Nelson Mandela once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” I’ve always enjoyed learning new language. So far I’ve learned 11 languages.
German is the first language I started learning completely on my own. I don’t remember clearly why I chose this language to learn, but I remember I had no idea how to learn it. I spent several months reading an old grammar book found in my grandmother’s bookcase. But I quickly lost heart.
Then I saw an advertisement on TV about a language series in 4 languages and decided to give it a go. While using it, I came up with my method: a special technique to absorb (掌握) the basic patterns of any language in a light, natural and fun way. I quickly realized that it was helpful to me.
After using the technique for a year and a half, I met a group of Germans while on vacation. I would always remember their faces as they asked in surprise, “Wie kannst du so gut Deutsch?” This reaction and the resulting special connection were enough to increase my passion (激情) to improve my German. From that moment on, I started reading a lot. The language has become an important part of my life.
The lesson learned: If you find a method that you like and works, you can start learning any language by yourself. There is no best method of learning a language. Find something that is helpful to you. And above all, experiment!
4. What does the author want to show by Nelson Mandela’s words?
A. The skills of mastering new languages.
B. The means of understanding foreigners.
C. The advantage of speaking mother tongues.
D. The importance of learning foreign languages.
5. What did the author most probably think of the old grammar book?
A. Boring. B. Surprising. C. Simple. D. Helpful.
6. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The advertisement on TV.
B. The basic language pattern.
C. The language series in 4 languages.
D. The author’s special learning method.
7. What did the Germans’ words mean in paragraph 4?
A. Could you be a guide for us?
B. Where did you learn German?
C. How can you speak German so well?
D Can you share your way of learning German?
C
In 2010, my mother-in-law gave me her rather simple but graceful, antique “secretary desk”. The desk easily fit into the tiny room at the top of the stairs. I felt so secure, and confident when I sat down and began each writing session. Despite the desk’s appeal, its limited storage capacity meant that I often put file folders and books on the small floor space around me. After each writing session, I painstakingly gathered the tools of the trade and placed them on a nearby shelf until the next session.
A few years into my writing journey, we moved into a bigger home and I acquired my own office. My husband, Bill offered on more than one occasion to buy me a new desk for my office, but I ignored his offer.
One day, we stopped at the local office supply store. Bill found what he thought was the perfect desk for me. “I want to buy this for you, sweetie. My writer needs a bigger desk. ”He hugged me.
“Thanks, but I don’t want a bigger desk!” I said.
“Why don’t you want a bigger desk?” he said. “You must be afraid of something.”
“I’m not afraid of anything,” I said. “Like I said, I really like my little desk. So don’t ask me again.”
He didn’t.
A few weeks later, while working in my new office. I looked around at the folders, books and papers lying all over my office floor but couldn’t find what needed to meet a contest deadline. My heart raced. I looked around my office. The room basically swallowed the tiny desk, making it look slightly out of place. Maybe I did need a bigger desk. Was Bill right? Was I afraid of something?
Unable to write, I pulled c. JoyBell C.’s book of poetry, All Things Dance Like Dragonflies (蜻蜓), from the bookshelf. I flipped through its pages, and her words about faith jumped off the page into my heart. She talked about how she had trained herself to love the feeling of not knowing where she was going, and just trusting that as she opened up her wings and flew off in an unknown direction, things would work out.
At that moment, I recognized that a bigger desk symbolized bigger possibilities, stepping out in faith, and leaving my comfort zone.
8. What was the limitation of the “secretary desk”?
A. It was too old to be functional.
B. It competed with the shelf for room.
C. It prevented the author focusing on writing.
D. It was a bit small in size.
9. When did the author want to buy a new desk?
A. After she was stuck in a mess.
B. When she finished writing a book.
C. When she moved into a bigger house.
D. After she missed an important contest.
10. What was the author afraid of before?
A Unemployment. B. Loss of inspiration.
C. Uncertainty. D. Lack of trust.
11. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. My Writing Journey B. On the Wings of Change
C. My Lifelong Faith D. On the Desk of Fate
D
It’s said that making friends gets harder when you get older. People form their existing (现有的) friendships during childhood or at university. However, new research suggests that’s not what happens. According to a recent survey, the age group that feels least confident in chatting to strangers is those aged 18 to 24. Similarly, it was found that 59% of Millennials (千禧一代) spend more time chatting to friends on social media than they do face to face in person.
The author and expert on friendship, Kate Leaver, said, “Young people are not confident when speaking to strangers not only because they’re afraid of refusal, but also because they’ve really been socially conditioned not to do it. Previous generations have a much stronger sense of community in public and shared spaces. We don’t have as much access (接触的机会) to that because the way we form our modern lives means we are less in touch with our communities. Shared public spaces like parks and libraries — places where people might get close to a stranger — are being shut down.”
Laura, 27, who enjoys the company of her old friends, hates meeting new people. Most of her friends are from university days. “I’m pretty chatty and open when I get to know someone, but during that first meeting, I’m very shy. I get very anxious about what to talk about and worry that people do not understand my sense of humour.”
But not all young people feel the same way. Hayley, always meets people in unusual ways and makes friends with them. “I became good friends with someone who I met on the plane,” she said. “It just shows how you can really connect when you’re offline.”
If you’re comfortable with your present friendship situation, that’s great. But, if you do want to enlarge your social circle, here are some tips. Avoid unpleasant silences by searching for people with common interests — join a book club or a local sports team. If it is too stressful, there are some friendship apps that you can use. Or start a conversation with someone in a public place.
12. What can we learn from the recent survey?
A. Building friendships in university is necessary. B. Teens spend less time with friends than before.
C. Making friends gets harder on social media. D. Young people build relationships with difficulty.
13. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. A public space. B. A stranger.
C. The sense of community. D. The social condition.
14. What problem does Laura have in socializing?
A. She has no sense of humour. B. She fails to contact her old friends.
C. She prefers to make new friends online. D. She is unwilling to get close to new people.
15. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Learning some skills on apps. B. Choosing friends carefully.
C. Joining groups with shared interests. D. Keeping strong ties with old friends.

