Beach volleyball (沙滩排球) is one of those sports that can be an exciting game to play and watch. It’s really easy, and all you need is sand, a net and a group of people, of any age or fitness level, who want to have fun.
Beach volleyball can be played with as few as two people in each team, making a total of four people. However, if you are less skilled and experienced in the game, it will be easier to play with a larger team. The more players you have, the less ground each person will be responsible for covering and the more time they will have to recover between shots. If you only have a few players, each of you will get a lot of running for the ball after each volley (截球). If you are looking for a relaxing, fun, low-key experience, choose larger teams.
Beach volleyball is similar to regular volleyball in its rules. However, even experienced volleyball players do not realize how much more difficult it is to run and jump on sand. Since it is harder to move quickly on sand than a hard surface, play will be much slower than regular volleyball on a court. When an athlete trains for beach volleyball, he will focus on building lower body strength (力量) as well as upper body strength. Strengthening his legs is extremely important. This improves the player’s ability to move quickly and accurately on sand despite the resistance. The ability to jump high and land without injury is necessary for beach volleyball players.
Whether you are in it for the competition, or just to have a great time with your friends, beach volleyball can be extremely exciting and fun. You may start out with friends and may soon fall in love with the sport.
41. When playing beach volleyball, in which of the following situation will you feel most relaxed?

C. a person must have strong legs if he wants to run and jump quickly on sand
D. the rules of beach volleyball are the same as those of regular volleyball
43. Why is playing beach volleyball much slower than playing regular volleyball?
A. Because it is not easy to move on sand.
B. Because beach volleyball has a larger court.
C. Because the teams of beach volleyball are larger.
D. Because beach volleyball players are not experienced.
44. What does the author think of beach volleyball?

Dogs wag (摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a study has found.
Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behaviour of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time.
The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners — a positive experience — their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd, changed the direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.
46. The video cameras were used to catch the dogs’ responses because ________.
A. it was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging
B. the dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time
C. they enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit
D. the dogs wagged their tails in different directions when they were in different moods
47. The underlined word “intensity” in the passage means ________.
A. surprise B. worry C. hate D. excitement
48. When there are no stimuli, a dog will ________.
A wag to the right B. wag to the left
C. not wag at all D. wag to the left and then to the right
49. The underlined word “they” refers to ________.
A. the trainers B. the dogs C. the systems D. the researchers
50. The purpose of doing the experiment is ________.
A. to help people judge the mood of dogs B. to train dogs for their owners
C. to help dogs find company D. to help people choose their pet dogs

Walter was always sitting in the same chair when I came to visit. He would look up and smile when he saw me and pat the chair next to him for me to sit down. He loved to tell me about his lost golden years when he was an excellent baseball player. I was a good listener. After a couple of hours of talking, I would shake his hands and say goodbye to him. I hoped that I brought a little sunshine into Walter's life.
I met Walter when I was a high school student participating in a volunteer program with elderly people in a nursing home. It was the first of many such activities, ranging from playing with disabled children to sitting with cancer patients in a hospital. These activities seemed to satisfy my desire to be useful and to feel a meaningful connection to the lives of others.
My parents inculcated me with a belief that there was no greater human value than kindness, and encouraged me to make helping others and contributing to society important goals in life. Volunteer work provided a way of attempting to realize the truth of these messages.
I learned that volunteerism is not a one-way act of helping someone less fortunate. Involvement in the life of another person has enriched my life as well. Seeing how people deal with the challenges of their lives has taught me valuable lessons in courage and dignity. Many of the people whom I have met as a volunteer are an unforgettable part of my life. Perhaps I received far more than I ever gave.
This is why volunteerism works — each of us has so much need for human connection and so much to give to others.

B. lower body strength is more important than upper body strength
C. a person must have strong legs if he wants to run and jump quickly on sand
D. the rules of beach volleyball are the same as those of regular volleyball

A. wag to the right B. wag to the left
C. not wag at all D. wag to the left and then to the right
49. The underlined word “they” refers to ________.
A. the trainers B. the dogs C. the systems D. the researchers
50. The purpose of doing the experiment is ________.
A. to help people judge the mood of dogs B. to train dogs for their owners
C. to help dogs find company D. to help people choose their pet dogs
46. A 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. A
由第二段中的“Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behavior of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. (意大利的研究人员研究了30只狗的摇尾行为,用摄像机捕捉它们对一系列刺激的反应)”和最后一段中的“While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. (虽然没有视频的帮助,摇尾巴的变化不容易被注意到,但人们认为这些发现可以帮助人们判断狗的情绪)”可知,没有摄像机的帮助,人们很难发现狗的摇尾变化,所以在狗摇动尾巴时,摄像机更容易捕捉到狗的反应变化。故选A项。
由第三段中的“The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners—a positive experience—their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again.
由第三段中的“When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. (当狗没有受到任何刺激时,它们倾向于向左摇尾巴,这表明它们更喜欢有人陪伴)”可知,当没有刺激时,狗会向左摇尾巴。故选B。
【49题详解】
词义猜测题。根据最后一句“Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.(例如,计算机和视频系统可以被专业的训狗师用来确定他们需要接近的狗的情绪)”可知,他们指代的是前面的dog trainers,实验中训狗师要接近狗。故选A。

Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach. 故选A。

由第一段的句子“He loved to tell me about his lost golden years when he was an excellent baseball player. I was a good listener.” He listened to Walter talking about his lost golden years./ He acted as Walter’s listener.
由第二段的句子“I met Walter when I was a high school student participating in a volunteer program with elderly people in a nursing home. It was the first of many such activities,”(我在高中时认识沃尔特,当时我正在一家养老院参加一个老年人志愿者项目,这是许多此类活动中的第一次)可知,作者第一次做志愿者是拜访养老院的老人。 Visiting elderly/old people in a nursing home./ He visited elderly/old people in a nursing home./ A volunteer program with elderly people in a nursing home.
由第三段的句子“My parents inculcated me with a belief that there was no greater human value than kindness, and encouraged me to make helping others and contributing to society important goals in life.” Taught/Instructed/Educated.
The author learned that volunteerism is not a one-way act./The author learned that volunteerism is a two-way act./The author has benefited a lot from volunteerism/his volunteer work.

如在第3小题中,inculcate的意义要结合此单词的语境方可得出,由句子“My parents inculcated me with a belief that there was no greater human value than kindness, and encouraged me to make helping others and contributing to society important goals in life.” Taught/Instructed/Educated.

Dear Jim,
How’s everything going? Thank you for your letter. Now I’m writing to tell you how I make new friends in my new school. When I first meet my new friends, I smile and say hello to them. I believe a smile can help us make friends in a world of strangers. Also I try to help them when necessary.
There are many activities which can help us get to know each other quickly. At the beginning of the term we all took part in military training. And then we joined in the tug-of-war and other activities. As we study in the same class, we often deal with problems together.
