Five years ago, a truly unforgettable event took place. My wife and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary (纪念日) that year. To our delight, it was a splendid event, lovingly hosted by our sons just for us. Our dear, old friends gave us a wonderful surprise with their thoughtful gifts and heartfelt congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove from Ontario into Alberta, then southward into Glacier National Park in Montana, and continued to Yellowstone National Park.
It was a cold spring day, and the Beartooth Highway had opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow there. The scenery was so impressive that we made lots of stops to record memories with my camera. At the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the centre of my camera lens.
There were not many cars on the road. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty clothes, parked behind our cars. Approaching us, he spoke only a simple command, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could offer our thanks. Unexpectedly, the photo he took is now one of the most valuable and prized of our trip.
In that unexpected encounter, I absorbed a lesson in the most unlikely of places. We should never judge a man by his appearance. To the motorcyclist who may one day read this story and remember us: we wish to extend our deepest appreciation and a heartfelt “Thank you” for the kindness you showed us that day.
41.What do we know about the trip?
A.It was a gift for their wedding anniversary. B.It was a suggestion from their friends.
C.It was in the late autumn five years ago. D.It was taken by train to the west.
42.What caused the couple to frequently pause on their trip along Beartooth Highway?
A.Road signs. B.Impressive scenery.
C.Car problems. D.Complex roadblocks.
43.Why was the author nervous when the motorcycle driver offered to take a picture?
A.He could have lost the camera.
B.The motorcycle driver would borrow the camera.
C.His wife might not be satisfied with the view there.
D.The motorcycle driver might not be good at the taking pictures.
44.Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle?
A.Rich and generous. B.Kind and straightforward.
C.Creative and capable. D.Careful and admirable.
45.Which of the following can be concluded from the passage?
A.No pains, no gains. B.Seeing is believing.
C.Don’t judge a book by its cover. D.The longest journey begins with the first step.
C
Climate change leads to rising temperatures, increased sea levels, and drought (干旱). However, its effects don’t end there — it can also change the taste of food.
In southwest Spain, black Iberian pigs look for food under centuries-old oak trees, a process key for the unique taste of the Jamon Iberico, a special cured ham (腌制火腿) made from these pigs. However, according to National Geographic, more heat waves and a five-year drought have reduced the number of the trees’ acorns (橡子) as well as the grass around them. Without these natural food sources, the pigs require extra feed, which changes the ham’s unique taste.
Drought also affects the taste of fruits. Watermelons, for example, show significant flavor changes during drought conditions. According to researchers at the Agrifood Research and Technology Center of Aragon in Spain, compounds (化合物) such as sugars build up during drought, changing the taste of food, either for better or for worse.
Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food flavors. Warm days and cool nights help fruits develop the best flavor by increasing their sugar content and acidity (酸度). However, global warming is changing this. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier because they bloom early and grow in higher temperatures. Oysters, which do best in a mix of salt and freshwater, are losing their unique taste because rising sea levels are making their environment too salty.
While the food we eat is affected by climate change, our food choices also impact the climate. Meat and milk products, especially from cows, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Raising animals for food makes up about 14.5 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, similar to the emissions from all vehicles combined. Producing animal protein (蛋白质) uses more land, energy and water than plant protein.
While this seems like a bad cycle, it can be broken. For example, The Good Food Institute, a US-based think tank, believes people will choose alternative proteins if they are as tasty and affordable as meat. Meanwhile, more farmers are practicing “greener” farming, and when people buy local, in-season produce, the impact on the environment is reduced.
46.What has caused the change in the flavor of Jamon Iberico?
A.The change in pig feeding methods due to new technology.
B.The introduction of new curing techniques.
C.The lack of natural feed for the pigs.
D.The use of other meat sources.
47.How does drought affect the taste of fruits according to the passage?
A.It decreases their acid levels.
B.It adds to their water content.
C.It increases their natural flavor.
D.It changes their taste for better or worse.
48.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.The choices we make about food influence the environment.
