A couple of days ago I unexpectedly lost my job. It wasn’t anything too important: I was just a carrier for the Scarborough Mirror, delivering newspapers every Wednesday and Friday. But it brought in a good amount of pocket money for a student like me.
During the first week of September I planned to stop my job, as I wanted to focus on my academics with school to start. I found a family on my street who were willing to take over and so I took their names anti numbers and turned them in to my district representative along with my resignation.
That was last week. This Tuesday came and I was supposed to get the newspapers to deliver on Wednesday. They didn’t come. I just assumed there probably wasn’t much to deliver so they would just give me everything tomorrow. It'd happened before so I wasn’t too worried. There was a seed of doubt, however, in my mind, that maybe the handover of this job was misunderstood. But I pushed that thought aside and just went on as usual.
Wednesday morning came and the papers weren’t lying on my driveway as they’d done for the past 9 months. My mom reminded me to call my district representative, who told me the route had indeed been turned over to the other family. She couldn’t have understood my message when I said I would work until September. So much for 2 more weeks of work!
In a way I’m glad because I don’t have to worry about delivering newspaper in the burning sun. On the other hand, I wasn’t ready to give up my job so early, so the unexpected loss was a tiny blow to me.
Despite these negative feelings, I’m looking forward to the next summer when I’m getting promoted and my wage will rise from what I had with the job, which gave me good experience about hard work and chances to meet my neighbors.
4. Why did the author plan to quit the job?
A. He could barely put up with its hardship. B. He hoped to shift his attention to studies.
C. He had earned enough to afford schooling. D. He desired to turn it over to a needy family.
5. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The family to replace me. B. Messages of my dismissal.
C. The papers to be delivered. D. The district representatives.
6. What do we know about the author?
A. He got fired on account of his own fault. B. He didn’t have his potential appreciated.
C. He didn’t submit his resignation as required. D. He had intended to stop the job in late September.
7. In which aspect did the author benefit from the summer job?
A. Learning to live with his personal imperfection. B. Establishing a closer tie with his community.
C. Facilitating his organizational skills. D. Breaking the habit of laziness.
C
Americans love their national parks. Last year, these lands attracted 331 million people. Visitors expect to be provided with roads, bridges, restrooms and more. The more people come, the more it costs to keep up the infrastructure (基础设施).
Unfortunately, the funds needed are not enough. The national parks have a backlog of more than $ 11 billion in things that need to be repaired or replaced. The Interior Department has proposed a solution: higher fees.
The increase would apply at 17 of the most popular parks, including Yellowstone and Acadia, during peak months. Currently, a seven-day pass costs $ 25 or $ 30 for a carload of parents and kids. Under this proposal, the fee would rise to $ 70 for each vehicle, with each motorcycle charged $ 50 and cyclists $ 30 per person.
That $ 70 may sound steep, but for a family of four spending a week inside, it works out to $ 2.50 per person per day. A one-day ticket at the gate for Great America, by comparison, costs $ 54.99 for children and $ 74.99 for adults. And let’s not even talk about Walt Disney World. For most people, the additional cost would be a tiny part of their total outlay. Studies show that entrance fees make up only 1.2 to 1.5 percent of visitors’ total trip expense.
The proposed change would yield $70 million, a 34 percent increase. And visitors may be happy to know that 80 percent of each fee they pay will go to the park they visited.
Nature provides Americans with the wonders of these parks for free. But making them accessible and enjoyable for millions of people costs money and the administration has a sound idea for how to get it.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. American national parks raised their entrance fees.
B. American national parks are cheaper to visit than others.
C. Americans love their national parks more than other people.
D. Entrance fees make up a small percent of visitors’ trip expense.
9 What does the underlined word “backlog” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Something strange. B. Something unfinished.
C. Something important. D. Something unnecessary.
10. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. The increase is so much.
B. Effect of the increase is obvious.
C. The increase is acceptable.
D. Opinions about the increase are different.
11. What are visitors happy to know?
A. They will receive more service.
B. They can stay longer in the parks.
C. The money they pay will be used on the park.
D. The money they pay will be used to help the homeless.

Karl walked to the back of the classroom to put his book away. There, lying on the carpet in front of the bookcase, was a golden ticket! He picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank.
The boys and girls in Karl’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their work or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week his teacher, Miss Evans, drew a ticket out of a jar, and let the winner choose a prize. Karl couldn’t believe his luck.
The golden ticket was going to be drawn, and here was another ticket, just for him. He looked around, but no one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize jar with the tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, at least one of his tickets would be picked! Then he could choose the pink pig as his sister’s birthday present, just like what he had been hoping for.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat.
He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. He did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Maybe whoever lost it was looking for it. But he needed this extra ticket for his great plan!
He remembered what Dad had told him and his sister. “When you make a right choice you can feel peaceful inside. You never have to feel bad about your choice later.”
Paragraph 1:
He put the pencil back in his pocket.

“Karl, I’d like you to have another ticket,” Miss Evans said.

The golden ticket was going to be drawn and here was another ticket, just for him.
“When you make a right choice, you can feel peaceful inside. You never have to feel bad about your choice later.”
Paragraph 1:
He put the pencil back in his pocket.

【答案】He put the pencil back in his pocket. And then he walked over to his teacher’s desk. “Miss Evans, I found this golden ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think somebody has lost it. I did find the ticket, but I haven’t earned it. And these are mine,” he said, dropping several tickets into the jar. When he turned around to leave, Miss Evans called him back.
“Karl, I’d like you to have another ticket,” Miss Evans said. “You are honest and returned this one. By the way, what prize would you choose if your ticket was drawn? The big candy bar or the fire truck? ” Karl said happily right away, “The pink pig! It’s my sister’s birthday next week, and I really want to give it to her. That’s her favorite animal.” Karl sat down at his desk and smiled. He still wanted his ticket to be picked, but he would be happy even if it wasn’t. Dad was right. Making the right choice did make him feel great, and he still might win the pink pig.
