Yash Patel was fluent in four languages: English, Hindi, Gujarat, and American Sign Language. However, he believed a fifth should be added to the list: accounting (会计). “Accounting is the language of business,” Patel said. “If you want to do business, you need to know that language, or work with someone who does.”
Patel is about to graduate from the University of South Florida (USF) with a degree in accounting. His journey into accounting began nearly ten years ago when he first recognized the importance of understanding accounting.
Patel’s grandmother owns the Diana Motel in Clearwater. In 2015, struggling to make sense of her tax forms, she turned to Patel for help. “I didn’t understand it, either,” he recalled. “My family owns a business, so I figured I should learn about accounting.”
He then got a degree in accounting from St. Petersburg College. In 2023, he managed to study accounts at USF. To pay for his living costs at USF, Patel started his own business. Using a small business loan (贷款), he bought five second-hand vending machines. He placed two in a private school and three in motels, one of which was owned by his family. After his first year at USF, he sold the business because he didn’t have enough time to manage it.
Soon after, Patel joined Beta AlphaPsi, a professional organization for financial students, which helped him land internships (实习). He remembered his first career fair at USF, where he showed up in jeans and trainers. “The companies didn’t talk to me because I didn’t look professional,” he said. With the help of Beta AlphaPsi, Patel learned how to dress and present himself, which led to internships at Cherry Bekaert and Deloitte.
Looking ahead, Patel plans to complete a Master’s degree in accounting at USF and work in public accounting.
24. What can we learn about Patel from the first paragraph?
A. He has a real feel for languages. B. He can speak five languages.
C. He works as a translator in India. D. He teaches accounting at USF.
25. What made Patel decide to study accounting at first?
A. His interest in banking. B. His family’s business.
C His wish to run a hotel. D. His parents’ expectations.
26. Why did Patel start his own business?
A. To repay his student loan. B. To send money to his grandma.
C. To support himself at college. D. To apply what he learned to life.
27. How did Beta Alpha Psi affect Patel?
A. He got a Master’s degree. B. He set up a national organization.
C. He found a well-paid job. D. He gave more thought to his looks.

Making exercise fun is a challenge for many people who struggle to find the motivation (动机) to work out. But rather than forcing yourself to enjoy running or that gym class you once attended, the solution may lie in something more straightforward — simply choosing exercises that fit your personality, according to a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
To reach their findings, the study’s co-lead author, Flaminia Ronca, a professor in exercise science at University College London, and her coworkers first directed the 132 subjects, aged between 25 and 51 years old, to complete a questionnaire showing their personality types.
The study took a commonly used model that describes someone’s personality, namely outgoing people, quiet worriers, kind helpers, curious explorers, and careful planners. The researchers then ran fitness tests on the subjects and put them into two groups. One group was given an eight-week biking plan, while the control group did 10 minutes a week of stretching (伸展) exercises. Of the 132 subjects, 86 completed both pre- and post-testing either side of these eight weeks.
The study team found that, although fitness improved across all personality types for those who completed the biking and stretching programs, there was a marked difference in enjoyment of exercise. Outgoing people enjoyed the higher-intensity (强度) lab fitness tests, while quiet worries enjoyed the home-based light-intensity workouts.
The study also showed how exercise affected people’s stress levels based on their personality. People who scored high in neuroticism, meaning they feel more anxious, experienced a bigger drop in stress levels compared with other groups.
“I think that’s quite a powerful message to give,” Ronca said. Considering the many benefits of exercise, she hoped their findings would encourage people to find forms of exercise they enjoy, making it easier to stick to a fitness routine and to improve their fitness over time.
28. In what way were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Exercise type. B. Their hobby. C. Their age. D. Health condition.
29. What did the study find about personality?
A. It drives people to achieve dreams. B. It shows similarities in certain ways.
C. It affects the enjoyment of exercise. D. It helps us complete more exercises.
30. What does Ronca intend to explain in the last paragraph?
A. The background of the experiment. B. The application of the findings.
C. The direction of further research. D. The arrangement for daily exercise.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Influence of Exercise on Personality B. The Benefits of the Stretching Program
C. Giving You New Motivation to Exercise D. Matching Workouts to Your Personality
D
Many parents have experienced moments when their child’s behavior makes them feel annoyed and helpless. However, new research suggests that a different solution works better.
A recent study from King’s College London found that responding (回应) to a child’s behavior with warmth and praise can not only improve their behavior but also change how their brain works. The research shows that parenting programs, which focus on positive behavior, can lead to real changes in brain activity in children with behavioral problems.
Researchers studied 78 boys with behavioral problems, aged 5 to 10. These boys, along with a control group of 35 other children, completed a reward(奖励) — learning task while having a brain scan. At the beginning, the boys showed less brain activity in the insula, a part of the brain responsible for expecting rewards, compared to other children.
The families of these boys with behavioral problems then attended a 10 — 12-week parenting program aimed at encouraging warm parenting. After completing the program, the boys were tested again.
The results were striking. Most of the boys showed more brain activity in the insula and other areas responsible for decision-making and learning. They were called “improvers”. The study also found that the parenting program changed how the boys with improved behavior learned from their experiences. They were able to make better decisions and became slower to change their expectations after a good or bad experience. They also became more practical and more aware of the difference between rewards and punishments.
This research highlights the strong influence of positive parenting on children’s behavior and brain development, showing that warmth and patience can create long-term changes in both behavior and the brain.
32. What are the families of the boys with behavioral problems asked to do in the study?
A. Give rewards to researchers. B. Go for a medical check-up.
C. Perform warm parenting. D. Clean up the lab every day.
33. What does the underlined word “striking” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Noticeable. B. Different. C. Endless. D. Alarming.
34. Which is a change that happened to the “improvers”?
A. They learned to work hard at school. B. They managed to keep their promise.
C. They could make well- considered choices. D. They left a bad impression on the scientists.
35. What can be inferred about positive parenting according to the research?
A. It offers a hopeful message to doctors. B. It is a challenging task for every family.
C. It requires teachers to act as a role model. D. It produces a lasting influence on children.

