A My anxiety often directly blocks my ability to communicate.Something as simple as ordering food in a restaurant can become a burden when my body feels like it's against my mind.It began in primary school, and I have tried a number of techniques.Speech therapy()proved unhelpful, but I believe that my undergraduate training as a poet, with its emphasis on a logic of association rather than strict reality, also prepared me well for my therapy work. Poetry requires a kind of openness to the unknown.Composing poetry creates its own rhythm, helping writers avoid the conscious mind and use the poetic logic of the unconscious. One or the most troubling things is that it can be hard to know what will tip off the anxiety. My anxiety often grows out of the smallest social interactions and spirals until I'm left questioning my own existence. In these moments, poetry provides a way of making sense of the world. I have often used poetry as a coping mechanism for anxiety. When it's just me and the infinite (possibility of the blank page,I can turn that moment into an opportunity for greater self-understanding.An inability to speak becomes,in one of my poems,"A crowded mass of logs blocking the river of my throat." In writing poems,I feel that something occurs:Once they're on the page, they are out of my head.Rather than being consumed by my anxiety,I can evaluate it objectively. More than this, however,I feel that poetry allows me to hold hope and despair in the meantime. Although I was introduced to poetry outside of a therapeutic context,I believe that my experience demonstrates that poetry can be useful in a clinical setting, whose unique grammatical structure can allow patients to access parts of themselves that would be closed off by the conscious mind.Other forms of creativity such as drawing, painting and photography, may similarly help patients view their thoughts and emotions from new perspectives, and thus allow them to consider and process them differently. 高二学科素养周测评(十四)英语第1页(共4页) 真题 Mistakes are proof you're trying. It is my hope that this post will provide an opening to consider the role of poetry and 班级 creative expression more broadly,in the therapeutic process. 1.What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1? A.He was unable to speak after primary school. 姓名 B.He learnt the logic of association from poetry. C.He found it simple to order the food he wanted. 得分 D.He was recommended to learn poetry in college. 2.What does the underlined phrase "tip off"in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Reveal. B.Cause. C.Overcome. D.Lower. 3.What role does poetry play in the author's experience? A.It aids his understanding of himself. B.It improves his self-evaluation ability. C.It boosts his insight into literary works. D.It gives him more hope and less despair. 4.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To describe the author's journey as a poet. B.To highlight poetry as a tool to treat anxiety. C.To show how anxiety prevents communication. D.To share the author's views on speech therapy. 公 No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed",until it has been read aloud by someone,a teacher or a student.Better still, perhaps,is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it. All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,eventually, the most concrete“interpretation(解释)”of its suggesting tone, rhymes, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice,on records or on films,is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and the teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it. I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than“analyzing”it and“exchanging of views'”,if there isn't time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when we are reading a poem.Poetry is“a criticism of life'”,and“a heightening(提 升)of life”.Itis“a most appropriate approach to the truth of feeling”,and it“can transform your life".It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature( more central than it presently occupies. 密卷 高二学科素养周测评(十四)英语第2页(共4页) 1 I am not saying that every English teacher must try out poetry-teaching.Those who don't like it should not be forced to convey that negative feeling to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it. 5.What should we do to have a better understanding of a poem? A.Discuss it with others. B.Analyze it by oneself. C.Copy it down in a notebook. D.Practise reading it aloud. 6.Which is the purpose of teaching English according to the writer? A.To get students to understand life. B.To get students to enjoy poetry. C.To get students to become teachers. D.To get students to become poets. 7.What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply? A.More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry. B.Poetry is more important than any other literature genre. C.Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses. D.One cannot enjoy life fully without a good understanding of poetry. 8.What does the underlined phrase "make room"in the last paragraph mean? A.Build a booth. B.Provide equipment. C.Leave a certain amount of time. D.Set aside enough space. 第二部分语言运用(共两节;满分60分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳 选项。 Decades ago,I received a special assignment from the poet Robert L.Hass,my undergraduate literature professor. He instructed each student to 9 three poems from The Norton Anthology of American Literature and claimed,"You're going to be alone in the future, and 10 is going to be all you have. The task seems 11 because the act of memorizing a poem feels old-fashioned in an era when few of us encounter poetry at all.12,I began to change my view on a trip to Seattle.
