I’m Jack a sophomore whose life flipped upside down last month.
Weekdays once hummed with routine: 6:30 a.m. alarms, Mom’s blueberry oatmeal, biking to school past dog walkers. English with Ms. Hernandez was my anchor — her tattered To Kill a Mockingbird taught me stories reveal truths. After school, basketball glued me to Tyler, my best friend; we dreamed of regional finals glory.
Then Mom texted during class: Dad’s in the hospital, heart attack. He’d be out of work for months, and his mechanic shop paid our bills. I quit the team for a 5 a.m. grocery store job. Tyler yelled, “We’re two weeks from finals!” We stopped speaking.
Now I stock shelves till 7:30, bike to school reeking of detergent, then rush to the hospital. Dad jokes about my “fancy job” while I read him sports news, but by 8 p.m., I’m too drained for homework. Grades slipped; Ms. Hernandez noticed, but pride silenced me.
Last Saturday, Dad and I watched our team lose the finals. Tyler, off his game, missed the winning layup (上篮) — staring into the camera like he sought me. “Basketball’s about showing up,” Dad said.
This morning, I texted Tyler: Sorry. Talk? I told Ms. Hernandez everything. “Detours teach you to keep going,” she said, giving me her Mockingbird. Tyler held a ball at his locker: “Coach saved your spot.” The trophy can wait. Some things — friendship, finding yourself — are worth the mess.
4. What changed Jack’s routine last month?
A. He failed the English exam.
B. His father had a heart attack.
C. He quit the basketball team.
D. His family moved to a new place.
5. Why did Jack stop speaking to Tyler?
A. Tyler laughed at his part-time job.
B. They argued about the regional finals.
C. Jack quit the team before the important game.
D. Tyler missed the winning layup in the finals.
6. What can we learn about Ms. Hernandez?
A. She is strict with her students.
B. She gave Jack a new storybook.
C. She noticed Jack’s falling grades.
D. She forced Jack to talk about his problems.
7. What does the underlined word “Detours” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Unexpected difficulties.
B. Interesting experiences.
C. Important decisions.
D. Wonderful dreams.
B 5. C 6. C 7. A

