阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A team of AI researchers at Microsoft, working with colleagues from the Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL),has used AI to develop a battery that uses less
lithium(锂).
Lithium batteries have become the industry standard for electronic devices and
electric vehicles and are expected to play a major role in the change to green power. But
lithium is expensive, which has led multiple teams across the globe to look for
alternatives. In this new effort, the research team looked for ways to reduce the amount
of lithium used in batteries.
This would normally take a long time because of the detailed approach required. To
reduce the workload and the time needed to process millions of alternatives, the
researchers turned to Al.Noting that AI applications are good at using massive amounts
of data to learn how to do things, the researchers designed one that could study millions
of materials that might be added to a lithium battery to replace some amount of the
lithium and test the results for factors such as stability and how a battery using a given
material would behave.
Using this approach, the research team reduced the list of possible alternatives to
just a few hundred possibilities. They then turned to materials scientists at PNNL for
advice on how to reduce the possibilities even further. The scientists suggested adding
more specific screening criteria and more testing rounds. After adopting that advice, the
team arrived at a promising alternative and an approach that involved replacing
approximately half of the lithium atoms in a battery with sodium (atoms.
After using the new approach to build a working battery, the researchers found it had
lower conductivity(导电性)than needed-一but they also believe that there is room for
improvement. They plan to continue working on the approach and the process they used
to find their solution, which they suggest could eventually solve other types of material
processing problems.
1.Why did the research team want to develop a battery that uses less lithium?
A.To reduce carbon emissions.
B.To meet the industry standard.
C.To decrease the cost of a battery.
D.To generate electricity efficiently.

With the development of artificial intelligence (Al),it does much for people. But can
you imagine the UK government is considering the use of AI in the justice system?
Supporters claim it can simplify legal tasks, cut down mistakes, and speed up cases.
They suggest AI should help analyze documents, forecast case results using past data,
and even assist in drafting legal papers, easing lawyers'workload.Youmna Hashem from
the Alan Turing Institute and her team have said that 84%of the UK's one billion yearly-
interactions between citizens and the government could be done by Al.
However,Vinija Jain and his team evaluated how AI judges ethically (
ambiguous actions, like stealing food due to hunger.Unlike humans, these AI systems
lack understanding and sympathy, often finding people guilty in such cases, which could
have negative effects on legal situations.
Jain remarks that a human judge can announce "This is wrong, but given the current
situation,it is forgivable."But it is not something we can realistically envision for an AI
judge.
To address these concerns, the government is exploring an approach that AI supports
rather than replacing human judgment. This would involve tight testing of AI systems
before they are applied to legal practices or in courtrooms.Additionally, there is a push
for being continuously monitored by legal experts to ensure that AI recommendations are
sound and ethically correspond with the principles of justice.
The debate over AI in the justice system is ongoing with both sides presenting heated
arguments. While the potential benefits of increasing efficiency and consistency are
undeniable, the importance of preserving the human element in legal decision-making still
cannot be ignored. As the UK government moves forward with its considerations,it will
be crucial to strike a balance that takes advantage of the strengths of aI while
safeguarding the fairness of the justice system.

The Impact of AI on Smart Homes
Artificial Intelligence (AI)is surely changing the way we live and work, and smart
homes are no exception. With AI,smart homes will become even more automated and
responsive.9
Personalized Experience
Smart homes can learn about the people living in it.With special sensors and AI,the
home can see which rooms people are in.Then the home can change things like the
temperature, lights and other things in that room to make people comfortable.10 For
example, when people enter a room, the lights will automatically turn on.
Energy Efficiency
Smart homes can save energy and help the environment. With Al,the home can
sense when people are not using things like lights. Then the lights will turn off by
themselves to conserve power.11 Smart thermostats()and window shades
work together to keep the home cool without using much air conditioning.
Security and Safety
AI has improved home safety a lot.It uses motion sensors and cameras around the
home to watch out for things automatically.Security systems with AI can tell if something
strange is happening. It will send alarms to owners on their phones.12 Smoke and gas
detectors use AI to detect dangers early, which makes homes much safer.

More than half of former host cities for the Winter Olympics will be too hot 14
(deal)with such games by the end of this century. That is the prediction of a recent
study.
It's not just the Olympics 15 are at risk now."The world of winter sports is changing
as the global climate continues warming, says Daniel Scott,16 climate-change researcher
in Canada. He led a team of researchers, who used math to predict 17 winter conditions will
have changed by February 2050 and 2080.February is the month 18 the Olympic winter
games are 19 (typical)played.
Scott and his team forecast temperatures and snow cover for the 19 cities that have
already hosted Winter Olympics,and two 20 (addition)cities:PyeongChang,South
Korea,and Beijing,China.
Scott's team 21 (start)with looking at historic winter conditions, and then used
computer models to predict conditions in the future.According to their model prediction,
by 2050,the average February temperatures in past Winter Olympic host cities 22
(rise)by 1.9 to 2.1 degrees Celsius.
These temperatures can affect the quality of snow, thus 23 (increase)the chance
of accidents.
