that baking in space takes longer than
on Earth,China's oven is not a temporary experiment. It has been fully integrated into Tiangong's systems and
certified for up to 500 uses, indicating its role as a permanent facility aimed at improving the quality of life in
space.
Experts like Kang Guohua,a professor of aerospace engineering, emphasize that comforts such as hot meals
are vital for keeping astronauts psychologically "grounded"during extended missions. The ability to prepare
familiar and flavorful food not only enhances morale()but also supports crew cohesion and performance.
The introduction of this oven reflects China's broader advancement in sustainable space habitation, where
technology meets human needs in an extreme environment. It reflects a shift in space station design from mere
survival to decent living, where even a simple "space BBO"can symbolize comfort, innovation, and a touch of
home far above Earth.
32.Why is it particularly important that the oven operates without producing smoke?
A.Smoke affects food taste.
B.Smoke disturbs experiments.
C.Fire safety agreements exist.
D.Astronauts are untrained for smoke
33.What does the comparison between China's oven and the 2019 ISS cookie-baking experiment imply?
A China's oven can be permanent
B.Both studied microgravity's effect.
C.China's technology is far more advanced.
D.The ISS oven aimed for long-term use but failed.
34.According to the passage, what is a key function of the oven besides cooking?
A.It provides backup power.
B.It provides mental comfort.
C It tests plant growth in space.
D.It recycles water from cooking.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A The ISS is falling behind in culinary technology.
B Chinese astronauts are the first to barbecue in space.
C.Safety must be prioritized over comfort in food preparation.
D.An oven improves technology and living comfort in space.
