As a boy,I wanted to go to the South Pole.As a teenager,I decided I'd like to go to the
North Pole too.And yet,I haven't done either. It had taken me 31 years to just make it to the
Arctic.
I was traveling with a film crew from Northern Ireland, following the footsteps of Lord
Dufferin who,in the 1850s,sailed from Scotland to the Arctic. As an early adventure tourist,
he was driven by the desire to see what lay at the ends of the world.
As we sailed north, icebergs of the size of buses floated past our small boat. Finally,we
reached our destination-English Bay,where Dufferin landed and stepped off onto the
horseshoe-shaped beach.
This was what I'd dreamt of:standing somewhere so pure and primitive. However, for
many early polar explorers, the results were far less pleasant. The south,in particular, was
source of extreme danger.
My childhood interest in the South Pole was fueled by the unsuccessful yet heroic
expedition of Emest Shackleton. He died in 1922 while preparing for his fourth adventure.
The stories of Robert Falcon Scott are also well-known:he and four companions died on their
way back from the South Pole.
So why do explorers put themselves at such risk?
Much of it seems to lie in the purity of the challenge.Scott talked of the appeal of a
place that had been "unreached and unseen by humans.""With a view over shining lands
covered by ice-sheets of unimaginable extent, you have the feeling of living over the control
of death,"said Fridtjof Nansen,a Norwegian explorer.
On the homeward journey the weather turned and we were left for a few days at the
mercy of a storm. We experienced a small taste of helplessness when faced with the raw
power of nature. We should be grateful for the great explorers'spirit and stories.I know I am.

A.They were trapped in icebergs.

We all notice bright colors.People who choose to go eye-catching,whether they
express themselves through clothes or accessories(配饰),hear everything from“No one is
going to miss you at the party"to "I would never have the courage to wear that."But
according to research, those comments may be both accurate and expected.
Adam D.Pazda and Christopher A.Thorstenson (2019)examined how we perceive
people at first impression who wear bright colors. They specifically examined the effect of
chroma ()They found that targets, both male and female, who were wearing or
surrounded by high-chroma colors were perceived as more open and outgoing than in a
low-chroma setting. They concluded that chroma is a variable of perception that can influence
first impressions of personality.
Drilling down further, they found that high-chroma colors strengthened viewer
perspective of openness and extraversion(外向),but not other personalities. These
observations are important because some job responsibilities capitalize on some of the
personalities inferred through bright colors.
Pazda and Thorstenson recognize what job seekers no doubt consider as they look for a
career to match their personal nature:in some occupations, success is fueled by possessing
certain personality qualities. They give examples of industries such as sales and marketing as
well as customer service as fields where extraverts thrive ()Accordingly,applicants for
these positions may be viewed more favorably and judged as more competent if they wear
highly chromatic clothing.
Regarding the generality of their results,Pazda and Thorstenson note that one of the
limitations of their study was their use of participants living in the United States, which means
their findings may not predict results in other cultures. They note the possibility that chroma
may influence the perception of personality differently in non-Western countries, and that
high-chroma clothing may be perceived as at odds with social norms in other cultures. The
practical outcome,at least in the United States, appears to be that bright colors, like the
peacock's tail, will get you noticed. But depending on your goals, consider tailoring your
chroma to the situations, personally and professionally.

30.Which might be a limitation of the study?

C.The outdated data analysis methods.D.The relatively insufficient theoretical basis

A.Reserve bright colors for social events.
B.Always wear bright colors to be noticed
C.Avoid bright colors in professional settings.
D.Use bright colors strategically based on your goals

