【原文】 Since the turn of the century, technology advancements have been transforming our life at an unprecedented pace. Having seen how the past has unfolded, I am curious about what the next 30 years would look like. Let’s explore how society might continue to evolve. The first tech-advancement that we can expect in the future is the rise of 3D printing technology. Right now we have 3D printed tools and homes. In the future, we will be able to print more tools and perhaps even some modes of transportation if bigger machines are built. The current trend of open source 3D printable files continues, and it will not be long before everyone prints their own large objects like furniture and weapons. In 2050 transportation will have greatly changed. With pioneers leading the way in autonomous vehicle research, it’s foreseeable that by mid-century fully automated cars will be commonplace. To be honest, this is just an exercise in imagination. Anyway, one thing is for certain, with how technology is progressing, I have no doubt that the world will be very different by 2050.

Balancing unsteadily as you try to walk across a rope strung high above the ground undoubtedly makes you anxious. But professional tightrope walker Chris Bullzini is getting people with anxiety and confidence issues to do just that.
Chris should be super-strong and focused for what he does, but that wasn’t always the case. “If you met me as a kid, you’d laugh out loud knowing how I’ve turned out,” Chris said. “I was skinny, tall and totally awkward.” What Chris did have was an interest in circus (马戏团), mastering juggling and then, in his early twenties becoming fascinated by seeing a wire walker. Travelling around 28 countries, he perfected different disciplines of rope walking, from loose and tight ropes just a couple of metres off the ground, to highway.
“Although you have to master balance and body coordination, about eighty percent of it is mental. I experience fear when I’m up there, but I don’t get scared. If I let nervousness take over, I would lose control and plummet,” he said.
Chris’s skills saw him perform with circus du Soleil on the film Dumbo. But after returning to hometown and setting up his circus yard, he decided to offer free anxiety-reducing workshops. “I was pretty lost when young and had my own issues with anxiety. So I thought helping people gain confidence and belief from what they are doing would definitely be awesome,” Chris said.
Participants wear safety equipment and progress at their own comfort level, with some staying near ground level and others attempting a significant 5. 5-meter-high wire. Chris said, “The sense of what you’ve achieved and how you’ve coped is then stuck in the mind. When you feel anxious, or the fear comes in, or they have a big challenge that seems impossible, you can go back to the preparation exercises we did.”
People who thought they’d never be able to do it push the anxiety aside and walk across as if they were born for it. Watching that transformation is a gift.
24. What led Chris to pursue tightrope walking in the beginning?
A. His interest in circus and an inspiration.
B. His desire for movie performance.
C. His goal to overcome anxiety.
D. His natural athletic talent.
25. What does the underlined word “plummet” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Give up. B. Get trapped.
C. Become confused. D. Fall down.
26. What can we learn about Chris’s workshops?
A. They’re safe and self-paced.
B. They focus more on physical skills.
C. They require participants to try highway.
D. They are designed to train professionals.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To describe a performer’s success story.
B. To explain rope walking techniques.
C. To promote free workshops offered by Chris.
D. To show how rope walking helps with anxiety.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. A 27. D

A short nap (小睡) during the day seems to increase the overall amount of sleep a young child gets, rather than being a serious threat to night-time sleep.
Babies and young children typically nap during the day, a habit that has been linked to the development of early memories. This trend usually stops between the ages of about 3 and 5, but the timing varies, leaving many parents unsure as to whether their child should nap or not.
In France, children start a form of preschool at 3 years old, which presents a dilemma (窘境) of whether staff should let them nap. “Some parents and teachers are concerned that napping during the day might disturb night-time sleep or reduce valuable learning time,” says Stéphanie Mazza at the University of Lyon in France.
To see if naps meaningfully disturb night-time sleep, Mazza and her colleagues gave wrist-worn sleep trackers to 85 children aged 2 to 5 from six French preschools and measured their sleep over an average of 7. 8 days.
This data, combined with sleep diaries filled in by parents, showed that an increase in nap time of 1 hour was linked to getting 13. 6 minutes less sleep at night, on average, and pushed back the time at which the child got to sleep at night by 6. 4 minutes. On days when children napped, their overall sleep time across the day increased by 45 minutes.
“Naps resulted in a significant increase in total daily sleep time, bringing children closer to the recommended international sleep duration for a 24-hour period,” says Mazza. The World Health Organization recommends that children of this age should sleep for 10 to 13 hours per day.
“Parents shouldn’t worry if their child still needs a nap before the age of 6,” says Mazza. “Rather than viewing naps as disturbing, they should be recognized as a valuable source of rest, especially when children are exposed to exciting environments.”
“To me, this says — if they can nap, let them nap,” says Rebecca Spencer at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
28. Why is the start of preschool at age 3 in France mentioned as a “dilemma”?
A. Because daytime napping ends universally at three.
B. Because parents in France are strongly against napping.
C. Because worries about night sleep and learning remain.
D. Because no napping after age 3 is required by law in France.
29. What method did Mazza and her colleagues use to conduct their research?
A. Interviewing parents about children’s sleep habits.
B. Using sleep trackers and parent-kept diaries.
C. Comparing kids’ sleep patterns in different nations.
D. Observing children’s behavior in preschools directly.
30. Which of the following statements agrees with the finding of Mazza’s study?
A. Daytime napping greatly reduces the quality of night-time sleep.
B. An hour of napping causes the same reduction in night-time sleep.
C. Napping helps children meet the recommended amount of daily sleep.
D. Daytime napping shortens the total sleep time within a day.
31. What is Rebecca Spencer’s attitude towards napping?
A. Unconcerned. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. B

