Mukbang, a South Korean word, means “eating broadcast(吃播)”. It is an online broadcast in which a person eats tons of food while talking with the people watching him or her. It began in South Korea in around 2010 and has spread all over the world.
Why did mukbang first appear in South Korea? Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic(评论家), thinks that it’s down to “the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans”. He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea where social eating is such a long tradition. However, eating alone is becoming increasingly common. It seems that mukbang gives people the feeling that they are part of something larger.
Alice Stride, a spokeswoman for the Campaign to End Loneliness, says, “It might bring someone great comfort to watch mukbang.” She adds that she would be worried if younger people were watching people eat instead of eating with friends or family, but for older people it could be a comfort. “If you can’t get out, if you’re ill for example, then perhaps that will bring you a great sense of comfort. When I was about 12, I had an “enemy”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time, I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you.”
“Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.” Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

Brad daydreamed throughout history class and missed an important lesson on the Grand Canal. At night, he found himself stuck when doing his homework on this ancient Chinese project. A moment later, he thought of his Sight Pro, the smart glasses, and put them on.
“Teach me about the Grand Canal.” Before he knew it, this simple instruction took the boy on a journey along the canal. He started in Hangzhou and was now slowly traveling up north toward Yangzhou.
He was taking in the fascinating views on the banks of the canal when Sight Pro suddenly said, “ ★ ”
“Are you giving me a quiz? Hmm, bring it on.”
A question appeared before his eyes: “What is the total length of the Grand Canal? Is it more than 1,000 kilometers or 2,000 kilometers?”
“I’ll go for 1,000 kilometers.” It took Brad two seconds to decide.
“Wrong answer. The Grand Canal is a system of more than 2,000 kilometers of man-made waterways. It’s the longest in the world.”
Then came the next question: “When did the building of the canal begin?”
“Was it in the 7th century?” Brad responded hesitantly.
“Wrong answer. It started in the 5th century B.C. E. (公元前). After that, different sections were built at different times. In the 7th century, Emperor Yang of Sui expanded (扩大) the canal to its present scale (规模) by linking the sections.”
“How amazing!” Brad continued his journey for a while.

“To make it easier for people to travel around the country.”
“Wrong answer. Its primary function was to transport food from the rich lands in the south to the capital city in the north. It was also used to transport goods.”
In the end, Brad scored zero on all the questions, but he was pleased that he had learned a lot.
“A big change happened to the Grand Canal during the Yuan Dynasty because the capital was moved to Beijing. Emperors needed new routes,” he wrote in response to one question. “This year is its tenth anniversary as a World Heritage Site (世界文化遗产),” he read out another answer as he wrote it down.

Oracle bone script (甲骨文) is the oldest kind of Chinese writing. AI is the newest technology we use today. But right now, in Anyang, Henan, a group of engineers is using AI to study this old writing type.
Li Bang, 33, is an AI scientist at Anyang Normal University. He and his team are building a special online library. They put pictures of oracle bones and lots of books into this library. They write programs to help AI learn to look at the shapes of characters (文字) and find information about them in the “library”.
When people want to study an oracle bone character, they show it to the computer. AI will find similar characters and books about it in a few seconds. In the past, this took people a few hours or even a few days.
AI is good at doing “puzzles (字谜)”. Usually oracle bones are found broken into pieces. To study them, we need to piece them together first. But there are about 160, 000 pieces in the world. It’s hard to find the correct pieces. So far (目前) we have only put together seven thousand sets. But AI makes this problem simple.
Engineers made a program to help AI learn to look at the shapes and characters of the bone pieces. It can quickly find matching pieces in its memory. This way AI can easily help us put the puzzles together.
“AI is a great helper for people who study oracle bones. But it can’t take their place.” Li said. AI remembers things very well but it isn’t good at thinking things through. So far it can help us look for information about the characters but it can hardly tell us what the characters mean.

Take a day to know your school.

Make friends.
Talk to different people. This is your school now. Take a chance on being who you weren’t at your old school. 68
Be yourself and be polite.
Don’t worry too much about what people think of you. Be true and respect everyone. It’s often the girl or the boy that you didn’t like at your new school that ends up being your friend after a little while. 69

【答案】
My Free Time
As a ninth-grader, my free time is a precious break from busy study—it helps me relax and recharge.
On weekdays, I usually take exercise with friends after school. This not only lets me let out stress but also helps keep healthy. On weekends, I often do some reading in the morning. In the afternoon, I help my parents with housework, like sweeping the floor or washing dishes. Sometimes, my family and I go for an outing to the nearby park, where we walk along the paths and breathe fresh air. We always have a good time on those warm afternoons.
My free time is both meaningful and enjoyable. It adds bright colors to my life beyond the study desk.

On the whole, though, we would advocate face-to-face communication. It’s something that won’t change.”
“I would always encourage people to do whatever makes them feel better as long as it is a healthy habit,” says Ben Edwards, a relationship expert(专家). I don’t think mukbang is a healthy way to have a meal. But I think if people feel like watching other people eat, and it gives them some kind of satisfaction, I see no harm.”

Then came the third question: “Why was the Grand Canal built?”
“Mega job, Brad!” Sight Pro’s sweet voice was heard again.

A. B.
C. D.
57.Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A.How do you like your journey?
B.How beautiful the Grand Canal is!
C.Fun time is over. Here comes the hard part.
D.Enjoy it, right? Now it’s time to take me off.
58.Based on which mind-map does Sight Pro raise questions?
A. B.
C. D.
59.Why was Brad pleased even if he scored zero?
A.Because he learned a lot while having a wonderful time.
B.Because there’s no need for him to finish his homework.

AI can also be a useful tool in 86 (educate), because it can explain complex topics to people 87 (simple).

Then came the third question: “Why was the Grand Canal built?”
“Mega job, Brad!” Sight Pro’s sweet voice was heard again.
