Mr. Thompson listened attentively and then took over the guitar. He played the song that Tim performed in the competition. Such wonderful music left Tim shocked. Before Tim could say a word, Mr. Thompson proposed to give him free music lessons. Tim agreed happily. Over the following months, with Mr. Thompson’s encouragement and guidance, Tim made rapid progress. With skills and confidence improving, Tim recorded his music and shared it online. People were drawn to his music, and he won lots of applause. A music producer was deeply impressed by Tim’s talent and decided to cooperate with him. So Tim left his hometown, walking closer to his dream.
Two years later, Tim returned to his hometown for his own concert. He went to Mr. Thompson’s house and knocked at his door excitedly, hoping to invite him to the concert. However, Tim got no response. He then was told that Mr. Thompson had moved for a long time. At the live concert, Tim performed a song specially for Mr. Thompson. When the last note was played, he stood up straight and took a bow, showing his sincere gratitude to his teacher. Nobody noticed an old man, in the last row, clapping hands for the excellent player. And that’s Mr. Thompson, smiling with tears of joy shining in his eyes.

In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.

My roommate Lily was well organised, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lily came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming. “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lily answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart.
Slowly. I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so lost in my work that I even didn’t notice Lily had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression a kind of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Lily and I stayed roommates for the rest of the college years. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together, giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

Almost all of us have a friend, who can eat anything and eat as much as an elephant yet never gain weight. So why can your friend get away with eating what he/she wants and not get fat?
First and foremost, it has something to do with Genetics (基因学): high basal metabolic rate(BMR) (高基础代谢率). When we are resting, our body spends some energy for basic activities like breathing and pumping of the heart. So those with high BMR burn more calories at rest as compared to those who have low BMR. As a result, these individuals don’t put on weight despite eating large amounts of foods.
To show that it is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seems to be influenced by genetic factors. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target (针对) the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
Other reasons such as bad eating and living habits as well as illnesses also contribute to weight gain. The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who are overweight continues to grow.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects. However, it takes a long time to develop and test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy , balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
32.Why does the author ask a question in Paragraph 1?
A.To stress his doubts. B.To compare different results.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To express his unhappiness.
33.What might be the key reason for getting fat?
A.Bad living habits. B.Genetic factors.
C.Bad eating habits. D.Serious illnesses.
34.What did the scientists do with the mice during their experiment?
A.They gave them the same experimental conditions.
B.They fed them on a special diet with only fat.
C.They studied the genetic structure of their bodies.
D.They divided them into two groups at the beginning.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Current Weight-loss Medicines Have Bad Effects
B.Controlling Weight Gain Is Hard but Possible
C.Knowing Your BMR Helps Lose More Weight
D.Genes Play a Role in Deciding Your Weight

If you miss one of the old friends you’ve lost touch with and think about reaching out to them, you may worry about whether it’ll be just like old times, or uncomfortable and awkward. Here are some ways to help you avoid any awkwardness while reconnecting with an old friend.
Reach out through social media. Connect with them through social media, text message or other means if you’re too nervous to make a phone call or to begin a meet up. Follow up on one of their most recent posts. 36
Show some love. If you’re really happy to connect with your old friend, make it a point to communicate that to them. 37 Sincere warmth can help lessen some of the awkwardness that may build up in a relationship.
38 Start conversation by bringing up a fun time you shared. It will transport you both back to that moment when you were close and help smooth over the “What are you up to now?” conversations that sound too rigid (死板).
Display your interest. As you chat with your friend, try to pay attention and ask follow-up questions. 39 Empathizing (共鸣) with them can help you connect with them and get to know who they are today.
Move past conflicts. Don’t talk a lot about your conflicts or the reasons why your friendship became less close. If it happens to come up naturally down the line, then feel free to address any possible hurt feelings. 40 In the beginning, just focus on what you had in common and the good times you shared together.
A.Bring back a happy memory.
B.Make detailed plans for the future.
C.But better avoid taking the risk too soon.
D.Update your friend on everything going on in your life.
E.This shows you’re interested in what they’re sharing with you.
F.Be warm with them and let them know how much it means to you.
G.Then starting conversation about what they’re up to will be a natural thing.

There lived a ten-year-old boy named Tim in a small town. Though born in a family that struggled to make ends meet, Tim was a bright and lively boy, having a strong passion for music. He held a dream that he could perform music for many people at his own concert in the future.
One day, word reached Tim about a local music competition, the prize of which was a full scholarship to a highly regarded music academy. This was an opportunity that seemed like a golden ticket to his dream, so he made the decision to participate. After hurrying to sign up for the competition, he made a plan to practice, day in and day out, using an old guitar that had been passed down from his grandfather.
When the day of the competition finally arrived, Tim felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement. He stepped onto the stage and poured all his heart, soul, and love into the music. He felt rather satisfied with his performance.
During the following days, he waited for the result anxiously. However, he didn’t win. He completely broke down, feeling all his painstaking efforts were for nothing. A deep sense of discouragement settled over him. His parents knew that his skills are not good enough but didn’t know how to comfort him. Tim was always sitting, playing his old guitar in the park, with nobody to talk with.
A few weeks later, a man named Mr. Thompson moved into the neighborhood. Little did anyone know that Mr. Thompson was a guitar master who once shared the spotlight on stages with well-known bands but now sought the peace of a quiet life. One day, he happened to spot Tim sitting alone, playing the guitar with a disappointed expression. He approached Tim and started a conversation. Tim opened up to him about his experience in the competition.