"Individuals of all ages who have empathy (understand that sometimes telling
little white lies can protect other people from getting hurt,"says Barbara Greenberg,a clinical
psychologist in Connecticut."Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies
because they understand that 100 percent honesty all the time is not beneficial."A white lie,
she explains, spares people from unnecessary hurt.
At the same time,Dr.Julia Breur,a marriage and family therapist in Florida,
emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the way we respond to someone. The fact is
that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you;it's not just about the
person the white lie is being told to.For example, she says someone who always tells others
that"all is good when it comes to a sick parent in an effort to avoid discussions about how
serious their health issue really is,can eventually face stressful experiences. When that parent
eventually passes away, the person who always gave an "all is good"response ends up
emotionally broken.
Sometimes, telling white lies often depends on the situation,Dr.Breur says. For
example, consider a woman who has not seen her mother for several months. The daughter
has gained noticeable weight, yet the mother responds by excitedly declaring that she looks
great."I emphasize during psychotherapy sessions with my patients that context helps define
meaning,"Dr.Breur says."So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great
when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight,it can be acceptable. It reflects the
intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love.Otherwise,
white lies-especially when told to avoid personal accountability-can start a cycle of
mistrust between people, ultimately damaging integrity,"she adds.
Therefore,it's important to ask ourselves when it is and isn't suitable to deliver the
honest truth, and when it's best to step back and offer a more delicate response.More often
than not,it's about finding a balance between the two.
32.What can be learned about white lies according to Barbara Greenberg?
A.They are short-lived.
B.They are unidentifiable.
C.They are trouble-making.
D.They are reasonable.
第5页共10页
33.What message does Dr.Breur deliver in paragraph 2?
A.White lies can harm both the liars and the listeners.
B.We must respond to our family members truthfully
C.It's wrong to tell white lies to a seriously ill parent
D.The"all is good"response is effective in dealing with patients.
34.Which kind of white lie would probably be preferred by Dr.Breur?
A.The student refuses to hand in his homework by say ing the dog has eaten it.
B.A man who wants to impress someone says he's read all books in the world.
C.The son's test scores aren't satisfactory but his father says he's made great progress.
D.The girl replies,"I'm fine,"for she doesn't want to burden others with her problems.
35.Which of the following statements does the author's agree with?
A.East or west, white lies are the best.
B.Think twice before you tell white lies
C.White lies signify unconditional love.
D.White lies are empathetic people's favorable choice.

The Rise of“China-chic”
Over past years,guochao,or"China-chic"has been gaining popularity among Chinese
consumers.Guochao conveys the cultural heritage and values of China.36
“China-chic”is rising,but what is it?
The idea of guochao was first borrowed from some intemational brands, and began to
win over Chinese consumers in 2015.37.In 2018,Chinese sportswear band Li-Ning
presented its Wu Dao (the principles of Taoism)collection at the New York Fashion Week.It
featured bright red color and Chinese characters.More brands have since followed, promising
the early period of guochao.
_38.This was a period when applications of big data, cloud computing, the
Internet of Things, and 5G technology hit the market one after another.Domestic tech
companies such as Huawei,Xiaomi, and DJI made headlines.
In its third stage, guochao became more common in everyday life.Over the past decade,
guochao has expanded from consumer goods to experiential products. As consumers are
showing greater interest in cultural identity and creativity, productions like the TV program
National Treasure, and the dance show Night Banguet in Tang Dynasty Palace integrate
cultural and historical elements with the latest audio-visual technologies.39.
Nowadays, guochao is moving to the next stage. No matter how the trend evolves,
Chinese people's positive attitude toward the country's development and their recognition of
and growing confidence in national culture won't change. Its success will rely first and
foremost on gaining cultural confidence.Seen from a broader perspective, guochao mirrors
the rise of China,a country eager to make its presence felt globally.40,but more
importantly,it transmits culture and values.
A.Guochao is indeed a style
B.The trend grew in the following years
C.They give the viewers a totally new experience

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon

scolding (from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt
hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was impossible for her, since she had nothing
with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the seller busy doing his business.
However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller noticed the young girl and asked"Hey,do you want to have the noodles?"
"Oh,yes...but I don't have money on me..."she replied."That's nothing.I'll treat you
today,"said the man,"come in."The seller brought her a bowl of tasty noodles. As she was
eating,Jenny cried silently."What is it?asked the man kindly.
"I was just touched by your kindness!"said Jenny as she wiped her tears,"Even a
stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the
house. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled"I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked
me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the
times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?
Jenny sat there,speechless.She remembered mother's familiar face."Why didn't I think

for what she has done for me."