根据第三段中“Then Mom texted during class: Dad’s in the hospital, heart attack. He’d be out of work for months, and his mechanic shop paid our bills. I quit the team for a 5 a.m. grocery store job.(然而,那天妈妈在课堂上发来短信:爸爸住院了,心脏病发作。他将数月无法工作,而他的汽修店是我们家的经济支柱。为了挑起生活的重担,我退出了篮球队,转而在一家杂货店做起了凌晨5点上班的工作。)”可知,杰克的父亲心脏病发作使杰克上个月的生活发生了改变。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“I quit the team for a 5 a.m. grocery store job. Tyler yelled, “We’re two weeks from finals!”
根据上文“I told Ms. Hernandez everything. “Detours teach you to keep going,” she said, giving me her Mockingbird. Tyler held a ball at his locker: “Coach saved your spot.” The trophy can wait. Some things — friendship, finding yourself — are worth the mess.(我把一切都告诉了埃尔南德斯老师。“Detours教会你如何继续前行,”她说着,把她的《Mockingbird》送给了我。泰勒在他的储物柜旁拿着一个篮球:“教练给你留了位置。”奖杯可以等一等。有些东西——比如友谊、自我发现——值得经历这些波折。)”可知,杰克把自己的困难都告诉了埃尔南德斯女士,后者安慰杰克说:“这些困难波折教会你如何继续前行。”故Detours意思是“意外的困难”。故选A。
C
Evolution(进化) can bring extraordinary makeovers (变革). Today’s songbirds evolved from the wingless dinosaurs that wandered millions of years ago. But some creatures seem to be unchanged—in other words escape natural selection. The coelacanth, a modern-day fish, looks almost the same as its 410-million-year-old fossils.
Scientists have long wondered how these species (物种) do so. It has been assumed that natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for average qualities (stabilizing selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities(directional selection)that would cause a species to change.
But a study published in the National Academy of Sciences USA conflicts with this idea, showing that evolution constantly offers different qualities to those seemingly unchanging animals to improve short-term survival. In the long term, though, “all that evolution cancels out (相互抵消) and leads to no change,” says the study’s lead author, James Stroud.
Stroud and his colleagues studied lizards (蜥蜴); all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of lizard groups every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes (脚趾头), noting which individuals survived. He saw clearer evidence of directional selection: some lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier toes, survived better.
“The study offers a good explanation,” says Tadashi Fukami, an ecologist studying evolution at Stanford University. Many new qualities are evolving in the short term, but they don’t provide a crucial advantage over the long term. In other words, species staying unchanged may simply have found the best possible combination of qualities for lasting success in their environment. So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.
8. Why does the author mention the “coelacanth fish” in paragraph 1?
A. To show the power of evolution. B. To add evidence to natural selection.
C. To give an example of unchanged species. D. To prove species’ extraordinary makeovers.
9. What’s the focus of paragraph 2?
A. Unsolved mysteries. B. A common belief.
C. A sharp contrast. D. Unique Characteristics.
10. How did Stroud conduct his research?
A. By analyzing lizard fossils. B. By tracking research objects.
C. By explaining stabilizing selection. D. By categorizing(分类) qualities of lizards.
11. What will Stroud probably do in the future?
A. Make trips to visit lizard experts. B. Summarize average features of lizards.
C. Reveal the best combinations of qualities. D. Examine lizards under extreme conditions.
C 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据第一段中的“But some creatures seem to be unchanged — in other words, escape natural selection. The coelacanth, a modern-day fish, looks almost the same as its 410-million-year-old fossils.(但有些生物似乎没有变化——换句话说,逃避了自然选择。腔棘鱼,一种现代鱼类,看起来几乎和它4.1亿年前的化石一样。)”可知,作者提到“腔棘鱼”为了举一个“未发生变化的物种”的例子。故选C。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Scientists have long wondered how these species (物种) do so. It has been assumed that natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for average qualities(stabilizing selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities(directional selection)that would cause a species to change.(长期以来,科学家们一直想知道这些物种是如何做到这一点的。人们一直认为,自然选择通过选择平均特征(稳定选择)而不是选择会导致物种变化的更极端特征(定向选择)来使一些物种保持不变。)”可知,整段核心围绕这一“普遍认知”展开,因此段落重点是一种常见观点。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Stroud and his colleagues studied lizards (蜥蜴); all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of lizard groups every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes (脚趾头), noting which individuals survived.(Stroud和他的同事研究了蜥蜴,这些蜥蜴在2000万年的时间里都相对没有变化。研究人员每六个月捕捉一次蜥蜴群体的成员,持续了三年。他们测量了每只蜥蜴的头部大小、腿长、体重和身高,以及它粘性脚趾的大小,并记录下哪些个体存活了下来。)”可知,Stroud是通过追踪研究对象来进行研究的。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.(那么,当蜥蜴的环境发生更剧烈的变化时会发生什么呢?为了帮助回答这个更大的问题,Stroud仍在前往拜访蜥蜴。)”可推知,Stroud未来可能会研究“环境剧烈变化(极端条件)下的蜥蜴”。故选D。
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest technology topic thanks to the boom (迅速发展) of ChatGPT. The AI-powered chatbot, created by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, has both impressed and shocked people with its ability to answer questions, write essays and even argue legal cases. Its capabilities have also put another topic at the forefront of people’s minds: if, how and when AI might impact their jobs.
The short answer to the question of whether AI will replace some jobs is a big, fat “yes”. Certain roles are more harmed by this than others -especially ones that are highly repetitive or based on very specific instructions or rules that lay out what needs to be done. Tasks that change often and therefore require things like adaptability and changing skills are harder for technology to replace. Jobs with a strong human element - such as being a therapist (治疗专家) - are especially unlikely to be taken over.
The concerns aren’t surprising, says Steve Chase, consulting leader at KPMG U. S. “As with most technological advancements, an initial fear of job loss and displacement among workers is natural.” Similar disruption (混乱) has happened before: for example, the spread of computers, or more advanced and specialized machines in factories. History shows if jobs are lost to new technology, other roles have been created in their place.
“I think at the moment we are quite far from ‘real AI’ in the sense that all the models that we have are about predicting the right response given a set of data. Much of what Al does is to combine existing knowledge with a specific goal in mind,” Dimitris Papanikolaou, a professor of finance, says. “This is quite far from creating new knowledge.”
People working alongside AI, rather than being replaced by it, is therefore a more likely scene for now. AI allows organizations to reshape roles in a way that minimizes time spent on repetitive tasks and maximizes strategic decision - making. So they will likely become a bigger part of everyday working life - potentially sooner rather than later.
12. Who is most likely to be replaced by AI?
A. Architectural designers. B. Data entry professionals.
C. Mental health therapists. D. Skilled businessman.
13. Why are computers mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To praise their spread speed. B. To emphasize their impact on AI.
C. To highlight their importance. D. To explain their similarity to Al.
14. What does Papanikolaou think of AI?
A. It is efficient in reaching goals.
B It provides useless knowledge.
C. It is limited in certain ways.
D. It helps businesses minimize employee numbers.
15. Which can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. A guide to chatbot development B. The future of intelligent machines
C. How will AI influence your career? D. When can AI meet customer demand?
B 13. D 14. C 15. C
根据文章第二段“Certain roles are more harmed by this than others — especially ones that are highly repetitive or based on very specific instructions or rules that lay out what needs to be done. (某些职位受到的影响比其他职位更大——尤其是那些高度重复或基于非常具体的指令或规则来确定需要做什么的职位。)”可推测出那些工作高度重复的人更容易被人工智能取代,而数据录入专业人员的工作内容通常是重复性的,因此他们最有可能被人工智能取代。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Similar disruption has happened before: for example, the spread of computers, or more advanced and specialized machines in factories. (之前也发生过类似的混乱:例如,电脑或工厂里更先进和更专业的机器的普及。)”可知,这句话中的“Similar disruption”意思是“类似的混乱”,说明电脑在工厂中的普及带来的混乱与人工智能可能带来的混乱是相似的,所以第三段提到电脑是为了解释它们与人工智能的相似性。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。文章第四段提到Papanikolaou说“I think at the moment we are quite far from ‘real AI’ in the sense that all the models that we have are about predicting the right response given a set of data. Much of what Al does is to combine existing knowledge with a specific goal in mind, ‘This is quite far from creating new knowledge’.

