I saw a boy sitting alone near the window. I decided to sit next to him. “Hi, my name is Tom,” I said. He looked up and smiled. “I’m Mike,” he replied. We started talking about our summer vacations and our new school. Mike seemed very friendly. Soon, we discovered that we both loved playing basketball.
The teacher Ms. Li, came in and introduced herself. She gave us a warm welcome and then started the first lesson. It was an English lesson. She asked us to write a short paragraph about ourselves. I stood up and started reading nervously. When I finished, Ms. Li smiled and said, “Well done, Tom.”
At lunchtime, I sat with Mike in the dining hall. The food was better than I expected. We talked about our favorite subjects. Mike was into math, while history was my pick. We decided to help each other with our weak subjects.

In a world where tech companies often compete to create the next productivity tool, a new device is breaking away from the pack: Meet Friend, a new wearable AI companion that you wear around your neck. The small device records your every word and interaction and responds accordingly by text.
The device comes at a time when loneliness and social isolation are at record highs. Studies show that 61% of young people in the U. S. suffer from serious loneliness, a statistic that reveals a growing mental health crisis. While AI reshapes all the ways we interact in jobs, healthcare and entertainment —more and more people report feeling socially isolated, Schiffmann, Meet Friend’s founder, sees it differently: the device isn’t a replacement for human relationships but rather a way to fill the gaps when human companionship is hard to come by.
AI companionship is controversial. While some people argue that it can help people feel less isolated, others worry that AI relationships might displace real human connections, and thus make people feel more lonely. If you are someone who already struggles with human interactions, the thinking goes, why would you continue to subject yourself to them when you have an AI friend who’s fun and uncomplicated, and doesn’t come with all the baggage of another person?
But so far, the research doesn’t seem to support this fear. Drake, a researcher at Stanford University, surveyed more than 1,000 students who used the AI chatbot Replika, and investigated their feelings of loneliness. Roughly half of these users reported decreased anxiety, and a feeling of social support. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are more able to handle stress in their current relationship because of Replika’s advice.
It is still a new field, though, and Drake says there needs to be guidelines. “I strongly believe that you do need to have guidelines around AI companions pushing people back when appropriate, towards human relationships,” she says. These could be gentle reminders like “Hey, you should go chat with somebody about that.”
12. What is Meet Friend aimed at?
A. Replacing human relationships. B. Boosting the productivity at work.
C. Offering a new approach to connection. D. Detecting early symptoms of mental illness.
13. Why do some people oppose AI companionship according to paragraph 3?
A. They think it doesn’t offer fun and emotional support.
B. They claim it does serious harm to people’s mental health.
C. They worry it will make human interaction more complicated.
D. They fear it may lower people’s wish for real human interactions.
14. Which word can best describe Drake’s attitude towards AI companionship?
A. Cautious. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Disapproving.
15. What does the text mainly focus on?
A. The reliability of AI companions in daily life.
B. The possibility of AI changing human nature.
C. The potential of AI companions to ease loneliness.
D. The role of AI as a replacement for human connection.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. C

His wooden house was surrounded by beautiful greenery, and the fields of flowers that spread beyond the house were breathtaking. As they packed their bags for the trip, Sarah and David could hardly control their excitement. They talked about all the activities they could do with grandpa, like playing board games and taking long walks in the countryside.
Finally, the day arrived, and the family set out on their journey to grandpa’s house. The journey was a long and tiring one, but Sarah and David were too excited to feel tired. As they drew closer to their destination, they chatted even more excitedly about all the fun things they wanted to do with grandpa.
As they approached grandpa’s house, he came out to greet them with a huge smile on his face. Sarah and David were overjoyed to see him and hugged him tightly. It was great to be back in grandpa’s arms, and they felt the warmth and love from him.
However, shortly after they entered the house, they noticed that grandpa was not his usual self, looking pale and tired. Sarah and David felt a pang of sadness and worry in their hearts. Grandpa was not well, and they didn’t know how to make him feel better.
As they sat with grandpa, trying to make him feel comfortable, Sarah remembered that grandpa loved gardening. She suggested that they could create a garden for him, which would be a lovely surprise.
