The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52%
HEATING 28%
COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6%
LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.
SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells have cut costs by 80% since 2010, making them viable in numerous regions.
WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (涡轮机) in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates persist. “The scale of this transition is staggering,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental imperative; it’s economically inevitable.
21.Which two categories combined account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A.Electricity and Heating. B.Heating and Cooling.
C.Appliances and Lighting. D.Cooling and Appliances.
22.Which technology is highlighted as cost-effective for diverse climates?
A.Heat pumps. B.Smart grids. C.Solar panels. D.Wind turbines.
23.What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the energy transition?
A.The dominance of gas boilers. B.The increase in solar efficiency.
C.The need for higher investment. D.The breakthrough in heat pump technology.

Dr. Marie-Luce Chevalier, a Belgian/French geologist (地质学家), has been working a as a research professor at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in Beijing since 2010.
For the past 14 years, she has been studying active faults (断层) in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and how they move. In 2021, Chevalier was presented with the Chinese Government Friendship Award in appreciation of her contributions to the development of China’s disaster assessment system of earthquake and the promotion of cooperation and exchanges between China and other countries.
Chevalier’s choice of China as a research destination was not made by chance. Her research has primarily focused on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. She had also collaborated (合作) with Chinese scientists from the beginning of her master’s program. “When they asked if I wanted to join their team after my post-doctorate, I gladly accepted and have no regrets. My fourteen years in China have provided me with a constant source of fresh personal and professional experiences,” she said, adding that her mother’s interest in Chinese culture contributed to her decision to work in the country.
Chevalier will continue to research active faults in and around Xizang actively and contribute to our understanding of how past climate developed to work towards predicting future climate change, another topic near and dear to her heart. She will accomplish this by conducting field research, sharing her findings with scientific community, teaching students who will become tomorrow’s scientists, and raising awareness among local populations about the risks they may face in their lifetime.
Chevalier’s mother went to Xizang once, realising her lifelong dreams. Chevalier keeps raising her daughter in this safe and highly international environment, Beijing. When people ask her daughter where she is from at four years old, she proudly answers, “China!” Chevalier wants to learn more about the Chinese language and culture, continue to enjoy the happiness of the Chinese people, and look forward to seeing what China achieves next!
24.What achievement did Chevalier get?

Does math leave you anxious? If so, don’t worry. Ben Orlin is here to help. This US-based teacher wants to reduce the anxiety math triggers.
He believes that many people who struggle with math simply weren’t taught it correctly. In many classrooms, teachers present math as a memory exercise. But to Orlin, math really is a system of communication. It’s a way to share ideas. And it all starts with assigning numbers to the world.
In his 2024 book Math for English Majors, Orlin builds on Galileo’s idea of math as a universal language, but he takes it further. He suggests we treat math not as a “foreign” language, but as an everyday tool to interpret the world.
Orlin suggests considering numbers as nouns and explains that some mathematical features correspond to verbs and even grammar. What in math corresponds to verbs? Verbs typically signify action. Could operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and so on, stand in for verbs? Stretch your imagination. And operations are not just a set of instructions, he suggests, but also a grammatical structure for math. Consider the plus sign in “2 + 3”. More than just a symbol, it can function as a conjunction (the “and” in “2 and 3”) or a preposition (the “with” in “2 with 3”).
Negative numbers can be likened to a linguistic (语言的) trick, Orlin argues. Consider phrases like “300 feet below sea level” from a mathematical perspective. The altitude could be represented as “-300 feet”. The minus symbol could be mapped to prepositions, such as “below”, “before”, “backward” and “down”. Similarly, the plus symbol could be mapped to their opposites — “above”, “after”, “forward” and “up”. To make negative numbers more accessible, Orlin suggests that educators connect them to concrete concepts like debt. That’s a term often associated with negative dollars.
It’s still early days to determine whether math could indeed serve as a universal language. Moreover, for TomCrawford, a math professor at the University of Oxford, it’s hardly the only way to help kids appreciate math. “But to me, any idea aimed at presenting math differently and making it more accessible is an excellent idea,” Crawford says.
28.Which of the following best describes Ben Orlin according to the text?
A.Cautious and theoretical. B.Loyal and patriotic.
C.Innovative and intellectual. D.Ambitious and conservative.
29.According to Ben Orlin’s logic, which of the following statements is correct?
A.“×” can be accurately described as “divided into”.
B.“+” can be expressed by the concept of “belonging to”.
C.“+” is best understood through the lens of “exceeding”.
D.“-” can be effectively represented by the idea of “eliminating”.
30.How does Ben Orlin make mathematics more accessible to learners?
A.By presenting it as a foreign language. B.By using language-related comparisons.
C.By simplifying formulas and calculations. D.By treating it as a universal numbering system.
31.What does Ben Orlin’s approach show?
A.Knowledge is power. B.Practice makes perfect.
C.A different angle makes all the difference. D.Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