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Mazza and her colleagues gave wrist-worn sleep trackers to 85 children aged 2 to 5 from six French preschools and measured their sleep over an average of 7. 8 days (Mazza和同事为6所法国幼儿园里85名2至5岁的儿童配备了腕戴式睡眠追踪器,并在平均7.8天的时间里监测他们的睡眠情况)”以及第五段中的“This data, combined with sleep diaries filled in by parents(这些数据与家长填写的睡眠日记相结合)”可知,Mazza团队的研究方法是使用睡眠追踪器+结合家长填写的睡眠日记。故选B项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的“Naps resulted in a significant increase in total daily sleep time, bringing children closer to the recommended international sleep duration for a 24-hour period (小睡使每日总睡眠时间显著增加,让儿童的睡眠时间更接近国际推荐的24小时睡眠时长标准)”可知,该研究发现日间小睡有助于儿童达到推荐的每日睡眠时长。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Rebecca Spencer话“To me, this says — if they can nap, let them nap(在我看来,这就说明——如果孩子能睡,那就让他们睡吧)”可知,她对幼儿日间小睡的态度是支持的。故选B项。
D
Picture the scene: a large crowd gathers looking expectantly up at a clear and dark sky. Suddenly, with a deafening bang, the sky explodes in a burst of colours. The crowd “oohs” and “aahs”, because watching a firework display is breathtaking. While modern rockets produce rich colours, the basic mixture of chemicals inside them has remained unchanged.
The earliest fireworks were created around AD 800 in China. Originally invented to create a medicine for everlasting life, fireworks instead ended up with an exploding mixture. Powered by waste, they contained three chemicals — potassium nitrate got from animal waste and human waste that were scraped (刮)off the side of public toilets, charcoal (from burnt wood)and sulfur (naturally in rocks). When packed inside a bamboo tube and set alight, this waste-powered mixture exploded with a loud and smoky (even smelly) bang.
For something to burn, fuel, oxygen and heat are needed. The mixture, called black powder, forms the basis of modern fireworks. It is made up of 75% potassium nitrate,15% charcoal and 10% sulfur. Charcoal and sulfur (fuel) catch fire easily and burn quickly, producing lots of heat, while the potassium nitrate releases oxygen. This chemical reaction produces lots of hot gases, and if the powder is inside a thick cardboard tube, the rapidly expanding gases create huge pressure, leading to an explosion.
As it burns, black powder gives off an orangey light, so fireworks experts add different metal salts (chemical substances that contain metals) to create a rainbow of colours. Strontium burns with a red flame, sodium flames are yellow, lithium burns bright pink, copper compounds give a ghostly blue colour, and barium gives a green light.
Safety is ensured by a fuse, a length of flammable (易燃的)string that provides time to reach a safe distance. In a rocket, the fuse ignites (引燃)a “lifting charge” of black powder at the base, whose downward jet of gas pushes the firework skyward. High in the air, a second “bursting charge” explodes. This ignites the surrounding “stars” — small balls containing black powder and metal salts, which are carefully arranged to create specific patterns like circles and hearts in the night sky.
32. What does the author try to show by mentioning the earliest fireworks?
A. The invention of fireworks was an unexpected accident.
B. They were developed through successful medical research.
C. Sulfur and charcoal alone made up their chemical mixture.
D. Animal waste still plays a part in modern firework production.
33. How do modern fireworks achieve their variety of colors?
A. By using various types of oxygen providers.
B. By burning the black powder itself.
C. By improving the original mixture.
D. By applying metal-containing compounds.
34. What makes fireworks display various shapes like hearts in the sky?
A. The power of the lifting charge.
B Different lengths of the fuse.
C. The careful arrangement of “stars”.
D. Different amounts of gas pressure.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Colorful History of Chinese Fireworks.
B. From Toilets to Sky: Science Behind Fireworks.
C. From Fuse to Flash: Safe Fireworks Production.
D. The Chemical Reactions of Fireworks.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a cold, late afternoon, and the sky was dark and heavy. The wind blew hard through the quiet streets of the small coastal town, shaking the empty shops and making the sea rough and wild. I walked home from school, my backpack full of books, and my head full of worry about the coming exams. The town felt empty — no one was outside, just the sound of rain and the wind howling in my ears.
Then I heard something — a soft, weak cry. I stopped and looked around. Through the heavy rain, I saw a small figure under the broken roof of a closed shop. It was a boy, maybe five or six years old, shaking and wet all over. His clothes stuck to him, and his face was pale and scared.
I hesitated. Should I help? What if it was dangerous? But then he looked up. His eyes were wide and full of fear, and something inside me changed. I couldn’t just leave.
I walked slowly toward him, holding out my umbrella. “Hey,” I said softly. “Are you okay? Where’s your family?” He shook his head, tears mixing with the rain. “I...I can’t find my mom,” he whispered. My chest felt tight. It was getting dark, and the storm wasn’t stopping. I checked my phone — no signal. I took a deep breath. “It’s going to be okay,” I said, more to myself than to him, “I’ll help you.”
I took off my jacket and put it around his shoulders. “What’s your name?” I asked. “Liam,” he said quietly. Then I remembered — a missing child poster I saw that morning. “Liam, age 6, last seen near the harbor.” The harbor was dangerous in this storm. Sea water would surge up at any time.
“Let’s go to the police station,” I said, holding out my hand. He looked at me, and then slowly took it. His hand was cold, but he held on tight.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We struggled forward, battling wind and rising water.

