In my living room, there is a plaque (that advises me to "Bloom where you are planted."
It reminds me of Dorothy.I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s,when I was teaching Early
Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville,Kentucky. The
job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of cach teacher in the program.
Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who"bloomed"in her remote area.
Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County,Kentucky,Appalachian Mountain area.To get
to her school from the town of Harlan,I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the
eight-mile journey,I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting
caught by the same train five times.Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the
mountains,I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses
gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness.
From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom ()disappeared.Upon
arriving at Dorothy's classroom,I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The
children had been prepared to show me theu latest projects.Dorothy told me with a big smile that
they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for"dinner"(lunch). In case you don't know,
poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground
Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her esthusiasm never
cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive the
Child Development Associate Certification,Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and
passed in all areas.Afterwards, she invited me to the one-and-only steakhouse in the area to
celebrate her victory,as if she had just received her Ph.D.degree.After the meal, she placed in
my hand a small box containing an old pen.She said it was a family heirloom(传家宝),but to me,
it was a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride-one that cannot be matched by anything
else.

D.an organization sponsored by Union College
25.Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by

Pcople consistently underestimate how much others in their social circle might appreciate an
unexpected phone call, text or email just to say hello, and the more surprising the connection, the
greater the appreciation, according to a new study.
In the study, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh conducted several experiments
involving more than 5,900 participants. In one experiment, half of the participants were asked to
recall the last time they reached out to someone in their social circle after a prolonged period of
not interacting with them. The rest were asked to recall a similar situation in which someone had
reached out to them.Participants were then asked to indicate on a 7-point scale (how much
they or the person they had contacted had appreciated the gesture.People who recalled reaching
out believed the gesture was significantly less appreciated than those who recalled receiving a
communication.
In other experiments, participants sent a short note,or a small gift,to someone in their social
circle with whom they had not interacted in a while.Similar to the previous experiment,
participants who initiated (contact were asked to rate on a 7-point scale the extent to which
they thought the recipient would appreciate or feel grateful for the contact. After the notes or gifts
were sent, researchers also asked the recipients to rate their appreciation.
Across all experiments, those who initiated the communication significantly underestimated
the extent to which recipients would appreciate the act of reaching out.Besides, the researchers
found that people receiving the communication placed greater focus than those initiating the
communication on the surprise element, and this heightened focus on surprise was associated
with higher appreciation."We also found that people underestimated others'appreciation to a
greater extent when the communication was more surprising,as opposed to part of a regular
communication pattern,or the social ties between the two participants were weak,"added lead
author Peggy Liu
Initiating social contact after a prolonged period of disconnection can be daunting because

hesitations may be unnecessary,as othcrs are likely to appreciate being reached out to more than

B.By giving examples
C.By making assumptions.

Research shows that when social media use is high, depression is also high. But the
question is-is that because social media causes that person to be depressed?Or is it because
people who are depressed tend to also use social media more, and spend less time exercising and
being in green spaces?"That is what we wanted to understand,"says Carol Vidal, the first author
of the study,a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.
In their study,376 young adults in Canada were asked to complete three online
questionnaires between May 2021 and January 2022.At each point, participants self-reported
depressive symptoms based on the PHQ-9-a nine-item scale that is commonly used to measure
depression-as well as social media use, green space exposure, and physical activity.
Researchers found that participants who had higher social media use tended to be more
depressed, and people who-were more depressed also tended to use social media more. However,
researchers found that social media use did not cause an increase or decrease in depressive
symptom levels over time.
Researchers also found that higher levels of social media use and higher levels of
depressive symptoms were associated with lower levels of green space exposure. In addition,
higher eveningness was also associated with higher depressive symptom levels.
One study author says these results show social media use and depression are associated,
but do not provide evidence that greater social media use predicts an increase in depressive
symptoms over time.Other professionals in the team also say these findings indicate people who
suffer from depression should be careful about the amount of time they spend on social media
and should be encouraged to integrate other healthy habits into their lifestyle.

comments, and ask questions to clarify your meaning.36 Your classmates (your peers)
read your paper and make comments using a set of questions and guidelines.Peer editing can
help you strengthen any areas in your writing that are weak or that appear confusing to the reader.
Here are some suggestions for peer editing:
Listen carefully. In peer editing, you will receive comments and suggestions from other
students.3 You may think that what you wrote is clear and accurate, but readers can
often tell you ,what needs improvement..Remember that the comments are about the writing, not
about you.
Make helpful comments.38 Use polite language. For example, instead of saying
"This is bad grammar,"or"I can't understand any of your ideas,"make helpful comments, such

as "You need to make sure that every sentence has a verb,"or "What do you mean in this
sentence?"
39 There arc cxamples of edits and comments that a teacher made on a student's first
draft and an examplc of the student's sccond draft in the Writer's Handbook
Read, read, read! It is important for you to understand why a piece of writing is good or is

Twins Katie and Sarah Monahan arrived at Pennsylvania's Gettysburg College, determined
to strike out on independent paths.Although the 18-year-old sisters had requested rooms in
different dormitories, the housing office placed them on the eighth floor of the same building
across the hall from each other.
Katie was a very considerate and kind-hearted girl, always trying to keep others from any
trouble.Once, when the dormitory lost power while her roommate Windy was studying in the
classroom,Katie found herself alone in the dark.Having just finished watching her favorite
horror series on American TV,she felt quite scared.Yet not wanting to disturb Windy, she
remained alone in the dark dorm until Windy returned.Windy, also a kind person, comforted and

Lived together very harmoniously.
While Katie got along well with her roommate,Sarah's situation was quite different.Sarah

Sarah liked wearing fur in winter and didn't mind dissecting frogs in biology class.Lily, however,
was a vegetarian who believed all living things were sacred, even ants and mosquitoes. The two
silently conflicted over everything, from when to tumn off the lights to how to arrange the
furiture.Eventually,they stopped communicating altogether.
One day,a dormitory contest was announced that required roommates to work together to
decorate their room.Sarah wanted to win,but she thought it impossible since she and Lily were
no longer on speaking terms.
Depressed and hopeless,Sarah ran aoross the hall to seek help from Katie
Hearing what Katie said, both Sarah and Lily lowered their heads.