B.The comparison between plant and animal proteins.
C.The rising carbon footprint of food production.
D.The effects of farming on global warming.
49.What action can consumers take to fight climate change?
A.Eating less processed food.
B.Buying local and in-season food.
C.Supporting traditional farming practices.
D.Choosing animal protein over plant protein.
50.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.Shifts in Sea Levels
B.Changes on Your Plate
C.Droughts and Agriculture
D.Greenhouse Gas Emissions

It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.
People like the Secretary of Education simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they knock students. Nor do those who complain about falling academic standards.
The vast majority of the nation’s 12 million students are struggling to pay for their educations. They are part of the invisible workforce. Many hold down full-time jobs. They’re frying hamburgers, photographing weddings, working in construction, and waiting on tables. The fact that they even show up for classes is a wonderful event.
The financial situation of most students explains a lot about what is happening in schools. Why are the traditional courses so unpopular? Why are students flocking to accounting and computer science and any professional programs that seem to lead to careers?
Answer: Today’s working student has been forced into a kind of premature matter-of-fact way of viewing things. Romance is gone. The notion of transforming one’s self through study alone has disappeared. Today’s students seek freedom from manual labor, and the status conferred by a good job.
There are other consequences. Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework. That’s the secret behind falling academic standards. Students have become consumers. They want grades and certifications. Their professors can’t be expected to give a grade of failure to students who are clearly tired from the effort to pay their bills.
There’s a lot wrong with this situation. It’s twisting the definition of education out of shape. Worse, it’s creating a generation that is totally unpleasant. The brightest students turn out to be yuppies (雅皮士). The vast majority are, at least, good-natured semi-literates.
The time has run out for philosophical debates about fixed courses of study. What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support. If families can’t or won’t give it to their children, then the government should.
51.The author’s purpose in writing this article is to __________.
A.awaken the whole society to the problems today’s college students face
B.warn Americans that academic standards are falling
C.advise college students to study hard
D.provide a suggestion that only full-time students be enrolled
52.The most suitable word to describe the author’s feelings about today’s college students is _________.
A.criticize B.sympathize C.complain D.urge
53.Which of the following cannot be learned from the passage?
A.Many students are often absent from classes.
B.Traditional courses are not popular.
C.Students commit crimes with computers.
D.Students don’t devote much time and energy to their homework.
54.By saying “Romance is gone” in paragraph 5, the author means ____________.
A.today’s students do not believe in love stories any more
B.today’s students become more practical in dealing with things
C.students think there is no affection any more and break up with their lovers
D.today’s students hold matter-of-fact opinions on love
55.Which of the following suggestions will the author not agree with?
A.We should encourage students to give up full-time jobs.
B.Families should offer their children more help financially.
C.We should stand up and say something for today’s college students.
D.We should make more strict regulations to force students to study hard.
They asked Katherine Johnson for the moon, and she gave it to them. With little more than a pencil, a slide rule (计算尺) and one of the finest mathematical minds in the country, Mrs. Johnson, who died at 101 on Monday, calculated the precise track that would let Apollo 11 land on the moon in 1969 and, after Neil Armstrong’s history — making moonwalk, let it return to Earth.
Mrs. Johnson was one of several hundred strictly educated, supremely capable yet largely unrecognized women who, well before the modern feminist (男女平等主义者) movement, worked as NASA mathematicians. But it was not only her sex that kept her long unsung. For some years at midcentury, the black women were subjected to a double separation (隔离): They were kept separate from the much larger group of white women who in turn were separated from the agency’s male mathematicians and engineers.
Mrs. Johnson broke barriers at NASA.In old age, Mrs. Johnson became the most celebrated of the black women who served as mathematicians for the space agency. Their story was told in the 2016 Hollywood film Hidden Figures, which was nominated for three Oscars, including best picture.
In 2017, NASA dedicated a building in her honor. That year, The Washington Post described her as “the most high-profile of the computers” — “computers” being the term originally used to describe Mrs. Johnson and her colleagues, much as “typewriters” were used in the 19th century to represent professional typists.