At last, we reached the police station.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 We struggled forward, battling wind and rising water. The wind seemed determined to push us back, and the water was getting deeper with every step. Liam was scared, his small body trembling even more. I held his hand tightly, trying to give him some courage. “Don’t worry, Liam. We’ll be safe soon,” I shouted over the howling wind. I kept an eye on the surrounding, looking for any possible danger. The rain lashed our faces, but we didn’t stop. We were both focused on reaching a safe place.
At last, we reached the police station. I pushed the door open, and we rushed inside, both soaked. The police officers were surprised to see us. I quickly explained the situation. They recognized Liam from the missing-child poster. One officer immediately called Liam’s parents. Moments later, his mom rushed in, crying with relief. She hugged Liam tightly and then turned to me, thanking me with tears in her eyes. I felt a warm glow inside. Despite the cold and the difficult journey, I was glad I had helped Liam find his family.

Located on the US-Canada border, the Great Lakes make up 84% of North America’s surface fresh water and are a source of drinking water for over 30 million people.
Lake Huron
Lake Huron is the second-largest Great Lake and boasts the world’s longest shoreline. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects almost 100 historic shipwrecks, the oldest dating back to the mid-1800s, often referred to as “shipwreck alley”.
Lake Michigan
The only Great Lake entirely in the United States, is Lake Michigan. The Indiana Dunes National Park provides a home for a variety of wildlife. Lake Michigan also features more than 50 lighthouses, the most among the five lakes.
Lake Superior
Lake Superior is the largest, coldest and deepest of the Great Lakes and the biggest freshwater lake in the world. Within the lake is Isle Royale National Park where wolves, moose, and western painted turtles live.
Lake Erie
Lake Erie is the warmest and shallowest, which attracts migratory birds. In the 1960s, Lake Erie experienced severe water pollution and was thought to be dying. But thanks to the ecologists’ joint efforts by Canada and the US, water quality has improved significantly over the decades.
Lake Ontario
The smallest of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario holds almost four times the water of Lake Erie. Water from the other four lakes flows into Ontario, which features several special sights. Ontario recently drew scientific attention from experts and college students, who set out on a mission to create 3D digital models of 17 shipwrecks in the region.

B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
B. Different lengths of the fuse.

“Let’s go to the police station” I said, holding out my hand. He looked at me, and then slowly took it. His hand was cold, but he held on tight.