Five minutes later, he came out talking on the cellphone with someone and hurriedly walked out of the cafe without looking back.

Having made the decision, Mark quickly grabbed the iPad and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Ella’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Mark rushed to his bedroom. Inside his room, he couldn’t wait to take out the piece of beauty from the bag. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his dream iPad for free. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Ella came in, telling him, “Mark, you cannot keep the iPad. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the iPad.” Mark said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Ella said, “Now you are lying. Oh dear! When have you turned so dishonest?”
Then Ella noticed a phone number on the back of the iPad. “This may be the man’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? He must be worried and sad about losing his iPad. We will talk to him and ask him to come and take it back.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

When he thought how worried and sad the young man would be at the loss of his iPad, he was full of guilt and shame. After a long and restless night, the next morning, he was determined to return the iPad to the owner. After school, he told Ella, “You’re right. I can’t keep it for my own. I am going to phone the owner.”
Ella was very happy to hear that. Back home, they immediately dialed the number on the back. A young man answered the phone. Mark asked, “Have you lost an iPad? I’m Mark. I found your iPad. Can you come and get it?” “Yes!” the man replied excitedly. Then he expressed his gratitude repeatedly. Ten minutes later, he was at the same cafe to meet Mark and Ella. Handing back the iPad to him and seeing his smile, Mark felt relieved and happy about his final decision. Because he also found back something precious that he had almost lost and realized that honesty was indeed the best policy.

I’m Jack, a sophomore whose life flipped upside down last month.

6. What can we learn about Ms. Hernandez?
A. She is strict with her students.
B. She gave Jack a new storybook.
C. She noticed Jack’s falling grades.
D She forced Jack to talk about his problems.
7. What does the underlined word “Detours” in the last paragraph probably mean?

Evolution(进化) can bring extraordinary makeovers (变革). Today’s songbirds evolved from the wingless dinosaurs that wandered millions of years ago. But some creatures seem to be unchanged—in other words, escape natural selection.
A It is efficient in reaching goals.
B. It provides useless knowledge.
C. It is limited in certain ways.
D. It helps businesses minimize employee numbers.
15. Which can be the most suitable title for the text?
A A guide to chatbot development B. The future of intelligent machines
C. How will AI influence your career? D. When can AI meet customer demand?