She “helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space,” NASA’s administrator, Jim Bridenstine, said in a statement on Monday, “even as she made huge steps that also opened doors for women and people of color in the universal human quest to explore space.”
As Mrs. Johnson herself was fond of saying, her term at Langley — from 1953 until her retirement in 1986 — was “a time when computers wore skirts.”
56.What did Mrs. Johnson do as a NASA mathematicians, according to Paragraph 1? (no more than 15 words)
57.What barrier(s) did Mrs. Johnson have to break at NASA? (no more than 10 words)
58.How did NASA recognize Mr. Johnson’s contribution? (no more than 10 words)
59.What does the underlined phrases mean in the last paragraph? (no more than 10 words)
60.What do you learn from Mrs. Johnson’s experience? (no more than 20 words)

44.Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle?

根据文章第三段“According to researchers at the Agrifood Research and Technology Center of Aragon in Spain, compounds (化合物) such as sugars build up during drought, changing the taste of food, either for better or for worse.(据西班牙阿拉贡农业食品研究与技术中心的研究人员称,在干旱期间,诸如糖类等化合物会积聚,从而改变食物的味道,这种改变可能是变好,也可能是变差)”可知,干旱期间糖类等化合物积聚,会使水果的味道变好或变差。故选D。
根据文章第五段“While the food we eat is affected by climate change, our food choices also impact the climate. Meat and milk products, especially from cows, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Raising animals for food makes up about 14.5 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, similar to the emissions from all vehicles combined. Producing animal protein (蛋白质) uses more land, energy and water than plant protein.(虽然我们所食用的食物受到气候变化的影响,但我们的食物选择同样也对气候产生影响。肉类和奶制品,尤其是牛肉和牛奶,是温室气体排放的重要来源。饲养食用动物所产生的温室气体排放量约占全球总量的14.5%,这与所有交通工具的排放量之和相近。生产动物蛋白比生产植物蛋白需要更多的土地、能源和水)”可知,第五段讲述了我们的食物选择会对气候产生影响,并通过肉类和奶制品排放温室气体、生产动物蛋白消耗更多资源等例子进行说明。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Meanwhile, more farmers are practicing “greener” farming, and when people buy local, in-season produce, the impact on the environment is reduced.(与此同时,越来越多的农民正在践行“绿色”农业,而且当人们购买本地当季农产品时,对环境的影响也会降低)”可知,消费者购买本地当季农产品,对环境的影响会降低,这是消费者可以采取的应对气候变化的行动。故选B。
根据文章第一段“Climate change leads to rising temperatures, increased sea levels, and drought (干旱). However, its effects don’t end there — it can also change the taste of food.(气候变化导致气温上升、海平面升高以及干旱。然而,其影响远不止于此——它还能改变食物的味道)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了气候变化如何影响食物的味道和供应。由此可知,B“Changes on Your Plate(你餐盘里的变化)”既涵盖了气候变化导致食物味道改变这一内容,又能体现我们食物选择对环境及食物本身的影响,全面概括了文章主旨。故选B。
D
【答案】51.A 52.B 53.C 54.B 55.D
根据第一段“It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.(是时候有人为今天的大学生说话了。他们可能是美国最勤奋、最有抱负的人,但他们的问题却没有得到应有的重视)”及最后一段中的“What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support.(这个国家需要的是有人站出来说,在一个人的成长过程中,做一名全日制学生是一种值得支持的光荣召唤)”可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是唤醒整个社会对当今大学生面临的问题。故选A。
根据第一段“It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.(是时候有人为今天的大学生说话了。他们可能是美国最勤奋、最有抱负的人,但他们的问题却没有得到应有的重视)”可推知,用“同情”这个词来形容作者对当今大学生的感受再合适不过了。故选B。