There were two neighbors living next to each other. One of them was a retired (退休的) teacher and the other was an insurance agent (保险代理人) who had a lot of interest in technology. Both of them had planted different plants in their gardens. The retired teacher was giving a small amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give a full attention to them, while the other neighbor interested in technology, had given a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well.
The retired teacher’s plants were simple but looked good. The insurance agent’s plants were much fuller and greener. One day, during the night, there was a heavy rain and a wind due to a minor storm. Next morning, both of the neighbors came out to see the loss to their gardens. The neighbor who was an insurance agent saw that his plants came off from the roots (根) and were totally destroyed. But, the retired teacher’s plants were not harmed at all and were standing strongly.
The insurance agent neighbor was surprised to see it and he went to the retired teacher and asked, “We both grew the same plants together, I actually looked after my plants better than you did for yours, and even gave them more water. Still, my plants came off from the roots, while yours didn’t. How is that possible? ”
The retired teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more attention and water, but because of that they didn’t need to work themselves for it. You made it easy for them. While I gave them just an adequate amount of water and let their roots search for more. And, because of that, their roots went deeper and that made their position stronger.

A. Unemployment. B. Loss of inspiration.
C. Uncertainty. D. Lack of trust.
11. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. My Writing Journey B. On the Wings of Change
C. My Lifelong Faith D. On the Desk of Fate
D 9. A 10. C 11. B

D 13. C 14. D 15. C

43. Over the past decade, I ________ (learn) to be an independent person, and I still am.
【答案】have learned##have learnt
故填have learned/have learnt。
44. Like university students, the US high school students have the freedom to choose the courses ________ most attract them.
【答案】which##that
故填which/that。

That is why my plants lived”.

