How to make a good first impression at high school?
High school’s starting soon, and I want to make a good first impression. I’m a little afraid because I’m short and weigh a bit too much and sometimes people make fun of me for that. Can anyone give me any advice on how to act during my first weeks, or what kind of clothes to wear, etc.?

I really suggest being kind and outgoing. It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won’t get any where being shy.
Your weight really doesn’t matter. If you’re really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don’t worry about your weight, and don’t let it get you down. “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Remember that. Concentrate on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don’t wear the ‘in’ clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they’re very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

Take it from me, the best thing for you to do is be nice to everyone. If someone isn’t nice to you, don’t take it personally. Try out for sports and clubs, and you’ll soon make new friends.

When you get a less desirable gift. people like to say, “It’s the thought that counts.” But with my mother’s gifts, you’ve really got to wonder, “What thought was that exactly?”
My mother’s presents are never given to be mean; they are always presented with wide-eyed, innocent excitement. “Do you like it?” she always asks expectantly, and we nod our heads while we try to figure out what “it” is. Over the years, my mother’s Christmas presents have become well-known for the amusement — and sometimes horror — that they could cause.
For instance, my mother once gave me a pair of bright red underwear, the kind that you see little girls wearing under their fancy dresses in old-timey pictures. Several years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lovingly crafted, odd interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as instructed. I soon discovered that few things terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet.
Someone asked me what I hoped to get for this Christmas from my mother. “Oh nothing,” I explained. You don’t “hope” for gifts from her. They’re coming — whether you want them or not.
But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic love that comes with my mother’s gifts is the same love with which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alone. She has always loved me for my boring personality unconditionally, and I — with all my eyerolls and sighs by the Christmas tree — love her unconditionally as well. There’s no better gift to give a child than the knowledge that they can be weird or awkward and still feel unconditionally loved.
24.Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1?
A.To express concern about the gifts. B.To point out her mother’s lack of taste.
C.To suggest her mom’s thoughtlessness. D.To stress the strange nature of the gifts.
25.Which of the following best describes the clay sculpture?
A.Lovely. B.Realistic. C.Unimaginative. D.Horrifying.
26.How does the author feel about her mothers gifts according to paragraph 4?
A.Hoping they will improve. B.Amused by their strangeness.
C.Accepting they’re unavoidable. D.Determined to prevent their arrival.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Gift ideas for loved ones. B.Message from mother’s gifts.
C.Art of accepting unwanted gifts. D.Family traditions of giving gifts.

A new study shows that the average size of trees in the Amazon rainforest has been increasing as carbon dioxide (CO2) levels have risen, meaning these larger trees play a more important role in determining whether the forest can remain a carbon sink that stores CO2.
Until now, how forests will react to a changing climate (气候) is an open question. For example, one hypothesis (假说) is that larger trees will fall in number because they are more subject to climate-related events. Understanding this is important for models of the future climate, as forests play a major role in taking up huge amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere, locking it away to slow global (全球的) warming.
Adriane Esquivel-Muelbert, a researcher from the University of Cambridge, and her coworkers, have been measuring the size of trees in 188 plots with an average area of 12,000 square metres across the Amazon basin for up to 30 years. During that time, CO2 levels in the atmosphere have risen by nearly a fifth.
“What we’re following is a given area in the forest and the average tree size there is bigger, meaning that the trees can store more carbon in that space than they could in the past,” says Esquivel-Muelbert.
Normally, the average size of trees in a healthy forest would remain the same, as young trees take the place of fallen big trees and grow. However, the researchers believe that the increase in CO2 has allowed larger trees to grow more quickly. This means that large trees now play a key role in carbon storage, and losing them would have a marked impact on the forest’s ability to lock up CO2.
“The important finding is that CO2 has been increasing tree growth, and in many ways that is reassuring, because wood is a significant carbon sink,” says Peter Etchells at Durham University, UK. “However, we need to continue studying how trees react to both CO2 and other environmental changes to better understand the future of our forests.”
28.How do rising CO2 levels affect the trees in the Amazon according to the new study?
A.They grow more rapidly.
B.They remain the same size.
C.They see a fall in number.
D.They cause global warming
29.What might happen if large trees were lost from the Amazon rainforest?
A.Carbon storage would rise markedly.
B.The forest would store less CO2.
C.Young trees would be badly impacted.
D.Climate-related events would end.
30.What does the underlined word “reassuring” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Plain. B.Informal.
C.Confusing. D.Comforting.
31.What does Peter Etchells suggest?
A.Applying the result into practice.
B.Carrying out further research.
C.Updating the local environment.
D.Planting trees in the Amazon.

Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st or January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes, and they may drink champagne at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, the dolls are burned to show that the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh.
Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year. Other NewYear traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at NewYear. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck, but to get good luck for a whole year, you have to eat 365 of them!
32.Which activity is common in typical Western New Year celebrations?
A.Making dolls from old clothes. B.Eating grapes at midnight.
C.Drinking champagne at parties. D.Watching the sunrise early.
33.The burning of dolls in Ecuador aims to ________.
A.create beautiful fireworks B.clean up old things at home
C.end bad things from the past D.welcome the first sunlight
34.What do Spanish and American New Year traditions have in common?
A.Both use fire to celebrate. B.Both happen at sunrise.
C.Both involve special foods. D.Both require eating 365 items.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Western countries celebrate New Year with parties.
B.Cultures have unique ways to celebrate the new year.
C.New Year celebrations happen at different times worldwide.
D.People follow special traditions to bring good luck in the new year.

Jane and her younger brother Tom were still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock! She quickly put on a coat and ran to answer the phone, and on the other end came the warm greeting. “Good morning!”
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
“Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend?” Jane said. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.” Her father called.
Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday?! Their parents paid a lot for their family, especially their mother.
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.

Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. “Tom, wake up! Today is Mum’s birthday. Dad has ordered a cake for her, and we should also do something to make it special.” Tom jumped out of bed excitedly. They first started to clean the house. Jane swept the floor and wiped the tables, while Tom put away the dirty clothes and made the beds. After that, they decided to make a card for Mum. They drew beautiful pictures of their family on the card and wrote some warm words like “Thank you, Mum. We love you forever”. Just then, the doorbell rang. It was the cake delivery. They put the cake on the table and waited for their mother.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Their mother was completely surprised. She saw the clean house, the beautiful card and the delicious cake. Tears welled up in her eyes. “You are such wonderful kids!” she said. They hugged their mother tightly. Then they sat around the table, cut the cake and shared it happily. Jane and Tom told their mother about all the things they had done that day. Their mother was really touched and felt that all her hard work was worth it. This birthday would surely be an unforgettable one for the whole family.

M: I think it’s the fact that they can erupt at any time.
W: Yes.
M: But not all volcanoes are dangerous killers.
W: Really?
M: Take Mount Etna in Sicily for example. It’s called the “Friendly Giant”, not because it’s big — though it is — but because its lava (火山岩浆) moves very slowly. This gives people time to escape. It’s not a killer volcano.
W: Oh, I didn’t know that about its lava.
M: It’s true. Also, people have recorded the number of deaths caused by Mount Etna for over 3,000 years, and it has only killed 73 people in all.
W: Wow!
M: Volcanoes are always changing. On the site of Mount Fuji in Japan, there were 2 other volcanoes there before the present one.
W: Amazing!
M: Mount Fuji is actually a very popular place for tourists, including the Japanese. It has about 400,000 visitors a year.

