Do dogs make better pets than cats?
Amy and Jack share their opinions about two of the world’s most loved pets. Are dogs really better pets than cats?“Dogs are man’s best friends,” says Amy.
I strongly believe dogs are better pets than cats. First, dogs are loyal friends. They can often feel people’s emotions and show care by staying close and quiet. Many people talk to their dogs when they are upset, because dogs listen 1 and make them feel better and not so alone.
What’s more, keeping a dog keeps you 2 . Dog owners walk their pets every day, which is good exercise for both dogs and humans. It also helps people spend more time outdoors and enjoy nature.
Finally, you can teach them 3 like sitting, fetching, shaking hands or even more difficult commands. Training your dog builds a strong connection between you and makes owning a dog very rewarding.
That’s why dogs, with their loyalty and energy, make such great pets.“Cats make just as good pets,” says Jack.
In my view, cats are just as good as dogs—maybe even better. First, cats have a long history of being 4 . In ancient Egypt, they were treated like gods, and they’ve been important to humans for centuries, showing their lasting value.

6 , while dogs are great pets, cats have special advantages that make them even better.

In fact, cats tend to love boxes of all shapes and sizes. Honestly, you should try it. Just drop a box in front of them. The next thing you will see is real 2 on your cat’s face.
One reason is that cats are predators (捕食性动物) by nature. This is why they prefer to be 3 on all sides. This helps them to ambush (伏击) their prey (猎物). Of course, they’re not going to attack someone every time they are playing around in a box. But it’s their natural behavior to act this way.
Another explanation is about how cats deal with stress. Cats are very 4 facing difficult situations. They find it easier to simply run away instead. A box offers them the opportunity to escape from the outside world. Staying in a small box gives them a sense of security.
Claudia Vinke, a Dutch scientist, did a(n) 5 about the stress levels of cats. She first divided many cats into two groups. She gave the first group empty boxes and not the other. Then, she let both groups of cats stay with strangers. After several experiments, she found that the cats in the first group were more friendly and comfortable with the people around them. 6 , it could be said that the cats got comfort and security from being able to stay in the boxes.
It should be noted that not all cats love boxes. But for most cats that do, these are some of the most widely believed reasons.

Has a person ever warmly held a door open for you? How do you feel after playing with friends? And what would you say is your favourite family memory? Having a good memory is key to learning effectively. But if you’ve ever found it hard to remember information even after reading your notes repeatedly, perhaps you’re not studying in the best way.
While there are many 1 that can help you remember things better, the most effective ones involve making meaningful connections between pieces of information. This idea is called the Baker/baker paradox, and it was 2 in an experiment.
In the experiment, researchers divided people into two groups and showed them a photo of a man’s face. One group was told the man’s name was Baker, while the other was told the man worked as a baker. A few days later, the researchers asked both groups about the man’s identity.
The results were 3 . People remembered the man’s job more easily than his name, even though both words were the same. Why did this happen? After all, the word “baker” was the same for both people.
Here’s the 4 : when you hear that someone works as a baker, your mind connects this fact to a network of meaningful ideas. You might picture someone baking bread, wearing a tall white hat, or smelling of freshly baked goods. These connections create a story in your brain, making the information easier to recall.
5 , the name “Baker” doesn’t form the same kind of meaningful connections. It’s only linked to the man’s face, which is a weak connection. If you forget the face, you may also forget the name 6 .
The Baker/baker paradox shows that memory works best when new information is tied to meaningful stories or images. So, if you want to remember something better, try linking it to a story or something familiar. This simple trick can make all the difference.

Read in phrases rather than word by word.
Don’t 1 each word while you read. Practice reading in phrases—groups of words that go together.
Engage your 2 .
Good readers visualize what they are reading. They create a movie in their heads of the story they are reading. As you read, try sharing with a partner the kinds of pictures that you create in your mind.
3 subvocalization.
Subvocalization means quietly saying the words as you read. You might be whispering the words or just silently saying them in your mind. Your eyes and brain can read much faster than you can speak. If you subvocalize, you can only read as fast as you can say the words. As you read, place your finger on your lips or your throat. Do you feel 4 ? If so, you are subvocalizing. Practice reading without moving your lips.
Don’t worry about understanding every word.
Sometimes, as readers, we think we must understand the meaning of everything that we read. It isn’t always 5 to understand every word in a passage in order to understand the meaning of the passage as a whole. Instead of interrupting your reading to find the meaning of a new word, circle the word and come back to it after you have finished reading.