根据第一段中“There were two neighbors living next to each other. One of them was a retired (退休的) teacher and the other was an insurance agent (保险代理人) who had a lot of interest in technology.(有两个邻居住在一起。其中一个是退休教师,另一个是对技术很感兴趣的保险代理人)”可知,那里曾经住着两个邻居,且本空作主语,用名词neighbor“邻居”的复数形式neighbors。故填neighbors。
考查动词。根据第一段中“Both of them had planted different plants in their gardens. (他们俩都在花园里种了不同的植物)”可知,他们在各自的花园里种植了不同的植物。且本句描述过去的动作,故时态用一般过去时,谓语用grow“种植”的过去式grew。故填grew。
考查形容词比较级。根据第一段中“The retired teacher was giving a small amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give a full attention to them, while the other neighbor interested in technology, had given a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. (退休的老师给他的植物少量的水,并不总是给予他们充分的关注,而另一个邻居对技术感兴趣,给他的植物大量的水,照顾得太好了)”可知,与保险代理人相比,退休教师给他的植物浇的水和给予的关心更少。所以需要用形容词little的比较级less“更少的”,作定语,修饰water。故填less。
考查介词。根据第二段中“The retired teacher’s plants were simple but looked good. The insurance agent’s plants were much fuller and greener. (这位退休教师的植物很简单,但看起来很好。保险代理人种的植物更饱满、更绿)”可知,与老师的植物不同,代理人的植物看起来更健康。所以需要用like的反义词,介词unlike“不像”,位于句首,首字母大写。故填Unlike。
考查动词。根据第二段中“One day, during the night, there was a heavy rain and a wind due to a minor storm. (一天晚上,由于一场小风暴,下起了大雨,刮起了风)”可知,一场小风暴带来的大雨和风席卷了他们的花园。所以需要用动词sweep“席卷”。且本句描述的是过去发生的事情,所以需要用动词的过去式。故填swept。
考查形容词。根据第二段中“One day, during the night, there was a heavy rain and a wind due to a minor storm. Next morning, both of the neighbors came out to see the loss to their gardens. (一天晚上,由于一场小风暴,下起了大雨,刮起了风。第二天早上,两个邻居都出来看他们花园的损失)”可知,第二天早上,两个邻居都出来看他们花园的损失,说明他们担心自己的植物。所以需要用形容词worried“担心的”,作宾补。故填worried。
考查动词语态。根据第二段中“The neighbor who was an insurance agent saw that his plants came off from the roots (根) and were totally destroyed. (是保险代理人的邻居,他看到他的植物连根都掉了,完全被毁了)”可知,保险代理人的植物被连根拔起。所以需要用动词短语pull out of“被拔出”。本句描述过去的动作和状态,故时态用一般过去时,且主语The agent’s plants与pull out of之间是被动关系,本空用一般过去时的被动语态,主语为复数,be动词用were。故填were pulled。
根据第二段中“But, the retired teacher’s plants were not harmed at all and were standing strongly. (但是,这位退休教师的植物根本没有受到伤害,而且还很强壮)”可知,退休教师的植物却安然无恙,依然挺立着。safe and sound“安然无恙的”,为固定短语,所以需要用形容词safe,与sound并列。故填safe。
考查形容词。根据第三段“The insurance agent neighbor was surprised to see it and he went to the retired teacher and asked, “We both grew the same plants together, I actually looked after my plants better than you did for yours, and even gave them more water. Still, my plants came off from the roots, while yours didn’t. How is that possible? ” (邻居的保险代理人看到后很惊讶,他去问退休老师:“我们一起种同样的植物,实际上我对我的植物照顾得比你好,甚至给它们更多的水。”尽管如此,我的植物还是从根部脱落了,而你的却没有。这怎么可能呢?”)”可知,保险代理人邻居对此感到惊讶,说明他对两种不同结果感到困惑。所以需要用形容词confused“困惑的”,作表语。故填confused。
考查名词。根据最后一段“The retired teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more attention and water, but because of that they didn’t need to work themselves for it. You made it easy for them. While I gave them just an adequate amount of water and let their roots search for more. And, because of that, their roots went deeper and that made their position stronger. That is why my plants lived”.
由文章第一段中“The retired teacher was giving a small amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give a full attention to them, while the other neighbor interested in technology, had given a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. (退休的老师给他的植物少量的水,并不总是给予他们充分的关注,而另一个邻居对技术感兴趣,给他的植物大量的水,照顾得太好了)”可知,两位邻居照料植物的方式不同。退休教师给植物浇少量的水,并不总是给予充分的关注;而另一位对科技感兴趣的邻居则给植物浇了很多水,并且照顾得非常好。故答案为The retired teacher gave his plants less water and attention, while the insurance agent gave more water and care.
根据最后一段“The retired teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more attention and water, but because of that they didn’t need to work themselves for it. You made it easy for them. While I gave them just an adequate amount of water and let their roots search for more. And, because of that, their roots went deeper and that made their position stronger. That is why my plants lived”. The retired teacher’s plants had deeper roots because they had to search for water, making them stronger and more resilient to the storm. The insurance agent’s plants, however, were given too much water and attention, leading to shallower roots and weaker foundation.
The story teaches us that sometimes, providing too much help or comfort can weaken one’s ability to withstand challenges. It’s important to let individuals or plants develop their own strength and resilience.