27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B.Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens

B.Because she hated herself for being so messy.
C.Because Lily required her to do so.
D.Because she was scared by Lily’s anger.
31.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Hard Work Pays Off B.Learning to Be Roommates
C.My Friend Lily D.How to Be Organised?

【答案】17.B 18.C 19.A 20.C
W: Hello, everyone. I know most of you want to be singers, but I’m afraid to say, it’s all hard work. However, the rewards are beyond anything else, so it’s a fair deal. If you have got a good voice, then treasure it. Don’t be anxious if it does get hurt — it’s impressive how it’ll recover. The important thing is to use it. Get out the campus and take every chance you can to sing in public. This experience will also help to feed and build your ambition to go on, to be better. Singing on stage to an appreciative audience is as good as life gets. And for those who don’t like public performance, if you’ve got a good voice — then maybe you’ll be like my friend Diana. Although she got over most of her anxiety about performing in public a few years ago, she still prefers studio singing, performing directly for CDs and so on. Nobody really sees her outside her home and the studio. Even warming up her voice for a recording performance is something she does in private, making noises while sitting in her car outside the studio building. I think she’s alarmed a few passers-by in her time!

24.What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy?
A.Inspiring and practical. B.Tiring yet delightful.

根据文章第一段中“I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing. (那时我拍了很多照片,当你冲洗你的胶卷时,你会得到彩色照片,这一事实让我很高兴,它冻结了那些珍贵的时刻,温柔地鼓励了我的爱好和为冲洗而支付的费用。)”可推断,对于作者小时候拍照这件事,作者觉得这是令人兴奋且值得的。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. (这些年来不断增长的压力把相机从我的枕头旁推到了角落里的盒子里。)”可知,作者面临的压力越来越大,这使得作者停止了拍照。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. (对我来说,这个房间代表了我是如何找到幸福的:通过重新连接我搁置的年轻的自己,通过在我的生活中为快乐留出空间,通过创造一个允许快乐机会的环境。)”可知,作者通过重新开始拍照,在繁忙的日程中获得了乐趣。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
C
28.How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A.By analyzing causes. B.By giving some examples.
C.By showing the difference. D.By describing a process.
29.What made Lily so angry one evening?
A.She heard the author shouting loud.
B.She saw the author’s shoes under her bed.
C.She got the news that her grandma was ill.
D.She couldn’t find her books anymore.
30.Why did the author clean up the room?
A.Because she wanted to show her care for Lily.
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.A 31.B
根据第一段中“My roommate Lily was well organised, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. (我的室友Lily非常有条理,而我没有。她的每样东西都有固定的位置,而我的东西总是藏在某个地方。她甚至给所有的东西都贴上了标签。我总是到处找东西。随着时间的推移,Lily变得越来越整洁,而我则越来越杂乱。)”可知,第一段主要描述了作者和室友Lily在组织习惯上的不同,Lily很有条理,而作者则很杂乱。所以作者是通过叙述两人之间的差异来组织这一段的内容的,故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Soon, I heard her screaming. ‘Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!’ (很快,我听到她尖叫:‘把你的鞋拿走!为什么会在我的床下!’)”可知,让Lily发怒的是她看见作者的鞋子在她的床下面,故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart. (显然,这是她不应该独自经历的事情。突然间,一股温暖的同情之情在我心中升起。)”可知,作者打扫房间是因为她同情Lily,想要表达自己对她的关心,故选A。
31.主旨大意题。根据全文内容及最后一段中“We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together, giving in, cleaning up and holding on. (我们并不总是一致,但我们学会了共同生活的关键,学会妥协、整理和坚持。)”可知,本文主要讲述了作者与自己的室友Lily的生活习惯很不相同,后来她们两个人之间发生的一场冲突让作者学会了关心室友,学会了如何与室友相处,因此最好的标题应该是B选项“Learning to Be Roommates (学会做室友)”,故选B。
D
【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.D
根据第一段“Almost all of us have a friend, who can eat anything and eat as much as an elephant yet never gain weight. So why can your friend get away with eating what he/she wants and not get fat?(几乎我们所有人都有一个朋友,他可以吃任何东西,吃得和大象一样多,但从不发胖。那么,为什么你的朋友可以吃他/她想吃的东西而不发胖呢?)”可推知,作者在第一段问了一个问题是为了引入话题。故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“First and foremost, it has something to do with Genetics(基因学): high basal metabolic rate(BMR)(高基础代谢率).(首先,这与遗传学有关:高基础代谢率(BMR))”可知,发胖的主要原因是遗传因素。故选B。
根据第三段“Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise.(尽管两组老鼠吃的食物和运动量相同,但一些老鼠体重增加,而另一些老鼠保持苗条)”可知,在实验中,科学家们给了老鼠们相同的实验条件。故选A。
根据第二段“First and foremost, it has something to do with Genetics(基因学): high basal metabolic rate(BMR)(高基础代谢率). When we are resting, our body spends some energy for basic activities like breathing and pumping of the heart. So those with high BMR burn more calories at rest as compared to those who have low BMR. As a result, these individuals don’t put on weight despite eating large amounts of foods.(首先,这与遗传学有关:高基础代谢率(BMR)。
