It was a cold and snowy morning after the winter vacation. Actually, it was my first day at my new school. I was walking slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was 7:00 in the morning and there weren’t many people on the road. A girl on a bike passed me quickly. She was riding on ice when suddenly she fell off her bike a few steps in front of me. She was trying hard to get up but fell once more. Without thinking, I went over and helped her stand up. She said, “Thank you,” with a smile and then rode away. The words “Thank you” warmed me and this small event made me feel less nervous about my new school.
Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and asked me to sit down beside a girl. I was so nervous. I knew some of the students were looking at me but I didn’t dare to look at them. Soon the first class started. It was English. They used a different textbook from my old school and I didn’t have a copy. As I was wondering what to do, a book appeared in front of me. “Let’s share,” the girl next to me said. “And hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped that morning. What a surprise!
From then on, we became good friends. She was my first and best friend at my new school. Helping her also helped me find a friend.

Once a year, Ursula Bannister climbs to High Rock Lookout, a viewpoint near Ashford, Washington. She usually hikes with someone along the 3.2-mile path. Last August, Bannister, then 79, went on her own. When she headed back down, her foot got caught in a hole in the ground. She fell forward.
“By the time I sat up, my foot was pointing the wrong way. I knew right away I had broken my leg,” Bannister says. She cried out for help, and before long, a stranger approached and called 911. They were told a search and rescue team would arrive.
“It wasn’t very encouraging, and the pain was pretty serious.” Bannister says.
At the very moment, two young men, Troy May and Layton Allen, came over to see what was going on. When they saw Bannister on the ground in great pain, they made an offer: They could carry the injured woman to the bottom of the path.
“I knew I was capable of carrying her down,” says May, then 20. “I really didn’t make much of a decision; I just knew I needed to carry her down if I could.”
Considerate May eased Bannister onto his back and started hiking downward. He carried her for most of the nearly three-hour journey, and Allen carried her for the rest.
During the long hike down, her rescuers shared stories and asked Bannister about her own life to take her mind off the mounting pain.
Once they reached the parking lot, Allen drove Bannister to the Tacoma General Hospital, about two hours away, and May followed them in his car. At the hospital, Bannister learned that she had broken her leg in three places. Bannister said that doctors told her the damage likely would have been worse if she had waited longer to get medical attention.
During her recovery, May and Allen have checked in several times.
“I think we’ll be friends for a really long time,” Bannister says.

10. Which of the following words can best describe May?

Conflict between parents and children is normal. It is part of family life. But conflict that goes on for a long time and gets worse over time can cause stress and can hurt relationships. It is important to communicate with each other and bring conflict to a peaceful solution. You can do this through compromise (让步) or by agreeing to disagree. No matter what else you do, communicate with your children and make sure they know that you love them. This can make dealing with conflict easier and more effective.
In some cases, you may have to change your behaviour to settle a conflict with your child. Some of your child’s behaviour may be a reaction to your behaviour. So, if you want your child to behave in a certain way, one way may be to change your behaviour so that your child will follow your model.
But children should be responsible for their own actions and the results. All parents want to protect their children. But in some cases, unless the child is in physical danger, it may be best to let the child deal with the negative results of things they do.
Collaborate (合作) to develop specific rules and write them down. These may include statements such as how much time they can spend on electronics, and when homework must be completed. Not only are you modeling for your kids how to work together and resolve differences, but also you are working out important guidelines for how your house will operate. Have clear results for misconduct. Thus, if your child disobeys the rules, make it clear that the right to use the toy will be taken away because of his inability to play with it responsibly. Additionally, create routines so that they know when they have free time to themselves after they have completed tasks set out for them. These could include helping feed the family pet, taking a shower, or finishing homework.
12. What's the key to solving the conflict between parents and children?
A. Advising children to give in. B. Changing their behaviors.
C. Reaching an understanding. D. Developing some rules.
13. Why do parents need to change their behavior first in the conflict?
A. To compromise with their children. B. To take responsibility for their actions.
C. To find a reason to punish children. D. To set a good example for children.
14. What should parents do if the child does something bad?
A. Teach him how to solve it. B. Handle the situation for him.
C. Let him deal with it himself. D. Share the solutions with him.
15. Whom is the text written to?
A. Parents. B. Children. C. Teachers. D. Students.

Making Friends Online
With science and technology developing rapidly, a growing number of people have been making friends online.
Admittedly the Internet makes it convenient for us to befriend people around the world, which has also broadened our horizons. Besides, with the aid of the Internet, we can keep in close touch with whoever we want to remain friends with, wherever they are.
But as the saying goes, every coin has two sides. There exist some drawbacks as well in terms of online friendship. People often say that on the Internet nobody knows whether you are a dog or not. So the friends we have made online may not be just what we think they are. Then, it is most likely that we’ll get cheated by the so-called friends.
Everything taken into consideration, we are supposed to have a reasonable attitude towards making friends online and think carefully before throwing yourself into it.