(新问题)A chatbot (聊天机器人) might not break a sweat every time you ask it to make your shopping list or come up with its best dad jokes. But over time, the planet might.
As generative AI such as large language models, or LLMs, becomes everywhere, we now face crucial questions. For every interaction with AI, how much energy is used — and how much carbon dioxide is emitted (排放)?
In June, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that an average ChatGPT ask uses as much energy as an oven does in a little over one second. AI research firm Epoch AI previously calculated a similar estimate. However, some experts say the claim lacks key context, like what an “average” ask even is.
“If you wanted to be thorough about it, you would have to give a range,” says Sasha Luccioni, an AI researcher at the AI firm Hugging Face. “You can’t just throw a number out there.”
Major players including OpenAI and Anthropic have the data, but they’re not sharing. Instead, researchers can only piece together limited clues from open-source LLMs. One study in Frontiers in Communication examined 14 such models, including those from Meta and DeepSeek, and found that some models produce up to 70 times as much CO₂ emissions as others.
But even these numbers offer an incomplete picture. Things get more dire after factoring in model training, manufacturing and maintaining hardware, and how widely generative AI is expected to spread into our daily lives.
LLMs are energy-hungry, in part because of their large number of parameters (参数) — the internal settings a model adjusts during training to improve performance. The more parameters, the more capacity the model has to learn patterns and relationships in data. GPT-4 is estimated to have over a trillion parameters.
These models are housed in massive data centers across the world and loaded on servers containing powerful chips called graphics processing units. GPUs do the computations needed to generate helpful outputs. The more parameters, typically the more chips that are needed.
And that requires a lot of energy. Already, 4.4 percent of all energy in the United States goes toward data centers. By 2028, this number is projected to grow to up to 12 percent.
32.How does the author introduce?
A.By making a contrast. B.By presenting alarming statistics.
C.By quoting a leading expert in the field. D.By defining key technical terms.
33.What do some experts think of Sam Altman’s claim?
A.They think it properly accounts for complex asks.
B.They consider it an oversimplification.
C.They argue the claim is based on outdated or inaccurate data.
D.They believe it underestimates the energy used per ask.
34.What does the underlined word “dire” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Insignificant. B.Direct and straightforward.
C.Extremely serious. D.Dirty or polluted.
35.What is the major message of this text?
A.Reducing parameters is the key to environment-friendly generative AI.
B.The financial cost of AI hardware is the main barrier to its development.
C.The benefits of generative AI justify its substantial energy consumption.
D.Generative AI’s growth is creating a severe energy consumption crisis.

