(本试卷总分100分,考试时间40分钟。)
第一部分阅读(共8小题;每小题5分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Brown bears have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. In their 20s,
my parents spent their summers running one of Alaska's first brown bear viewing camps
in the Katmai National Park.Brown bears were respected in our household, and we
regarded them as individuals with their own personalities. My parents'five years as bear
guides,in the mid-1980s,took place during a key change in Alaska, where brown bear
tourism had previously been hunting.
Biologists were learning to read brown bears'behavior, challenging longtime ideas
that bears were unpredictable(不可预测的).They discovered that if humans behaved
equally predictably-by limiting visitors to small guided groups, respecting the bears'
behavior and space, and never feeding the animals human food-the bears could accept
the human presence over time. The bear guides learned the lesson the hard way when a
door once blew open to a summer house where some fruit had been left on a table. After a
bear got in,it ate up everything and sat on the floor for days, wanting more.
The memories that stand out most were the bears'unbelievable weakness and trust in
humans:a female bear chose to nurse its babies in front of my camera;a bear got close to
my father and me so it could take a rest beside us in the shade. What I didn't realize as a
child was that such moments could take place only because of how the land was protected
and managed.
One of the greatest dangers to brown bears is losing their homes in nature.Around
the world, brown bears now live in just 2%of the places they used to live.Almost all of
America's remaining brown bears make their home in Alaska.Katmai's huge, untouched
wilderness is very special-one bear might travel over 50 miles every summer just to find
food for winter. It's hard to understand why protecting this land is so important-until
you see a mother bear with her baby with your own eyes.
1.What was the main change in Alaska's brown bear tourism during the 1980s?
A.More people started hunting bears.
B.People preferred guided tours to visiting on their own.
C.Bear viewing took the place of hunting as the main activity.
D.The government prevented humans from getting close to brown bears.
2.How can visitors help make bears'behavior predictable?
A.By directing their own behavior.
B.By teaching the bear guides some lessons.
C.By challenging the bears'unpredictability.
D.By learning to read brown bears'behavior.

Though fireworks on bonfire night bring joy to many people,it is likely to be a night
of fright and pain for the UK's geese ()
Research by Anglia Ruskin University has found that fireworks displays (
cause wild birds to suffer significant pain, and researchers have suggested that displays
should not take place in areas with large wildlife populations.A study, published in the
journal Conservation Physiology,is one of the first carried out into the effects of
fireworks on wildlife. It found that the heart rate of geese increases by 96%when they are
influenced by fireworks displays.
The study involved 20 wild greylag geese fitted with recorders to record their heart
rate and body temperature, which are measures of physiological stress.Claudia Wascher,
who led the research, found that the average heart rate increased from 63 to 124 beats per
minute, and their average body temperature increased from 38C to 39C,in the first hour
of fireworks displays. It took the geese about five hours before the birds displayed normal
body temperatures, with average readings returning by 5 am.
"Ours is one of the first scientific studies to examine whether fireworks disturb (
wildlife. There have been previous studies showing that fireworks can cause anxiety in
pets, for example in dogs, but little research has been done into how animals in the wild
react. We need to carry out further research to conclusively tell whether the geese are
reacting to the noise or the light pollution from the fireworks,or a combination of both.
Many people get a lot of enjoyment from fireworks but it's important that we consider
animals both pets and wildlife-whenever planning a display,"Wascher said.
5.What advice do researchers give according to the findings of the study?
A.Geese should be protected especially at night.
B.Great attention should be paid to the UK's geese.
C.Fireworks displays should be held without harming wildlife.
D.Fireworks displays should take place to bring joy to people.
6.Why were 20 wild greylag geese fitted with recorders?
A.To compare the heart rates among them.
B.To make them safe and sound in the wild.
C.To keep their body temperature normal.
D.To measure their physiological stress.

displays?
A.About five hours.
B.About four hours.
C.About two hours.
D.About one hour.
8.What may be Wascher's further research about?
A.The relations between light pollution from fireworks and geese.

body damage from the oil before the rescue workers cleaned them.Besides, the oil
damaged their weak feathers,15 which they would be left in cold in winter. And the
oil-affected feathers make it difficult for the penguins to swim or hunt for food.16,
the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks called on knitting-lovers
worldwide to knit sweaters for the penguins. These sweaters are given to penguins in
