Coach: David? Everybody has gone home. Why are you still here?
David: (Frustrated) Hi, Coach. I just need some time to myself.
Coach: Are you upset because you missed the last shot that could have won us the game?
David: I suppose so. I let everyone down. I feel so bad. Maybe I shouldn’t play again.
Coach: Listen David, missing shots is all part of the game. Michael Jordan is one of the best basketball players of all time, but did you know that during his career, he lost
almost 300 games, and missed more than 9,000 shots? Twenty-six times, he had been trusted to take the game-winning shot but missed.
David: Are you trying to tell me it’s normal to fail?
of all time自古以来;有史以来;从未有过
Coach: Yes, of course. Even good players may fail to score when everyone is depending on them. Remember, how many times you fail is not important. What is much more important is that you keep trying to get it right.
David: Now, I don’t feel so bad. I hope I can get my confidence back in the next game.
Coach: That’s good, but you don’t have to wait for your confidence to return. There are things you can do yourself.
David: OK, Coach, I’m listening.
Coach: First, don’t beat yourself up when you get something wrong. Confidence grows when you accept your mistakes, rather than thinking you are stupid or that you
have ruined everything for others. Second, keep in mind that self-doubt is OK. Being worried about performing badly is quite normal. If you don’t let these worries overcome you, your performance will actually improve. Third, do more practice. If you practise playing basketball a lot, you will do better in the next match. So, just go for it!
go for sth.
David: Thanks, Coach.
Coach: See you at our next practice?
David: Sure!
B. David has found an article about causes of low self-confidence and ways to build up one’s self-confidence. Read the article and fill in the table below. Page 9
Negative effects of low self-confidence
Causes of low self-confidence
Ways to improve
self-confidence
Making you feel unsuccessful, unmotivated and inferior to others
Preventing you from doing your best and perhaps from even trying
Leading you to fail
The home environment where children grow and develop
Negative experiences
Working on positive thinking
Setting realistic goals and visualizing yourself achieving these goals
Permitting yourself to make mistakes
Build up your self-confidence
Self‑confidence is about trusting your judgement and your ability to do something well. It is also about being willing to consider the possibility that you are wrong
and to change your mind. It is a combination of courage and humility, which leads to open‑minded thinking.
Low self‑confidence, in contrast, will make you feel unsuccessful, unmotivated and inferior to others. It often prevents you from doing your best and perhaps from even trying. When you do try, your lack of trust in yourself may ultimately lead you to fail.
The reasons for low self‑confidence are many and varied, and often differ from person to person. One of the reasons is the home environment where children grow
and develop.
by contrast / in contrast/ in contrast to 相比之下
They may find it difficult to develop self‑confidence if their parents are critical or overprotective. Once they fail to fulfil expectations, they may feel bad about themselves and get trapped in the cage of self‑doubt. Negative experiences also have a huge impact on self‑confidence.
If a child gets bullied in school or in the neighbourhood, he or she may be afraid of speaking in public, even when he or she grows up to be an adult.
The good news is that your self‑confidence can be improved. Firstly, work on positive thinking. A positive attitude will lead to positive results. Do not worry about
letting others down. All they expect is that you do your best. Turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. You can always talk to yourself in a positive way, such as “I can do it!” or “I’ll give it another try!”.
Secondly, set realistic goals for yourself and visualize yourself achieving these goals. Confidence is built on a sense of accomplishment. It is important to break down the overall goal into smaller and more measurable tasks. For those tasks you are not so sure about, ask your friends or family for advice. Also, understand that it is perfectly normal if you do not succeed in completing a task.
build sth on sth在…
Finally, permit yourself to make mistakes. It is not always
possible to get things right the first time. Therefore, do not always feel bad about yourself when you make a mistake, but accept it as an opportunity to reflect on what has gone wrong and how you can do better when you try again. Recognize your mistakes and make a plan to avoid them in the future.
C. In pairs, have a discussion about self-confidence. Use the following questions to help you. Page 10
• Have you experienced something that made you feel less self‑confident? If yes, what was it?
• What causes low self‑confidence?
• What are the negative effects of low self‑confidence ?
• How can you build up your self‑confidence ?
Possible answer
A: I’ve had low self-confidence since starting senior high school. For instance, I need to give an English speech next week and I have prepared and practised a lot, but I still feel so scared. I’m afraid I’m going to do a terrible job. I really want to give up.
B: Why do you think you’ve lost your self-confidence?
A: My parents expect me to perform as well as I’ve always done, but senior high is more challenging. I feel I’m letting them down, so I’ve started doubting myself.
B: I understand. My self-confidence dropped after a negative experience I had in junior high.
A: What happened?
B: I was very shy and some of my classmates bullied me. Since then I’ve developed low self-confidence and now I’m still afraid to join any clubs, even the Film Club which really interests me.
A: That’s a pity! We’ve both felt the negative effects of low self-confidence on us. My self-doubt has made me afraid of speaking in public.
B: And I’ve avoided joining clubs because I believe I’m not good enough. Low self-confidence could follow us into adulthood, so we need to improve it.
A: You’re right. Changing how we think is a good place to start. After all, a positive attitude will lead to positive results! I’ll start now: “I always try my best and I’ll give a wonderful English speech!”
B: Yes! Let’s set realistic goals and imagine achieving them. I’ll ask the chairman of the Film Club
if I’m allowed to attend the club meetings as an observer first. In this way, I can slowly build up my confidence before participating in the club.
A: Great idea! But remember, it’s OK not to get things right the first time we try. In fact, making mistakes allows us to reflect on what has gone wrong.