Having strong interpersonal skills means more than just knowing how to talk. It means truly understanding what someone is feeling — even when they don’t say it out loud. Experts say some people are good at reading others’ intentions using these simple tricks.
36
During conversations, body movements can reveal a lot. A smile, eye contact, or a gentle lean forward can mean a person feels open and connected to you. These warm signals often show trust and emotional safety. Being able to spot these actions — and respond to them — shows strong emotional intelligence, which is the skill of understanding and managing feelings in yourself and others.
They recognize the power of silence
37 . A long pause or a thoughtful silence can carry real meaning. This is called a “quiet signal” — a nonverbal way of expressing feelings without words. Silence during a conversation can show that someone is listening deeply, feeling unsure, or needing space.
They listen to the way someone speaks
The tone of voice carries emotion. 38 . If someone laughs with you or matches your speaking pace, it’s a sign they’re engaged. But if their voice suddenly becomes shaky, quiet, or speeds up, it might mean they’re nervous or hiding something. These small clues are often tiny emotional signals that give away true feelings.
They observe others regularly
People with strong interpersonal skills often spend time simply watching. Whether in a coffee shop or walking through a store, they notice how people move, react, and interact. 39 . You’ll start seeing what different emotions look like and be able to respond with better care and understanding.
They notice signs of disinterest
Someone looking away, crossing their arms, or fidgeting may show discomfort or boredom. A yawn, foot tapping, or long pause might signal that something is off. People who display these behaviors often feel stressed, distrustful, or disconnected. 40 .
A.They watch how people connect
B.They pay attention to appearance
C.Sometimes, people say the most when they say nothing at all
D.A steady, calm tone usually means a person is relaxed and sincere
E.Watching others in real-life moments helps you better read people over time
F.Spotting them early can help you shift the conversation or offer support if needed
G.Based on body language and appearance, these early impressions often shape how relationships begin

We all have been in different situations. Now 41 back to two situations from your past, one pleasant and the other unpleasant. 42 carefully whether you relive (再体验) them or just recall them. If you relive them, 43 the same emotions as if you are undergoing the same situations again, you are 44 associated with the incidents. If you can objectively recall the incidents in the past, it’s 45 that you are dissociated (使分离) from the incidents.
Now how do association and dissociation 46 us in our life?
The simple 47 I prefer to follow is to associate with positive things in life and dissociate from the negative ones. Several months ago, my friends and I went to Ooty Hill Station. One friend, Amy, had been there before—she’d had a wonderful time and 48 the beauty of nature. The only unpleasant thing was that her ring fell into the 49 . When we decided to take a boat ride, Amy was not willing to 50 us, as she had associated the 51 with that unpleasant memory before closely. 52 she had many other pleasant memories of her previous visit, she had closely 53 that unpleasant incident to heart and relived the same old incident. Had she dissociated herself from that unpleasant incident, she could have figured out a way to keep the 54 safe during such a boat ride.
So, learning to make a good 55 of which to associate and which to dissociate will make our life better.

During White Dew, or Bai Lu, the summer heat gradually fades, and the weather turns cooler. With 56 (great) differences between day and night temperatures than those of the hottest day, moisture in the air condenses into dewdrops (露珠) — hence the name “White Dew”.
In ancient times, people 57 (divide) the 15 days of White Dew into three phases: First, wild geese arrive; second, swallows return south; third, birds begin to store food. Migratory birds are highly sensitive 58 temperature changes, and the ancient Chinese observed that by White Dew, geese, swallows, and other species start their southward journey in search of warmer lands, while many birds begin storing food for the winter.
Around this time, the Northern Hemisphere enters the peak of bird migration. The Taihu Lake area in Suzhou, 59 (recognize) as an internationally important wetland along the East Asia-Australasia migratory route, 60 (absolute) lives up to its name as a “paradise for migratory birds”. Flocks travel southward along major flyways, crossing continents to overwinter in warmer regions. 61 (protect) these ecosystems, China has passed a Wetland Conservation Law, strengthening the conservation of 82 internationally significant wetlands 62 protecting habitats for migratory birds — an important contribution to global biodiversity.
Customs of White Dew mostly revolve around the idea of “nourishing(滋养)with dew”, 63 rooted in agricultural society. Ancient people believed that with the weather turning cooler, the body was more likely to suffer autumn 64 (dry). To deal with this, they consumed nourishing foods such as longans and tremella mushrooms. This tradition continues today, 65 (reflect) the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