My grandfather is 72 and last month my grandmother celebrated her 70th birthday. I first noticed that they were having trouble remembering things when I went to their flat for dinner. Another time we arranged to go out for dinner together. My mother told my grandfather to meet us at the station. My grandparents were not there when we arrived. My mother phoned them and my grandfather said they were at home waiting for us. They knew we were having dinner together but they forgot about the meeting place. Even though my memory is good, I make a list of things I need to bring to school the next day before I go to bed. It’s a good 3 to prevent me from forgetting anything. I talked with the school nurse and she said that eating fruit and fish can improve memory. She also said that drinking water helps improve 4 and that can also make it easier to remember things. I wrote these suggestions on a piece of paper and gave it to my grandparents.

The famous poet Lu You lived in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127—1279). During his lifetime, the Southern Song Dynasty was threatened by the Jin Dynasty’s invasion (侵略) from the north.
Lu You loved his homeland deeply. As an official in the court, he always said, “We must 1 the Jin invaders!” But many other officials wanted to give up. So, they tried hard to push Lu You aside. They kept telling the emperor that Lu You loafed about every day and did nothing. He only enjoyed flowers and wrote poems all day long, they said. Finally, the emperor believed them. 2 , Lu You lost his job.
He went back to his hometown in sorrow. He often enjoyed himself in nature to 3 his sad feelings.
One sunny day, the poet went hiking to relax himself. After climbing up a slope, he saw mountains and waters ahead. They looked wonderful! Though there was no way to lead him directly there, Lu You managed to continue making his way in the forest.
After walking around the foot of the hill, he found himself in front of a very large piece of farmland. There was a small village with tens of houses. With green willows and colorful flowers all around, it looked so beautiful.
Lu You was very glad and entered the village. The villagers warmly welcomed their 4 . They talked with him and prepared hearty meals to receive him. The friendly people and their simple lifestyle moved Lu You very much. He put this 5 in the poem A Visit to a Village to the West of the Hill (《游山西村》).

From April to October 2025, Japan successfully hosted the World Expo in Osaka. Under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, the event was a huge success, attracting millions of visitors from around the world. It was not just a(n) 1 ; it was a global conversation about how technology and ideas could create a better, more sustainable world for everyone. The Expo showed that by working together, we can solve big problems like climate change and resource shortage. It was a celebration of human creativity and progress.
One of the most impressive aspects of the Expo was its focus on 2 solutions. The “Robot Alley” section showed how robots could assist in daily life, such as providing company for the elderly and helping with household chores. In the “Future Mobility” zone, visitors experienced self-driving vehicles and other advanced transport systems that 3 clearer air and less traffic in our cities. There was also a section on future farming, showing how technology can grow more food with less water. Sustainability was at the heart of the event. The pavilions were built using recycled materials, and the entire operation aimed to produce nearly zero waste, setting a new standard for large international events. Solar panels provided most of the energy, and water was recycled on site.
Over 150 countries participated, each offering a unique perspective in their national pavilions. The Japan Pavilion amazed crowds with its interactive AI exhibits, while the China Pavilion, named “The Seed of Hope”, 4 green technology and space exploration, inspiring many young minds. Have you ever come home from a vacation feeling more tired than you were before you left? Through traveling, most people expect a break from their 1 lives. However, as they rush from one place to another, they aren’t really able to take a good rest.
Now, imagine living for a week in a little French apartment, buying fresh vegetables from the local market every morning, and taking day trips to neighboring villages at your own pace. Does this sound 2 to you? That’s the magic of slow travel. This is no “four-cities-in-seven-days” tour of Europe. Instead, you will truly slow down and experience new cultures.
Slow travel can mean taking a bike tour from one village to the next. It can mean driving along back roads instead of taking the highway. It can also mean covering long distances by train instead of by air so that you can enjoy the 3 along the way. No matter how you do it, the key is to slow down. You are to make the most of each moment of your vacation.
Slow travel has a few advantages. It allows you to form a stronger connection to your destination. You will stay in one place long enough to make friends with your neighbors and even pick your favorite coffeehouse. You will 4 take a break from your stressful life.
Slow travel is environmentally-friendlier than other types of travel. Airplanes cause lots of pollution. Trains, bikes and your own feet are better for the environment. Slow travel also helps 5 money. Staying in one place for a week reduces your transportation costs. 6 , you may cook your own food instead of eating out for every meal.
The next time you are going to take a trip, remember to try it the slow way.