【答案】17.A 18.C 19.A 20.B
【原文】
Good morning, everyone. For anyone considering going on a cycling tour, the first thing to consider is safety, so it’s very important indeed to consider what you wear. Wear something that can be easily seen, a red jacket, for example. You know many accidents happen because drivers simply fail to see the cyclist. Second, don’t try to ride too far and too fast; take your time. If you feel tired, stop and rest. Remember that the joy of cycling is the ride itself. Get close to nature and see things you wouldn’t normally see if you’re traveling by car or bus. And if you’re planning your journey in summer, take plenty of water. It is wise to drink at least one liter of water every hour. If the weather is not warm enough, make sure you take some warm clothes to put on when you stop riding. Even in cold weather, you can become very warm when you go riding. It is very easy to catch a cold or even get a fever when you stop.

【答案】24.D 25.D 26.C 27.B
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者母亲送的礼物总是很奇怪,但这些礼物背后是母亲无条件的爱。
24.推理判断题。根据第一段“When you get a less desirable gift. people like to say, “It’s the thought that counts.” But with my mother’s gifts, you’ve really got to wonder, “What thought was that exactly?” (当你收到一份不太理想的礼物时,人们喜欢说:“心意才是最重要的。”但是当我收到母亲的礼物时,你真的会忍不住想:“那到底是什么想法呢?”)”可知,作者在第一段提出问题是为了强调母亲送的礼物很奇怪。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Several years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lovingly crafted, odd interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as instructed. I soon discovered that few things terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet.
根据第四段“Someone asked me what I hoped to get for this Christmas from my mother. “Oh nothing,” I explained. You don’t “hope” for gifts from her. They’re coming — whether you want them or not. (有人问我希望今年圣诞节从母亲那里得到什么礼物。“哦,没什么,”我解释道。你不会对她的礼物抱有“希望”。不管你想要与否,它们都会来的。)”可知,作者觉得母亲的礼物是不可避免的,无论自己喜不喜欢都会收到。故选C。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic love that comes with my mother’s gifts is the same love with which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alone. She has always loved me for my boring personality unconditionally, and I — with all my eyerolls and sighs by the Christmas tree — love her unconditionally as well. There’s no better gift to give a child than the knowledge that they can be weird or awkward and still feel unconditionally loved.

【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.B
【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了剑桥大学的研究,大气中的二氧化碳浓度上升会加快亚马逊热带雨林的树木生长、增强其碳汇能力。
28.细节理解题。根据第一段“A new study shows that the average size of trees in the Amazon rainforest has been increasing as carbon dioxide (CO2) levels have risen (一项新的研究表明,随着二氧化碳水平的上升,亚马逊雨林中树木的平均大小一直在增加)”可知,大气中的二氧化碳浓度上升会导致亚马逊热带雨林的树木整体的生长速度加快。故选A。
29.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段最后一句“This means that large trees now play a key role in carbon storage, and losing them would have a marked impact on the forest’s ability to lock up CO2. (这意味着大树如今在碳储存中起着关键作用,失去它们将对森林的固碳能力产生显著影响)”可知,如果亚马逊热带雨林的大树消失了,那么森林固碳能力将明显下降。故选B。
30.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“The important finding is that CO2 has been increasing tree growth, and in many ways that is reassuring, because wood is a significant carbon sink (重要的发现是,二氧化碳促进了树木的生长,这在很多方面都令人放心,因为木材是一个重要的碳汇)”可推断,树木生长加快意味着它们能通过光合作用吸收并储存更多的二氧化碳,这对于缓解气候变化来说是一个好消息,因此这件事是令人安心的。划线词reassuring与Comforting (令人宽慰的;安慰的)的意思最接近。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“says Peter Etchells at Durham University, UK. “However, we need to continue studying how trees react to both CO2 and other environmental changes to better understand the future of our forests.” (英国达勒姆大学的彼得·埃切尔斯说:“然而,我们需要继续研究树木对二氧化碳和其他环境变化的反应,以更好地了解我们森林的未来。”)”可知,Peter Etchells建议开展进一步研究工作。故选B。

Other NewYear traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at NewYear.