53.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The fact that they even show up for classes is a wonderful event.(事实上,他们甚至出现在课堂上是一个美妙的事件)”及第四段中的“Why are the traditional courses so unpopular?(为什么传统的课程这样不受欢迎?)”及第六段中的“Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework.(今天的学生没有太多的时间和精力投入,进行独立研究甚至做认真的家庭作业)”可知,文章提到了“许多学生经常缺席课程、传统课程不受欢迎、学生没有在家庭作业上投入太多的时间和精力”,但是没有提到“学生用电脑犯罪”。故选C。
根据第五段中的“Today’s working student has been forced into a kind of premature matter-of-fact way of viewing things. Romance is gone. (今天的打工学生已经被迫采用一种过早的实事求是的方式来看待事物。浪漫已不复存在)”可推知,作者说“浪漫已不复存在”,是指现在的学生在处理事情方面变得更加实际了。故选B。
55.推理判断题。根据第一段“It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.(是时候有人为今天的大学生说话了。他们可能是美国最勤奋、最有抱负的人,但他们的问题却没有得到应有的重视)”及最后一段中的“What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support.(这个国家需要的是有人站出来说,在一个人的成长过程中,做一名全日制学生是一种值得支持的光荣召唤)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是唤醒整个社会对当今大学生面临的问题,对大学生充满了同情。
56.She calculated precise tracks for spaceships/astronauts to land on the moon and return to Earth. 57.Her sex and being a black woman.或 Being a black woman.或That she was a black woman. 58.NASA dedicated a building in her honor. 59.A time when women did all calculation.或 A time when calculation was done by women. 60.I’m convinced that knowledge is powerful enough to wipe out ignorance.或I think we should never be limited by the labels attached by others.
Johnson, who died at 101 on Monday, calculated the precise track that would let Apollo 11 land on the moon in 1969 and, let it return to Earth.(享年101岁的Mrs. Johnson于周一逝世,她在1969年计算了能让阿波罗11号着陆于月球以及返回地球的精确轨迹)”可知,作为美国宇航局的数学家,她计算了阿波罗着陆于月球和返回地球的精确轨迹,故答案为:She calculated precise tracks for spaceships/astronauts to land on the moon and return to Earth。
根据文章第二段“But it was not only her sex that kept her long unsung. For some years at midcentury, the black women were subjected to a double separation (隔离): They were kept separate from the much larger group of white women who in turn were separated from the agency’s male mathematicians and engineers.(但让她长期默默无闻的不仅仅是她的性别。在本世纪中叶的一些年里,黑人女性受到了双重隔离:她们与更大的白人女性群体分开,而白人女性又与该机构的男性数学家和工程师分开)”可知,在美国宇航局,Mrs. Johnson想要获得一席之地,她必须要打破性别和种族歧视两大障碍,故答案为:Her sex and being a black woman.或 Being a black woman.或That she was a black woman。
根据文章第四段“In 2017, NASA dedicated a building in her honor.(2017年,美国宇航员为了纪念她,修建了一栋建筑楼)”可知,美国宇航局为了纪念Mrs. NASA dedicated a building in her honor。
根据文章最后一段“As Mrs. Johnson herself was fond of saying, her term at Langley — from 1953 until her retirement in 1986 — was ‘a time when computers wore skirts.’(正如Mrs. Johnson她自己所喜欢的那个说法一样,她在Langley的那段时期是“电脑穿上裙子的时期”)”可知,从1953年到1986年间,Mrs. Johnson冲破障碍,为女性数学家在宇航局获得了一席之地,故此处的“a time when computers wore skirts”是指在这一时期,宇航局相关的计算都是由女性主导的,其中“skirts”就是指“女性”,故答案为:A time when women did all calculation. 或 A time when calculation was done by women。
I’m convinced that knowledge is powerful enough to wipe out ignorance.或I think we should never be limited by the labels attached by others。

D.The effects of farming on global warming.
49.What action can consumers take to fight climate change?
A.Eating less processed food.
B.Buying local and in-season food.
C.Supporting traditional farming practices.
D.Choosing animal protein over plant protein.