Secondly, cats are easier and 5 to own. They don’t need daily walks and can entertain themselves. This makes them perfect for busy people or those living in small flats. They’re also tidier than dogs.
Finally, cats can be loving too. Research shows that many cats choose their owners over food, which means they can be just as loyal and kind as dogs.
6 , while dogs are great pets, cats have special advantages that make them even better.

Many cats like empty shoe boxes or packing boxes. When there are such boxes in the house, they often become the cat’s favourite places to be. This is the case with my cat, Molly. I bought her an expensive cat house, but she still prefers to stay in an old box. 1 is this? What’s so special about this box?
Time to go now. Molly is calling me to feed her. Meow!

AUDIOBOOK
“What should I read next?” asked my student Tom. His question surprised me. This child had no interest in reading. How could he have finished the book I downloaded for him just two days ago? “You’ve done already? How did you like it?” I asked, trying to 1 if he had read the book carefully.
“It was so sad. At the end, I couldn’t believe it when...” he continued, telling me parts of the story. 2 , he had read the book and loved it. “When did you find the time to read it?” I asked, still surprised. “Last night. It got interesting, so I listened to it all night. Three hours, I think,” he said.
“What do I read next?” Tom was actually not alone. Many children have never enjoyed reading. But now, they are 3 for the next book and for more time to listen. Yes, listen. These children are enjoying one audiobook after another. Some may argue that audiobooks do not count as reading. I used to think so, too. But a few years ago, my students changed my mind.
Sure, there are cognitive (认知的) differences between reading a story with our eyes and listening to it with our ears. But the skills we can develop by reading audiobooks are key to 4 reading success. And research shows that listening to audiobooks can also help children learn new words and 5 their comprehension and critical thinking (批判性思考) skills. Most importantly, audiobooks help them fall in love with books. In the end, I came to see audio books differently. They can make a huge difference for some of our students. So, why turn our backs on them? Tom has gone on to listen to All American Boys. He feels like a 6 now. And he is proud to share his feelings about the book with his friends.

Learning to think before you speak helps you to express yourself better. Besides improving your communication 1 , it stops you saying things you might come to regret.
Putting your foot in it
If you’ve ever shared an embarrassing story about yourself or someone else or said something unkind in the heat of the moment, you know how easy it is to say things you wish you could take back. Research shows this is more likely to happen during an argument because our brains release chemicals when we’re stressed or 2 that make it hard to manage our emotions. This can lead us to say and do things we regret.
Why does it 3 ?
Whether you’re talking face-to-face or sharing something online, it’s hard to take something back once you’ve said it. Pausing before you speak gives you the chance to choose your words carefully. It also helps you stay true to your values. Saying something unkind, 4 , can hurt someone else’s feelings and make you feel guilty or embarrassed later. An angry argument is like a game of tug of war (拔河). The harder you pull your end of the rope, the more the other person resists you. So thinking carefully before you speak gives you time to consider your words and the 5 they’ll have before saying them out loud.
Learn to think first
If you have something important to say, try to 6 your mood before speaking. When you are angry, you are more likely to say or send something hurtful, so experts recommend waiting until you feel calm. Before you say or do anything (while you are angry), take a breath and count to 10.

Everyone has to take risks sometimes, but many people think risks are negative, especially for teenagers. They 1 risk-taking with dangerous behavior, such as riding a motorbike too fast or looking at your phone while crossing the street. If this sounds like your parents, you might want to explain this to them. Taking risks can also be positive. Sometimes feeling scared or uncomfortable can help us 2 new things and learn how to make good decisions. If more people understood this, they might see why teenagers sometimes need to take risks.

Danger
If you take an interest in activities such as skiing or parkour, you might enjoy danger. If you adore extreme sports or theme park rides, it’s because risky situations produce a chemical in the brain called dopamine. Dopamine makes you feel happy and want to repeat an activity again to get the same feeling. That’s why you want to go back on a rollercoaster ride 4 it’s finished.