The phone call came on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, breaking the quiet of my study. It was my best friend Sarah, her voice trembling with excitement. “I found an old letter in a secondhand book,” she whispered, “from a soldier during the war!”
My curiosity sparked immediately as she described the delicate, yellowed pages. The letter was written by Thomas to his sweetheart Eleanor, recalling their dating memories by the riverbank in their hometown. He promised to bring home Eleanor’s favorite violets (紫罗兰) when he returned, speaking of a future he desperately hoped to share after the war.
This powerful record of love touched us deeply. Holding that letter, we felt we were holding a piece of two beating hearts, a tangible link to a love that had withstood the test of time. We realized this wasn’t just a forgotten note; it was a living testament to the resilience of love, and it felt wrong for it to be separated from the family it belonged to. We knew, with a profound sense of duty, that we had to try to return this precious piece of personal history to Thomas and Eleanor’s family, to rekindle (重新点燃) the flame of their story for the generations that followed.
Fueled by this sense of purpose, we began our search. We spent days online, looking through websites about family history and old public records. We felt a thrill every time we found a possible clue-a matching name in an old database, a mention of their hometown. But each time, our hope was crushed. It seemed that it was an impossible task, and we started to doubt if our small quest could truly bridge the vast gap of decades.
With a sigh, we were about to give up when a final search brought up a new result. We got a comment on a forum that Eleanor’s granddaughter was living in a small town on the outskirts of the city. My heart leaped. Could it be? With renewed hope, we drove there and met Margaret, a middle-aged woman, at a local cafe.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
To make sure we wouldn’t make a mistake, we started with a few questions.

With renewed hope, we drove there and met Margaret, a middle-aged woman, at a local cafe.

but he takes it further. He suggests we treat math not as a"foreign"language, but as an everyday tool to interpret
the world
Orlin suggests considering numbers as nouns and explains that some mathematical features correspond to
verbs and even grammar. What in math corresponds to verbs?Verbs typically signify action.Could operations,
such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and so on,stand in for verbs?Stretch your imagination. And
operations are not just a set of instructions,he suggests, but also a grammatical structure for math.Consider the
plus sign in "2+3".More than just a symbol,it can function as a conjunction (the "and"in "2 and 3")or a
preposition(the“with”in“2with3)
Negative numbers can be likened to a linguistic trick,Orlin argues.Consider phrases like"300
feet below sea level"from a mathematical perspective. The altitude could be represented as "-300 feet".The
minus symbol could be mapped to prepositions, such as“below',“before',“backward'and“dowm”.Similarly,
the plus symbol could be mapped to their opposites一“above'',“after'',“forward''and“up'.To make negative
numbers more accessible,Orlin suggests that educators connect them to concrete concepts like debt. That's a term
often associated with negative dollars.
It's still early days to determine whether math could indeed serve as a universal language. Moreover, for
TomCrawford,a math professor at the University of Oxford,it's hardly the only way to help kids appreciate math.
"But to me,any idea aimed at presenting math differently and making it more accessible is an excellent idea,"
Crawford says.

As generative AI such as large language models,or LLMs,becomes everywhere,we now face crucial
questions. For every interaction with AI,how much energy is used-and how much carbon dioxide is emitted
放)?
In June,OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that an average ChatGPT ask uses as much energy as an oven
does in a little over one second.AI research firm Epoch AI previously calculated a similar estimate. However,
some experts say the claim lacks key context, like what an"average"ask even is.
"If you wanted to be thorough about it,you would have to give a range,"says Sasha Luccioni,an AI
researcher at the aI firm Hugging Face."You can't just throw a number out there."
Major players including OpenAI and Anthropic have the data, but they're not sharing.Instead, researchers
can only piece together limited clues from open-source LLMs.One study in Frontiers in Communication
examined 14 such models, including those from Meta and DeepSeek, and found that some models produce up to
70 times as much CO2 emissions as others.
But even these numbers offer an incomplete picture.Things get more dire after factoring in model training,
manufacturing and maintaining hardware, and how widely generative al is expected to spread into our daily lives.
LLMs are energy-hungry,in part because of their large number of parameters()-the internal settings
a model adjusts during training to improve performance. The more parameters, the more capacity the model has to
learn patterns and relationships in data.GPT-4 is estimated to have over a trillion parameters.
These models are housed in massive data centers across the world and loaded on servers containing
powerful chips called graphics processing units.GPUs do the computations needed to generate helpful outputs.
The more parameters, typically the more chips that are needed.
And that requires a lot of energy.Already,4.4 percent of all energy in the United States goes toward data
centers.By 2028,this number is projected to grow to up to 12 percent.