Jane was a 10-year-old girl with messy brown hair. She lived with her hardworking mom, a nurse who often came home late. Jane tried to do everything by herself but always seemed to forget something. Her strict science teacher, Mr. Jeff, often got angry with her for being unprepared.
“Late again Jane!” Mr. Jeff shouted loudly one Monday morning as Jane rushed into class, her shoes untied and books falling from her arms. “Where’s your homework? Still unfinished?”
Jane’s face turned red. “I... I did finish it this time,” she said quietly, searching her bag. Her heart dropped when she pulled out a messy math paper instead. The class laughed.
That night, Jane sat in her room, remembering how embarrassed (尴尬的) she felt “I’ll prove I can do better,” she promised herself. She stayed up late organizing her school things: notes and a homework report, Jane’s mom, coming home late from her nursing job, noticed the extra effort Jane was putting into her schoolwork. She asked Jane to go to bed early. But Jane said. “I really need to do well on this homework. Mr. Jeff has been so strict, and I don’t want to disappoint (使失望) him again.” Her mom nodded, understanding the importance of Jane’s efforts. Finally, everything was ready. Jane set two alarms (闹铃).
Unluckily, the next morning the alarms didn’t ring, because Jane had set them wrongly. Her mom knocked on her door and said, “Jane! The school bus is coming soon!” In a hurry to eat breakfast, brush her teeth, and find her shoes, Jane completely forgot her schoolbag by the door.
When she reached the school gate, Jane suddenly stopped. Her hands were empty. “Oh no! My schoolbag!” she cried. She could already imagine Mr. Jeff’s angry face.

Good morning, everyone. I’m here to share with you a practical way to learn English.
First of all, I immerse myself in the language as much as possible by engaging with English media such as movies, TV shows, podcasts, and music. This method is effective because it exposes me to a variety of accents, colloquialisms, and speaking speeds, which enhances my listening skills and adaptability. Additionally, I practice speaking English aloud and talking to myself about my day or any topic that comes to mind. This practice helps reinforce what I’ve learned and builds confidence in my spoken English. Finally, I make a habit of carrying a notebook with me to set down new words and expressions that I come across, allowing me to review and practice them later.
Thank you for listening.
第二节(满分25分)

【答案】 Just then, Jane saw her mom running towards her with her schoolbag. Her mom held Jane’s schoolbag tightly. “I am just about to leave for work when I notice your schoolbag by the door,” her mom said, handing over the bag. “I know how important it is for you today.” Jane wiped her tears and hugged her mom tightly. “Thank you, Mom!” she said, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. With her schoolbag safely in hand, Jane hurried into the school building. She took a deep breath before entering Mr. Jeff’s classroom.
As Jane walked in, Mr. Jeff looked up and said, “Late and no homework again, Jane?” “Sorry I’m late, Mr. Jeff. I had some trouble with my alarms this morning,” she said, placing her homework on his desk. “My report is here.” Mr, Jeff checked Jane’s homework carefully, and then said, “This is... very complete.” For the first time, his serious face softened. “Good job, Jane.” Jane’s face lit up with joy. She felt a sense of accomplishment she hadn’t felt before. “Thank you, Mr, Jeff,” she said, her confidence growing. From that day on, Jane was more careful and organized, knowing that with effort and support, she could overcome her challenges.

Instead of closed sections, we will have an open office. There will be no walls. Instead, desks will be arranged in groups for each department. The desks in each department will be facing each other in groups of four or sex. We feel this will help us communicate Better. IT will also create a more welcoming environment for customers. The department managers will still have their own offices, and each will have large windows and glass doors to make employees and customers feel welcome to come inside. We are also going to paint the walls and put in new floor. The project will start on september first and should take about thirteen days to complete. We will be moving to the third floor during that period.