Has a person ever warmly held a door open for you? How do you feel after playing with friends? And what would you say is your favourite family memory? These questions have one thing in common: They’re all about connecting with people. “Let’s Connect” is the theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week. It 1 mental health by building healthy social connections.
Humans naturally connect with others, whether that’s family, friends or people in our community. Healthy connections give people energy and 2 . We all need people to celebrate and share our worries with. Social connections aren’t just about mental health; they improve physical health too, helping us to live a long life. Research suggests being 3 can slowly harm your health. Human’s need for connections is different from person to person, but what’s important is not how many relationships you have, but 4 your relationships are.
Then how to connect with others? “You can reach out and connect with people in so many different ways,” says Julia Clements, the organizer behind Children’s Mental Health Week. You can connect 5 or online, with your friends, parents, teachers or classmates. It’s not just people, either. “Some people feel connected with their pets or in nature,” says Clements. She advises making time to build more connections through actions as well as words. Being kind, listening to others and trying new experiences are all good tools.
Everybody may feel lonely sometimes and refuses to talk to others. Keep in mind that connections change—some become 6 , while others stop. “Remember that there are always people that care for you,” advises Clements. She says it’s important to tell someone you trust about how you are feeling, or safe organizations such as Childline or Shout. They can help, whether you’re looking to form new connections or repair a strained relationship that is important to you.

From the moment you wake up in the morning until you go to sleep, our lives are filled with noise. Whether it’s the radio at breakfast or chatting with friends at school, sounds surround us. Without quiet times—meaning no music or noise—our brains can 1 when they receive too much information at once. This can lead to increased anxiety and stress levels.
A regular habit
Many people have a habit of filling silence with noise. We might listen to our favorite music on the way to school or have the TV on while doing homework. However, by 2 these habits and introducing short periods of silence into our day, we can lower our stress levels.
Silence is a superpower
Silence offers lots of 3 . Scientific studies show that silence can help produce brain cells and improve mental health. The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “Silence is a source of great strength.” Learning to be comfortable with silence can feel like having a special power. It is highly valued in many cultures, helping to truly rest a busy mind.
Welcome the break
Embracing silence is important. Communication is a big part of being human, and we often want to fill quiet moments in 4 to avoid feeling awkward. However, learning to sit quietly can give us time to think about what we hear and process our thoughts more deeply.
Silence helps your brain
Just like our bodies, our brains need rest. Non-stop noise doesn’t let our brains relax fully. Quiet times give us the chance to think and daydream. 5 you find it hard to focus or be creative, getting rid of background noise can help you work better and give your brain space to solve problems.
You don’t need to spend hours in silence. Setting aside just five minutes a day for complete quiet can make a difference. Finding a peaceful corner or simply 6 can be a good start. Are you ready to give it a try?

You know that eating healthy, staying active, and working out a few brain games can help keep you sharp. But these lesser-known habits work wonders, too.
1. Sit tall
When we are sad or afraid, we are more likely to slouch (没精打采地站、坐或走). This position causes us to feel worried or 1 . It makes harder to think clearly and remember things. In a study of 125 university students, 56 percent found it easier to do maths problems when they sat up 2 than when they slumped down.
Sitting tall does improve memory because it helps blood and oxygen flow to the brain—by up to 40 percent.
2. Exercise—once
Having trouble remembering faces? In a small study, researchers showed pictures of faces to older people on two different days and after two different kinds of exercise. On one day, they rode bikes for 20 minutes and made sure they breathed heavily but were still able to talk. On the other day, they 3 sat on a self-pedaling bike for 20 minutes.
4 , people remembered the faces better after this single exercise.
3. Limit TV
As we all know, too much screen time can hurt a child’s cognitive (认知) development. But what about those old people?
It was a long-term study for those who were over 50, and they were healthy as well. It was found that people who watched more than three and a half hours of TV a day for six years experienced a greater 5 in memory test scores than those who watched less. Another study found that watching violent programming harms people’s memory as well.
4. Walk backwards
When trying to recall something, don’t just think “walk backwards”. In a series of 6 , people viewed a video of a movie, a word list or a set of pictures. Then they imagined walking forward or backwards, watched a video that moved forward or backward, or actually walked forwards or backwards. Some people also sat still.
Backward motion, whether real, imagined, or watched, is better than forward motion.