Should We Be Polite to AI?
Opinions are divided on whether we should be polite to AI. Personally, I believe that demonstrating politeness towards AI is a meaningful practice.
Firstly, AI lacks consciousness and emotions, so it doesn’t comprehend courtesy in the way humans do. However, the way we interact with AI can shape our own habits. Secondly, as AI becomes more integrated into daily life and sophisticated in its responses, a polite tone can make the human-machine interaction feel smoother and more pleasant. Ultimately, being polite to AI helps cultivate a more respectful and considerate communication style, which benefits our social relationships.

To make sure we wouldn’t make a mistake, we started with a few questions. In the slightly noisy café, we cautiously asked if she had ever heard the names “Thomas” and “Eleanor”. She paused, a flicker of recognition lighting in her eyes, and then confirmed they were her grandparents. She told us Thomas had returned after the war and spent the rest of his life with Eleanor in this very town. Our certainty grew as she accurately named the river from Thomas’s hometown and recalled Eleanor’s beloved violets — each detail a perfect match to the intimate world preserved within the letter.
Hearing what she said, we were sure that the letter had found its home. We solemnly handed her the letter, heavy with time and deep emotion. Margaret accepted it, her fingers tenderly tracing the faded ink as her eyes glistened with tears. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “This letter,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion, “does more than just recall the past — it brings my grandparents’ love back to life.” Watching her hold the letter, a profound connection across generations, we knew that some bonds could never be broken by time — they simply waited patiently in yellowed pages for the right moment to be awakened, to continue their journey through generations.

A
The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52%
HEATING 28%
COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6%
LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.SMART GRIDS (电网) — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells have cut costs by 80% since 2010, making them viable in numerous regions.WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids

36.根据本段内容“During conversations, body movements can reveal a lot. A smile, eye contact, or a gentle lean forward can mean a person feels open and connected to you. These warm signals often show trust and emotional safety. Being able to spot these actions — and respond to them — shows strong emotional intelligence, which is the skill of understanding and managing feelings in yourself and others.(在交流过程中,肢体动作往往能透露很多信息。
37.根据后文“A long pause or a thoughtful silence can carry real meaning. This is called a “quiet signal” —a nonverbal way of expressing feelings without words. Silence during a conversation can show that someone is listening deeply, feeling unsure, or needing space.(一段长时间的沉默或深思熟虑的静默往往蕴含着真正的含义。
38.根据上文“The tone of voice carries emotion.(说话的语气会传达出情感)”以及后文“If someone laughs with you or matches your speaking pace, it’s a sign they’re engaged. But if their voice suddenly becomes shaky, quiet, or speeds up, it might mean they’re nervous or hiding something. These small clues are often tiny emotional signals that give away true feelings.(如果有人与你一起大笑,或者与你保持相同的说话节奏,这表明他们很投入。
39.根据上文“People with strong interpersonal skills often spend time simply watching. Whether in a coffee shop or walking through a store, they notice how people move, react, and interact.(具备出色人际交往能力的人往往会花时间单纯地观察。
40.根据上文“Someone looking away, crossing their arms, or fidgeting may show discomfort or boredom. A yawn, foot tapping, or long pause might signal that something is off. People who display these behaviors often feel stressed, distrustful, or disconnected.(有人看向别处、交叉双臂或者坐立不安,可能表示他们感到不适或无聊。

根据后文than those of the hottest day可知为比较级。故填greater。
短语be sensitive to表示“对……敏感”。故填to。
句中已有谓语动词“ lives up to”,故空处缺非谓语动词,此处recognize与the Taihu Lake area构成被动关系,故用过去分词作定语。故填recognized。
修饰动词短语live up to用副词absolutely。故填absolutely。
故填To protect。
“strengthening the conservation...” 故填and。
故填which。
