The coach agreed and said, “Leave your son with me. I’m sure he’ll change in three months. But you can’t visit him during this time.” The father said OK. Three months later, as they had promised, the father came back to get his son. The coach set up a friendly match between the boy and an experienced boxer to show the training result. As soon as the match started, the boy was knocked down hard. But to everyone’s surprise, he quickly got up and faced his opponent again. He was knocked down again right away, but he got back on his feet immediately. This happened over and over. The boy was knocked down 16 times, but each time he stood up bravely, ready to face the challenge. The coach then asked the father, “Do you think your son’s performance shows courage?” The father, who felt a bit ashamed, said, “I’m really disappointed. I didn’t think he would still be knocked down so easily after three months of training here.” The coach shook his head and said, “I feel sorry for you. You don’t get it. You only see the times he falls and the simple winning or losing. Don’t you see the courage and the strength of will of your son to get up each time? That’s real power. Now in a study, researchers have found that the microplastic (微塑料) pollution in deep water is much more serious than that on the sea surface. “What we’ve known about microplastic has been from the sea surface,” says Kyle Van Houtan, “but this study suggests there’s a larger number that’s unnoticed.” Microplastics are small pieces that break off from plastic bottles or bags as they change to simpler chemical forms in the environment. They have different sizes and can be found anywhere, including in the oceans, lakes, soil and even blowing in the air. To study microplastic pollution in the deep sea, Houtan’s team collected samples (样本) in the sea by using an ROV (遥控潜水器). As the ROV went down from 5 to 1,000 meters below the sea surface, a special machine filtered (过滤) the sample water and kept the small particles (微粒). Back in the lab, the team used another machine to find out the types of plastic present. Their findings are based only on a certain area, and if the results hold for the wider ocean environment, the amount of plastic in the midwater would be worrying, because this is the key living environment for most sea animals. The final effect is still unknown, but what is for certain, Houtan says, is that “this is a serious problem, and it shows humans can change natural systems.” Yet in other ways, “the results are encouraging,” he says. Since most of the microplastic waste comes from single-use plastic, this means we could reduce microplastic pollution by cutting down on the production and use of the unnecessary plastic products. 36.Houtan’s team used ROV to ________. A.filter the sample water B.collect samples in the sea C.examine the chemicals D.record the depth of water 37.The writer develops Paragraph 3 by ________. A.listing the number of the findings B.describing the course of the study C.drawing the result of the study D.explaining the cause of the pollution 38.We can learn from the study that ________. A.midwater holds a large number of microplastic particles in the sea B.recycling is a useful way to reduce microplastic pollution C.most sea animals live on the sea surface D.the sea surface is more polluted than the midwater 39.The best title for the passage is ________. A.Humans and Natural Systems B.A New Way to Look for Ocean Plastic C.The Hidden Plastic World in the Deep Sea D.The Growing Problem of Sea Pollution 40.We can infer (推断) that the following part of the passage is about ________. A.how to cut down on the production and use of unnecessary plastic products B.how to deal with the unnecessary plastic products C.how to develop plastic products D.how to protect the natural system D Laughter is a universal (全世界的) language for humans. It can help people to get on well with others. As children, we laugh when our parents make faces. Then we start to make others laugh like this. That’s how we learn to play jokes. But is playing jokes only humans’ ability? Scientists have found that some animals also have the ability. Sometimes we see dogs play jokes on each other. They come near slowly and then quickly run away. They may just want to have fun. It is also said that they could deal with their stress this way. Scientists say they have watched young apes (类人猿) play jokes. The young apes quietly follow adult apes and touch them secretly to surprise them. Then they playfully wait and watch what the adults would do. This action is similar to what human children do. Next time, when you find your pets doing something strange around you, maybe they are playing jokes on you. 根据短文内容,判断下列各句正(T)、误(F)。 41.As a universal language, laughter can help people to get on well with others. 42.Not only humans but also some animals have the ability to play jokes. 43.Four kinds of animals are mentioned in the passage. 44.The young apes run away quickly after they touch the adult apes secretly. 45.When we find our pets doing something strange around us, they must be playing jokes on us. A.how to cut down on the production and use of unnecessary plastic products B.how to deal with the unnecessary plastic products C.how to develop plastic products D.how to protect the natural system 【答案】36.B 37.B 38.A 39.C 40.A 【导语】本文介绍了一项关于深海微塑料污染的研究,指出深海中微塑料污染比海面更严重,并讨论了其可能的影响和减少污染的途径。 36.细节理解题。根据“To study microplastic pollution in the deep sea, Houtan’s team collected samples (样本) in the sea by using an ROV (遥控潜水器).”可知,研究团队使用遥控潜水器收集海水样本。故选B。 37.细节理解题。根据“To study microplastic pollution in the deep sea...Back in the lab, the team used another machine to find out the types of plastic present.”可知,第三段描述了研究团队使用遥控潜水器收集样本,在潜水器下降过程中特殊机器过滤采样海水并保留微粒,回到实验室再用另一台机器确定塑料类型,即第三段描述了研究的过程。故选B。 38.推理判断题。根据“if the results hold for the wider ocean environment, the amount of plastic in the midwater would be worrying”可推知,从研究中我们可以了解到中层水域含有大量的微塑料颗粒。故选A。 39.最佳标题题。根据“Now in a study, researchers have found that the microplastic (微塑料) pollution in deep water is much more serious than that on the sea surface.”及全文可知,文章主要围绕深海存在被忽视的严重微塑料污染展开,所以“The Hidden Plastic World in the Deep Sea”(深海隐藏的塑料世界)可作为文章标题。故选C。 40.推理判断题。根据“Since most of the microplastic waste comes from single-use plastic, this means we could reduce microplastic pollution by cutting down on the production and use of the unnecessary plastic products.”可知,由于大多数微塑料废物来自一次性塑料,这意味着我们可以通过减少不必要塑料制品的生产和使用来减少微塑料污染。由此推断,文章接下来会介绍如何减少不必要塑料制品的生产和使用。故选A。 D Laughter is a universal (全世界的) language for humans.