B: And figure out how to do better next time! I’m confident that our plans to improve our self-confidence will be a success!
D.Write an article about self-confidence. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you. Check and improve your writing after you finish it.
Self-confidence builds a better self
Self-confidence arises from a combination of various behaviours and attitudes, including trusting our judgements and our abilities.
arise(out of/from sth)(由…) 产生
It is also about not being afraid to change our mind about something after admitting we are wrong.Self-confidence thus is courage blended with humility, which results in open-minded thinking and prevents fear of failure.
Though we would like to feel self-confident all the time, low self-confidence often occurs due to various reasons. One is the home environment in which we grow and develop. For example, if a student’s parents are critical and expect him or her to perform well all the time, he or she can find it difficult to be self-confident.
Another reason is negative experiences like bullying. We may then carry our low self-confidence with us, affecting our lives in many ways. We may feel afraid to socialize or express ourselves. We also sometimes perform poorly academically or lose out on a job promotion because we do not trust our own abilities.
so·cial·ize (with sb)(和他人)交往,交际; 使适应社会
poor·ly /ˈpɔːli/ adv.
lose out on sth.
Low self-confidence cannot always be avoided; however, it can be improved. A good place to start is by changing the way we think about ourselves. Having a positive self-image can reduce negative thinking. Next, we can increase our sense of accomplishment by setting small, realistic and measurable goals. Of course, some goals will challenge us, and we might not succeed first time round.
have a positive/negative self-image
Instead of feeling like a failure, we can ask people we trust for advice. In fact, it is important for us to permit ourselves to make mistakes. Mistakes create opportunities for reflection and help us plan better for when we try again. All in all, self-confidence is something we can control, which means it is within our power to make the changes needed to build a better self.

Steven: Miss Wu, can I ask you for some advice?
Miss Wu: Of course.
Steven: I’ve been trying to improve my school performance this year, but it’s still disappointing.
For instance, I take down pages of notes during my classes, but then later, I can’t understand them and struggle to do my homework efficiently.
Miss Wu: I see. Sometimes less is more. Try writing down only main ideas and relevant information, and use a visual aid like a mind map to connect information. Remember, an efficient learning method matters.
Steven: I’ll try that. I really hope this method could help improve my school performance. To tell the truth,
I often have moments of self-doubt when thinking about my school performance. I don’t believe I’m as capable as my classmates. In fact, this worries me so much that I can’t sleep well at night. I just can’t help but lie awake thinking about my problems.
Miss Wu: I understand. But don’t keep all these negative feelings to yourself(但不要把这些负面情绪独自憋在心里). You have a good support network where your family, friends and teachers are ready to help. Talk to them about your problems, and you’ll start to feel better.
keep sth to yourself对…
Steven: I will. Do you have any other suggestions?
Miss Wu: Yes. It also helps that you do some exercise regularly. It tires out your body,so that you can fall asleep more easily. Besides, it also helps relieve your anxiety, making you feel good about yourself. Then you will be able to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
Steven: I see, Miss Wu. I’m going to put these tips into action immediately and look forward to the improvements in my school performance and mental well-being.
put sth. into action将…

Steven: I used to think that the only way to improve my school performance was to work harder. But my teacher, Miss Wu, has made me realize that it’s also important to work smart by using efficient learning methods, to seek help from our support network, and to look after our body and mind.
Following Miss Wu’s advice, I have made a series of changes. Firstly, I’ve started to use mind maps to organize my class notes whenever I can.
Now I can not only remember the subject matter easily and understand it better, but also complete my homework to a high standard. This has motivated me to try other efficient learning methods, such as creating a study plan to manage my time smartly. Secondly, I’ve tried talking to my parents, friends and teachers for support and help. This has lifted a weight off my shoulders by providing an outlet for my worries. weight (of sth)重任;重担;重压;压力
Finally telling the truth was a great weight off my shoulders .
It has also made me realize that I’m not the only one with these problems and that I don’t have to work all on my own.
Finally,I’ve started running on weekends and sometimes after school. Sometimes I play table tennis with my best friend on Friday evening. Since I started exercising regularly, I’ve been able to fall asleep more easily and sleep more soundly[酣(睡),(睡得)沉]. When I wake up, I feel refreshed(神清气爽) and energetic, which makes it easier for me to concentrate in class.
All these positive changes have given me more control over my life. My school performance has improved, and I do not have as much self-doubt as before. With a more positive outlook on my schoolwork and life in general, I
have the confidence to make changes and improvements in other areas of my life too!
A3. In turns, talk about an aspect of your studies that you find difficult and how you address this problem. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the
expressions in bold. Page 60
English is one of my favourite subjects. I especially love reading English stories, but I get nervous every time I have to speak English. Recently, I have realized that because of
this, my oral English proficiency is suffering and that I need to make more efforts to improve my oral English.
I have decided to first work on my English listening skills because listening and speaking are closely connected. Now, I listen to English as often as possible.
proficiency/prəˈfɪʃənsɪ/水平
For instance, whenever I have free time, I watch English videos or listen to podcasts on topics that interest me. While listening, I pay attention to the speakers’ pronunciation and tone of voice.
At the same time, I try to create opportunities to speak English more. After I watch a video or listen to a podcast, sometimes I repeat what I hear, or record myself speaking
to find out how my oral English can be improved. I also try working with a language partner.
During class breaks, I often speak English with my friend Alice, who is really excellent at oral English. I have also joined the school English Club and I am looking forward to engaging more friends in everyday English conversation. These strategies have already made a difference: my pronunciation has improved, I can express myself more fluently, and my confidence has returned.
